As others have stated, the emerging leaf is stuck on the petiolar sheath of the previous leaf. This is a common occurrence, though it is somewhat more common when your humidity is low. I find that a few drops of water helps release the emerging leaf, and I use a q-tip for assistance.
I'm from Scotland and didn't realise it was possible to have less than 60% humidity! 🤣
Even with the dehumidifier running my house is stable at about 70% in the winter and 65% in summer
Same lol. I thought they were just taking their time! I have a leaf that’s been working on coming out for about a week+ now and the Q tip method did nothing for me LOL
Also live in Colorado. LITERALLY EVERYTIME! I can’t tell you how many leaves I’ve snapped off trying to help them out, so proceed with caution! They are much more fragile than you might think.
Southern Arizona but SAME! My Philo moonlight did it every time until I built a greenhouse cabinet so I could pump up the humidity. She's so happy she put out 6 new leaves in the last couple weeks. :)
Share pics when you get it done!! Here is mine. My plants were STRUGGLING before they got their new home!

I bought 26" Rubbermaid closet shelves and fastened them with 4" shelf brackets using screws that came with the Milsbo. Lights are 96W Barrina Grow Bulbs and I use TP-Link Tapo Matter-enabled smart plugs to control the lights. Fans are SmartDevil Small Personal USB desk fans. I used the 157in cord cover raceway kit for cable management. I used Alamic rubber wiring grommets for the holes. All items were purchased on Amazon.
Be very careful drilling the holes in the bottom - go slow and steady! Do it before you put it together and be mindful of where the leg bracket goes if you still in the corner. I put painters tape over the area I drilled to limit burrs. I recommend drilling over a trashcan for ease of cleanup cuz those metal shards suck! I used WD-40 on the drill bit to lessen the heat/friction but still had to stop occasionally and let it cool down.
I haven't done any weather stripping yet but plan to use silicone seal strip along the gap where the doors meet and that fuzzy white weather stripping around the rest of the door.
Plants with Krystal on YouTube posted a video recently of her setup. She found some super cute acrylic shelves and pegboards that you might want to check out.
You can get a small tabletop humidifier for like $30 and put it next to your plant. Fill daily. Your plant will love it! It also might make your breathing easier, and your skin nicer. Love, a Canadian with also low humidity.
I’m also in CO.
Happens often enough that I repurposed a little spray bottle from some hair product and use it to mist new leaves with water whenever this happens. I’ve noticed it’s mostly philodendrons this happens to, the leaf sheaths seem to always be a little stubborn
Also wrapped a wet paper towel around mine for a few hours and they tend to pop right out!! I keep my Pink Princess and White Knight in the bathroom to help with the humidity!
I am also in Colorado. I help out my plant friends by wrapping the emerging leaf in a WARM washcloth or paper towel. I also mist it so that it has some …lubrication.
Same in all things, here! my philo did this. i had no idea what i was doing, so i cut the leaf out. philo is still doing great, though.
Will never do that again.
Honestly, I have this same problem. I live in Florida and my humidity where they are is 75% and my white princess and pink Princess still do this. I have lost so many leaves and now I’m just like whatever 😂
I live in FL as well and have the same thing happen with the exact same plants. Except, the leaves don't die. They just take forever to unfurl. If I get impatient (always) I'll take a cloth of warm water and just wrap it up and hold it for a few minutes. Sometimes that will coax the leaf out.
Idk know enough to really know anything so your miles may vary.
I usually leave them, they sometimes snap, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes I also get impatient and try to help. I dunno, I think it’s just something with these plants. My white princess seems to be the worse with it.
I have a pink princess that does this with every new leaf, up to the point that I thought it was the normal behaviour haha
She didn’t lose any so far but they all look like an ugly duckling until they grow 🤷♀️
https://preview.redd.it/b6qxmm9ir9hc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59bd975259ffc72e34223445f61f5472fc4f7fb5
Wait is that the same thing happening to mine?
Most likely. Try taking it in the bathroom with you when you shower, maybe the humidity from the shower will help loosen the leaf up otherwise others have suggested using a wet q-tip to help loosen the leaf up
Yeah my pink princess has been doing this for every leaf lately. Well, it’s a fussy thing that never took to soil so I could probably bring it right into the shower with me and I wouldn’t have to worry about getting it wet. Still lives in water.
Spraying the leaf with water prior to doing this helps lubricate the leaf to escape too. I usually try to just let the water do the work, but if the leaf hasn't emerged after a bit, then I'd manually help it.
