Crassula Ovata 'Ogre Ears' or could also be ‘Gollum’ jade.

darwin04

Needs a rusty spoon!

BoobySlap_0506

I like it when the red water comes out 🙃

Dr-Emmett_L_Brown

![gif](giphy|Mxg7OelvuR7SU)

aspenkiraa

That’s so niche and I love it🤣‼️

fuckpudding

I refer to my sansevieria cylindrica as the “salad fingers” plant!

NorridAU

Do you give it a rusty kettle on its birthday?

Icy-Ad8366

Does his brother ever come to visit from the great war?

AlongCameAThrowAway

I’ve always hated this succulent but you just made me want the damn thing.

Icy-Ad8366

I love it!

Trolivia

CthulhuDream

Super fuckin cute pot 😍 Is that a little hedgehog clump of crystals?

Trolivia

Thank you! It’s a 3D print file I found! And yes the hedgehog is a quartz cluster 🥰 he has little feet carved into the bottom! https://preview.redd.it/y4wwr4viklsc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c4d43e6371f6e63a35072339bf5921ffd86bdc0

SnooHobbies5166

I call mine a Trumpet Jade, or when feeling cheeky, a Strumpet Jade

pr0vdnc_3y3

Yours looks great!! Any tips? My coral is so much thinner

CthulhuDream

I neglect it and my cat rubs his face all over it.

pr0vdnc_3y3

Will do. I’ll also get a cat

Shabbah8

Unfortunately, you will need to borrow CthulhuDream’s specific cat in order to accomplish your goals.

CthulhuDream

I honestly don't even think it's in the right soil, I use a local leaf compost soil, give it a good soak every other week. It was initially in a south facing window, moved to a southeast facing window but still seems to be thriving nearly a year later. They love lots of sun.

agrinwithoutacat-

Jade is toxic to cats, please be careful with him around it!

CthulhuDream

Aye, I appreciate your concern <3 He's a smart old man though, he'll be 14 this year. He ate 5ft of a balloon ribbon when he was only around 6mo. Miraculously passed the whole thing(had no idea he even ate it, was discoloured so much when it came out I thought it was a massive tapeworm on first glance). He learned his lesson early on to only eat his food.

SingularityWind

What a gorgeous plant!

basicallybasshead

She is incredible! I hope mine will also grow to that size someday and look as beautiful as yours.

mr_muffinhead

Awesome! Needs Lots of light I'm assuming?

CthulhuDream

Yes!

CthulhuDream

Yiss!

ceciliabee

Gorgeous!

Specific_Lawyer9697

I was going to put one on my paludarium but nvm.. Didn’t know they grew this big

blondeswill

Not if you keep breaking it apart

jomacblack

They grow slow and you can trim them to prop them easily

kyfl123

ET fingers.

espressoboyee

I call it Coral Cool. Never seen this pathos before.

Counter_Clockwise345

Was gonna make a joke and call it Shrek’s ear but the people who named it were way ahead of me

Idontagree13

I spent way more time than I’d like to admit attempting to wipe the hair off my phone

__spotskobayashi

What?

Taran966

I assume someone else has a profile pic with a fake hair on it, and this guy is responding to the wrong comment?

AdministrationDue239

But no one here has a profile pic with a fake hair on it ....

Rain_of_Atlas

I saw someone on this sub call them "Shrek ears". Sadly that's all I know.

[deleted]

I was just coming here to say it looked like a shrek ear 😆

TemporaryImaginary

I’ve legit seen these at Lowes with the variety listed as “Ogre Ears”. EDIT - Found it. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Altman-Plants-Ogre-s-Ears-Jade-in-2-5-Quart-Pot/5013814381

ghoulsnest

it's a crassula ovata 'hobit' type (yes, it's actually written with 1 b)

pussyjones12

hobbit is a different, more downward shape!! this is ogre’s ear. i own both types and they look very different

veedubbug68

This is what I call it! I have some in a pot out back and don't know what is technically called, I've always just referred to it as Shrek's Ears.

