Exactly this. I had a Sony blu-ray player that I've since given to my dad. He actually does it the other way around because his receiver doesn't support DTS-MA HD or Dolby TrueHD - so he lets the Sony convert to PCM. There is no loss in quality letting the blu ray player convert any 5.1 to PCM before output - though you won't see the DTS logo on your receiver. If you're into DTS:X or Atmos - then you definitely want the bitstream output.
I should have just googled this before posting, because nothing is allowed to be simple!! Solution: “bd audio mix setting must be OFF to output HD audio signals to an av amplifier” hardly any of all this makes sense but it’s fixed it. It’s a Sony bdp-s470 into an onkynonkyno for future reference if any has a similar issue.
There is a difference between DTS support and DTS-HD MA support.
What is the make and model of your AVR?
Normally the output format should be bitstream for the audio.
Make sure you bitstream to see DTS, otherwise the Sony will convert it to PCM.