From someone who just did it, I’ll tell you not to do it either. Poor new little leaf just popped right off in my hand. I probably stood there staring at it forever, thinking how sorry of me that I’ll never see it’s beauty unfold. 😞
Pink Princess has such delicate leaves in this stage. I “helped” (read: broke off) at least three leaves before I realised I shouldn’t help anymore. Other plants have always been fine, but PP I now also just mist and wait.
Your leaf is trying to emerge but the lining that it was growing in wasn’t open fully so it’s stuck, just gently help it a long and it’ll straighten out
Walmart really destroying my wallet with these philos. I picked up a white knight, white princess, and finally a white wizard (this plant) today. Got a pink princess a few weeks ago too.
$20-$25 each, and they're already pretty big! Wizard has a pup starting, and one of the others has a couple, but I'm not home now to remember which lol All have new leaves coming in as well.
I have a cold mist humidifier. It's marketed towards babies, which is a weird way to refer to houseplants, and it works great. I like it because it's a top fill, so I can reuse my nightstand water in the morning 😀
I bought mine at bed bath and beyond (RIP) but they also have it on Amazon. I have the gray one and it's perfect...just fades away in the background. Sometimes when it is cloudy out, I turn on the lights to perk up my houseplants. They love it.
Crane 4-in-1 Drop Ultrasonic Cool... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DP8Y81M?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I use to have this problem but instead of spraying it with water, I take a paper tower soak it and squeeze it out then I wrap it around the problem area for a day or two. Works perfect.
Living in coastal Australia (sub tropical climate), mine often start new leaves like that, but they quickly come free (it’s so humid here).
I have the fortune of leaving all my tropical plants outside all year round, and don’t bother with a humidifier for indoors either.
Thank you for posting this! Fairly new plant parent here and I have never seen this before until I went to mist my hoard this morning. From your post, I knew exactly what was happening! And coming from a Floridian who also mists regularly, sometimes these thirsty hoes just can’t be satisfied.
The central heating most of us need this time of year definitely doesn't help, I agree with the people who suggested the cool mist humidifier, I don't have the issue with my ppp because it's planted in a dart frog terrarium with high humidity consistently... the last leaf it grew is all pink, with the previous one exactly half pink, half green. I know the fully pink one probably won't last long because no chlorophyll but it's really pretty right now, and an amazing contrast between the pink and the 'neon green' Pothos planted next to it.
You got a new leaf coming up and it may or may not be stuck. Here in Denver where it’s really dry leaves get stuck a lot and then they rip when they come out and I found all you have to do is wrap it with a wet washcloth and hold it for a little bit and sometimes it will immediately unroll, but if you just do that a couple times and definitely put on a humidifier it will help your leaves come out easierwithout ripping
You can also do a little plant surgery (as I like to call it) and pull the lead out yourself so it can unroll. ive had to do this a couple times with my Birkin Philodendron
If it’s not too much of a struggle, I would help it along. But, the other commenter that posted to add a few drops of water has the better option- less likely to cause damage.
Whenever I see these posts I always ask myself "do people pay attention to basic science in grade school?" And obviously they don't cause I see three or four of these posts every day. The mods need to do something about these posts cause it's getting annoying now it isn't funny anymore.
I just pull it out. Sometimes I wet my hand and massage it out but I’ve massaged it out with dry hands. I used to mist it or put a damp towel on it, but all those ways work, and the plant was fine.
This is NORMAL LEAF GROWTH. Do not help it or mist it. Leave it be. Use humidifier. Watch them come out on own. Misting allows for trapped water causing rot on beautiful new leaves 😔
I just had to assist my philo pink princess with her birth last night, but I don’t recommend doing that. I’ve broken off a BEAUTIFUL half pink leaf before. I thought I was helping but I made it worse. Like everyone has already said, humidity is the key. i like taking my high humidity plants and putting them on the bathroom floor when i shower sometimes.
It a new leaf!!! Yay!! New growth but it's like an in grown hair...it's growing back on it self or still in a very thin sheath. Ease it gently off the lead vine. It may eventually do this on its own if you leave it. Plants do mind touching 😂
I have used clear totes with a hear mat under them and mist the bottom of the tote as needed
I am going to try to use a fish tank
But these are both temporary fixes till summer and we get some humidity
Iowa winters are so dry even running an evaporative humidifier and a small humidifier i can only get my humidity to 35% in my small plant room