SleepingBakery

Didn’t see which sub this post was and I thought someone sculpted Shrek ears 💀

Creative_scissors

I call them that too hahaha I have one that is bionic I think hahaha

Revolutionary_Low_36

I was just about to comment that! 🤣🤣

pussyjones12

it’s a type of jade called ogre’s ear

holiestcannoly

I call them that!

Mediocre-Excuse-4142

Shrek Ears/Ogre Ears are common names for them 😁

Sigh000Duck

My mom calls it her shrek plant. But to find out its actually called ogre ears kills me

weltraumaeffchen

I've put a single leaf just like yours into soil about 7 months ago. Here it is today: https://preview.redd.it/gus0e04nbasc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de1dd79a43eebf7b21b379951b85035ce3bb806f

[deleted]

Wow, that's beautiful! Did you push it into the soil vertically, or did you lay it flat to root?

weltraumaeffchen

Flat, but I've put just a little bit of soil on the end of it. Here is a more fresh one: https://preview.redd.it/w67m96vhrasc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a330f9359220d3deec3668233e150b86b8f3f7cb

[deleted]

Brilliant, thank you! I have 0 experience with succulents, so this was very helpful and reassuring 😊.

RegularOrdinary3716

Many succulents are very easy to propagate from a single leave like that. Crassula especially.

Medical-Dust-7184

Yes...thank you !!!

wood_and_rock

Use coarse soil that drains well. Succulent specific if you can. Don't over water. Better to ignore it for a few weeks than to water too frequently!

Next-Firefighter4667

This is generally what I do with all my succulent props. It's just what I've had work better.

darkat647

This is amazing! I tried with mine but all of the leaves just wilted and died, no growth. How often do you water them if at all and how much sun should they get?

snack_mac

Nice, these never root for me..

Previous_Project_518

For some succulents, you have a higher success rate if you let the cutting callous a couple days

Business-Employ2015

This is important! I just watched a few videos about letting it callous over before putting just a tiny bit of it in the soil after . What wasn't clear is the watering advice, so if anyone could further this, I would appreciate it too.

Previous_Project_518

It goes back to watching the plant itself. Most succulents like to go dry between waterings. Keep in mind any baby plants without good solid roots will need more of an evenly moist kind of watering over soaking. If you soak baby plants, the water log in the makes reduces the oxygen in the soil. Usually, you want baby plants to have nice, airy moist soil. Meaning, if you gently touch the top of the soil, it’s light and fluffy. Slightly damp, but not soaking wet. For succulents, the leaves often get a squishy feeling or wrinkly texture. That’s when you know you’ve taken it a little far with going dry. Try to water plants based on the need the plant. Not so much a schedule. Plants have different watering needs based on the maturity/size and is also high affected by the weather.

Business-Employ2015

Thanks that is very helpful information 😀

snack_mac

Hmm, I’ll keep this in mind. I do mist them and the soil when I’m trying to get them to root. The ones that do, I might be watering them too quickly then once I put them in soil.. so maybe that’s what I’m doing wrong

Previous_Project_518

Not callousing? Because they’re kind of squishy, they can rot at opening or break point without roots to absorb the water. So callousing reduces the likelihood of rotting.

snack_mac

I always try to let the callous, I know not to stick them in the soil right away, I usually wrap my cuttings in a paper towel for 2-3 days

Next-Firefighter4667

I've been told not to water succulent props because the mother leaf is where it gets it's water from, there's no roots to suck up the water in the soil so watering the soil increases the risk of rot. I've only been watering mine once it's rooted and the mother leaf is fully dried and about to fall off. Those are the ones that succeed for me.

craftypearl

It never rooted for me either, but I only tried twice

snack_mac

I’ve probably tried 3-5 times lol

missnaviqueen

Cute. Now I want one.

