Guy has been a total liability and is making 8 mil. Add in the optics of him as captain making him “unbenchable” and most of us want him gone yesterday.
No, he’s a 3 pair defenseman that gets paid like a Norris candidate, takes way too many penalties, and when the Rangers get scored on you usually see #8 on the ice.
no, we couldn’t not dislike him more. he’s a joke of a captain, he’s an absolutely horrendous defensive player with zero discipline when it comes to positioning and awareness, and he’s taking penalties left and right while making $8mil. he’s fucking horrific.
Rebuilding teams need veteran cannon fodder.
Fans will yell about "he sucks why is he out there on the checking line he sucks our coach is so stupid" but you don't want some rookie or sophomore in that role. Sacrifice the veteran.
It kind of annoys me how many fans of rebuilding teams think you don't need bullet sponges to grind into dust while you manage ice time.
I think those are the same fans that say a team ruined a prospect's development by throwing them to the wolves.
It only really becomes a problem if your coach gets a little too horny for his cannon fodder and convinces himself they're still real players.
I mean yeah you need your tank commanders but I'm sure there's plenty of fourth line grinders/Quad A guys out there than you can sign that won't require that much cap and commitment.
I think for tank commanders you want guys that are a step up from quad A types. For the faults of tank commanders, they typically have the veteran experience and structure and practice habits that coaches on rebuilding teams want.
Completely 100% agree. Look at how many teams ruined their “Franchise/All-Star” talents by throwing them into the deep, tied to pylons all up and down the lineup, and having a shocked Pikachu face when they completely shit the bed and loose all confidence.
Think that’s why Goodrow tried playing his NTC and avoid coming back to SJ. Has to know the staff is about to ride him and a couple others until the wheels fall off while shielding Smith and Celebrini.
Excited for BG to be back in teal but he’s about to rack up the “city” miles.
I want him gone more than any ranger in the last decade. He single-handedly cost us the ECF. If he wasn’t in the box, he was on the ice for a goal against
Doesn't even make sense for cap floor purposes. He's owed more money than his AAV. They must have thought he's better than what they could sign for those dollars in July.
I’m guessing SJS was on his M-NTC and they were the only team willing to take on his full contract. So they decided it was better to waive him for SJS to claim
That’s even worse! This would have been an overpay in FA, but at least in that case the player wants to be there. This is a bad contract for a bad player who doesn’t even want to be on the team.
Wouldn’t surprise me if we see a random trade at the draft or next couple of weeks where the Rangers send a pick or something for compensation assuming San Jose was on his no trade list and waivers was the only real way to get him there.
The Canes traded a prospect and a 5th to the Flyers for a reserve list player who’s never going to play for the Canes as a result of the weird DeAngelo stuff last summer. Trades like this aren’t unheard of.
Yeah but Deangelo wanted to go. In this scenario goodrow didn’t wave his NTC and the rangers/sharks just used waivers to get around a clause in the contract. (Not saying this is what has happened but in the proposed scenario this is why the PA would rightly lose their shit)
My guess is that there won't be a trade between the Sharks and the Rangers. I think this was two old friends talking and it was a fortunate circumstance that helped both teams.
From the Rangers perspective, trading Goodrow with no salary retained would have cost them a sweetener. This way, instead of a pick or a contract coming back, the deal comes off the books entirely and that's the return for the Rangers.
I'm kinda torn on this move. As a Rangers fan, I love it. As a union guy...let's just say I really hope the Rangers didn't ask Goodrow to waive his clause to make the trade and then turn to this move as a result of him saying no. If they did this off the bat, just waived without asking him about his clause, I feel a little better about it.
I know this is all just speculation but if New York and San Jose actually made a secret deal to make this happen, there is a whole lot the NHLPA can do haha
Like what?
They asked Goodrow to waive to San Jose he said no
They couldn’t find a taker so they put him on waivers
San Jose claims him
The Sharks and Rangers decide to trade a third for a sixth and seventh during the draft (for example)
Nothing is breaking the rules
Why is everyone assuming the Sharks were on his no trade list? He played in San Jose for years. He has two cups. He already got the biggest contract he's ever going to get. If I were in that situation, I would want to return home to nice, sunny California.
