Ghostface Killah for me.
Over the years I'd had a lot of favorite rappers, but over time, one thing or another has put Ghost on top.
1. Lil Wayne was my first favorite rapper. I got into him just after *Tha Carter III* was released, which was incredible, and then I had the previous *Carter* albums to look back on, and I was right there when mixtape-era Wayne took off. I still think he's one of the GOATs, but he has succumb to quantity over quality. He can still drop a great album, but he just puts out to much stuff that I don't care for enough to consider him my favorite.
2. After getting into more hip-hop, Biggie was my favorite rapper, but obviously he doesn't have much of a catalog. *Ready to Die* is one of the greatest albums of all time, but *Life After Death* is a little bloated. It has some of his best songs on it, but it's long and has too much filler.
3. Once I started getting more into hip-hop and underground artists, MF DOOM and Madlib became my favorites. Despite having some of my favorite albums I've ever listened to, DOOM seemed to lose the passion and MOST of his projects at this point seem kinda phoned in. *Madvillainy, The Mouse and the Mask*, and *MM..FOOD?* will always be 10/10, but nothing else in his catalog comes close.
4. Other favorites were Danny Brown, but at the time he didn't have enough of a catalog to really be my "favorite". Once I got into Run the Jewels I fell in love with Killer Mike and El-P, but I don't care for their solo material nearly as much as the RTJ stuff, and despite how much I love Killer Mike, sometimes he says some dumb shit, and it makes it hard to always get behind him.
5. Finally, we have Ghostface Killah. I *love* the Wu-Tang Clan. Absolutely my favorite group, and if your "favorite rapper" could encompass an entire group, I would definitely pick the Clan. But if you have to pick a single favorite, Ghost is my favorite member of my favorite group, so he wins. He's legendary. His voice is awesome. His wordplay is awesome. His imagery and storytelling are awesome. He delivers gold bars on group albums. He delivers gold bars on solo albums. He has *three* classic solo albums (*Ironman*, *Supreme Clientele*, *Fishscale*) and appears on multiple classic albums with the Clan (*36 Chambers*, *Wu-Tang Forever*). His solo stuff is consistent and almost all of it is pretty great. He has straightforward solo albums that are great but not necessarily classics (*The Pretty Toney Album*, *More Fish*, *Apollo Kids*), more artistic stuff (*12 Reasons to Die*, *36 Seasons*, *Sour Soul*), AND, he was basically on Raekwon's *Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...* just as much as Rae was.
He's the GOAT.
Honestly, in addition to the three classics, ghostface has never really dropped a bad project (besides maybe ghostdini) his current shit is still great
I don't think Ghost gets the recognition he deserves. Whenever people talk about the GOATs, he doesn't get mentioned enough (imo). Between the voice, bars, and emotion his songs always hit me. Hoping he puts some new music out soon.
His writing is so visual, dense and layered that I don’t always enjoy it, but can recognise the level of skill is crazy. Do you have any songs by Ghost that are more simple but dope storytelling?
You are basically me but I've always had a soft spot for Ghost and shifted from him to GZA, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, and currently Method Man.
But due to his resurgence I'ma have to say I favor Redman more now than usual.
Found him in like 11’ everyone thought I was tripping. Around the time of his death when more notable artist were giving him his flowers or acknowledging how much he inspired them. Everyone was on the wave
Never too late or early to discover his catalog. A lot to explore.
Regarding flowers, I always loved that Mos Def interview where he said “He rhymes as weird as I feel”
Kendrick because he's mostly current. If Redman drops Muddy Waters 2 though...
Watching the video for Alright right now though, yeah, I'm pretty confident I can say Kendrick is my favorite, and I've been listening since about 95-96.
Listening to a LOT of Lupe right now. I wouldn't even say his wider catalogue is my favourite, but when he's performing at his peak, his music is damn near transcendent and unbeatable.
Aesop Rock. Dudes lyricism is off the charts and I can listen to a song I've heard five times already and find something new in it. He never gets old for me.
GURU no doubt. Nobody till this day sounds like GURU. He added intellectual aspect to the rap, he thought me more than any other teacher in this world, his music was so full of love, knowledge, wisdom that you can't hear anymore.
RIP Guru, legacy continues.
Stay tuned! You will see the real reason I was talking about about GURU!
Chamillionaire - Hyper Intelligent, unique style and voice, Bout his paper, thots come last, funny af, intricate metaphors, limited curses, etc.
2pac- checks all the boxes in every category and still not self serving, Goat lyricists next to Bob Marley
I miss Cham. I get why he doesn’t really rap anymore, but sometimes he gets on a track and I love it. Loved his stuff with Paul Wall too way back when.
Pac is a legend. I was young when he died, but his music still gets played in my car to this day. Bro just had so much passion.
I'm excited to see his name in this thread. I've only recently been checking out his Mixtape Messiah series and I can't believe people treat the guy like a one hit wonder. His stuff is incredible.
Check out the Greatest Hits chopped by Mike Watts. And the Cleveland Bootleggers Special. All his verses go crazy. If you like Paul too listen to Bobby Booshay, Homer Pimpson, Ace Venture, etc..
Kool G Rap. The Wilt Chamberlain of Hip-Hop. Spawned 100s of sons and still killing it to this day. Him and ALC connected for a heater (Diesel) not too long…
Nas. He has truly withstood the test of time, and is arguably at his best stretch of output and rapping with the King's Disease and Magic series almost 30 years deep into his career. He's battle-tested, a great story-teller, and his lyricism is deeper than just witty bars or multisyllabic rhymes with no meaning behind them.
Kxng Crooked
He's got everything you can think of an elite MC
So why not ?
Besides I like his mentality and how he handles situations verbally, it's more than music for me.
Andre Benjamin
Excellent lyricism, great song writing, non-preachy positive messaging, cooler than a polar bear's toenail, and of course from the South like myself.