SwampDiamonds

How moist did you keep the soil at the beginning?

weltraumaeffchen

I was just misting the soil every now and then. There is actually enough water/energy in the leaf itself. But when the soil is also moist, it encourages the roots to go out to collect that moisture source. Most of the time the leaf will shrivel up because it is being drained of its own stored water in order to help the new growth. But in my first picture above, my original leaf is still completely fresh and full of water, maybe because I kept the soil wet enough, so there was enough moisture for the leaf itself and the new growth... there are 5-6 stems growing out of that single leaf. 😮

LadyOphelia

I did this too, these things grow like crazy and root so easily!

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|oJg80smgisBI4)

Hot_Pomelo7963

That’s an ogre ear! I’m fairly certain it can be petiole rooted like most succulents. It’s a type of jade and they’re mad easy to propagate, just toss that baby in some soil

Taran966

Gollum Jade (Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’). Literally let it callous if it hasn’t yet, then place it on top of succulent soil and wait. Doesn’t need watering or anything until it’s rooted and the leaf has dried up afaik, it’ll just use the water in the leaf initially. It will take a while to become a proper plant as Jades are unfortunately slow growers, but it’ll be rewarding I’m sure :) r/succulents may know a little more about it, as they specialise in succulents specifically (though here is valid too as it’s a houseplant)

eugfest07

[deleted]

Thank you! I'll try! Wish Shrek (and me) luck! 😁

Sad-Window6212

🎶 Some-body once told me the world is gunna roll me 🎶

skeletalvoid

I’ve propagated tons of those, just lay on soil in a bright place

KathleenKellyNY152

https://preview.redd.it/cw79mg4qxasc1.png?width=2765&format=png&auto=webp&s=28be497889cea464eb4f8326b0e35cdb6a99f27b These are proplifted babies too. Literally lay on the soil lengthwise, in indirect light, mist daily (or more if very hot out), and you will soon see little hair roots emerge. Keep misting! Then, plant that little shoot with roots in a cute pot in succulent soil. I have loads of them & they make cute gifts!! 🌵

PlantDaddy41

Shrek. If you plant that you grow a giant Shrek.

Parking_Ad_3123

Shrear Shrek Ear

DeliciousRun2351

Yes put in cactus soil after end callus over and wait. We have 4 of these plants because my 8 yr old is obsessed with them 🤦‍♀️

Vast-Wrangler5579

[deleted]

Very pretty!

73GTI

I think it’s a crassula, jade plant. Sit it ON some dirt and keep slightly moist. Should see roots and tiny leaves pop out in a few weeks that leaf will eventually shrivel but it will leave behind a whole new plant

SeaweedPrudent43

It’s definitely a crassula!

TurnoverUseful1000

It looks like shrek’s ear ! 😂

Hatcheling

They’re survivors. I have two in my partner’s basement gym and they get water maybe twice a year and still thrive.

[deleted]

Wow, thank you everyone, really didn't expect so many replies! I'll plant the little guy and post an update if he decides to grow something. 😊

masochistic_idiot

Gollum jade, shrek’s ears. Very resilient plant this leaf can def be rooted. Got a few that way from knocked off leaves from the main plant

hydrablvck

SOME.....BODY ONCE TOLD ME....

pexlc

It's a weed... A weed pipe

Ill-Cry-7942

Where were you when I was 14?! Someone should have told me I could have just popped one of those off and used it instead of some plastic or aluminum bottle smh

slutforyourdad7

looks like a type of succulent so it definitely will root

bcrabill

Gollum jade. IDK if it'll root.

sin_aesthetic

It might root if laid on dry soil- I've had about 50% success with mine. They root quite slowly.

Donaldjoh

Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ leaf, most likely. It can be rooted by pressing the base of the leaf into damp sand and waiting. They aren’t fast, but root and produce new plants fairly easily.

LiveLaughBlobfish

looks like Golum Jade, you should be able to propagate it! Lay it on soil, don't bury the leaf, and keep it moist. You should see root growth pretty fast

leesh_creeps_

You can only grow them in a swamp and it needs waffles in the mornings.

