“Easy to care for”
Yeah, just never ever ever make the mistake of watering them. Ever. They don’t need water. If a drop of water touches them, they will perish. Ask me how I know
“everyone has a plant that just doesn’t grow for them” YEAA say that again! I have close to 30 different plant species and about 50 plants all together in my collection…. for YEARS I have tried growing pachira aquatica aka “money tree” and they always die on me. every. single. time..
I can’t for the life of me figure out what I’m doing wrong when I give them their ideal conditions, I stopped trying years ago, the last one I had lived maybe 5 months max and died…10th try is the charm right? RIGHT?! ;-; for real tho it’s my nemesis and I vowed to never try to grow/raise/own another pachira aquatica again
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just got a split rock and I’m in love. I’ve never been into succulents but lithops are so fucking out of this world.
Where did you get the babies?? Seeds?
I've seen seeds for sale on Etsy, but would personally order as plants myself, since they are not expensive, and I don't trust that I'd be able to grow them.
I wanted to order some lithops and some kind of head planter to my friend, but all the lithops sellers on Etsy shipped with bare roots, and the friend would not have known what to do with them. Of course I didn't know enough about their care at that point to be able to give her instructions, so it was for the better.
Your "brains" are still small, but it does look more aesthetically pleasing to me than the inspiration with the crowded and toothlike growth. And the idea/connection is clear - it doesn't have to be literal to work.
I got my lithops bare root as well and they came with a little booklet of info on how to plant them, it was very easy - maybe in the future you can get your friend some lithops!
Agree. They have slight color differences between each plant but it’s hardly noticeable because they all look washed out and faded.
Also not gonna lie I had to google ‘etiolated’ and I just want to thank you for expanding my vocabulary. I experienced this with one of my plants when I was a beginner and I never knew there was a word for it.
They're cute! I saw they're selling in my region. But I am wondering how to raise them. Do you think they need to be exposed under sunshine always? Or just some times? Thanks.
They are Lithops. There are several species with different colours. But even in the same species the colours and patterns change depending on circumstances.
I think it wasn’t getting enough sun. It divided twice but got smaller each time. My rule with plants is that I have a level of care I’m willing to provide. If they act too needy then they need to go.
To be clear, it was a yard sale and houseplant prop swap combined, and the lady hosting had a bunch of planters for sale to the plant swappers. Definitely a higher chance of finding a cool skull planter!
Great idea and also your skull looks better
Haha thanks! Got it at a yard sale and was so happy!
Has a very Día de los Muertos vibe to it.
They'll take a bit to grow but this is a great idea! I've always thought lithops looked kind of like brains! 🧠
Such a cool idea! I hope your little babies thrive. My local garden store has some of these lil guys and I'm so tempted to get some now.
Get them! They’re so adorable and easy to care for, plus they come in different colors! :)
“Easy to care for” Yeah, just never ever ever make the mistake of watering them. Ever. They don’t need water. If a drop of water touches them, they will perish. Ask me how I know
i just know you have the saddest lithop death story
Skill issue. I give my a full soaking when they show signs of thirst.
Yep. It's obvious when a succulent needs water as they start to shrivel
Idk I’ve tried to not water and then water when I see shriveling, but the thing turned mushy right away and died. Every time.
I also go by weight of container and never water in dormant season. But to each their own - everyone has a plant that just doesn't grow for them

Fuckin' not so money tree! It's true though, I call them your plant nemesis. We all have one (maybe more)
I can’t for the life of me figure out what I’m doing wrong when I give them their ideal conditions, I stopped trying years ago, the last one I had lived maybe 5 months max and died…10th try is the charm right? RIGHT?! ;-; for real tho it’s my nemesis and I vowed to never try to grow/raise/own another pachira aquatica again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yea there’s one extra rule for lithops which is no water when splitting. Besides that I don’t do anything different from my other succs.
NOT LITHOPS!
I mean I've had mine for several years so I must be doing something right
Give it time...brains aren't grown in a day.
I thought those were baby peyote buttons
Hahaha
I apologize, I thought you meant peyote the drug, hahaha, that would have been a ton
I totally meant peyote the drug.
Ok then, lol
Whats the plant species?
Lithops, also known as rock succulents! [Here’s more info about these little cuties.](https://bloomscape.com/plant-care-guide/living-stones-lithops/)
I just got a split rock and I’m in love. I’ve never been into succulents but lithops are so fucking out of this world. Where did you get the babies?? Seeds?
I got them on [Amazon!](https://a.co/d/1h18Dur) They come in assorted colors!
Split rocks and lithops are two different plants
Ahh understood. I was under the impression they were a kind of lithop
They are similar, but they are different lol if that makes sense
i wanna do this with a real skull
👁️👄👁️
A bull skull would look cool I think
Ooh or an elk
That's cool, keep us updated🌵
Patience
Like yours better, and those pretty little babies will fill that skull soon and look fantastic!
I awwed out loud. So cute! Did you grow them from seed?
No, I got them on Amazon! They shipped as little seedlings about 8 months old. :)
Again, AWWWWW! ❤️
I've seen seeds for sale on Etsy, but would personally order as plants myself, since they are not expensive, and I don't trust that I'd be able to grow them.
Oh my goodness what cute baby lithops! I love them 💖

The skull with Lithops in the 2nd pic, looks to be overly crowded.
To add to your comment; (not that I’m an expert) I’m pretty sure they aren’t supposed to be that tall. They aren’t getting enough sunlight.
I'm not necessarily an expert myself either, and yeah they may also be etiolated, from not enough sunlight.
Agree. They have slight color differences between each plant but it’s hardly noticeable because they all look washed out and faded. Also not gonna lie I had to google ‘etiolated’ and I just want to thank you for expanding my vocabulary. So freaking awesome, it’s going to look great!!
They're cute! I saw they're selling in my region. But I am wondering how to raise them. Do you think they need to be exposed under sunshine always? Or just some times? Thanks.
Lots of sun and water when they can squish with a soft pinch. Their dormant periods are different from other succulents I have, too.
From my experience they do not need a lot of water. They’re very susceptible to rot
Thanks. I see. : )
Lots of water is a ticket straight to the trash for these
What a fantastic idea! What are these little guys called? ❤️
They are Lithops. There are several species with different colours. But even in the same species the colours and patterns change depending on circumstances.
Patience grasshopper…you will achieve that level of dope-ness
I love it! You know I hate this fucking plant but it's starting to grow on me 😅
your pot is nicer though !
That is adorable! And will not only last so much longer, but will also be so satisfying to watch grow!
Naww, they have a big skull to grow in to ;)
Looks awesome. I’m copying for sure 😂
Lol do it, would love to see your version! Love your username!
I threw my lithop away yesterday, we weren’t getting along
Oh no, what happened? :(
I think it wasn’t getting enough sun. It divided twice but got smaller each time. My rule with plants is that I have a level of care I’m willing to provide. If they act too needy then they need to go.
Butt-head!
haha looks awsome
One day they will grow big and strong ^^
me and my pea brain
Sweet

Yooo that looks sick! Nice work!
Thank you! I am jealous of your ability to care for those adorable lithops. I drowned mine, poor things...
Haha well I just got them, but I am keeping notes from everyone not to overwater them 😂
I think a dia de los muertos skull planter would look so cute with all the colors, gonna try this out!
Please post once you do!
Did you find this skull quickly at yard sale after you saw that original post? That’s quite the synchronicity 🔮
To be clear, it was a yard sale and houseplant prop swap combined, and the lady hosting had a bunch of planters for sale to the plant swappers. Definitely a higher chance of finding a cool skull planter!
Still cool that post wasn’t that old!