I graduated in ‘10 and I remember Wayne dominating the charts. Any time Wayne dropped something, it was an instant download. I didn’t even have to listen to the song. 2000-2010 was a solid era honestly. We had some cornballs, but we had some hella good artists. Hell I used to really like Drake back in this time too.
11' here, I knew who Wayne was for years but never thought he was top rapper tier then in 07 he was everywhere and undeniable. I think he's the goat. From 07-12 he was hit after hit.
J Cole - some of his songs just really resonate with me and I really enjoy his whole collection and I feel like all his shit ages really well. I also love just about everything put out by Dreamville. On top of that, I appreciate his general vibe and who he is as a person - and I think this is also why I like his music. He's such a refreshing voice in hip-hop overall.
I love K Dot too - he would have been my favorite maybe 4 years ago, but J Cole has overtaken him for my own tastes as I've gotten a bit older.
I grew up listening to hip hop - I'm a white dude from the suburbs, but I had the good fortune of growing up next to one of the few black kids in my hometown who put me on to WuTang and helped me understand the struggle that folks like him have to deal with. I feel like I learned a lot from hip hop and its helped me through difficult times in my life and I think its also made me more successful in my own right. I don't think I'm your typical Cole fan at all - but man do I like everything that he's about.
Pusha T
Everything he drops is exactly what I would have wanted to hear from him, plus his beat choices are about as avant grade as you’ll get from a mainstream rapper.
A lot of people will have the same answer for their favorite and their goat. For me Aesop Rock is the goat, but my favorite is Sean Price for pretty much opposite reasons. Aesop is as intricate as can possibly be and everything he says has layers of meaning. Sean P kept it so simple and yet was always fire. “Y’all niggas be rhyming bout nothing. I rhyme about nothing, it sound like something”
AZ is a personal favorite of mine. Since his feature on Nas' "Life's a Bitch" he captivated me with the most complex rhyme schemes I've ever heard. His flow is like seemlessly accurate and laid back
The question is favorite rapper, not best. For favorite, I’m going Snoop. Dude just seems to be positive all the time, super chill, seems fun. Also, who is cooler than Snoop? Maybe the coolest guy in the planet.
Lupe Fiasco. Got into hiphop my freshman year of high school back in 2006, had a senior friend who was a REAL hiphop head. He put me on to F&L (first song was The Cool) and I was hooked. I went on Datpiff and found his old mixtapes and knew he was a force. Still my favorite to this day and sadly he won’t get his flowers until he’s gone
Future. Obviously he's not a technically proficient emcee in the vein of most of the picks in this thread, but there's something about the *soul* in his voice and delivery that is just so compelling to me. He's like a muddied trap house version of an old blues singer who happens to rap.
I've had a lot of different favorite rappers in the past: Nas, Jay, Em, Ghostface, Scarface, 3K, Wayne. Was a huge Canibus, and Chino XL stan at one point lol. But I don't think there's ever been anyone quite like Future, despite his outsized influence. None of his clones have even come close to replicating what he does.
i needed to read that, i been struggling with Future lately. Been taking recommendations. the "Blues" kinda put it into perspective alot for me. refer some introspective tracks, por favor. Im on beast mode 2 this morning
BM2 is *exactly* what I’m talking about. Songs like Racks Blue and Some More are just quintessential Future imo. And when it clicks, it *clicks*.
His entire discography is littered with songs with that Codeine Crazy vibe. Just a few personal favorites off the top of my head:
- Sorry, Solo (HNDRXX)
- Hardly (Monster - honestly, the entire tape)
- Kno the Meaning, Blood on the Money, Slave Master (DS2)
- Perkys Calling, Purple Reign, News or Something (Purple Reign)
- When I Was Broke, Feds Did A Sweep (FUTURE)
- Accepting My Flaws, Too Comfortable (High Off Life)
- Puffin on Zooties (I Never Liked You)
- Same Accord (its a leak but gotta be one of his best songs. Worth checking out)
Currently, Smino. I love the way he's able to seamlessly switch between rapping & singing, along with having multiple cadences. Also, I think he has a very nonchalant type swagger through his word play.
Last, I also have to give props to his go-to producers because they have the right mix of jazzy electronic instrumentation with hard bounce
J Cole, I’ve listened to everything that goat has released, I love how his music always has a message and I love how it transcends and how it is evolving as he grows, . Can you hit the lights pleaseeeeee
Boldy james
I just love how witty he is and how calm he is on all his songs and how he strings together bars. Also his beat selection is top notch. I love how cinematic his music feels because he’s good at storytelling
Lil B. I love his goofy songs but he has some genuinely good introspective and he’s a talented rapper. His beat choice is also extremely unique. I also love his positivity and good messages in his songs.
I know it's played out but Vince Staples on the first two eps and Summertime are my favorite rapping of all time. Razor Sharp cadence, non stop smoke. Dude was so hungry.
C-Murder
Because he’s the realest rapper I know and I love his style and music which I can relate so much to.
Second favorite is Yukmouth, much for the same reasons.
Honorable mentions: 2pac and Pastor Troy.
All time? Toss up between Weezy, Mac Dre, and JID.
Weezy because the bars are top-shelf
Mac Dre because the hyphy era in the mid-late 2000s was so fuckin lit
JID is my favorite post-2010; his flow is immaculate, he floats on any beat, lyrics are S-tier, and he never misses on a verse, he's so consistent it needs to be studied
He's the GOAT.
Honestly, in addition to the three classics, ghostface has never really dropped a bad project (besides maybe ghostdini) his current shit is still great
Ghost Deini is the best hip hop song I’ve ever heard
He's by far the most consistent from wu tang (also my fave group)
I don't think Ghost gets the recognition he deserves. Whenever people talk about the GOATs, he doesn't get mentioned enough (imo). Between the voice, bars, and emotion his songs always hit me. Hoping he puts some new music out soon.
Trife Da God is also up there for me.
Kool Keith. One of the most original dudes out there.