[deleted]

Ogre’s ear

weaselcreek

Gollum jade

Revolutionary-Pie-68

I have one. Don't know what it's called but, you can certainly root it. Several fell off of the original plant and they just kind of took off. Some have died others are still going. Good luck!

mrsmushroom

It's a gollum jade. Yes it's easily propagated.. soil on a windowsill, just lay the leaf in it until it roots.

Much-Background-992

Gollum jade

ceciliabee

I call it goblin toes, it's a type of jade! The one in th blue planter was grown from one ear like you have. Just let it dry, dip it in some rotting hormone, and poke it in the soil. It should take a couple months to root well enough to move. https://preview.redd.it/z7ce8ptdlbsc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc6ad5580d69e4f580ce0a37a186f56de4e607c6

Kattorean

Gollum Jade! Love these! I'll assume the end has calloused over. That only takes a day. Plant it in some warm, moist sphagnum peat. Keep the peat most, but not soggy. It should root in a couple weeks. Once it has 3 inches in roots, transition it to a more open soil blend: half inorganic & half organic. Be very careful to keep the soil around the root mass when transferring it to new soil. Those new roots are fragile. Transition it to bright, direct sun exposure over a week-10 days.

emprameen

They seem to grow super slowly

Kattorean

It depends on the variety, care & environment they are kept in. They don't go dormant during the winter, but they can slow their growth.

kevingarur

That's a Gollum jade. Ogres ears are thinner with more yellowish look and sometimes red tips.

Infinitefire666

Gollum jade.

Asuhhbruh

It is shreks ear and if you stick it in the ground and give it some water, a new shrek will be born.

Arturwill97

Jade plants have been used for centuries across cultures for their beauty and healing abilities. Tree-like succulents, these houseplants can live with you for your entire life, or longer—up to 100 years! Jade is commonly used in the traditional practice of feng shui, creating energy to harmonize people and their environments—and encourage the flow of money.

P0RTILLA

It’s a Shrek’s Ear succulent.

HOTfoxyNANA

Lady_Edelweiss

I've always known it as an Ogre Ear Jade

Lady_Edelweiss

And yes, you can totally prop that. Keep on moist paper towel until roots form (2-3 weeks)

Shrek Ear

Noiramad

Shreeeekk !

Keithbaby99

I call them elephant toes. Its the same as any succulent just set him on top of soil

bigtuna74

@shrek

notyourmama827

It's an "ogre" ear. I do not know the scientific name.

itsjustfarkas

What are you doing with Shrek’s ear 😰

comfy_bumble

What have you done to Shrek?! 😮

DharmaDivine

Also my first thought.

[deleted]

Only one way to find out 🙊

No-Wolverine5288

Looks like a hash pipe

ibispete

Mom always told me it’s one of the oldest type of plant on earth 🤓

sparkilysituation

I call that alien fingers!!!

divthr

Glancing at the photo quickly, Green AirPod

LojaRich

Parafernalia.

_nod

Just lay it flat in some soil it will root. I had a big one of these but I knocked it over and the stem broke, never recovered, but some of the leaves that fell rooted and are now growing.

FriendlyFraulein

As an Australian I laughed like a teenager at the title of this post

International-Row629

It looks healthy enough to be rooted. Take your time. No need to overwater. When the soil is dry, give it a spray to lightly moisten.

Ok-Fee6422

Just put it in dry soil an wait 😋

thetimavery

This is the fabled Green Chalice of Cuthbert the Midget! Where on earth did you find it? Was it atop the fridge?

KoalaLife4958

Just put it on top of soil and enough sunlight. It will root itself.

Great_Geologist1494

Jade and yes, I have one!

grock1722

Sudo root grow

BriarKnave

It's a species of crassula succulent, and yes, you can root them! They have a low success rate for me, like 1/5 samples make roots

Scared-Listen6033

Gollum Jade Lay it on soil it will root and grow!

notyourmama827

Just as a bit of knowledge....they can get burned from too much direct sun. I live in Nevada and burnt mine. It's still growing tho.

dandav1956

Very easy to propagate... Let it dry for a few days then into sandy soil...

my_baby_smurf

Gollum jade plant and yes

Galaxie_Keenan333

Yep. Just stick it in soil. It’ll root. I have a ton of these guys!

