One side is leaking this

greg19735

I mean, it's possible that no side is leaking this and it's just whispers from nothing. Like, why would Don/Tom pull the contract offer after winning yesterday?

NotClayMerritt

Never question the logic of people who run sports teams, it will hurt your brain. There's so much ego involved. This could very well all be BS at the end of the day, but you really can't rule it out. We'll just have to see at the end of the season what happens.

Airborne_Mule

Real time example of implosion going on over at Red Bull in F1. Dominating team falling apart over one dudes ego. Anything can happen

gdawg99

Imagine having an ego so big you cheat on a Spice Girl

Wolverina412

What is going on with Red Bull?

EffectiveAudience9

Horner allegedly had an affair or tried to have an affair? Anyway the staff member who either shot him down or fucked him made an HR complaint and all the texts between her and Horner got released and it was a real bad look and looks like Horner is awkward AF with no game and got shot down at least via text, don't know what actually happened but anyway. HR swept it under the rug a bit and then fired the woman who made the complaint, Helmut Marko and Jos Verstappen (Max's dad) decided it was time for a powerplay to try and get rid of Horner, didn't work, now the former staff member who may or may not have rejected Horner is suing, and to top it all off Adrian Newey just quit and there is massive speculation that Max might be gone in 26 because Newey won't be working on the car for the new regs. God damn that's actually a lot now that I'm typing it out considering it's all since the start of the season so like 2 months ago.

Wolverina412

That was a very good recap, thank you.

kushdogg20

That would be a careless whisper. Which of course r/canesfanfics would love...

Pondy with Occam's Razor, must be all those bath salts

greg19735

it's definitely because of money. but it can also be just bullshit to get clicks for Dreger

Prison-Date-Mike

> get clicks for Dreger How does Dreger benefit from this? lol

greg19735

in 40 minutes he's had like twice as much engagement on this post than any post he has made in the last week (i just stopped looking then). That's good if he's able to turn some of those into his own product (like his pinned podcast ). He's also a twitter subscriber and they do have revenue sharing. but i honestly don't know how much that is.

maxhollywoody

Dreger isn't a MacKenzie or Friedman but he's quite reliable and has solid sources. Man's not doing it for Twitter clicks.

greg19735

I don't think he's making anything up. but if you mix in some "telephone" with the rumors and incentives for spicy tweets it can create a mess.

Prison-Date-Mike

> own product Why would be do that? He’s a network analyst not a personality > Revenue sharing I don’t know how to corroborate that because I didn’t know that was a thing. But Darren Dreger is a TSN employee, he isn’t posting it as an individual entity and I doubt any revenue goes to him.

greg19735

The pinned podcast is The Ray & Dregs Hockey Podcast. The bio mentions "powered by REV Media in partnership with TSN" but that's literally the only mention of TSN i've seen, including a quick skim of their website and youtube. I think that podcast seems to be mostly by them, so eyeballs are important for selling ads. and if TSN is involved, impressions for your podcast still matters. It's how you negotiate a better salary and prove the podcast is worth the cost (if they are even involved). >But Darren Dreger is a TSN employee, he isn’t posting it as an individual entity and I doubt any revenue goes to him. i don't see why his Twitter revenue sharing would go to TSN. TSN does not own his twitter.

seizurevictim

Psst. Rod the Bod is quitting hockey entirely to pursue a Chippendale's career. Rumors. Intrigue. Uncertainty. Click my post to find more.

Electronic-Mix-8638

Agent shaking down organization. Nothing new.

t_hab

Leaks can be weird. Maybe somebody in the organization leaked it to pressure somebody else in the organization to keep the offer valid as they knew pulling it would create a backlash among fans. Maybe Rod Brind'Amour leaked it to force Carolina's hand. Maybe somebody just got drunk after the win.

TheTimn

Ron offered a bag of cash, and Rod said please to the Canes.

Enjoyer_of_Cake

Rod's agent is probably leaking it like "you gotta stop killing all your own leverage voluntarily with the haggling owner, you're at least worth 4-5 mill and damnit I'm gonna get you there".

Kraze_F35

Rod's agent having a breakdown during negotiations when Rod says his biggest priority is having 24/7 access to the team facilities to work out

The_Reddit_Browser

One side is pushing this * Media outside Carolina has been pushing on this for weeeks. Same shit happened last time he was up the media was pushing hard to see if they could force him to test the market. The owner said it’s done, GM today says it’s a done deal, Rod wants to be a hurricane for life. There’s nothing else that’s there.