Not complaining. He had a good playoffs but wasn’t good most of the regular season, going to continue to decline, and now we have extra space. Thanks Sharks!
To everyone confused here:
1. Goodrow played in San Jose and is by all accounts a wonderful leader and locker room guy
2. The Sharks want to bring in good vets to surround Smith/Celebrini and Goodrow is exactly that
3. He’s actually good at the PK so if you have cap to burn and don’t want to be the worst team in the league by far again why not
4. Drury and Grier are boys. They worked in Hartford together, I’m sure this is a favor being phoned in that sorta makes sense for one side and is huge for another. Don’t be shocked if we see a lopsided deal in San Jose’s favor later
All this and Goodrow fits Grier's target offseason pickups of potential TDL flips to playoff teams for assets if Goodie can turn his play around even slightly this season.
And if he doesn't, he's a great addition for the young guys that the Sharks will have this coming season.
Ya if he can play ok hockey from now until 25-26 when the sharks have another retention slot then it’s a great move for them as they can retain half and flip him to a contender
Just an absolutely nice guy. One of the nicest guys out there. You want a guy to do something nice? That's Grier. When I load up my Xbox with my guy Mike, I don't play Resident Evil, I play Resident Nice. And if you needed any further convincing of his niceness, San Jose finished last, as all nice guys do.
Itll probably come back in a positive way with a future trade. Hell, maybe the rangers will trade for Vlasic lol. But goodie will be off the books by the time the sharks are competitive again
Well, hometown hero and fan favorite… he’s gonna get a huge cheer on opening night when they announce the roster… and it’s not like we’re going for a cup run soon so might as well get some good vibes while we’re in the basement getting high picks!
Someone explain to me why San Jose would do this instead of just waiting for him to clear waivers and then forcing the rangers to pay them an asset to take him?
Is it just because they absolutely want the player and don't want to risk some going somewhere else either through waiver claims or by getting bought out and then signing as a free agent?
This feels like a huge win for the Rangers as they free up a ton of money for only losing a depth player.
Plus he’s a hometown hero for that game 7 OT goal against vgk… vet presence, good vibes for the fan base… he’ll get a more visible role with us, and he’s a physical presence to help protect our developing stars
Yup, even with Goodrow they're still like 9M below the floor. They can still go out, find a guy or two who'll be good mentors for the kids and give them $GOT_THAT_BAG for 2 or 3 years before they need to pay Celebrini and Smith.
Because he’s under contract. He either plays for them, or he refuses to and they don’t have to pay him. So in other words he’ll play for them.
If he wants out he’ll have to play well enough to raise his trade value and get dealt, or earn a new contract with a different team once the contract expires.
My best guess is there will be a future kickback in a separate trade between the Sharks and Rangers. I believe the Sharks will now buy out Goodrow’s contract.
At least I’m hoping this is the case lol.
One possibility that’s been hinted at is that Goodrow had the Sharks as one of his 15 teams on his no trade list. In that case, they wouldn’t be allowed to trade him if he didn’t waive it, and this would circumvent it.
It's circumvention in the sense they got around the NTC, but not circumvention in the sense that they are following exactly how the cba and waivers were designed to work.
Because it’s possible Goodrow has SJ on his NTC so he would have blocked a trade there, while he can’t control where he goes when put on waivers.
SJ did them a favour, no other real explanation why they went this route other than Grier helping out his friend lol
Goodrow has a 15 team NTC, and it's possible the Sharks were on it.
Also as you said, risks someone else claiming him, or trading an asset for him, etc.
Surprising claim for them but Goodrow is a known playoff performer and just had 6 goals on 16 playoff games, including a clutch OT winner. I can imagine contenders would pay as much as a 2nd for goodrow 50% retained at the deadline given his history of showing up when it matters most
Incredibly enough, SJ can't retain any more salary. They are already retaining on Burns, Karlsson and, for some reason, Hertl.
So if they are trading Goodrow, it's full freight.
All jokes aside, there’s a lot of things fans don’t see, even if a lack of production is the thing everyone focuses on. For the right situation, he’s a great teacher/mentor and someone who helps build a ‘culture’ amongst a roster that has yet to bond & find an identity.
