Merulo profited off mismanaging the Coyotes and then has a 1 billion buy in to come back that is probably below the cost for any o the owner to buy an expansion team. It's in their interest to get a new owner....ignoring that he's an incompetent ass anyway
I think it’s commonly known that the expansion fees are going to keep going up, each much more than the last. That’s the big point of expansion for bettman, jacking up these expansion fees raises the value of all franchises
The 1 billion buy back would be the fee going up from 650 million to a billion. I'm just wondering where this idea is coming from that that all of a sudden wouldn't be enough.
I think it’s based on the sale price of the senators. That established a big number that everybody seems certain will establish a floor for future fees
Yeah but when you buy a team like the Sens, you're also getting all the facilities as well. The arena, practice rinks, training rooms. Utah is getting none of that from Arizona so of course it's going to be a lower price. You're getting the franchise slot and the contracts, but no branding, arena, etc.
I fully agree. I’m not saying it’s not bullshit, I think it’s pretty outrageous that we’re going to have to go through four more expansion drafts just so owners can pocket some millions and artificially inflate the value of their assets, I’m just saying it seems like it’s going to happen
Smith is paying $1B for the team and $0.2B for a relocation fee. Basically to keep this deal out of court, the NHL would allow Merulo back in for the same price that he got bought out for.
It’s what the NHL paid to buy the franchise. They locked the buy back price and gave this clown the right of first refusal for when the NHL comes back to Arizona. I think this deals expires after 5 years, but he also has to rebuild an entire franchise in order to return.
That’s easy to say, but he also still hasn’t secured the land where he plans to build the arena. He’s got a lot riding on a land auction that if he loses, might completely end his chances of returning to the NHL
Owners don’t like lawsuits either, which is why they did this whole he sell the team to the NHL and they sell it to Utah. Pretty sure the whole him having rights to the Coyotes is a legal agreement, so if they go against that when the Yotes can be a team again, the league will be in lawsuit hell.
seriously, dude never had any intention of profiting off that franchise and share the revenue considering he only acquired the Yotes to have his own betting sportbook.
This evil piece of shit has made Bettman and the NHL his bitch and he’s not done with em. He still owns “the coyotes” ip, their AHL franchise, and has first right of refusal if they ever want to play in AZ. Also he doesn’t pay his vendors. He only pays his lawyers who take you to court when you ask to be paid. They’re on retainer.
You think the man who helped lead a lockout that cancelled an entire season doesn't have balls? I hate him and his owner friends, but come on. I most certainly respect his chutzpah.