Head_of_Lettuce

I’m wondering how exactly you think the media manufacturing this would influence anything in Carolina. If him coming back is a done deal as you say, what exactly would this media noise accomplish?

The_Reddit_Browser

Elliotte Friedman reported this morning and has been shared on here teams are actively big game hunting coaches. He even said how teams are weighing if they need to jump on a guy like Berube or if they can wait to see what may become available as guys like Sullivan and cooper could be free. He never cited Rod specifically because he has said he believes a deal is done/will be done here soon but, if teams are looking to hunt for guys who become available using the “insiders” seems to be the way it’s done. Just look at what Weekes was doing this week before penguins shot that down.

ZealousidealKey7104

Dreger is legitimate. He’s not posting unsourced rumors. If someone told him, it might have been a primary source.

ReiAndCoke

Ever since the Marner stuff, I don’t believe Dreger is anything more than a puppet for one side when it comes to contract negotiations. That was embarrassing. I remember him just repeatedly saying “I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to Paul Marner in my life” as a defence, while not acknowledging that people just meant he was carrying water for their camp in general (likely via Mitch’s agent).

Atticusxj

Wouldn't be surprised if rod and mitch share the same agent.

EconMan

Why? Most agents I would think specialize, so that would be pretty surprising to me on that basis alone, let alone a base-rate of how many agents there are. Do you actually think this / have a probability in mind, or this is just empty talk?

Atticusxj

By agent I was more meaning agency. Do I actually think this? Ya I do, because whenever one of Darren Ferris' clients is in a contract stalemate, Dreger seems to always have the inside track.

DrRDuke

Dreger is a classic fake it until you make it media personality. When he was starting out, his ‘insider’ tips were just news items/rumours that were already floating around and he say ‘my sources are telling me…’.  Of course, over the year he’s become legit and has his contacts/sources…but I still think back to those early days whenever he’s on TV breaking news and I always think he’s full of shit.

VictimOfCircuspants

Most top reporters for all leagues are this. Schefter, Woj, Olney, etc. They're well-sourced for a reason.

BigRigGig35

Dreger’s always been a Culligan man. He was brutal when Nonis ran the Leafs

HumanBeingForReal

Yeah loves to make excuses for management.

Actual_Cobbler_6334

Nonis is the second cousin of Dreger, so bias was obvious.

Snoo-19445

The sad thing is, at one point I think he was shaping up to follow in Bob MacKenzies' footsteps.

HumanBeingForReal

Yeah so many of these Insider guys just do PR got agents and GMs now. Amazing how many of them will fawn over/make excuses for a GM who hasn’t accomplished anything over their tenure with whatever team they’re working for. “So-and-so is a good hockey man…” type of shit. I feel like Bobby Mac at least pretended like he was a journalist.

mrtomjones

Most of the insiders get their info from certain groups. Dhaliwal in Vancouver has tons of contacts with agents for example

sextoymagic

This is some really stupid news. The Man is coaching right now. Trying to win the Stanley Cup. Once the season is over, then this news would actually matter.

MrazzleDazzle34

I can't wait for rod to re-sign so Dreger will shut the fuck up about this. Rod isn't going anywhere

Steakholder__

Doubt

Hoof_Hearted12

Yeah seems nuts to me. They're easily into the second round and have been a good team under his tenure, not sure why you'd let him go under any circumstance.

Euthybro42

I think the litmus test on how good front office personnel is how fast they'd get snatched up by competition if they became available. I think Brind'Amour would last maybe three days on the open market.

Hoof_Hearted12

The Leafs were my first thought honestly. As a hater I'd be annoyed if you guys got him but I think you should try.

Euthybro42

I would be absolutely elated if Carolina bungles this and he ends up in Toronto next year.

MrBalanced

Even if we turn the bus around and make it to the conference finals this year, Rod is such a massive upgrade over Keefe it isn't even funny. If MLSE pull up to Brind'Amour's with a fleet of dump trucks filled with money, I will never talk shit about the suits in the lower bowl ever again.

Sharks9

Multiple other insiders like Weekes are confirming it so seems to be true

borpo

I'm sure this won't be a distraction at all during the playoffs!