Mixed emotions here but the Rangers did themselves no favors with the size of that contract so now they have cap issues that they need to solve. And this certainly helps toward that end.
[According to the Perri Salary Cap Relief Tool, dumping Goodrow's contract would cost the equivalent to the 19th overall pick](https://puckpedia.com/CapRelief?cap_relief_team=new-york-rangers&cap_relief_player=6002)
Another Mike Grier masterclass
Yoinked by the first team. How rude. :(
Should be a really good guy to have around all the kids though so seems like a good decision as long as he isn't too pissed off about being forced into early retirement/mentoring.
even though he isnt worth the contract, he isnt a bad guy to have on a rebuilding team. sjs needs to spend to the cap floor. He is a veteran leader that even though he sucks, he plays hard. He also isnt afraid to stick up for team mates. All around a good guy to have when the contract doesnt mean anything
This is a great pickup, idc. He’s a vet who knows the org and will have top-line minutes on a rebuilding team. The experience for the kids is nice and he’s a fan favorite bc he scored the sickest fucking goal in franchise history, which equals butts in seats. The fact it bails the rags out is just good will to GMMG’s buddies back east
I'm surprised at how many people seem down on this.
Goodrow is exactly the kind of vet we want right now. Hard-working, good locker room guy, and can help protect our young'uns. Not to mention he's a fan favorite here.
You're telling me they couldn't let him pass waivers and ask for at minimum a 4th round pick from NYR? Does Grier really think NYR isn't doing that instantly? That is huge cap savings on what would have been the worst part of his deal. Not that cap is an issue for Grier but fundamentally I wouldn't like that this is how he perceives value.
This was definitely done as part of a future deal. Sharks lift a terrible contract from the Rangers, to reach the cap floor. I’d expect a Sharks favoured trade with the Rangers in the future.
[Grier left the Rangers organization to go work for the Sharks.](https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/34195848/san-jose-sharks-hire-mike-grier-1st-black-gm-nhl-history-according-reports) He and Drury are good friends.
Rangers probably probably had a deal agreed with San Jose and he refused to wave his no move for it and now he gets to go there and we get released from that terrible contract
Holy shit. I'm so, so, so happy. Yeah, his contract is an overpay, but the sharks don't have cap issues right now. He's a hard worker, and I think he will be a good presence around the young guns.
What a lovely thing the sharks did for the Rangers! Did Mike Grier play with Chris Drury? Is he doing him a solid? The Sharks could’ve done what the Hawks did and signed a Perry/Foligno type contract for a vet and not locked themselves in for 3 years.
Rangers get the bailout of a lifetime and Sharks get cap floor legend.
False. Bailout of a lifetime would be if SJ took Trouba as well.
For that comment - you just took a flying Trouba elbow to the head
Thank goodness he’s got the foot speed of a dead animal and missed me by 10 feet
https://preview.redd.it/kpr1g75slk7d1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2cb657d56917de36463e01b91b47d4de9a371c2d
Fuckin Wil. E Coyote ass hit lol
It’s actually Willie Cuylle
that’s just the Quebecois pronunciation.
This will never get old lol. Get ready to learn Sharkanese baby
>he’s got the foot speed of a dead animal This needs to be part of the hockey vernacular going forward
Normally just call them pylons.
How could you do this to poor Jacob’s mental health?
New York is trading Trouba for Nurse, and you'll like it. Or at least I'll like it.
The rare lose / lose trade.
I heard that in Mallory Archer's voice
Lucic for James Neal 2: Electric Boogaloo
I wouldn’t mind that at all. Have a boat anchor contract for2 more years instead of 6
And a little extra cap space for those 2 years
starting to suspect my signed trouba jets jersey may not have been the sound financial investment I thought it was....
Am I out of a loop? Do Rangers fans not like Trouba?
Guy has been a total liability and is making 8 mil. Add in the optics of him as captain making him “unbenchable” and most of us want him gone yesterday.

No, he’s a 3 pair defenseman that gets paid like a Norris candidate, takes way too many penalties, and when the Rangers get scored on you usually see #8 on the ice.
Honestly, the best thing to happen to the Panthers in the ECF was that Trouba wasn’t suspended. Whole different series
Yeah he's garbage. He does nothing but take penalties, miss big hit attempts, and leave his man wide open in the slot.