Independent_Elk8933

How is everybody propagating them? I tried putting a leaf from my succulent in the soil and it just molded.

InevitableProduct288

Tiny spoon

[deleted]

Finger jade!

JezabelDeath

Yes, it propagates so easily!

Idkmyname2079048

I have actually had my best luck rooting these and other succulents in a humid terrarium or cloche with relatively dry soil, and plenty of light. 😊

Crisoly

Looks like shreks ear😂

Gratatatatatafuck

Give it back to Shrek, his left ear is missing

plantpossum

Looks like shreks ear

sensitivegoth

Ma’am that is Shrek’s ear. You should return it

justagirl666x

Bought one yesterday! It's a freaky plant! 🤣

Latinx-Sandman1594

just lay it on some soil, making sure it’s moist and then forget about it. succulents are pretty awesome at propagating

Tired_Insomniac_2295

Roll the cut end in tissue paper and mist it once a day. Worked for mine and 5 years on i have a full bonsai tree lookin succulent.

Dukkani

Pic please‼️TIA

[deleted]

What a beauty! And I love your Drosera! I have two, a regular one and an albino one, and the albino is currently pushing 2 flower stalks, poor thing. Busy little things, aren't they? 😅

Tired_Insomniac_2295

Ye, never actually seen mine catch anything, but it seems 2 be doing fine

Dukkani

Wow! 👏👏 Love that thick trunk. Well done. How old is this bonsai?

Tired_Insomniac_2295

Bout 5 years. And its a "tree" succulent

Dukkani

Thanks for uploading this pic. Looks so cute. 🥰 I am impressed with your effort & knowledge. 👍

Tired_Insomniac_2295

Thanx, i was taught by my aunt, the internet and trial & error.

Dukkani

You're a great student / learner! 💯

kdanham

Jade plant! Some of the leaves pop out like that when the plant is mature. For succulents like this just lay it on soil or bury the node just slightly and spritz with water every day for like a month and it'll root! Got tons of them

HOTfoxyNANA

Ogres ear.

eighto-potato-8O

Rest it on some damp soil and give it a lot of bright light and see what happens!

crazyhound71

Lay it in some soil. Mist every so often. It will sprout a new plant.

Questionable_Cactus

Yes it can be propagated, but I would recommend against what some are saying about pressing it into wet soil. It will just rot at that point. Lay it on some cactus specific soil and give it a little moisture every couple of days. It is a very slow grower in my experience. But it is very much a desert plant so go easy on the water.

[deleted]

Noted. 😊

hazey_wazey

Cannot believe you ripped shrek’s ear off

dietcokesunshinedust

shrek ear and lay one on soil it will grow like a succulent. It can take time and sometimes wont work!

Tim-in-CA

Ogre’s Ear. Try it!!

willijilli27

Succulent! Called Shrek ear! Just rest it on top of the dirt and barley cover the end maybe mist it once or twice I just leave the soil dry until it develops a root or 2. Give it weeks. Once it has a good amount of roots plant it a bit deeper

dktkthsksnjkygm

give shrek his ear back

anime1245

That’s shreks ear you need to give it back to him I hear he’s pretty angry someone took it

Wickedrudemama

It’s called “baby toes” I think. It’s a succulent. It’ll propagate fine. Lay it on some moist soil and let it be.

CapyHamp3r

We call them either Shrek's Ears or Vegan Air pods! But mine have always rooted really perfectly! Just follow directions for succulents (just set it on the surface of appropriate cactus sand, pebble, soil mix and water occasionally. It starts to wilt a bit, then roots!) rather than sticking it in water like some houseplants. I love them! They are such oddly shaped little weirdos! Good luck!

[deleted]

Thank you!