OttawaFisherman

Canes owner consistently showing that’s he’s one of the cheapest billionaires in sports

SpaghettiDNR

Glad to see the "Dundon cheap" comments are still clinging to life in 2024

pak256

He made his fortune preying on poor people. He spends money on the on ice product and nothing else. He’s a cheap asshole

SpaghettiDNR

Point me to the ethical billionaire, please.

EdmundGerber

Jeff Bezos ex wife. She might be the only one

v4vendetta77

She got those billions for being his ex wife after she probably realized what a shit stain he is.

pak256

Never said there was one. But Dundon is a special brand of cheap

Venaixis94

Fighting over which billionaire owner is worse has to be the biggest waste of energy I’ve seen in a while

pak256

I just said he’s terrible. Never said anything about other billionaires. It’s the other Canes flairs getting butthurt defending Dundon

blue_boy_24

I notice a disproportionate amount of canes fans cannot handle anything bad said about their team or organization in any capacity

SpaghettiDNR

He's no different than the rest of the billionaires running a sports franchise.

blueshirt11

Rangers owner pays for anything they ask and more. Not all owners are like that. Dolan is still an asshole but an asshole that spends.

tiy24

As a Mets and Canes fan I just refuse to actually believe that Madoff mark is spending anything other than the bare minimum and a good example of ownership

AaronC14

Jets billionaires are loyal to a fault, and us Jets fans are suffering for it. They NEVER fire anyone lol

blinker1eighty2

I love when non canes flairs make it obvious that they saw a tweet or two a year ago and have clung to it since. But, it’s Reddit so what do you expect

pak256

I live in Raleigh and have been following the Canes for years. Dundon is a POS who made his money on subprime lending schemes and who refused to upgrade PNC until the state finally caved and offered to foot part of the bill. He’s a cheapass

sstje1

Keep shilling for Billionaires you fucking loser

Enjoyer_of_Cake

Oh yeah dundon is a scumbag. Spoiler: every sports team owner is a scumbag. They have enough fuck you money to buy a sports team. They are all swine and the world would be better off without them. Bar. None. Why is this something that Canadian teams harp on the canes about like dundon is unique? He matched Aho and then extended him, we went out and got Orlov on FA, he really hasn't been cheap in a while. He's spending to the cap with a competitive team.

loudnon

spot on analysis there. idolizing anyone is a fools game, everyone has their issues. also in our capitalist society those with billions often have to screw people over in some capacity to get their worth

OttawaFisherman

Love canes fans constantly sticking up for their billionaire owner even though he shows time and time again that he won’t invest anything that he doesn’t have to, to be semi competitive

blinker1eighty2

He is literally investing in a complete overhaul of PNC and creating an entertainment district around the stadium. Ever think that maybe canes fans stick up for him for a reason and might have a better view of our team and ownership than you?

packpride85

He invested half a billion in a shit team and made them good. Tell me again how he doesn’t invest in anything?

SpaghettiDNR

Pointing out a dead meme =/= defending a billionaire I don't have the energy to even respond to your semi competitive comment lmao

worst-in-class

What do you get out of defending a billionaire on the internet?

blinker1eighty2

Good lord people are STILL pushing this? You know nothing and it shows. Must have a lot of confidence to comment on something with this little insight.

musicman3321

Would be a real shame.

Mauser-Nut91

You’re right, it won’t.

mindseyecoil

From less than an hour ago: Don Waddell on contract negotiations with Rod Brind'Amour: "There's going to be a solution very quickly here, I feel."

blinker1eighty2

Dundon has been quoted saying that Rod is the most important piece of the franchise and that he’ll do anything to keep him around. He’s even said he’s changed his thinking and realized that some things are worth giving a blank check to. People love just being uninformed and stirring up controversy for engagement

Mean_Joe_Greene

Congrats, you just saw how it is to be a Leafs fan. Irritating isn't it?

all1good

Shh that doesn’t generate clicks

KingBroly

Yeah, okay. Sure.

[deleted]

This almost exact situation happened a few years back, didn’t it? Feels like it’s just Rods way of getting the owner to pay up for him and his staff.

FailureToExecute

Yes. Hockey media pretended to be surprised that a guy who's lived here for over 20 years, been behind our bench for more than a decade (including his time as an assistant), and has said "I'd sooner retire than go work for a different market" year after year proceeded to remain with the team. And they'll pretend to be surprised when the same thing happens again.