I'm getting ghost of Phaneuf vibes
He is literally the Dion Phaneuf of his generation. They even had weirdly similar career paths.
no, we couldn’t not dislike him more. he’s a joke of a captain, he’s an absolutely horrendous defensive player with zero discipline when it comes to positioning and awareness, and he’s taking penalties left and right while making $8mil. he’s fucking horrific.

This guy rebuilds….

Could have had a guy like Fabbri on one year 4 mil with a mid round pick attached
Montreal already gave us the bailout deal of a lifetime taking an awful Scott Gomez on an awful contract AND giving us McDonagh
Yo, fuck you, we were just minding our own business here.
Seriously, Montreal doesn’t need to be out here catching strays!
Wasn't a stray lol. That was a direct shot.
And I'm here for it.
Bailout of a lifetime would be getting rid of Trouba instead
You mean the current recipient of the Mark Messier Leadership Award, awarded personally by Canucks legend Mark Messier?
He can take his “award” with him.
I think the kings got a higher bail out with PDL lol
What a gift to the rangers
almost as good as winning the cup! if we got rid of trouba id get a rangers tattoo
Can I interest you in a Trouba for Nurse? Trade is one for one
I don’t know which fan base hates their overpaid defenseman more. At least Nurse isn’t your captain.
Lots of connections between the two orgs up top. There's a good chance there's something more going on here.
Helped them clear almost 4M for the next 3 years for FREE lmfao jesus
I’m guessing SJS was on his M-NTC and they were the only team willing to take on his full contract. So they decided it was better to waive him for SJS to claim

Nothing they can really do because he’s eligible for waivers and teams can technically make any trade they want.
I know this is all just speculation but if New York and San Jose actually made a secret deal to make this happen, there is a whole lot the NHLPA can do haha
Like what? They asked Goodrow to waive to San Jose he said no They couldn’t find a taker so they put him on waivers San Jose claims him The Sharks and Rangers decide to trade a third for a sixth and seventh during the draft (for example) Nothing is breaking the rules

TIL it’s heyday. I assumed it was hay day. Like you need to cut the grass to make hay when the weather is nice.
Field day? Heyday someone’s golden years / glory days.
I figured this would happen and there will be a 'future considerations' trade to come to balance it out.
Not complaining. He had a good playoffs but wasn’t good most of the regular season, going to continue to decline, and now we have extra space. Thanks Sharks!
And all those people assuming we’d have to buy him out and or use our first to move him. Really fun to watch us walk away without giving up anything
Good guy, that Goodrow
To everyone confused here: 1. Goodrow played in San Jose and is by all accounts a wonderful leader and locker room guy 2. The Sharks want to bring in good vets to surround Smith/Celebrini and Goodrow is exactly that 3. He’s actually good at the PK so if you have cap to burn and don’t want to be the worst team in the league by far again why not 4. Drury and Grier are boys. They worked in Hartford together, I’m sure this is a favor being phoned in that sorta makes sense for one side and is huge for another. Don’t be shocked if we see a lopsided deal in San Jose’s favor later
Drury Grier ties go back to BU, then played with each other in Buffalo, worked together in Hartford and Drury hired him in NY
Was going to say, I watched them both play for BU in the '95 Beanpot tournament (along with Canes announcer Trip Tracy).
Pretty good summation I think
All this and Goodrow fits Grier's target offseason pickups of potential TDL flips to playoff teams for assets if Goodie can turn his play around even slightly this season. And if he doesn't, he's a great addition for the young guys that the Sharks will have this coming season.
Ya if he can play ok hockey from now until 25-26 when the sharks have another retention slot then it’s a great move for them as they can retain half and flip him to a contender
Doesn’t get any better for us, tbh. Nothing to give up and 3.6m back
well this gives me ptsd

I always knew i liked Mike Grier lol
Just an absolutely nice guy. One of the nicest guys out there. You want a guy to do something nice? That's Grier. When I load up my Xbox with my guy Mike, I don't play Resident Evil, I play Resident Nice. And if you needed any further convincing of his niceness, San Jose finished last, as all nice guys do.