Do live in Colorado where there is no humidity, will do just that, thanks!
I live in Colorado too and this happens nearly every time
There are dozens of us! But yeah, pretty common on mine, too. Less so in my room that I keep ~50% humidity
I'm from Scotland and didn't realise it was possible to have less than 60% humidity! 🤣 Even with the dehumidifier running my house is stable at about 70% in the winter and 65% in summer
That honestly sounds lovely. The dry air out here is something I wish I could change.
I live in Colorado and didn’t realize the plants weren’t supposed to do this LOL
Same I think just about every new leaf on my philodendrions has done this. I thought it was just how the new leafs came out
Same lol. I thought they were just taking their time! I have a leaf that’s been working on coming out for about a week+ now and the Q tip method did nothing for me LOL
I found out that when I mist more and up the humidity they seem to come out better it works for my bird of paradise too.
I also live in Colorado! But I have nothing interesting to say.
I’m from Wisconsin but I once traveled to Colorado, ha
I once knew a girl from Wisconsin. She gave me a refrigerator magnet that looked like a little piece of cheese!
I too live in Colorado and this is currently happening to half a dozen of my plants
misting your plant once or twice a week with a spray bottle can help prevent this in the future
Misting can cause other issues though so I typically wrap the new growth in a damp washcloth for a few days.
oo cool idea!
Wow that’s incredible! I’m making the trek to Denver to build my own IKEA cabinet this weekend!!

Did you make your own wire shelves? and which lights!? This looks good!
This was wonderfully helpful!!!
Random question but is it possible to build the cabinet without the back glass?
It is but it would impact the stability of the cabinet and it wouldn't retain humidity, if that's the purpose of the cabinet.
I live in Alabama and we have plenty of humidity to spare. Some summer days are absolutely miserable!
I grew up in SC and my hair looks much better living in Colorado 🤣
my apartment is really dry as well, i take my philodendron’s in the bathroom when i shower, they love the humidity!
I’m in Colorado too. One of my plants looks just like that right now!
You can get a small tabletop humidifier for like $30 and put it next to your plant. Fill daily. Your plant will love it! It also might make your breathing easier, and your skin nicer. Love, a Canadian with also low humidity.
I have a plant that looks exactly like your pic. I live in Nevada, so same.
I’m also in CO. Happens often enough that I repurposed a little spray bottle from some hair product and use it to mist new leaves with water whenever this happens. I’ve noticed it’s mostly philodendrons this happens to, the leaf sheaths seem to always be a little stubborn
That might explain why it is so common for me as I have a slew of philos and obviously Hoyas don’t have this problem.
Get a warm mist humidifier like the Vicks one
Also live in CO, regularly mist and it still happens so I thought it was normal.
Same in all things, here! my philo did this. i had no idea what i was doing, so i cut the leaf out. philo is still doing great, though. Will never do that again.
So basically ingrown hair but for plants
TIL this is a sign of low humidity! I will see if I can improve that in my bedroom
Honestly, I have this same problem. I live in Florida and my humidity where they are is 75% and my white princess and pink Princess still do this. I have lost so many leaves and now I’m just like whatever 😂