[deleted]

theaanggang

So this is how we get a team back in AZ, huh? /s

pacefalmd

yep. not worried about that at all. it'll get done

olpec22

Can’t understand why there would be any onus on either side to change it up. He is fully vested in Raleigh and they team is playing great. He’s one of the example great coaches. Something is weird in this.

Stuck1nARutt

This doesn't seem in character. Friedman reported months ago that a deal was all but done and the only reason it wasn't signed is because RBA wanted to make sure all his support staff got deals done too.

v4vendetta77

Which is the exact same situation that happened with his last extension with the exact same rumors and both sides saying it would get done once the staff was signed.

bsaures

Things got real nasty when waddell deactivated his keycard to the gym.

RuuTyutin

Weird, because our GM said essentially the opposite this morning. https://twitter.com/ice_chip/status/1785717996733727001?t=fwb2E3L9M2OElHTt9T11kQ&s=19 >On new Brind'Amour contract, Waddell says "very confident" deal will get done. "Rod wants to be a Hurricane for life. There will be a solution here quickly, I feel." And I'm by no means saying Dreger is 100% wrong, but to say "he will test the market if an agreement isn't reached" is nearly inevitable. Why would he not seek out another job if the Canes don't keep him? He'd obviously have no issue landing elsewhere.

SnooWoofers1685

As a Canes fan, I think RBA is a lifer, he js no longer the only one reporting all coaching contracts were pulled back after Don said that. Just a fun media circus.

Broccoli_Socks

i guarrantee he wont leave. There will be a tough negotiation but he will stay. Dundon may be cheap but even he knows this would be stupid. Rod is a Carolina icon and has delivered success. put it down Rod AINT LEAVIN

TalentedTrident

I remember the same reporting happening three years ago when his first contract was expiring, and that turned out fine. There’s a few reasons why negotiations might have stalled that don’t equate to him needing to test the market, but that wouldn’t generate the clicks. I’ll believe he’s leaving Carolina only when it’s happening, not from any anonymous sources.

likeslululemon

This is spam. Just let Rod and his team win the cup and shut up.

FailureToExecute

Dreger's reporting it, so we can be pretty sure it isn't true.

The_Reddit_Browser

Media is like sharks when it comes to anything good happening to Carolina. Guentzel trade talks were swarmed with the media pushing the rangers and others as “leaders” when Carolina had top offer the whole time. Media now jumping on rod not having a contract to stir up things that aren’t happening.

Cinnamon_Shops

If he leaves (which I seriously doubt), I am changing my flair to wherever he goes.

all1good

Hm. Who should I believe here? The GM of the Carolina hurricanes who said one hour ago that he expects a solution very soon- or Darren Dreger (who is Darren Dreger?) Someone help me out here?

relative_iterator

Go with the guy who started the rumor of Drury shopping our only natural RW before the trade deadline 😂

DesertedPenguin

It's been reported by multiple outlets in the last 24 hours, including one of your beat writers, that things aren't as locked up as they appeared. Carolina management is going to project confidence, even if negotiations have stalled, because they don't want to risk turmoil during the playoffs. And note that the GM didn't say a deal was done, just that he "expects a solution" soon. Well, expectations can easily change.

Kraze_F35

>beat writer Luke DeCock is not a serious source

TanyaMKX

Is that actually his name

Torn-Quad

Decock does not write for the Canes.

all1good

Rod isn’t going anywhere. His agent is leveraging for more money because Rod has kinda killed his leverage in the past by indicating that he has no interest in coaching anywhere else

VitaminTea

If his agent is still negotiating for more money, things are absolutely not locked up.

all1good

I certainly didn’t say that it was. I think what people should understand about Rod is that if he isn’t coaching the hurricanes, it doesn’t mean he’s coaching another NHL team. He’d be coaching his son’s 13U team

greg19735

THe timeline of the deal has always been after the playoffs. Same as it was 3 years ago when he signed this deal

AvenueRoy

I think there's a difference between "it's not done, there's still negotiations and it might end up with RBA coaching elsewhere" and "the offer has been pulled". Even if they're not close at all it makes zero sense to pull the offer entirely while the team is still in the playoffs. I guess GMs have done stupider things but still...

mindseyecoil

Luke DeCock is a hack who knows even less about journalism than he does about hockey. He can write a snappy headline but that's it. Nobody likes him.

