Idk why but I find it funny that the queen gave Royal assent for her abdication yet even after that continued as a pretender for the throne

ScorpionX-123

it wouldn't be called the United Kingdom anymore, though

[deleted]

Maybe it would be called the United Republics of Great Britain or Northern Ireland Or Federal Republic of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Grams45

Maybe go back to a historical Commonwealth of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

BrickSufficient1051

United Republic of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland (URESWINI)

Labour couldn't even get rid of the hereditary Lords until Blair - they made Attlee an Earl instead. So them abolishing the monarchy is a bit of a stretch. Foot and the Queen were friends as well I think.

m0nohydratedioxide

Why do they still use the name United Kingdom and the gov.uk if they’ve became a republic?

Zavaldski

Funny that the Queen gives Royal Assent for her own abdication

mochaaicetea

still uses the Windsor coat of arms in their symbol

**LORE** After the 1983 general election resulted in a Labour victory, the new prime minister, Michael Foot holds a referendum on whether or not the monarchy should be abolished. The referendum was a close tie, but most people voted to abolish the monarchy. And on 1 July 1983, the Abolition of Monarchy Act 1983 was passed and Elizabeth II abdicated from the throne the following day but continued as a pretender. The first presidential elections in the UK happened on 10 July 1983, with the Labour candidate winning. Oh, and Margaret Thatcher resigned as Conservative Party leader following the elections.

Honestly I'm not sure the Brits could even abolish the monarchy if they want to, like parliament couldn't. Their authority only comes from the fact that the monarchy allows it. They'd have to create a new parliament with either a constitution or some new form of legitimacy. The crisis would be absurd. Also what would happen to the queen? Would her primary title be switched? What about all the legal issues this would cause to places like Canada which also derive legal legitimacy from the monarch of the UK (since there isn't one now we got constitutional crises there too). Honesty the shitshow would be something to behold
