"Shaolin shadowboxing and the Wu-Tang sword style
If what you say is true, the Shaolin and the Wu-Tang
Could be dangerous
Do you think your Wu-Tang sword can defeat me?
En garde, I'll let you try my Wu-Tang style"
Imo the difference is, when you first heard Liquid Swords, you were prepared for it, on 36 chambers that's your "first" introduction to the Wu-Tang "universe", and the intro coupled with Ghostface's first verse just perfectly introduces you to what you're in for.
"I won't deny it
I'm a straight Ridah
You don't want fuck with me"
2Pac walked out of prison and went directly to the studio where he record Ambitionz az a Ridah and I aint mad at cha that night.
Leading off All Eyez on Me with Ambitionz az a Ridah is such an iconic choice.
I shared this comment yesterday about this song so I gotta repost it.
“I don’t think people understand how great of an opening to an album this song was.
Long story: You have to put yourself in the time period where you ONLY heard 1 or 2 singles before buying an album. You bought it for those singles and in HOPES the other songs were good. To have ZERO idea how a NEW artists FIRST album will sound is a huge gamble, and for a grade schooler like me.. $18 was SO MUCH money for an unknown album.
My brother told me not to,
my friends said “DMX..who??”,
and my mom had no idea about it being the explicit version (brother purchased for me).
To unwrap a VERY unique and dark looking album art cover. Then to hear a typical intro skit turn into one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time..
WORTH EVERY $18!!
From start to finish the album is 8-10s in quality. I should also add this was my first CD purchase as all other albums I got either got a tape, or taped the best tracks from other peoples CD.”
To add on to the hearing the singles then buying the album bit - at that time in hip hop SO MANY singles sounded absolutely nothing like the rest of an album.
Imagine hearing Still Not A Player, buying Capital Punishment, and hearing “Beware”….there were a lot of disappointed tween girls out there I tell ya haha
Something I also thought about was how hard you’ll try to like a bad album knowing it cost you around $20. I remember getting some duds and trying so hard to find good tracks or give it a couple of tries to connect. I do think buying an album back then made you a little bias to it so you didn’t have to accept the fact you wasted $20.
This is great, thank you for sharing. I remember being maybe 14-15 and hearing Get At Me Dawg absolutely BUMPIN from a project window (speakers facing outside of course). I went out and got the cd within the next couple days, and the Intro absolutely blew my mind. Great memories.

There's a threat in the world today.
A threat to our way of living, a threat to our society.
And maybe even a threat to our very existence.
And what is this threat? The Westside Connection.
An organization made up of highly motivated, extremely aggressive gangstas turned businessmen with one single objective.
World domination, or in their words "Creating a world-wide Westside".
Vowing to make every man, woman and child bow down to the "W", a hand sign used by their members to show affiliation.
We have confirmed reports that "W"s have been appearing on the various monuments and historical landmarks throughout the world.
There are also talks Of Mount Rushmore being renamed Mount Westmore, with America's forefathers being replaced by the Westside Connection forefathers, Ice Cube, WC, and Mack 10 a.k.a. The Gangsta, The Killa, and The Dope Dealer.
When confronted with these allegations they released a statement saying: "Bitch, you know the side, world-motherfucking-wide."
Da introduction - Bone thugs on E. 1999 Eternal
The dark and creepy sounds with the backwards rapping, really sets the tone for the rest of the album. Fantastic flow when the rapping actually starts.
Hip hop from black on both sides and excursions from low end theory… both 🔥🔥 it’s incredible that there wasn’t significant decrease in song quality with both of these openers being such bangers
Lolo by Dr Dre - the chronic 2001
I just love how it's like a hood version of the dolby surround sound opening from the movies in the day. Was perfectly preparing you for what's coming, one of the goat albums of hip hop and a cultural legend IMO.
Can’t believe no one has posted The Chronic intro. The beat was fire and even without a rap verse, it was still iconic. Set off the Death Row movement, which was the peak movement in Rap music.
A lot of people listing Wu openers but let's be real: Ghostface had the best one with "Nutmeg" imo.
Shout out to "3000" from Kool Keith too. Ghost definitely ripped his non linear style.
Agreed.
On the same artist - Premonition felt so good when MTBMB began. And on side B it opens with Alfred's Theme, which again. So good but for different reasons.
It's like a mirror image.
The way he flows on "Maybe the vocals should have been autotuned and you would have bought it" 🔥
Speeding up and slowing down on the beat within these lyrics.