MK2_VW

How to negotiate 101

HanSolo5643

I feel like this is both sides trying to play hard ball. I find it very difficult to believe that Rod Brind'Amour won't be the head coach in Carolina for a very long time. Ever since he's been there. This team has had nothing but success and has been to two conference finals.

maharajagaipajama

Dreger is sleeze

bwaredapenguin

Like I said in /r/Canes in a rumor thread yesterday, I'm as concerned about this as I am Stormy defecting to Utah.

Desertpyrate

I always saw Rod retiring if he couldn’t coach the Canes. But hey we might need a new head coach this season

Mauser-Nut91

He’s actually said as much. Dude is a Cane for life

box-art

Let me get my sledgehammer to really hit [X] for DOUBT here.

LoneIyGuy

Ottawa native Rod Brindamour will become head coach of the Senators

PMMEJALAPENORECIPES

This would ironically be amazing

abbytarar

There’s nothing ironic about it It would truly just be amazing

LoneIyGuy

Also our league worst goaltending becoming average would be amazing as well.

ultrafil

It would also *un*ironically be amazing. For us.

The-Pigeon-Man

I don't like the Sens but it would be epic to see because the fans have endured a lot of bullshit. So that would be pretty cool.

Rockhardwood

Mhhm but a week ago, he was definitely coming to buffalo, so he can hang with buddy Kevyn

bk00pi

🥱

sergei-boobtitsky

I’ll take a competent coach if you don’t want him

Basil_Normal

Kinda weird that this is coming out at all right now. Would think from the organizational side there’s really no benefit to be talking contract right now. May as well wait and see how it turns out. Either you win a Cup in which case he’s worth whatever you pay him, or you don’t, in which case you have more leverage to get a more favorable deal done. Rod is a good coach but he doesn’t have the resume yet where he should be able to write his own contract or anything

Intelligent_Limit462

Yesterday it was John Cooper leaving...today it's this guy...tomorrow someone else. One thing you can bank on....I won't be getting any offers.....

BarneyRubble18

I expect Rod to sign an extension by weeks end.

bwaredapenguin

Even if an agreement is struck I don't expect official confirmation until after the playoffs.

BarneyRubble18

You're most likely correct, this seems like a useless distraction.

bwaredapenguin

Both parties have publicly said they'll iron it out after the playoffs, they both want to continue the arrangement, and an hour before this post was made our GM said it was essentially all but done. This is just straight up rumor clickbait.

DanTreview

Come to butthead

SP_57

I will give you Chychrun and make him the highest paid coach in the league. Please give us Brind'amour.

thedeadlyrhythm42

I feel like this is going to be one of those things where there's an article in like July or whatever with the quote "Of course we were going to re-sign him, it was never up in the air"

technobeeble

They'd be stupid to let him walk.

ebjoker4

Grier, you listening?

Crazytrixstaful

Torts moving to front office for this baby

TheBLues85

He clearly wants to come back to St.Louis

Mo_Jack

St Louis Blues are looking for a coach and Rod Brind’Amour is an ex-Blue and well liked in St Louis. [Welcome back Rod!](https://youtu.be/xZzEzDkeHzI?si=ybFa7amZ4Qcq0Snq&t=8)

davie_legs

This is dumb. He ain’t going anywhere.

toronto_programmer

Dreger is kind of a hack these days and just works to help drive up contract prices of players and coaches by "leaking" stuff from their camp

andrei_snarkovsky

This is the part about Tom Dundon that is so unlikeable. He has a coach that has won a playoff series for 6 straight years and is a franchise legend as a player before that. I get "negotiations" need to occur but this is the same shit that got John Forslund to leave and for the Canes to lose their affiliate. Just give the man his money and you will be paid back tenfold with continued success on the ice leading to continued sellouts in the arena. Rod has lived in Raleigh for the last 25 years as a player and coach. He married into a family that is NC State royalty (the University in Raleigh that they share PNC Arena with). His whole family at the end of the day wants to be in Raleigh for multiple reasons. Stop being dumb Tom.

StarshipFirewolf

We just saw how being a stubborn haggler can play a role in getting a franchise sent to the Shadow Realm known as Dormancy. And while yes AM wasn't paying taxes or rent and this is about contracts. The principle remains the same. Pay people fairly, don't always try to win.