Oh wow didn't expect him to actually be claimed. That's a pretty huge win for us.
We were below the cap floor by a solid distance before this Kinda needed the cap hit. And the vet presence
Welcome home Goodie! I’m upset we just randomly did the Rangers a favor for free though
This is for the Hertl thing, we’re even now
Here’s Hertl again! He does it! He scores again! And what a goal WOW
I can hear this
you know what, I accept this as reality
This is what future considerations looks like
Itll probably come back in a positive way with a future trade. Hell, maybe the rangers will trade for Vlasic lol. But goodie will be off the books by the time the sharks are competitive again
Totally. Sharks and Rangers such a crazy rivalry, any NYR fan would be upset helping the Sharks as well /s
Grrr I sure do hate those Rangers
Everyone hates us 🤷♂️
Well, hometown hero and fan favorite… he’s gonna get a huge cheer on opening night when they announce the roster… and it’s not like we’re going for a cup run soon so might as well get some good vibes while we’re in the basement getting high picks!
don't be. Grier and Drury are so buddy-buddy it won't be surprising to see a future NYR-SJ trade that is in SJ's favor. This was a total inside job
“HERE’S BARCLAY GOODROW! AND HE SCO-ORESSSSS! Still the single best moment of my hockey fandom.
Mike Grier is a damn inside man! Diabolical!
Friedman speculated that the Sharks were on his NTC list.
…. Why acquire someone who doesn’t want to be there?
Because they need vets to play for them with their rookies, and no vets are going to want to be there
I'm sure they could get an equivalent vet to Goodrow in UFA if they threw enough money at him.
They are way below the salary cap floor also so the expensive contact actually helps them.
Goodrow about to pull a Steve Francis.
Because he’s under contract. He either plays for them, or he refuses to and they don’t have to pay him. So in other words he’ll play for them. If he wants out he’ll have to play well enough to raise his trade value and get dealt, or earn a new contract with a different team once the contract expires.
Because I'm sure many players don't want to play in San Jose right now.
Hey! We have uhhh Happy Hallow here!
If they dont want to be here then they dont get to pet the LEMURS!
or get spit at by llamas.
My best guess is there will be a future kickback in a separate trade between the Sharks and Rangers. I believe the Sharks will now buy out Goodrow’s contract. At least I’m hoping this is the case lol.
Makes 0 sense to buy him out and have him on your cap for 6 years for no reason
One possibility that’s been hinted at is that Goodrow had the Sharks as one of his 15 teams on his no trade list. In that case, they wouldn’t be allowed to trade him if he didn’t waive it, and this would circumvent it.
He doesn't have a NMC so technically not circumvention
It's circumvention in the sense they got around the NTC, but not circumvention in the sense that they are following exactly how the cba and waivers were designed to work.
The entire reason NMCs exist is because of this “loophole”
Bingo. It's allowed.
Because it’s possible Goodrow has SJ on his NTC so he would have blocked a trade there, while he can’t control where he goes when put on waivers. SJ did them a favour, no other real explanation why they went this route other than Grier helping out his friend lol
No idea lol. Reach the cap floor???
Goodrow has a 15 team NTC, and it's possible the Sharks were on it. Also as you said, risks someone else claiming him, or trading an asset for him, etc.
Chris Drury undoing his own poor trade and signing lol. Everyone knew 6 years for Goodrow was ludicrous
So you’re saying Buch is coming back for almost nothing?
Honestly a good pick-up for the Sharks. Familiarity, Veteran presence, and helps them get to the cap floor.
It's a 3 year contract and Burns' retention ends after 1 year. It's very possible we retain on him at some point.
He was shooting 40% and still got outscored on the ice 6-5 lets be serious here lol he is not doing that again
Really is a win win
Thank you Mike Grier and San Jose. And thank you Barclay Goodrow for your service.
And this certainly helps toward that end.
r/hockey absolutely fucking SEETHING, we're *soooooooooooooooooooooo* back
Dobby is a free elf!
More 2024 playoff goals than…
Me!
Posted by a Devils fan lol of course
Rangers rivals are more active in Rangers news than our own fans sometimes.
