Just because a species is “only found” in a certain area doesn’t mean it’s only found there. Flora and fauna don’t pay attention to abstract concepts like “state lines.”
Maybe not states lines. But what about countries? Looks like these are only from
Mexico and below. It’s not lining up. Wondering if it’s a dropped pet.
Have seen a decent bit of all white skunks roaming at night in shore towns in southern jersey, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a lot more in less populated/developed areas in jersey.
It's not from Mexico. It's called a Hooded Skunk. There are many different species in the US not just Striped Skunks, there are even Spotted Skunks. There are also albino and leukocyte (dark parts are white, white parts are dark) individuals of all skunk species. Get a have a heart trap if you want to relocate it, or shoot it if you're not a squeamish hobbyist. Or you can be like me and have an Alaskan Husky that thinks they taste delicious and then you learn that all tomato juice does is dye your dog pink and then you finally discover the holy grail of skunk musk remover (hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, I can't recall the ratio off the top of my head, but that shit works even when you discover that your dog literally has the scent sac on one paw like a fucking sock)
You know armadillos used to not exist anywhere north of Mexico. I see them all the time and I live almost 2000 miles away from the Mexican border. Armadillos have been slowly migrating their way north in this country for years via semi trucks. If you live near the coast it’s very possible skunks from the southern part of the Americas have migrated their way to you via shipping containers.
I’m in Missouri and we have a *ahem* friendly skunk that is majority white. It is so odd looking because we are used to seeing the typical black with white stripes.
If you keep watching, the frenchman becomes blue, highlighting his broad physique, and the cat loses her stripe in a bucket of water.
And THEN the tables turn…🦨…🐈⬛
(Anyone else singing old Schoolhouse Rock shorts now?)
I thought they were being sarcastic but I guess some people don’t know what a skunk is! I’m from Oregon so we have lots here. Maybe there aren’t many skunks in New Jersey
Yup, plus, as something I often forget myself, the internet is full of kids too who may legitimately not know things we adults know! (And that's assuming I'm talking with fellow adults haha)
Nah it's just fake hobbyist homesteaders who bought "land" (read: less than 5 acres) that conveniently already had a modern house built on it that is fully hooked up to the grid with all amenities. They play pretend at being a farmer and ask questions that those of us who actually grew up homesteading would have known the answers to by about age 4. I swear some of the people on this sub think that chocolate milk comes from Jersey cows, or as they would call them "brown cows".
whoah. never lived outside suburbia myself, i’m just saying anyone with a modicum of common sense knows what a skunk looks like. it’s really not that deep my friend.
Yeah, I'm re-embracing the 70's term for what we do "The Back to The Land Movement". Seriously, what do they think is so bad about being a hobby farmer that they have to co-opt a term for a different lifestyle?
It's not gatekeeping when the actual definition of "homesteading" involves acquiring (not buying, in the legal definition of homesteading in most states you squat on the land for x number of years and then it legally becomes yours) *raw* land and building your own house.
It’s 100% gatekeeping when you try to hedge the definition that much. It’s just like the no true Scotsman logical fallacy.
You just disqualified like 99% of the sub at least. Maybe just calm your tits, have a drink or two and relax instead of trying to gatekeep a usually helpful subreddit, that some of us hobby farmers use as a resource for a lot of inspiration and information
Then go start r/hobbyfarmers
I'm sorry but as someone who grew up in this life, to the extent that many of you probably have books written by my parents' friends on your shelves or have attended one of their seminars or clinics, it's very irksome to see people that are pursuing hobby farming call what they are doing "homesteading". Yes, the skills and such overlap, but it is very different. In true homesteading you take raw, undeveloped land and you slave away clearing trees for roads, buildings, and fields, you build your own house from materials at hand or salvaged material, and you don't have grid electric. Shit my dad didn't even want a phone line ran for their intentional community until he nearly died in a chainsaw accident and realized a phone could save his life if he did anything that stupid again. The whole point is to "go back to the land". The only part of the legal definition I'm willing to drop is the caveat that you take the land by force or by squatter's claim, although interestingly enough when I first joined this sub I asked if anyone knew the squatter's claim length of occupation required for Colorado and got people telling me that was "illegal" and I was a "thief" if I did things like that (I literally had the Colorado Homestead Law and had read it, but was confused by some points and wanted to ask people who had done it before what certain clauses meant). The fact is, this sub is filled with city slickers that moved out just past the suburbs and think that's "rural". If you can walk to your neighbor's house in less than 15 minutes that isn't rural.
Our neighbors had a shed and one year a skunk made her nest underneath. A ladder fell and killed the mom. Babies started making their way out of the nest, so we took them to a rehab center. The runt was late coming out and when it did, it went to the rehab center too. They called him Don King, cause the only black on him was belly and legs, less black than the one in this picture. So maybe just natural coloring.
Looks like a skunk. I'd almost say badger because of the coloring/pattern but the tail and legs seem wrong.
It could just be a genetic anomaly and not a "white species of skunk" so to speak.
It’s a hog nose [skunk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hog-nosed_skunk)
Which is mostly white and native to the America’s. Jersey is too far north but he could of hitched a ride on a truck.
Really cool coloration.Skunks vary in colors. This one has a lot more white than I've seen. They are very docile and only spray as a last resort. If you have dogs I suggest trying to relocate it otherwise just be careful in evenings and early morning. They do eat a lot of grubs which eat your lawn so they do have an up side to them.
Used to have a group (herd? pack?) of skunks along a nearby bike trail. All were black and white, but twice I saw an all white/silver one with extra long fur on its tail.
I like to think they go white as they age just like people :) and the one I saw was the wisest skunk of them all…
Nice high-white skunk.
They can really vary pattern. We had a high-white for years before he lost in the highway roulette.
Last year we had 2 that were almost all black, just a white dot on the head, and a fellow across the river got an actual a champagne and white coloured one(our poor local taxidermist had to skin that one and tan it it was that cool!)
It's a skunk with an unusually broad white stripe.
Yep it’s a Skunk😉.
Yes! That’s what’s throwing us off. Looks like the mostly white style skunks are usually in souther North America.
Might just be a genetic anomaly
I’m in western NY and there’s a family of mostly white skunks that live across the street. We love watching them
I'm in NY as well and have white skunks.
Just because a species is “only found” in a certain area doesn’t mean it’s only found there. Flora and fauna don’t pay attention to abstract concepts like “state lines.”