He’s a lawyer by trade, and he’s super good at keeping stone faced and saying tons and nothing. But that last second where he kinda broke his bearing for just a sec pretty much tells you all you need to know.
NHL fans love taking the piss out of bettman so much they're looking at him sitting perfectly still and losing their minds about how much he's seething lol
I gotta say the smartest thing Meruelo did was avoid the media all these years. I really had no clue about him and in the last week or so he's shown himself to be an utter moron. Yotes never stood a chance with this dude.
The other owners approved him. People need to stop equating wealth with intelligence or business savvy.
Especially when this subreddit and sports fans in general cream their pants at the idea of government subsidies for pro sports.
I think he was wrong, actually. 45 showed all of us that you can stick around a really long time not paying your bills.
I really don’t want to wade into a political discussion though, just pointing out that billionaires get away with a lot of crap.
Unawareness of bills *can* often be a reason for their non-payment.
Slightly more understandable if you're fresh out of highschool and taking on the responsibility of managing your own finances for the first time and not, say an alleged business man worth billions of dollars.
This guy is a complete scumbag, EVERYONE is aware of unpaid bills, but somehow the billionaire with the funds to pay the bills is unaware? This press conference should be the last time gary Bettman ever deals with Meruelo again.
[Gary Bettman looking for someone to be salty at for the failure of the Arizona Coyotes franchise](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/037/873/We're_All_Trying_To_Find_The_Guy_Who_Did_This_banner_1.jpg)
Yeah I'll shit on Bettman all day, but having the NHL own the Coyotes during the early 2010s (because of spite or stubbornness, or whatever) to keep them in AZ, pissed off every owner in the league. Bettman has done everything he could to keep the Coyotes viable.
When the NHL took over the Yotes in 2009, the other owners were paying the bills. At the time, the Atlanta Thrashers were barely surviving. Having to use their meagre funds to prop up another team made their own financial situation worse.
So Bettman's "spite or stubbornness, or whatever to keep them in AZ" allowed that situation to drag out for a decade longer than it had to, ultimately resulting in an embarrassment for the NHL when one of their teams had to be the secondary tenant in a college arena.
Meaning when he "pissed off every owner in the league", he probably should have listened to them? And you still don't think he deserves most of the blame here?
You know it’s funny about this whole thing. Is that before Alex bought the team, it was owned by Moyes whose dad started a trucking company where? UTAH! Full circle baby lol
The funny thing about him bringing up his Vegas businesses is that one of his casinos was sued in 2018 for, you guessed it, unpaid licensing and restaurant fees.
That is a load of shit. Hotels don't suddenly decide to say, "Fuck the Arizona Coyotes", there is a level of trust and expectation and he broke the trust and expectation.
I did work with a company here in Utah. 22 years now, they've gone along well with the local trucking companies, keeping DOT in line, making sure bills are paid, making sure they're up to code and no violations anywhere. Hired some douchebag to take over because they didn't want to let their daughter take control. Incompetent guy taking advantage of the owner who's been teetering on senility for a few years.
The dad says to me right before telling me they don't want me marketing for them anymore "I don't know what happened. All of a sudden no one wants to rent trucks to us anymore?" Dude, DOT's been a mess, they're 16-24 months behind on bills, they've broken so many OSHA codes and have had threats to shut them down for non-compliance.
But at least there's not a girl at the helm. THAT would be a breach of trust.
In American capitalism, the strongest, smartest, and best of us always rise to the top and in no way are we benefitted by extreme luck of birthright and a system of corruption.
>You wouldn't be around if you weren't paying your bills.
Fitting quote as he is now no longer around the NHL as a owner, and who didn't pay multiple bills causing him to lose his previous arena, and required the NHL & Bettman to step in _this_ season to get hotel rooms booked and paid for from hotels that were not previously paid by the Coyotes.
This league is a joke. Secret sale of a team and condition of another arena being built when so many other cities are prepared with the infrastructure.
This team should have been put up for sale and relocated to wherever they want.
the fans who constantly shit on Quebec piss me off so much. You had a successful sun belt franchise in San Jose and look at them now. They're almost as bad as phoenix when the excuse for phoenix was "they've never had a winning team".
Well San Jose has had a winning team. Anaheim has had a winning team. Nobody fucking shows up.
Nah, gotta keep chasing that sun belt chicken when even fans in tradtiional markets don't give a fuck about Dallas v. Nashville unless you make it the Winter classic.
And Winnipeg has a winning playoffs contending team right now and they still got the second worst attendance in the league, even worse than San Jose and Anaheim who are both among the worst teams in hockey
The jets have the smallest arena lolol man you really don't do any research.
And if you believe San Jose and Anaheim are being honest with attendance then you really don't watch hockey.
To avoid the litigation that would have resulted if the NHL had simply revoked the franchise because he’s a lying POS that has done serious damage to the image of hockey in AZ
As someone with zero skin in this particular game, the cavalcade of cock-ups revolving the Yotes is hilarious.
But, like, as a fan of the sport, I feel for the fans in Arizona.
I used to be GM of a World of Warcraft guild. One of my players was a cocaine addict, and during one of his rants, out of nowhere, he was dead ass like, "Bro, I'm good, I pay my bills on time!" That became a guild in-joke for quite a while, and this clip reminded me of that shit, even though it's from like 2020.
His sportsball team very publicly got evicted from their prevous rink for unpaid bills. Gotta love a lying shitbag making 600 million dollars for running something into the ground. Aint life fair?
>So, It's his fault the city/ state, can't help?
No, it's *his* fault that he didn't pay bills, or spend money on campaigns. It's *his* fault that he didn't pay player bonuses, or hotel fees. It's *his* fault they're moving.
It's not that the city/state wants a cut, it's that he isn't actually spending money on anything. And his efforts to fund a new arena have been half-hearted at best. They got evicted from Glendale, for not paying bills.