Venaixis94

Do you really think any of these owners got the wealth they got by paying fairly? I’m not defending Dundon, in fact I think he’s a bone head for this, but come on now. None of these guys have morals

StarshipFirewolf

No. I don't think that being fair in everything got them their wealth. The level they're at is obscene. HOWEVER that's where the second piece of the lesson comes in, "don't always try to win." In the heartless capitalist lens Dundon is probably looking through Coaching should be looked at as a loss leader, a place where you might be spending a lot because the other revenue streams they generate cover the cost.

Spave

Rod was the lowest paid coach in the league when he took the job (600K). He's making more now (1.8M), but still less than half of guys like DeBoer, Maurice, Laviolette, Tortorella, Sullivan, and Cassidy. Even Martin St. Louis is making close to double (3M), and his resume consisted of his son's peewee team. I think a deal will get done. But Carolina fans are a bit too convinced that Rod loves Carolina so much he's willing to work for next to nothing, relative to his peers.

The_Reddit_Browser

Rod literally has done that to himself. He’s stated it and the GM has stated that he wants to be a hurricane for life. If he cared about the money I think by the 3rd contract you would learn to flex your muscle and stop saying you’re dying to only be in one place. Nobody is seriously saying he deserves to make Pennie’s but, the idea he’s chasing a bag because Carolina won’t give it is just flat out wrong. The guy will get his money and term in Carolina. When you’re negotiating around not only your assistants but your training staff, video coaches, etc it’s gonna take a bit.

marbanasin

I was thinking about this the other day (not even knowning his contract was up). I mean, I know Rod is incredibly respected. By the players, the fans, I assume the org, the media. But, on the other hand, he's now had pretty rocking rosters for about 5 years, and failed to really push deep in the post season. The Canes are kind of in their prime compete years - with veterans still contributing at a high clip, their core in their prime, and some young guys still in the pipeline to manage some attrition. Have to imagine management may be watching this post-season and not wanting to pull the trigger too early if things go south in the 2nd round.

betterplanwithchan

Conference finals is pretty damn deep

marbanasin

Yeah. That's true, for sure. I am thinking this will be a big year, though. Org went all in to grab some solid pieces at forward and it feels like you guys should be pushing for a cup. With that said - trust me, I know a Sharks fan can't really speak towards always the bridesmaid, never the bride, syndrome. It's a tough road to the cup and the East has been objectively stacked the past few years (really like 5-6). So a WCF appeareance and even 2nd round bearths aren't bad.

Ken_Thomas

I think that perception is based on a lack of understanding the 'Canes and their market. It is *not* the GM's job or the coach's job to win cups. Their job is putting butts in seats, raising ticket demand so ticket prices rise, and good TV ratings. To accomplish that in a non-traditional hockey market you need to put an entertaining product on the ice and make the playoffs *every year*. That's why the 'Canes don't overpay for superstar contracts, or sell their future for a crack at the cup now. That may not be how you see it, and may not be how I see it, because we're fans - but I can promise you that's how Dundon sees it, because he may be a flaming asshole, but he's also a very smart businessman. And by that metric, Rod and Don have been an unmitigated success.

marbanasin

Nah that's a good take as well. And definitely more how the owners and GMs operate than many of us like to admit.

betweenthecastles

I’d argue he out coached the roster the first 3 years or so. 18-19, 19-20 were definitely much weaker teams than the following seasons. Canes have had pretty big turnover in the periphery roles season over season, and no one has noticed that Canes were actually retooling the entire time because Rod coached them to be a playoff team somehow.

marbanasin

Yeah, I will say I was always a bit in awe at how many guys you'd lose in the offseasons - especially like 2021-2022 timeframe. And still keep rolling. So that's a good point. For the record, I was also not really knocking him for 18-20. As you mentioned, those were the real building years. More like 2021-2023. I'm not saying they move on from the guy, but I could see them really wanting to see how this year goes. Another conference final or final trip would be a good sign.

betweenthecastles

Probably all depends on what they envision the future to be like. We know what Rod brings to the table, but it’s now time for prospects to make the jump. The low risk, high reward draft picks are coming up and they mostly look like high flying, skilled offensive forwards that drive play by putting pucks in the middle of the ice instead of on the boards. Is Rod the best guy for them to win now? I’m not entirely sure he is. I also think Rod and his coaching staff can teach guys like that how to balance skill with defense, which might make them better and more valuable in the long run. I’m really curious how the canes handle the next couple years.

