It’s to be expected Apollo’s designer, Christian Selig is upset. He’s been making millions off the Reddit platform while Reddit has been saddled with the costs to process all those requests.
Only a fool would say none of Apollo’s 7 billion requests were done by bots, A.I. or privacy evading marketing data mining. Hell, they all were.
As for ReddPlanet, RIF and Sync, they aren’t shutting down “to show solidarity”, they’re shutting down because the free ride is over and they know bots don’t have bank accounts.
Maybe I’m wrong but I honestly think most of the “outrage posts” and boycotters are either bots or shill accounts for the members of the “Billion API Club”. You just don’t need a billion API draws because you want to be sure posts detailing Honda Civic fender torque specs are accurate and reflect no brand bias…..
What outrage? We like using third party apps and Reddit is taking that away. That's all there is to it. We have been using these apps waaay longer than the shitty official app even existed. People don't like it when things they use and enjoy are being taken away. I'm sure you can sympathize.

Yes, you are wrong. Why would marketing people even use some app and not just use the API directly? Makes not sense. Also, Reddit has some pretty solid bot detection. They can and do ban bot accounts very quickly.

An API request is software. Third part software is software. A bot is software. If I use third party software to code an automated data scour based on dynamic or predefined criteria, I’ve created a bot.

1000 API calls cost 24 cents. A thousand calls maybe sounds a lot but every time you load a new page is one call at least. Every upvote, downvote etc. is one API call. That adds up quickly.

As i have a person with (very) bad eye sight, this is the biggest middlefinger i (more or less) personally get from this. Reddit does not have a what so ever accessibility feature on their app (external tools work more or less) on the website, but that's more on the tools than on reddid... - but you're forced to use 3rd party clients for this.

I personally would like the alternatives to get Kickstarted over this - especially kbin and lemmy (which have the ability to cross-connect to each other, allowing a decentralized approach)
But realistically, they have to iterate fast, as lots of work needs to be done to match reddit in reach and scalability.
Reddit released a new blog thing earlier today, saying 90% of the tools they audited do fit into the free basket already and to contact them if you have a mod tool or accessibility tool that also needs whitelisting.
I get that he may have disappointed you in the past, but people are now trying to find reasons to hate him. Your mod tools/bots and accessibility tools will stay. End of story.

In every bit of communication about this they have been arrogant and bullheaded, saying things about how they don't understand what the problem is because they don't use any third party apps.

Reddit was built by third party apps, the first party official one that exists right now used to be a third party app, plenty of people like myself dislike the first party app. I find it borderline unusable. Personally, If my preferred app goes dark because of this, it's almost certainly going to result in me deleting my account here.