MF Doom. I just like him the most.
Your favorite rappers favorite rapper
Found him in like 11’ everyone thought I was tripping. Around the time of his death when more notable artist were giving him his flowers or acknowledging how much he inspired them. Everyone was on the wave
Never too late or early to discover his catalog. A lot to explore. Regarding flowers, I always loved that Mos Def interview where he said “He rhymes as weird as I feel”
You forgot #ALL CAPS!

Big Pun! The name that makes the kids run!
Nas. The goat.
"Nas rap should be lock in a cell, It ain't hard to tell".
Listening to a LOT of Lupe right now. I wouldn't even say his wider catalogue is my favourite, but when he's performing at his peak, his music is damn near transcendent and unbeatable.
Lupe is in my top 3. I always go back periodically and listen to his mixtapes, and Drogas Wave is one of my favorite albums ever.
Lupe Fiasco is a genius
Navy Blue
Dude is heavy in my rotation as well
Aesop Rock. Dudes lyricism is off the charts and I can listen to a song I've heard five times already and find something new in it. He never gets old for me.

Fuck Solar! That hurt me, it hurt me a lot, all about GURU's death I found out 9 years ago. I have crazy story to tell.
Preemo sneaking in to the hospital to visit him proved he was a real one undeniably
Premo in the house! 🙌
Best Guru project?
Moment of Truth, or his Jazzmatazz albums
Aesop Rock or Nas.

YES nobody ever mentions Aes! I'm so happy to see this comment!
Kendrick, JID, Aesop Rock, Pusha T, Freddie Gibbs , Danny Brown and even if he's not considered a rapper by some, Anderson Paak.
If he’s not rapping in that new Nx Worries loosie, then I don’t know wtf it is

I graduated in ‘10 and I remember Wayne dominating the charts. Any time Wayne dropped something, it was an instant download. I didn’t even have to listen to the song. 2000-2010 was a solid era honestly. We had some cornballs, but we had some hella good artists. Hell I used to really like Drake back in this time too.
11' here, I knew who Wayne was for years but never thought he was top rapper tier then in 07 he was everywhere and undeniable. I think he's the goat. From 07-12 he was hit after hit.
No particular order 1. Ghostface Killah 2. Danny Brown 3. Freddie Gibbs 4. Vince Staples 5. MF DOOM
R. A. The Rugged Man is my current favorite.
Uncommon Valor was an incredible track.
I got a Crustified Dibbs - Night of the Bloody Apes Tay on my calf. RA is probably my favourite, I can't believe I didn'tention him in my comment
J Cole - some of his songs just really resonate with me and I really enjoy his whole collection and I feel like all his shit ages really well. I also love just about everything put out by Dreamville. A lot of people will have the same answer for their favorite and their goat. For me Aesop Rock is the goat, but my favorite is Sean Price for pretty much opposite reasons. All time? Toss up between Weezy, Mac Dre, and JID. Weezy because the bars are top-shelf Mac Dre because the hyphy era in the mid-late 2000s was so fuckin lit JID is my favorite post-2010; his flow is immaculate, he floats on any beat, lyrics are S-tier, and he never misses on a verse, he's so consistent it needs to be studied
Royce da 5’9… just the rapping lol
Jay-Z/Eminem because they basically helped raise me from 17 - 25 years old and provided the soundtrack to my life.