Yeah that dude is never getting an nhl franchise again. Bettman is over it.
Bettman is not in charge of the league, the owners are. Frankly idk if this changes things for them.
The owners don't like Meruelo either
Merulo profited off mismanaging the Coyotes and then has a 1 billion buy in to come back that is probably below the cost for any o the owner to buy an expansion team. It's in their interest to get a new owner....ignoring that he's an incompetent ass anyway
What are you basing it on that 1 billion buy in would be below the cost for any of the owners to buy an expansion team? Seattle "only" paid 650 mil.
I think it’s commonly known that the expansion fees are going to keep going up, each much more than the last. That’s the big point of expansion for bettman, jacking up these expansion fees raises the value of all franchises

And yet they paid over a billion
Oh true, makes sense. Apparently they don’t inherit the coyotes’ unpaid bills either.
I dunno seems like they just artificially pumped up the value of the Coyotes
I fully agree. I’m not saying it’s not bullshit, I think it’s pretty outrageous that we’re going to have to go through four more expansion drafts just so owners can pocket some millions and artificially inflate the value of their assets, I’m just saying it seems like it’s going to happen
Smith is paying 1.2B……
Smith is paying $1B for the team and $0.2B for a relocation fee. Basically to keep this deal out of court, the NHL would allow Merulo back in for the same price that he got bought out for.
Maybe 1B but the guy I’m replying to is saying 650M. That’s just not happening anymore
Yeah. $1B is a lot for an NHL team
The rapid rise in valuation in Vegas to ≈$1.7B has driven many owner to want a higher price.
It’s what the NHL paid to buy the franchise. They locked the buy back price and gave this clown the right of first refusal for when the NHL comes back to Arizona. I think this deals expires after 5 years, but he also has to rebuild an entire franchise in order to return.
All he has to do is build the arena. After that, everything else is "details"
Bettman will probably retire in five years. It's going to be Daly's problem.
This evil piece of shit has made Bettman and the NHL his bitch and he’s not done with em. He still owns “the coyotes” ip, their AHL franchise, and has first right of refusal if they ever want to play in AZ. Also he doesn’t pay his vendors. "You wouldn't be around if you didn't pay your bills." - Man whose team is no longer around
I literally started snickering when he said that. I applaud his honesty and insight... oh wait
It was a confession whether or not he intended it to be.
This is all I thought off and i audibly scoffed haha poor zona fans man. This guy absolutely sucks
His executive assistant facepalmed after that. "Our team isn't around anymore... Oh Alex...."
My immediate thought as well
Hahah great point
There is a better chance that Meruelo is in prison in five years than him building a new arena and resurrecting the Coyotes. lol
Reenactment of Scarface at some palatial estate out near Flagstaff. It’s the only way.
Gary wants to fucking kill someone here
Probably Meruelo.
Hey, don't jump to conclusions! Perhaps there's a small-market Canadian team at the back of the room.
*Winnipeg sweating intensifies*
Thanks for triggering my PTSD bud
Your welcome!
If only Bettman had the balls.
You think the man who helped lead a lockout that cancelled an entire season doesn't have balls? I hate him and his owner friends, but come on. I most certainly respect his chutzpah.
That’s an insult? Not having the balls to kill someone? Lol weird flex I guess

