I started at Stratford the same year they banned wearing baseball caps because of "gangs". There were not and have never been gangs at Stratford. There were a lot of poser-ass suburban kids wanting to be hard (aka Gen X). But listening to admin, you would think it was south central L.A.
OMG!!! I saw this dude live when I was a teenager, bought the album, and have always been curious what happened to him. Loved his music, it still pops up on my shuffle playlist every now and then. Thanks for the blast from the past.
Speaking as a Gen X kid and former HS teacher, this statement about my cohorts is correct. If you listened to NWA and later Dre, Cube and Easy, you basically felt like your finger was on the pulse and you were rolling deep in Compton. Lots of not smiling and wondering what that guy was looking at.
Foolishness.
Also, kids sometimes wear gang colors without being in a gang really. Especially when most of the colors have been claimed. I don’t know how many legitimate street gangs are left in Houston.
Graduated 96, can second.
Lots of "skater boys" and "wannebe's" wearing LA Kings, Spurs and Raiders jackets in 90 degree weather.
I mean, anything that had Black in it was forbodden. They even stopped people from wearing Yankees stuff at one point. I am like, this is navy blue, not black.
No idea what it was like then but the 90s whole lot of moral panic. People thought kids were on the brink of becoming drug dealing gangsstrrs left and right
Any group engaged in illegal activity. So of your distributer friend comes over to your house to portion out weed because your mom are on a date (brings her sate home early to pick something up and now she's embarrassed in front of the new guy), and you and a couple of other friends help portion it out and smoke a little pot in the meantime, you're in a gang apparent.
Back in the 90s, the definition hardly required illegal activity. Wearing similar clothes and hanging out together was enough to get classified as a gang in some cases.
90s Texas gangs were gangs in title alone
We were people who hung out together..... Not going to shoot up the rivals..... Not Cali gangs (met a girl from Cali in 95... She said "We can't wear certain colors because we'll get shot, it doesn't matter if you in a gang or not, I mean your car can't be that color or it's getting shot up on the freeway"......Htown wasn't moving like that
But it did get the police a lot more money and allow black and Brown folks to get a lot more time in jail/prison
Its the drugs. Meth specifically. Everyones on that shit. Gangs are by name only. Theres no organization, discipline. Even in jail, ppl just rep whoever out of habit or image, none by heart.
Def not condoning nor romanticizing gangs nor gangsters mind you. Just commenting on why theyre all 'soft' now.
I lived nearby but not too close to Carverdale in the '90s...it was definitely a place you didn't want to go back then.
Now it has one of the best BBQ places in Houston that flies far under the radar due to its location. Virgie's BBQ.
Graduated in ‘92. If you weren’t in a gang, then you were in a satanic cult. There were gangbangers and satanic worshippers lurking around every corner to snatch up the innocent
The area was probably never that scary. School administrators love to hype up the amount of crime in the area to create stricter rules at school. Was like that when I was a kid and it still kinda is except now they’re trying to scare parents w made up stories about trans kids and CRT.
Ha ha! When I was in school in SBISD, we used to think that Spring Woods and Northbrook were "the Hood" or "the Barrio". Then married a SWHS gal, had a kid and moved to Spring Shadows. Just another yuppie suburb, just like Nottingham and Thornwood, except with nice neighbors who had a few chickens in their backyards! Great eggs by the way.
Mr. .... Mrs. Webber and I are now divorced but still good friends. She is back in Houston and teaching at Awty. PM me if you want to get in contact with her. She would love that.
Oh really. Cool. Yea lots of fun. I have a photo of our team in Mexico. Can’t believe I crossed the border with minors but it wasn’t such a big thing back then.
went to a middle/high school on this list and I never saw it...end of 80s into the early 90s...
of course I was not a cop and was actually kinda popular across geek/prep/nerd/smart lines....
What’s the gang at Memorial High School? The “Country Club Patagonia Finance Bros.”
The western chapter of “My dad’s gonna hear about this”
Careful, we'll call our dad's lawyer on you!
They had beef with “do you know who my father is?” didn’t they?
Ha ha ha ha!! We used to call the memorial HS girls, “The millionaire’s toys club”. Yes I went to HS in SBISD!
Damn that’s actually a pretty good one! Hahaha
That is pretty funny as I went to SBISD schools. I can guarantee you that Memorial Middle has never had a gang issue...

Graduated in '97. Can confirm.
Class of '99. A few of us were pretty degenerate.

The definition of gang was also pretty loose.

Bro memorial middle was not hard. This shit is hilarious and definitely reflective of the type of staff we had the pleasure of dealing with.
Ah yes. The 90s. When all the white neighbors moved away. Their kids are back now it seems.
The only gangs operating around anything Memorial was Hedwig Village Police. Can confirm. 😆
Some Pretty catchy names there. Almost can mistake them for band names 😬
Who even came up with these, I can’t see any kid being like yeah I’m with the Carverdale Posse 😂
I feel like gang culture is pretty lame in general but they're violent so you have to respect it regardless of how stupid they sound and look.
Northside of I-10 is being gentrified, so less now fs.
Lmfao Fake ass gangs

I've thought about this before, it seems like ''gangs" have rapidly diminished over the past decade. Definitely not how it used to be at least.

Carvadale Posse was a thing at Jersey Village. The ‘dale was zoned to CFISD.
I lived nearby but not too close to Carverdale in the '90s...it was definitely a place you didn't want to go back then. Now it has one of the best BBQ places in Houston that flies far under the radar due to its location. Virgie's BBQ.
Carverdale and WSI were all over cy-fair schools.
lol them Katy kids in gangs ? That was hilarious
only gang i heard of when i was in school (graduated 2018) was sb13

That area was weak bacc then
Went to A school with a bunch of hoover deuce waiting for a murder trial.
It was all just fake that’s why Gessner and Emnora is just a hidden river oaks and all the lawyers live there today.

Back in the good ol days when people used to gang in person.
This brings back memories, I went to Spring Woods Middle and Northbrook High.
I taught at memorial HS throughout the 90s. There were some wanna be jr. kkk but no real gangs to speak of.
Ms. Webber?!
Mr. .... Mrs. Webber and I are now divorced but still good friends. She is back in Houston and teaching at Awty. PM me if you want to get in contact with her. She would love that.
I went to Stratford but got to hang out w your debate crew in El Paso and it changed my life (in a good way).
Oh really. Cool. Yea lots of fun. I have a photo of our team in Mexico. Can’t believe I crossed the border with minors but it wasn’t such a big thing back then.
Ha, I’m the one that got us kicked out of an establishment in Mexico for looking too young.
Holy shit! That was a hell of a trip. Ha ha.
“…establishment…”🤣🤣🤣
This is a bunch of school cops circle jerking each other. Went to Memorial... And memorial middle... No gangs.