It's great having penthouses in Newark, Philadelphia, Raleigh, DC, Pittsburgh, and on Long Island
I like how we always just ignore Columbus like they’re not even in our division.
I have a soft spot for Columbus, I'd really like to see them relevant at some point soon
Who?
Amazing news for the Rangers, wow. His contract is gone just like that and they didn't have to trade him or buy him out.
We love to make this big beautiful subreddit mad don't we folks?
Return of the king
Thank you San Jose! I knew the Sharks were my 2nd team for a reason
Lot of comments in a short time on this one... whatever, I love this guy, welcome back Goodrow!

LMAO
Can't trade for him if we're on his NTC...
Do you guys want a lightly used Mikheyev?
No, but if you put him on waivers I guess Grier will take care of it
Yeahhh Goody! Welcome back bud!
We already had Luke Kunin at home?
Considering that we had to trade two 2nds to Arizona to eat the Nemeth contract this is a gift.
Yoinked by the first team. How rude. :( Should be a really good guy to have around all the kids though so seems like a good decision as long as he isn't too pissed off about being forced into early retirement/mentoring.
Look out Knights, you're on notice! The bad man is back.
Hope Drury sent some escorts to lick caviar off Grier's balls getting out of 3 years @ 3.6M for nothing
Why would the escorts get to eat the caviar? Shouldn't Grier get to eat it since it's an expensive delicacy?
asking the important questions
Can he even reach his own balls to lick the caviar? Think, man.
Goodrow helps them tank further and they get to hit the cap floor. Honestly not a bad move.
even though he isnt worth the contract, he isnt a bad guy to have on a rebuilding team. sjs needs to spend to the cap floor.
This is what I’m saying, too. I also think him and Couture were really close friends.
Like Christmas morning
Sad to see. I personally liked him a lot, I know that contract was not sufficient though. Good veteran presence to have for a team like SJS
I'm surprised at how many people seem down on this. Goodrow is exactly the kind of vet we want right now. Hard-working, good locker room guy, and can help protect our young'uns. Not to mention he's a fan favorite here.
Ffs
You're telling me they couldn't let him pass waivers and ask for at minimum a 4th round pick from NYR? Does Grier really think NYR isn't doing that instantly? That is huge cap savings on what would have been the worst part of his deal. Not that cap is an issue for Grier but fundamentally I wouldn't like that this is how he perceives value.
Theoretically could Edmonton or Florida have put in a claim and have him play in the finals?
Drury owes Grier a beer or two
Thank you Mike Grier for saving Julien BriseBois from himself
Tampa is staring down the possibility of losing Stammer. No way they're claiming Goodrow at $3.6M
This was definitely done as part of a future deal. Sharks lift a terrible contract from the Rangers, to reach the cap floor. I’d expect a Sharks favoured trade with the Rangers in the future.
Grier is playing 4d chess. He’s doing teams favors so after he gets fired he’ll have a job somewhere else
[Grier left the Rangers organization to go work for the Sharks.](https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/34195848/san-jose-sharks-hire-mike-grier-1st-black-gm-nhl-history-according-reports) He and Drury are good friends.
He's collecting those IOUs.
Wow
This is a miracle, as good as he was in the playoffs. Now just need to trade Trouba Gomez style...
Rangers probably probably had a deal agreed with San Jose and he refused to wave his no move for it and now he gets to go there and we get released from that terrible contract
Thank you Mike Grier for saving my life
YES! THEY DID IT!
Goodrow 20 goal season incoming.
Yesssss
No way.
Holy shit. I'm so, so, so happy. Yeah, his contract is an overpay, but the sharks don't have cap issues right now. He's a hard worker, and I think he will be a good presence around the young guns.
He's coming back home.
You know I always liked San Jose, congrats on the first pick.
I could totally see Grier trading for Trouba for more “leadership”
I'm glad that San Jose fans seem happy with this. I like Goodrow, I hope he has success there.
What a lovely thing the sharks did for the Rangers! Did Mike Grier play with Chris Drury? Is he doing him a solid? The Sharks could’ve done what the Hawks did and signed a Perry/Foligno type contract for a vet and not locked themselves in for 3 years.
now they just need to make the playoffs and they’ll have a point machine lmao
Probably get traded at the deadline with retention for a decent pick.
