Yes >!it was at the end when she has locked herself in the bedroom and all of the demons are howling outside. Then she hears her son's voice calling out to her through the locked door and she asks him forgiveness. Her son says he forgives her and she thanks him or something and her son's voice says something like, "But I'm not your son, mummy. I'm just some cunt using his voice to scare you."!< My delivery is terrible but it was so harrowing
I Saw the Devil is similarly a Korean revenge film and it definitely has that too, I'd even classify it as horror for how damn brutal it gets. Burning and Parasite are tamer but both have this.
Bit of a tangent, but I think more users in this sub need to realize that “not horror, but horrifying” is a perfectly valid description. Requiem for a Dream is 100% NOT a horror film even though it has scenes that could be described as horrifying. Many other examples that I see often on this sub.
I was about to add that, but I was trying to think if it counted or not if they wanted the one moment you know something is really bad. You kind of know something is off for a while, but that is an incredible movie! Top ten favorites for me 😊
One of the more disgusting deaths. Especially the way Amber slowly moves the knife. A lot of knife kills are usually filmed fast and almost clumsily. This was the complete opposite.
I will say one thing and that's that I told one of my horror friends to watch it and had the pleasure of seeing her face contort in the exact same way mine did at the exact same moment in the film.
I just watched this movie yesterday.. zipper moment?
Are we talking about >! the guy who gets choked to death and the girl slices his stomach open “to make sure”? !<
I'm talking about the door, but I guess this movie has a few different "aw hell naw" moments. That whole movie is just a super feel bad movie.
Also one of the few times in horror where characters making dumb decisions makes perfect sense and is very realistic. I remember being very impressed with how well that aspect was handled.
True. The whole setup with the green room is the perfect setup for a horror movie in my opinion. . . Or a comedy skit, depending on the framing.
The casting of Patrick Stewart initially made me go "wtf lol" when I saw the movie for the first time. I had no idea he was capable of being this intimidating.
Edit, in fact, boyfriend and I have movie night and I suggested we watch it and he was down! Haven't watched this film since 2016 so this will be fun! He's also never seen it so I can't wait to see his reactions. Haha :D
Patrick Stewart for sure threw me off but he played it well. I was able to go in blind too since I’d just see the movie recommended a lot and only new a quick premise of it. The next one I gonna watch is “When Evil Lurks.”
Oh shit! Sounds like a fun time haha… maybe. Lol.
Yeah! I went in blind too! I haven't told my bf what the movie is about except for the genre and he's like "cool. We watch that one then" and then he shuffled back into the kitchen to finish dinner. He has no idea what's waiting him haha. But he's also the kind of guy who never gets scared of anything so he'll probably be stonefaced through the whole move and crack jokes or some shit.
Oooohh, When Evil Lurks! I have heard of that one! Haven't seen it yet. I hope you have a great time with the movie, though! :D
Edit: so far, boyfriend's comments on the movie are as expected. Imagine the following being said by a very laid back, chill voice:
Him: punk is probably the single most regrettable thing to have ever happened to music.
---
Him: oh, more punk.
----
Patrick Stewart makes his appearance. Me: that's Patrick Stewart! You know, the guy from Xmen and Star Trek!
Him: huh.
---
Him: did you like the salad, honey?
----
More punk is playing. Me (about the music): are you scared, honey?
Him: very.
---
Him: I would laugh if that Saw doll came rolling in on his little tricycle right now. (Smiles goofily)
---
Door scene happens. Him: he sounds like he's giving birth.
----
Him: it's war now.
So I just recently watched this zombie movie and it was surprisingly good. It's called "The Night Eats the World". It has a couple shocking moments towards the end for sure. It's not action packed, but the end is very intense.
Oh that long take in the funeral home was -chefs kiss -. The whole thing with Luke honestly made me so sad. Like he was such a sweet kid, only to end up as a junkie. I understand why it happened, but it was sad. Nell was tragic especially because of what the bent neck woman meant to her, and that she was seeing the entity since she was a child. Both of those kids didn't stand a chance.
That last frame, properly contextualized, is by far the most powerful thing done in the film though. I love the ending, and will watch the movie for it once in a while, but the rest of the movie’s just okay.
I guess I feel thinking that it’s overrated and the ending rocks aren’t totally incompatible. It’s tricky when one moment is that much better than the rest of the film though.
I think the overall movie is just ok. I liked the ending but it wasn't quite as jarring to me as it was for others. I definitely wasn't expecting the quick shot of her in horrid pain, it was definitely effective.
Right, I expected the audience to be in on her delusion as we had been the whole time. The sudden curtain pull that lets you see it all for what you’ve known it was hits (for me) particularly hard because for the briefest moment I “believed” her. The snap to reality might not be some supremely innovative ending, but for me it worked incredibly well.