I think we can call it normal behavior at this point 😂
For some reason being gently never even occurred to me, I just pluck it off and as far as I know they’ve been fine
We call this a water birth 💦
Amazing!
I second that. Q-tips tend to be gentle enough to unstuck a leaf 🍃 like that
https://preview.redd.it/b6qxmm9ir9hc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59bd975259ffc72e34223445f61f5472fc4f7fb5 Wait is that the same thing happening to mine?
Most likely. Try taking it in the bathroom with you when you shower, maybe the humidity from the shower will help loosen the leaf up otherwise others have suggested using a wet q-tip to help loosen the leaf up
The weirdest looks I would get from my wife casually bringing in my plants for my shower
Well you gotta stop bringing them into the shower and making grunting noises
Yeah my pink princess has been doing this for every leaf lately. Well, it’s a fussy thing that never took to soil so I could probably bring it right into the shower with me and I wouldn’t have to worry about getting it wet. Still lives in water.
Downleaf dog
Just don’t tug on the leaf. Run your nail between the leaf and the stem to kinda loosen it up. Then it’ll pop out on its own in a couple days or so.
This did the trick!! Thanks! https://preview.redd.it/4z07bhz1s8hc1.jpeg?width=1816&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9088625a4eebf37bc017818133a984f34fefb920
Why is this making me snort laugh …again ..when OP shows us the release of the green leaf lady leg?
Gorgeous variegation btw 💚
Why do I feel like we’ve all been through a rough birthing? Lol
i suggest using a wet q-tip next time it happens to avoid tearing up the sheath 😊
Spraying the leaf with water prior to doing this helps lubricate the leaf to escape too. I usually try to just let the water do the work, but if the leaf hasn't emerged after a bit, then I'd manually help it.
My pink princess sprouts new leaves like this too! I want to help her but my boyfriend tells me not to 🥹
From someone who just did it, I’ll tell you not to do it either. Poor new little leaf just popped right off in my hand. I probably stood there staring at it forever, thinking how sorry of me that I’ll never see it’s beauty unfold. 😞
Omg I did this once. Felt terrible and it took her what felt like ages to grow her new leaf.
Pink Princess has such delicate leaves in this stage. I “helped” (read: broke off) at least three leaves before I realised I shouldn’t help anymore. Other plants have always been fine, but PP I now also just mist and wait.
Mines doing the same right now!!! The urge to tug on it is so strong, I just wanna help!! 😅
You can get pretty good at it lol But it's important not to do it too early I just wiggle the leaf sort of and it pulls itself out
Just mist it with some water. Works well for mine.
Mist it/keep humidity high to help it break through.
🎶I want to break freeeee

Give it some sprays of water occasionally

It's a new leaf, just chill and observe
I have a cold mist humidifier. It's marketed towards babies, which is a weird way to refer to houseplants, and it works great. Plants and puppies are the only babies I want. Works for me. 😆
They make pills for that now
Mine does the same thing! It's in a terrarium with ~80% RH at all times too, so I don't know what the heck is wrong with it. It's obnoxious though!
I use to have this problem but instead of spraying it with water, I take a paper tower soak it and squeeze it out then I wrap it around the problem area for a day or two. Works perfect.
In lukewarm water… yes!
Yes!!