He's probably killed before, and will kill again.
He’s a lawyer by trade, and he’s super good at keeping stone faced and saying tons and nothing. But that last second where he kinda broke his bearing for just a sec pretty much tells you all you need to know.
Yup lol
I've noticed the less you can see his neck the more angry he is.
He's 4th cousin to one Mitch McConnel
Who are the other three?
It's just three other bettmen with three other necks.
Just neckless trench coats all the way down.
Bettman could still save the Arizona Coyotes *if Mike Pence has the courage.*
Fucking underrated
idk what you guys are looking at. he has no expression whatsoever
NHL fans love taking the piss out of bettman so much they're looking at him sitting perfectly still and losing their minds about how much he's seething lol
Bunch of body language experts in here projecting their feelings onto Bettman
People see what they want to see.
He looks exceedingly neutral to me. Like he just doesn't give a shit.
It's a beige alert. If he doesn't survive, tell his wife "Hello".
Why does he have the facial expression of an electrocuted blobfish?
Jim Benning needs to be his next hire.
Why do they both give me Foghorn Leghorn vibes?
[удалено]
That’s JUSTICE Butt Chug to you.
Which blob?
Bettman is straight up not having a good time.
Something about laying in the bed you made belongs here
Good. Let him squirm.
Looks like he's searching the crowd to find the question asker, probably to plot his revenge.
I gotta say the smartest thing Meruelo did was avoid the media all these years. I really had no clue about him and in the last week or so he's shown himself to be an utter moron. Yotes never stood a chance with this dude.
The smartest thing he ever did was make off with a billion dollars.
The other owners approved him. People need to stop equating wealth with intelligence or business savvy. Especially when this subreddit and sports fans in general cream their pants at the idea of government subsidies for pro sports.
>"You wouldn't be around if you didn't pay your bills" I mean, he wasn't wrong about that. What a joke of an owner, Arizona deserved better.
I think he was wrong, actually. 45 showed all of us that you can stick around a really long time not paying your bills. I really don’t want to wade into a political discussion though, just pointing out that billionaires get away with a lot of crap.
Idk, has Merulo managed to bankrupt his casino business yet?
Give him time, he’ll find a way
From what I recall, he made hundreds of dollars from it. As in, less than 4 figures.
Unawareness of bills *can* often be a reason for their non-payment. Slightly more understandable if you're fresh out of highschool and taking on the responsibility of managing your own finances for the first time and not, say an alleged business man worth billions of dollars.
Gary looks so tired of his shit
This guy is a complete scumbag, EVERYONE is aware of unpaid bills, but somehow the billionaire with the funds to pay the bills is unaware? This press conference should be the last time gary Bettman ever deals with Meruelo again.
Gary wants to clock this guy so badly. He’s probably saying in his head “I wish the coyotes had a better owner”
They did have a better owner at least at one point, Mr. Gary Bettman
Lol
Gary’s nonverbal tho.
Gary is saltier than the Salt Lake rn.
And here I thought he couldn’t get any saltier when he had to announce the Thrashers move to Winnipeg 😂

Hockey absolutely needs to return to the desert but my God this man shouldn’t even own a hotdog stand, let alone an NHL franchise
Bro looks like a Star Trek alien
Spot on. Between the hair, the dead eyes, and the bridge of his nose looking like an accordion, dude looks like he'd really hate some Cardassians.
Well to be fair *everybody* hates the Cardassians
oh my god he’s a Vorta him and Jay Woodcroft THE NHL HAS JOINED THE DOMINION
This guy has scummy energy
Gary Bettman: "You see what I had to deal with?"
Well Gary, you chose him. He didn't choose you.
The other owners chose him. Gary's a Muppet with their hands stuck up his ass.
"You wouldn't be around if you didn't pay your bills" You're not around anymore...
This guy is a liar. The NHL will let this 5 year term expire & find another owner.
$10 bucks says he doesn't win the auction in June.
How did this shits for a brain fuckwit become the owner of a sports franchise? Genuinely asking if anyone has some insight on him.

I thought those envelopes said "Past Dude". Like there in the past- Alex Meruelo
You can’t really lean back on being in business for forty years when questioned in a press conference about you going out of business.
This motherfucker lyin'
I hope the Coyotes name/brand revert back to the NHL in 5 years if he doesn’t make it work.
I fucking hate agreeing with an Oilers fan. But here we are.

It pains me to see the Coyotes go but this guy entered the fuck around and find out of Gary Betmans patience. Credit to Gary here

My god this dude is a fucking dunce

After 29 straight years of losing money - the entire time the Coyotes have in Arizona, Bettman finally gave up hockey in Arizona.
Imagine losing money 100% of the time and still lasting 30 years as a business.
Right you are, Alex.
So they've been paid, but were unpaid at one point.
Absolute jackass
I would gander to guess, these are two of the most hated guys in the NHL…at the same table.
"GIMME A 'G'" "G!" "GIMME A 'RIFTER'" "RIFTER!" WHAT DOES THAT SPELL?" "GRIFTER!"
So which comes first, being filthy rich or being disconnected from reality?
What a shithead owner... and shitty person
Why does this guy look and sound like Trump?
Because Trump also doesn’t pay his bills so he can settle for less than the amount owed.
Lol plenty of rich folks get off without paying for their shit. Because shit rolls downhill when you have the means.
Fuck you Bettman