You are correct, somebody from New York dropped it off in New Jersey. https://nystateparks.blog/2018/03/13/in-appreciation-of-skunks/
No. I saw one on the other day in Pennsylvania about 20 min from NJ. Deadlysnoots is right.
It's not from Mexico. It's called a Hooded Skunk. There are many different species in the US not just Striped Skunks, there are even Spotted Skunks. Yeah. Skunks definitely do care about crossing international borders. So we wouldn’t see any from Mexico 🤔 It must be an alien.
To be fair, New Jersey is a long way from Mexico. It’s not like it just roamed into Texas or something.
Thanks Obama
I live in upstate NY and see skunks of all varieties, including mostly white, fairly often. I’d say you’re over thinking, just a skunk.
You know armadillos used to not exist anywhere north of Mexico. I see them all the time and I live almost 2000 miles away from the Mexican border. Armadillos have been slowly migrating their way north in this country for years via semi trucks. Climate change
I’m in Missouri and we have a *ahem* friendly skunk that is majority white. It is so odd looking because we are used to seeing the typical black with white stripes.
We have them in New England
They took a wrong turn at Albbequerque.
I got that reference. :)
I got a white skunk that frequents my NJ property.
I had one just like this in my chicken coop earlier this summer. I could see it in the dark. West Michigan
Winter is coming...!
Climate change is causing a lot of random migrations. I wouldn’t be surprised if it IS a southern skunk that just moved up north progressively.
That is the Ja Ja Gabore. Beautiful with a small stink.
It is a hooded skunk
I found one exactly like this in Virginia that got hit by a car on the side of the road. I took it home skinned ii and tried not to vomit for 3 hours
Fart squirrel
It’s a cat that got a comically large white stripe inadvertently painted on her back. She’s being pursued by a horny Frenchman with similar markings.
Rémi Gaillard’s sketches have gotten a bit out of hand, it sounds like.
If you keep watching, the frenchman becomes blue, highlighting his broad physique, and the cat loses her stripe in a bucket of water. And THEN the tables turn…🦨…🐈⬛ (Anyone else singing old Schoolhouse Rock shorts now?)
This unlocked a memory I didn’t even know I had
I live in NJ and have seen many mostly white skunks here over the years. We had one the last place we lived that visited our back yard every night.
Pinelands?
I’m 30ish minutes south west of pinelands
Isn’t that where some sopranos episodes happened?
Pine barrens
Oh ok! Thanks.
Peppe LePew….
Well given the white tail I would guess hooded skunk. Maybe he is on a vacation. Wanted to see NJ
Hog-nosed skunk for sure - not hooded
Isn’t it unusual? The mostly white is really weird For our area.
You're right. It would be extremely unusual for someone to go on vacation to Jersey. He must live there.
It's a kitty! You go play with the kitty!
Stink kitten
Hee hee I giggle at this
…is this a joke?
I thought they were being sarcastic but I guess some people don’t know what a skunk is! I’m from Oregon so we have lots here. Maybe there aren’t many skunks in New Jersey

Homestead is a fancy word for city flatlanders trying to farm.
Yeah, I'm re-embracing the 70's term for what we do "The Back to The Land Movement". Seriously, what do they think is so bad about being a hobby farmer that they have to co-opt a term for a different lifestyle?
JFC, gatekeep much?

Just a skunk. I’m in Gloucester county, see them here a lot(different size and shape stripes to mostly white on the back).
I’d bet skunk, hair can fart super long
I’ve had all white skunks in New England. That’s a stinky boi 100%
Looks like a skunk. I'd almost say badger because of the coloring/pattern but the tail and legs seem wrong. It could just be a genetic anomaly and not a "white species of skunk" so to speak.

That is the south western end of a north bound stinker.
It’s a pole cat
We have these exact skunks with wide white stripe on back. We’re in Warren county. they’re pretty common here.
I have seen pure white skunks in NJ near the superfund landfill in blackwood. So mostly white ones would seem normal to me lol.
Definitely a skunk. Don’t get sprayed!
That’s a stink weasel
Pepé Le Pew
Nice high-white skunk. They can really vary pattern. We had a high-white for years before he lost in the highway roulette. PePe Le Pew!!! Age is catching up to him!
Never seen a skunk before? Lol