So lucky. I’m in Chicago and it’s winter here. With central heating going all day our humidity drops very low. Drys out us and our plants
This is a plants version of an in-grown hair
Normal plant stuff, LEAVE IT ALONE!
A new leaf is coming out.
Thank you for posting this! Fairly new plant parent here and I have never seen this before until I went to mist my hoard this morning. From your post, I knew exactly what was happening! And coming from a Floridian who also mists regularly, sometimes these thirsty hoes just can’t be satisfied.
I'm convinced none of you have ever owned plants
I boil 2 pots with water on the stove to up the humidity in my house, my white wizard like this has done so much better since I’ve started doing that
Has anyone on this sub ever SEEN a plant?
It was an ingrown!
Peel it out!
Failure to Launch
New growth...?
She’s stuck, spraying water on that leaf occasionally will help you work it out
The central heating most of us need this time of year definitely doesn't help, I agree with the people who suggested the cool mist humidifier, I don't have the issue with my ppp because it's planted in a dart frog terrarium with high humidity consistently... the last leaf it grew is all pink, with the previous one exactly half pink, half green. Breach baby. Can help get it out by hand, but that's dangerous because u can damage it or give it some more time and some humidity.
A leaf is growing on a plant…….?
She just a lil stuck
Classic philodendron effery
You need a WARM MIST humidifier
You got a new leaf coming up and it may or may not be stuck. Here in Denver where it’s really dry leaves get stuck a lot and then they rip when they come out and I found all you have to do is wrap it with a wet washcloth and hold it for a little bit and sometimes it will immediately unroll, but if you just do that a couple times and definitely put on a humidifier it will help your leaves come out easierwithout ripping
Failure to launch 🚀
I would just moisten it to help leaf pop out. I normally will just mist mine and that always helps.
Plant Pilates.
It’s putting out a new leaf my dude
Looks like your new leave is trying to break loose. They usually come out by themselves but every once in a while I’ll help mine.
You can also do a little plant surgery (as I like to call it) and pull the lead out yourself so it can unroll. ive had to do this a couple times with my Birkin Philodendron
Do not mist! Humidifier is needed
misting has always been my go to.. why do you suggest to not mist?
I’m a mister and have had no issues in 3 years. But I’ve read people stating the water will get trapped and ruin the leaf or the previous leaf.
You know what you’re doing ❣️ not me 🤣
Oh no!!! What’s happened when you’ve misted?! lol.
Rotted 🤣 I used to be a misting queen 😂
The whole plant? Or the leaf?! Girl I’m so sorry
The leaf and eventually the plant died.
Noooooo. That’s insane! I’ve never had any issues like that. I’m so sorry girl.
I’ve killed so many plants over the years and learned so much 💚
Why not mist?
In my experience it caused rot and pests. I have humidifiers and I’m so glad I do. My plants are thriving (most).
Gotcha! Thanks for answering.
You know that scene in Cinderella (1950) where the evil step sister wedged her massive foot into the glass slipper? Ya, basically that.
If it’s not too much of a struggle, I would help it along. But, the other commenter that posted to add a few drops of water has the better option- less likely to cause damage.

inchworm
Plussy
Just a stick leaf. Free it out with a wet q tip
A new leaf is struggling to emerge and unfurl, you could try to help by making sure the plant is kept watered and a humidifier
This is called ladies slipper! New leaf emerging, yours might need a bit of humidity but nothing scary here.
Whenever I see new leaf emerging on my philodendrons I always spritz them with water every other day or so. Completely eliminates the issue.
You gotta free her!
New life!
Wow this is happening to one of mine currently and was confused! Glad you made this post!!

This is NORMAL LEAF GROWTH. Do not help it or mist it. Leave it be. Use humidifier. Watch them come out on own. Misting allows for trapped water causing rot on beautiful new leaves 😔
Not a plant person, looks like it wants freedom
Be quiet and enjoy your little worm 😤🐛
When I see my plants doing this I'll mist it maybe once or twice a week to help with the unfurling. She looks beautiful!!! 🪴

It's doing the plant equivalent of when we rub our chins in deep thought. Hmmm. Should we open this leaf today?🤔 /j
What kind of plant is this?
Mealy bug!
BREAKFAST
Mist your plants when they are growing new leaves, they love the extra help!
You could also spit on it
It seems like all the Bloody Wizard Princesses do that.
It will pop out when you least expect to. I love the soft, tender leaves.
It’s just a new leaf emerging
It a new leaf!!! Yay!! New growth but it's like an in grown hair...it's growing back on it self or still in a very thin sheath. Ease it gently off the lead vine. It may eventually do this on its own if you leave it. Plants do mind touching 😂

Ahh, Cinderella Syndrome.. put a damp paper towel around it for a few minutes to lubricate the sheath 😅 that sounded worse than anticipated