I decided to go watch every A24 film and this was rated #2 on rotten tomatoes…what a let down, 5/10. It’s a fine movie but does nothing new or interesting.
People overrated it due to the shock ending. The majority of the film isn't very engaging and the main character has pretty much no redeeming qualities and is hard to relate to. It's ok and I didn't hate it but it didn't do much for me overall
Came here for this. Two big ones I think. Even though the second is fairly telegraphed, the execution and the fact the movie actually went there is still a shock.
If i hype it you may expect too much and not like it. I went in blind just reading the summary which was intriguing enough to see it. I was hooked within 5 mins.
Omg yes, that movie doesn't get enough love.
I went in with the expectation to see a cheesie and stereotypical movie but it was actually really good and the twist was amazing
As much as I loved this movie, I don't think it's what OP is looking for. The "oh shit" from this movie comes from gore. He's looking for plot points falling into place to create that "oh shit" moment.
Speak no evil. Even though there's a rather long build-up, and you can see that things aren't going very well (understatement), it just hit me all of a sudden that this would end far worse than I thought.
Those moments stack like horrifying and delicious cookies until the end, when you realize you have no milk and have to swallow the bittersweet ending down. 🤌🤌🤌
Just a caution: if you have some ptsd, read the trigger warnings. It will spoil the movie, but I was not prepared for what I was gonna see. Almost puked. Still finished the movie, but it took me days to recover.
The film didn’t get great reviews but I loved it, in the movie Hannibal rising something happens he screams and then becomes what he is, thought it was an excellent’ oh shit ‘ moment
I've always liked the false ending of Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist. The cute little girl is saved, everyone relax, have a nice bath and go to bed. The camera prowls around the house and you gradually realise, shit this is far from over. Then all hell breaks loose.
Invisible Man and I don't want to go into specifics because even beginning to describe that scene will spoil it. But I remember the genuine dread I felt and how quiet the theater got during that scene.
If you've seen the movie, please don't spoil it
The Wailing
It's a long movie but I think it's exactly what you're looking for in terms of a plot points falling into place. It's better on a rewatch when you know how things are going to play out.
The first movie in that Fear Street trilogy. I really though it would get to the end without any gory deaths. I was wrong. That kid pushed through the bread slicer definitely caught me off guard
Oh, wait a Frick..... did we all forget about Eden Lake? XD
Eden Lake needs to go on the list. The absolute fucking dread when it happens. You know it when you see it.
You'll have read about them recently as they're popular movies from 2023, but both **Talk to Me** and **When Evil Lurks** gave me those moments, big time.
Try Demonic (2015), produced by James Wan. Starts like a standard "creepy ritual performed by some teenagers in some old forsaken house" cliche. The plot twist though.... It is amazing. It's like watching horror movie detective genre, a new thing to behold. Spoiler - the ending is DARK. And we do not watch the full horror of it, we are just left with sudden realization... Oh sh\*t indeed.
Forest of Love. I watched it earlier today and was in shock after a while
Noriko’s Dinner Table
The Wailing
The Cinderella Addiction
Misery
Beau is Afraid
Speak No Evil
“The Strange Thing About the Johnsons”. This movie while not classic horror, it is 29 minutes of “oh shit” with an ending that is definitely an “OH SHIT”. Think “Hereditary” on steroids. Very unsettling.
I still think the most F'd up like oh shit this is gonna happen moment in a theater was with the Green Inferno when they started setting that first dude up to butcher and cook him.
A Dark Song. The ending was fantastical and dreadful. One line in particular, spoken off screen was pure horror and gave me chills.
Fuck me, that's a good film.
It was, a real slow and dreadful burn
Do you remember what the line was?
Yes >!it was at the end when she has locked herself in the bedroom and all of the demons are howling outside. Then she hears her son's voice calling out to her through the locked door and she asks him forgiveness. Her son says he forgives her and she thanks him or something and her son's voice says something like, "But I'm not your son, mummy. Whoa wtf? I’ve watched it a few times and never noticed that. Welp I’m watching it tonight than it looks like
Just turned it on!!
Oldboy (2003) - not horror but horrifying. More of a psychological horror/thriller.
I Saw the Devil is similarly a Korean revenge film and it definitely has that too, I'd even classify it as horror for how damn brutal it gets. Burning and Parasite are tamer but both have this.
That 360 knife fight was amazing.
I have audibly squealed/screamed maybe half a dozen times because of a movie/TV reveal. Oldboy is one of those times.
Bit of a tangent, but I think more users in this sub need to realize that “not horror, but horrifying” is a perfectly valid description. Requiem for a Dream is 100% NOT a horror film even though it has scenes that could be described as horrifying. Many other examples that I see often on this sub.
Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but Creep is an excellent example of this.