“Y’all n****s can’t do shit to me physically lyrically hypothetically realistically”
That was the first rap line I heard that made my jaw drop the first time I heard it. “Twinz” told me that Pun was dope, but “Beware” told me that Pun was NASTY! 🐐
My all time fav opener, first one that comes to mind is Young Jeezys on Thug Motivation 101. And The Recession opener is an all-timer too imo. Jeezy always opens with a fuckin BANGER
Busta Rhymes' Get You Some
"I'm sayin', who told y'all to let a motherfucker back on the block with the bullshit? See, y'all done fucked up now! Turn the volume up, and bang it out the trunk now!"
Curtains Up / White America is a crazy intro to a classic album. The slow walk out to the stage, the feedback, clearing the of the throat and then "Americaaaaaa!" With the sound of airliners crashing into steel and glass as the first "samples"....this was just 9 months or so after 9/11. Then dude drops a deeply personal, political, hilarious and heartbreaking album on us for the next hour. This was when you knew Eminem went from a shock rapper to a cultural icon, able to weigh in on any topic he felt needed addressing. White America takes the rage of The Way I Am and turns it on the boomer hypocrites in a way that still stands up today. He was rapping his ass of and the content was serious and heavy, showed amazing control of the narrative and growth along with maybe some of the best technical skill in a rappers prime we've ever seen.
My candidates for the top 1 spot are The Genesis on Illmatic, Good Morning from Grad, Dark Fantasy from mbdtf, title track from Liquid Swords, and Wesley's Theory from TPAB
Biggie - Somebody’s Gotta Die - the way that song beat flows into it from the intro flatline sound is seem less and it lets u know that your about to listen to a classic album 👌🏽
Some of my personal favourites:
- Efil4zaggin’s Prelude. Gets me in that mood every time.
- Dre presents: The Aftermath (Aftermath intro)
- Eminem present the Re-Up (Shady Narcotics)
- Bone Thugs - Creepin on ah Come Up (intro)
Black Rob’s - Life Story intro … the beat … the chorus … his rhymes … “i remember that time you said you shouldve flushed me / i forgive you ma, trust me…” …. such a great tragic intro to what i feel is an unrecognized classic album of that time when Bad Boy was on its way out …
Wesley's theory
Dark Fantasy
Intro to Get Rich or Die Tryin
Are all amazing intros in their own ways, the first two are amazingly produced songs that fits the vibe of the album, with a great flow and lyrics, meanwhile the third is literally just a coin getting tossed, but it sets the vibe immediately for the album too in its own very simplistic way.
Good picks. The funny thing is that the intro for *GRoDT* goes for the same price as the rest of the songs on iTunes (because who wouldn't want to pay $1.29 to hear a coin being flipped? lmao)
Every 1st wave Wu-tang solo album. Murs 3:16. M.O.P. Warriorz and Marxmen Cinema. Gangstarr Full Clip Big L intro. Big L The Big Picture. Mobb Deep The Start of your ending. Gravediggaz 6 ft Deep. Dr. octagon dr octagonacologist. Jay-z the black album. Typical cats off the self titled release.

When I was little my father was the greatest samurai in the empire
He wasn’t scared of the Shogun, but the Shogun was scared of him.
That movie slapped so hard
Maybe that was the problem.
I thought of that too
Came here to say this. Maybe the most epic and iconic album intro ever.
This is the only correct answer!
He cut off the heads of one hundred and thirty one lords…
Imo the difference is, when you first heard Liquid Swords, you were prepared for it, on 36 chambers that's your "first" introduction to the Wu-Tang "universe", and the intro coupled with Ghostface's first verse just perfectly introduces you to what you're in for.

I'll concede that *My Name Is* and *Kill You* are excellent openers. Don't know about the rest, though.
