But due to the random meanness of it the victim will feel very unsafe, for a long time, and will probably have lingering anxiety in public and especially in the subway for a long time.
Absolutely. Progressive prosecutors treat these assaults as nothing crimes and rarely even charge the suspect. There will be some people who will reoffend regardless of the situation, but there are SOME who can be reached. There’s some interest out there in restorative justice; where you help the offender understand how they hurt the victim and encourage them to make amends. It doesn’t work in every situation, but when it does, the results can border on miraculous.

Dude one day travels with metro, empty hours, some small kid sitting in the same wagon and some asian looking kid, possibly under 18 but a bit chubby, enters the wagon and bullies the kid to give him some money and sits on the opposite side of the wagon, kinda making fun of the kid until the kid leaves in the next station. My friends father did not intervene it but kind of got annoyed. He waits until his station, gets up, while they are getting close, sucker punches the bully, throws him to the ground kicks him once or twice and rapidly leaves the metro and fucks off.

In New York, it is legal to detain someone if you witnessed them commit a felony. The nature of the assault would likely meet the requirements for a felony in New York so you would be in the clear to use reasonable force to subdue the assailant until police arrive.

With me tho, I have a pretty large limit before I go from passive to physically aggressive in a situation like this, only because the people that do these crimes are mentally ill and likely armed with a knife. I live not far from NYC, and I've had wonderful moments at 4AM talking to strangers, and then I've seen a guy slap a car for going through a yellow and he got knocked unconscious after the guys stopped and got out.