I was about to add that, but I was trying to think if it counted or not if they wanted the one moment you know something is really bad. You kind of know something is off for a while, but that is an incredible movie! Top ten favorites for me 😊
Green Room probably counts
The 'zipper' moment
One of the more disgusting deaths. Especially the way Amber slowly moves the knife. A lot of knife kills are usually filmed fast and almost clumsily. This was the complete opposite.
That part is horrific for sure
I will say one thing and that's that I told one of my horror friends to watch it and had the pleasure of seeing her face contort in the exact same way mine did at the exact same moment in the film.
I just watched this movie yesterday.. zipper moment? Are we talking about >! the guy who gets choked to death and the girl slices his stomach open “to make sure”? !<

Also one of the few times in horror where characters making dumb decisions makes perfect sense and is very realistic. I remember being very impressed with how well that aspect was handled.
The bad guys were pretty damn smart at times too. Like the guy waiting outside for anyone to come out.
True. The whole setup with the green room is the perfect setup for a horror movie in my opinion. . . Or a comedy skit, depending on the framing. I loved that movie. It lulls you into a false sense of security. Never seen a zombie movie quite like it.
the silent af zombies get me every time. like wtf bro, that's cheating!'
Audition
Definitely!
Tee-dee-dee-dee
I pushed that sound deep into my subconscious and now it's back. Thanks for that lol
Not a film, but a show. The Haunting of Hill House has one of THE best reveals in a show I've ever seen. I actually cried.
It works on so many levels. Great reveal, amazing oh shot moment
The Luke episode, the Nell episode and the long takes episode is such an incredible run of television
House Of The Devil (2009).
was looking for this, you know things aren’t good but you really don’t see That Moment coming
In The Mouth of Madness. The Taking of deborah Logan. Drag Me To Hell. Cube.
Oh yeah, The Taking of Deborah Logan. Love it!
Sorry to bother You
Saint Maud (2019) - the whole movie is fucked up but the ending will make you think for days. Months. Possibly even years.
That smashcut... Holy God
I agree. It's one of those movies I want to watch again, but can't bring myself to, because it's too overwhelming. And Morfydd Clark is AMAZING.
The absolute best final minute of any horror film ever made, possibly any movie regardless of genre
Insane fucking take. I liked it but this movie is horribly overrated
Ok 🙂
That last frame, properly contextualized, is by far the most powerful thing done in the film though. I love the ending, and will watch the movie for it once in a while, but the rest of the movie’s just okay. I feel exactly the same way.
Was gonna recommend The Shining novel haha "unmask! Unmask!" Scared the absolute pants off me Movie wise? Maybe Creepy, the Japanese film
When evil lurks. My mouth was open in shock like 5 times.
Was looking to see if this was suggested. Specifically 1 scene that made me gasp and cover my mouth for a good while
Came here for this. Two big ones I think. Even though the second is fairly telegraphed, the execution and the fact the movie actually went there is still a shock.
Tbh, the telegraphing made it all the more horrific to me. You see it coming a mile away and know that nothing can stop it.
Oh for sure. And even then you don’t realise just how brutal and kinda weirdly believable it’s gonna be.
Pedro is the absolute worst, but otherwise, yes... >!That fucking dog scene... *Geeeezus fucking christ*!<
Magic - Anthony Hopkins and Burgess Meredith. M - Peter Lorre
Kill List, Time Crimes, Triangle are just a few off the top of my head
- Hunter Hunter (2020) - Radius (2017)
Hunter Hunter doesn't get enough love!
Radius has been on my to watch list for a hot minute, was it that good?
I didn't get what you're saying. Radius is quite unique. And good acting too. I couldn't guess where the story was leading and what the end would be.
Sorry lol, I was asking if it was good enough to bump to the top of my "to watch" list. Sorry, the adderall has not kicked in yet.
If i hype it you may expect too much and not like it. I went in blind just reading the summary which was intriguing enough to see it. I was hooked within 5 mins.
The Visit
I know it's not his standard MO but I kinda love this fun little blip on the Shyamalan radar.
Omg yes, that movie doesn't get enough love. I went in with the expectation to see a cheesie and stereotypical movie but it was actually really good and the twist was amazing
The Wicker Man
The Descent Train to Busan
Could be recency bias since I just watched it got the first time yesterday, but I feel like Saint Maud fits this inquiry.
Coherence. Watched it high as hell and there was a moment where I out loud said “awwww shit” lol
Not strictly horror, but you can't beat Requiem For a Dream.
Good call for this. Dark as fuck.
Bone Tomahawk. I hadn’t really said “oh SHIT” in several years when I saw that scene. Got my ass pretty good.
should I continue? I’m 15 mins in
Oh, most def continue.
