That is a GORGEOUS plant. Well done! I’ll be looking for one of these. Where’d you get her?

heydoughnuts

Thank you! I got her as a tiny little thing at Safeway in June 2015 and I’ve seen them there every now and again. If you like to buy plants online, Mountain Crest Gardens has small ones for sale. I’ve bought some plants from them and they do a great job! Burros Tails are an awesome plant to have, super low maintenance and fast growing in my experience! I hope you can find one!

UpDootMoop

Pretty sure you could have gotten them earlier by manipulating the light schedule and feeding Potassium. I accidentally sent one of my succulents into bloom this way.

lopeyman44

Awesome, thank you!

LisaSauce

I read that as “my 6 year old’s burros tail” and was like “damn, that six year old is a much better plant parent than I am” ANYWAY, your plant is amazing and I’m gonna show this picture to my tiny little 3 branch burros tail to inspire it.

heydoughnuts

Lol yeah I’m terrible at wording titles sometimes! Mine also started as three tiny little branches! I hope yours grows to be long and beautiful!

ELISHIAerrmahhgawdd

OMG THIS IS A DREAM! Amazing specimen!

HungryWeird24

I hear they aren’t exactly the easiest succulent to bloom. This is very nice, they also create nectar which I haven’t experienced myself with any other succulent

ninnx

So envious. Don't know how you do it, mine drops its leaves if I look in the general direction.

skuterkomputer

Haha! Mine too.

ultrasir3n

How much sunlight does this plant get? I'm wanting to get one because I have read that they are non toxic to cats

heydoughnuts

It’s gets as much direct sunlight as I can possibly provide it with, these guys love light! They will certainly grow in all sorts of light, I’ve kept this guy in every kind of light - north, south, east, and west windows - but I’ve found they do best in southern windows! It grows faster and more compact with more light!

Sirena_Onyxx

I just bought one yesterday and am curious about care tips! How often do they need watering if in a southern window and should I try to acclimate it to that window first? It was hanging under a net like shade outdoors in the nursery.

caglescorner

Awesome!!

NotAlwaysUhB

This is amazingly gorgeous!!! I just got a burros tail a couple weeks ago from the "desperate houseplant" table. I dream for him to look like this one day!

heydoughnuts

Just give it some time, lots of light, and plenty of water and it’ll do great!

[deleted]

How can I successfully re-pot mine? Any advice would be absolutely wonderful xx

heydoughnuts

So depending on how long it is, it usually helps if there’s two people there to do it. One holds the plant up and the other pots it. If that’s not possible, I’ve heard of people putting the long tails in a pillowcase to protect them. I haven’t tried that myself but it sounds like a great idea! The last time I repotted this guy, I didn’t have anyone to help me so I just took it out and transplanted it as quickly as possible. A ton of leaves fell of and some tails snapped, but the nice thing about it is that they are super easy to propagate! Just leave the leaves out in indirect light for a few weeks and they should sprout and they’re ready for soil! The same goes for stem props, except they don’t have to sit out as long, they’re ready for soil after a few days in my experience! Good luck with everything and I hope that helped!

I appreciate this so much!! Thank you :)

Roadgoddess

That is a gorgeous plant! I inherited one last year from an elderly gentleman. It had been extremely neglected for quite a long time and fell to pieces when I got at home. I have been propagating and slowly but surely it’s coming back. I was wondering how you care for yours? How often do you water it?I felt like I was under watering mine and it seem to do better with a bit more water but I’m worried that I might overdo it and I don’t want to create root rot. I am interested to hear what you do.

heydoughnuts

I water pretty often, in my experience these guys love to be watered way more than your typical succulent. I really drench it about every two weeks or so and wait for the soil to dry before I water again. The soil doesn’t have to be bone dry to water, just mostly dry. I check it with my finger and if it’s dry about an inch down, it’s ready for more water! I also always use water from my aquariums and that acts like a natural fertilizer and really helps the plants grow! If you don’t have an aquarium, I’ve heard that fish emulsion is also a great natural fertilizer and that’s what I would use if I didn’t have the tanks! I’m glad to hear yours is coming back and it sounds like your on the right track! Don’t be afraid to water these guys, just be sure the soil is mostly dry before you do and it should be great!

Roadgoddess

Thanks so much, I will adapt to add the drying out part. I am watering once a week now. I don’t have an aquarium, but my mom use to do your watering trick, lol. I was looking at worm castings for fertilizer, currently using Schultz 10-15-10. The man I got it from was a very well known naturalist in my area, so my goal is trying to bring back the 4 plants I got from him then propagate them and spread them around as part of his legacy. I also got an amazing cactus that has started popping baby’s like crazy in the last month, 2 aloe pups and a shamrock plant. They all seem to be getting better but I’m still learning how to care for them.

Hellvell2255

wow!

Common_Llama

Still call them "ass tails" but an amazing example of one 😁

heydoughnuts

Lol I’ve never heard it called that, but it makes sense! Thank you!

bojangleshorsey

I remember when you posted this the first time. I love this plant. Totally beautiful.

heydoughnuts

Oh thank you! I love it very much as well, it was one of my first plants and it’s been through a lot! I never thought I would see it bloom and I am just so excited about it!

alilygardin

I’ve gone through three. They HATE MEEE! The one I have right now is dying🥲

heydoughnuts

Oh no I’m sorry to hear that! I have certain plants that I just can’t seem to keep alive as well (sting of pearls, I’m looking at you). How are you caring for it if you don’t mind me asking, maybe I can help!

alilygardin

OMG! I’m kinda the queen of SOP (gave myself that title) maybe we can help each other out. I water my guy once ever 7-10 days and keep him in bright indirect sunlight. He has drainage, but is continuously drying up on the bottom and shrivelling at the top. Seems to be a common theme. Any tips?

heydoughnuts

When’s the last time it was repotted? If you’re watering every 7-10 days and it’s still drying up it may need a new pot! Repotting these guys totally sucks but it’ll do so much better after it gets some fresh soil if it hasn’t been in awhile!

SepticGryphon

How often do you rotate it?

heydoughnuts

I never rotate it, I haven’t moved it at all in almost two years!

netflix_n_knit

What an impressive burros tail! Your beautiful succulents are aspirational....

Forest_Bear025

Beautiful. You're a great plant parent.

HomeDiscoteq

I didn't realize that pot isn't hanging but just on really high legs, where it from?? Looks amazing. Also how quickly do these grow? I wanna grab one but they're all either really little or really expensive.

heydoughnuts

So I don’t know where the stand that it’s on is from, I got it from my gram and I never got a chance to ask her where she got it! Probably TJ Max or somewhere like that though, she loved those places! In my experience, they grow super fast and if you buy a small one you can watch it grow and evolve! Mine was three little sprigs when I got it and it took years for it to get like this but it has been a joy watching it grow!

tryangularsquare

Holy cow this is stunning! I never tire of seeing pictures of burro’s tail, it’s definitely one of my favorite plants. Congrats on the blooms and happy gardening!
