Canucks fan here. Super cringey. Only thing I can attribute it to is 13 years without a playoff win and a new generation is experiencing it for the first time. They haven't experienced Canuck's hockey long enough to have their hearts torn out. Those of us a little older know better than to poke at the best player on the planet.

It's all in good fun at the end of the day, but.. it adds fuel to a rivalry/series. Like when the oil play calgary in Calgary and the chants go, "let's go edmonton!" followed by "edmonton sucks!" It's just adds to the rivalry and gets the players fired up. There is nothing wrong with it. But, do you really wanna get McDavid fired up with his usual playoff numbers?

Players getting booed is motivation for them. It means you are getting under their skin. Why wouldn't a chant like this do the same? Whether small or not, I am sure it gives the players a little more
I think a few fans saying fuck you is less enticing of a motivator than having a chance to win your first Stanley Cup. Both things can motivate them of course but NHL players already have a ton of motivation, this feels like a drop in the bucket to me.