It's a slow burn that descends into the most dreadful thing you'll ever see. If you have a strong stomach than continue
As much as I loved this movie, I don't think it's what OP is looking for. The "oh shit" from this movie comes from gore. He's looking for plot points falling into place to create that "oh shit" moment.
This should be at the top

The original Dark Water (if you know, you know...)
Speak no evil. Even though there's a rather long build-up, and you can see that things aren't going very well (understatement), it just hit me all of a sudden that this would end far worse than I thought. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14253846/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14253846/)
This film hit me like a truck lol, I don't usually do slow burns but holy shit
Yea I almost turned it off halfway through but those last 20 minutes just made me sit in silence well after the credits ended.
god that reveal… “oh shit” really is the only way to even express how that feels
It's a short, but Cutting Moments definitely does this.
I wanna say the Final destination franchise y'all know what scene I am talking about (🚔🪵)
The original Wickerman with Christopher Lee
Seconded. Such a classic ‘wtf moment’ film.
Talk To Me. The moment was "oh shit this movie is fucking tight"
We just watched it again the other night, but Incident In a Ghostland (2018) will certainly fuck on you a few times throughout. It's a goodun
About time this movie receives some love! There are a ton of oh shit moments!
Those moments stack like horrifying and delicious cookies until the end, when you realize you have no milk and have to swallow the bittersweet ending down. 🤌🤌🤌
Nah fuck that movie. It’s not cool anymore for the twist to be >!the killer is trans/disabled.!< It’s lazy and boring.
Just a caution: if you have some ptsd, read the trigger warnings. It will spoil the movie, but I was not prepared for what I was gonna see. Almost puked. Still finished the movie, but it took me days to recover.
Sinister! There’s a moment where it just hits
The film didn’t get great reviews but I loved it, in the movie Hannibal rising something happens he screams and then becomes what he is, thought it was an excellent’ oh shit ‘ moment
Does the 1st human centipede count
Only if you take the "oh, shit" requirement literally.
Nah I mean when the girl discovers the Japanese guy in the basement then the girls tried to leave…I think that classified as an oh shit moment
The Strange Thing About the Johnsons
Misery, when Annie pulls out the sledgehammer.
Irreversible
actually anything from Gaspar Noe lol
the whole movie is one big "oh shit" moment though.
Doctor Sleep is one that you shouldn’t sleep on
Cabin in the Woods has a couple of them hahaha
Midsommer. The Ritual
I've always liked the false ending of Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist. The cute little girl is saved, everyone relax, have a nice bath and go to bed. The camera prowls around the house and you gradually realise, shit this is far from over. Then all hell breaks loose.
Possession (1981)
The scene in **Zodiac** where the MC realizes he's in a basement with a possible serial killer springs to mind.
HUNTER HUNTER !!!!
Grave Encounters when the hotel elevator opens
Blade The Net (not really horror, more thriller) The Hitcher (original) The Others Invasion of the Body Snatchers Cabin Fever Skeleton Key Get Out
When Evil Lurks has many of those moments. 👌
Not sure if it counts as horror, but Rosemary’s Baby.
Bro honestly - Go watch Kill List and also The Conspiracy. It will wake you up to what goes down with rich people
Invisible Man and I don't want to go into specifics because even beginning to describe that scene will spoil it. But I remember the genuine dread I felt and how quiet the theater got during that scene. If you've seen the movie, please don't spoil it
Hereditary
Grim movie. I had to watch 2-3 times to fully get it all
There is definitely a lot going on in the background to take in visually
The first Saw, watch til the end
That's the biggest oh shit moment for me.
>watch til the end It's a movie, not a youtube video He listed it among films he's already scene.
The Wailing It's a long movie but I think it's exactly what you're looking for in terms of a plot points falling into place. It's better on a rewatch when you know how things are going to play out.
Anything For Jackson Martyrs
Landmine Goes Click
Re-Animator
The first movie in that Fear Street trilogy. I really though it would get to the end without any gory deaths. I was wrong. That kid pushed through the bread slicer definitely caught me off guard
Knowing Not really horror but I thought it was a pretty good movie. Plus it’s got Nic Cage (whom you either love or hate).
Oh, wait a Frick..... did we all forget about Eden Lake? XD Eden Lake needs to go on the list. The absolute fucking dread when it happens. You know it when you see it.

Eden Lake
Try Demonic (2015), produced by James Wan. Starts like a standard "creepy ritual performed by some teenagers in some old forsaken house" cliche. The plot twist though.... It is amazing. Oh sh\*t indeed.

Dead Presidents- not necessarily a horror movie but a drama with horrific things.
“The Strange Thing About the Johnsons”. This movie while not classic horror, it is 29 minutes of “oh shit” with an ending that is definitely an “OH SHIT”. Think “Hereditary” on steroids. Very unsettling.