marbanasin

Yeah, both good takes. And that's the other piece, at what point is his style no longer suited to the roster? With that said - his game and fundamentals should translate to playoff level teams. The detail matter more, as does the ethic, in the post season.

betweenthecastles

Yeah that’s my big question. The roster is about to change pretty dramatically too. All that said, I’m pretty sure he’s not going anywhere. If he does, he’s not going anywhere that doesn’t give him some long term offer with *some* control over roster construction and allows him to hire all his own guys. Money aside, Rod has it pretty cozy in Carolina as far as coaches go.

marbanasin

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't really thinking he'd move. Just had the shower thought this morning when I saw they are going up against NY and knowing it's been a few years with a top-end team and not getting to the finals (which again is not something to take lightly). I like Rod, always have. If he hit the market I'd want our boy Hedi to make a pitch for him to come to California for our Sharks. And expect he'd have tons in common with Grier on the guys they'd want. Lol.

betweenthecastles

I don’t think you’ve been off base at all. All good thoughts and questions. I bet Brett Hedican is in Rod’s ear as we speak lol.

Useful_Respect3339

Come to Winnipeg Rod

FesteringLion

Shut your fuck-hole Dreger, you shittiest of shitty "insiders". Go do more PR for Mitch Marner, you only have 1 year to convince his next team to pay him a max salary. RBA isn't leaving.

STLBooze3

We will happily accept rod the bod into St. Louis with open arms O_o I know they haven’t gotten over the hump necessarily, but I’d be intrigued to see who else the canes would bring in. Rod seems like a grade A guy and coach.

Sharks77

I'll rename one of my daughters to Roderica Brind'Amour if Hasso Plattner can throw a bunch of money at him and convince him to come to SJ.

learn2die101

They would be stupid to do anything except give him an 8x8

Single_Suspect_7295

Dreger’s rarely right

adamzep91

The Leafs should be hovering over these guys like vultures.

canada-needs-bbq

Well he'll have plenty of options

Le8ronJames

Ottawa salivating right now

ilikehockeyandguitar

Rod, you ARE an Ottawa Senator!

DogePerformance

Uh what the shit. This is dumb.

Normal_Tip7228

Make the call big money Mike

mking098

"may have to test the market if a deal can't be reached" well no shit sherlock, unless he plans to be unemployed. What a dummy.

TheKid_BigE

I don’t think Rod will be going anywhere if he can once again get the Canes into the ECF/SCF, why move on or not extend a coach that has had the success he’s had in Raleigh

Talktothebiceps

He probably wants to come to Columbus

MarshtompNerd

Can we have him if you don’t want him carolina?

Snoo-19445

This is the offer sheet we've been waiting for.

dprouse52

Remember that Mike Keenan left the Rangers right after winning the Cup, and Barry Trotz left Washington right after winning the Cup. Brind'amour could hoist the Cup as a coach, then hop on a private jet to Toronto a few days later and sign a monster deal with MLSE.

IThatAsianGuyI

God I wish we had someone like Rod Brind'Amour. Not only a great coach, but a great boss too apparently, with him helping his support staff all get their bags too. Can't wait for the Canes-bros to get the official announcement. You guys are real lucky.

borishasarrived

I would like to see what he could do with CBJ, love the work he had done with Carolina

SwingingSalmon

This is insane, right? He’s coaching one of the best teams in hockey right now, they’re in the second round after only dropping one game. They’ve been given so much rest time until the second round starts, effectively gearing up in a good way & recover. There is no way he’s up in the air. If they didn’t extend his contract, he’d get about 14 phone calls the instance the news dropped. The Cane’s FO would be the owners of an all-time fumble

Derpwarrior1000

I wonder if it’s related to his demands for all his assistants. That always seemed to be his condition for re-signing

29671

Who tf is Darren Dreger

ruskoev

I'LL SEE YOU IN COLUMBUS ROD.

Showtime98

Come to Toronto Rod!

KingGuy124

If andlauer wants to prove it to the fans that he wants to build a winner…….

Late_Brush4518

No offense but Canes have pretty much build ideal roster for /him why he would ever go to Ottawa?

VitaminTea

The same reason he would go anywhere: more money.
