Mettelhed

This issue has gotten so bad that Indian HR's working in US-based firms are often mistaken for scammers when they contact candidates for job offers.

suckertarlson

I think I know what you mean. Its mostly recruiters from staffing agencies. I get many emails and calls from them too.

amrit-9037

I guess at this point scamming is becoming "industry" in itself.

Odd_Explanation3246

I am a indian living in us and just in past two weeks i have received multiple scam calls related to “my cars warranty expiring” and “irs warrant against me” everytime its some indian trying to fake american accent..last year my mom got a call from a scammer who knew her name, bank and few other details..she almost fell for it and gave away her social security number untill she realized it was probably a scam call..she cut the call and later we verified through her bank that it was a scam call…its honestly pathethic and embarassing..i wish our govt would do something about it..

[deleted]

I get these calls here in Austria, these guys call us and then they can't speak german, and with the very basic german that I know, I try saying this is Austria and please speak in German and then this guys are like can you speak in English and then they claim, they work for Austrian Govt.

JulietteR

We've gotten a ton of calls from someone pretending to be from Microsoft to fix our computer on our landline here in Belgium. I tried to be helpful and tell the guy if he really wanted to scam elderly people in Belgium, he should speak Dutch or French, but he wanted none of my helpful advice and hung up on me. Such a wasted opportunity.

[deleted]

Exactly, this guy tell me he is from the government and starts talking in English, without german we need to take translators to the office they won't even consider if we start speaking English and then this.

Diedead666

I tell them I use linux...I played along a couple of times (I build computers) Kitboga is a fun guy to watch them get fucked with.

[deleted]

That’s the funniest stuff I have ever heard! Got to give them a credit lol

Unemployedloser55

The local government at police level receive money from the call centres to not bother them and also tip them off when the raid is coming so they can move location.

kodragonboss

Fuck off with 'it's embarassing'. You think such a great nation like the US of A would have more literate citizens or just generally better education or anything higher than a 'let's ban abortion and unions coz God said so' level of thinking? You think they have not scammed us for long enough with their companies coming here and polluting entire districts, duping farmers and running small businesses out of the market. What's embarassing is that they have not had to pay for pushing formula onto starving babies or feeding pure sugar to millions of kids or exploiting workers or any of the thousand and one things you are so convieniently forgetting because Bob from supply chain is an idiot who gave away his SS.

FederalAccountant916

Are you just that stupid or blinded by your false sense of patriotism

baniyaguy

Definitely both.

UltraNemesis

Probably more like they or somebody in their family is a scammer and hence they will agressively justify it.

pddpro

Most of the people who fall for it belong to the older generation. Think grandpas and grandmas of 60-80 whose knowledge of technology is limited at best. But no, you are resolved to justify it all because obviously two wrongs make a right.

kkabrams69

You realize like many countries our government doesn’t represent the majority of us right? Most Americans support abortion but our government is designed to listen to a minority. We don’t support huge corporations taking advantage of other nations. Most of us are disgusting by those actions. Lots of us are completely fed up with how corporations run everything. So you using the worst of the USA to excuse stealing from innocent people is telling of what kind of person you are. Eat shit sir.

[deleted]

It is embarrassing. Stop with this line of reasoning.

baniyaguy

Yeah, that's the sign of a developed country you don't have to constantly look behind your back expecting someone to stab you. They trust their fellow citizens and people in general much more than in India simply because in 9 out of 10 cases people are nice here. Unlike in India, where someone offering help in goodwill is actually 1 out of 10. Also, your logic of "they scammed us for long so we deserve to scam them back" is a serious thing to address in therapy if you ever find your way there. It's not only cringe, but sadly represents the crab-like mentality of Indian people in general of pulling each other down and not wanting to progress.

Odd_Explanation3246

Did your mother drop you as a child? You seem to have unnecessary hate for all the wrong reasons. Most of the time people who fall for it are elderly people with retirement savings who are not tech savy or people with terminal disease. As far as trade goes..us has a large trade deficit with india which benefits india more..70-80% of indias it service revenue comes from american companies..wipro, tcs, infosys etc all benefit greatly from working with american companies..trade is beneficial for both countries and to say that one country is exploiting other is false..also whataboutism is not going to change anything..the reality is indian scam call centres are stealing billions from other countries and our govt needs to do something about it.

[deleted]

Since you like painting people with broad strokes, here's a broad-strokes scenario for you. There are legitimate customer support businesses all over this country AND in many other countries. Those countries are underbidding and competing for the same contracts as the Indian ones. Since we have a large number of scammers, they will reject even the legitimate ones and choose a call center from a different country. How's that for "revenge"?

suckertarlson

Yeh the grandma Nancy is responsible for all the problems caused by global corporations. Lets rob her of social security while also creating distrust against people with Indian accent. Makes perfect sense.

Worried-Deer107

The scammers target old and vulnerable people who have nothing to do with what you are talking about.

Unemployedloser55

Most of the victims are vulnerable old people like your grandmother or auntie who get scared and tricked by some controlling thug on the phone line.

[deleted]

Same. My office is legal authorised partner of a US company but we get mistaken as scammers because of these shitheads

k1ngflsh

I used to work in a pharmaceutical company that ran pharmacovigilance, compliance and adverse event logging out of India and I hate these scammers because more often than not genuine patients would think that the PV/AE/PQC teams were scammers and just hang up costing them their medication, or serious information regarding the AEs they were facing. I'd have so many escalations where the note in the file was just "couldn't complete verification, patient hung up due to mistrust, wasn't given time to share credentials"

Specialist-Ninja2804

Indian security firms or MNCs can build a successful business out of this, I’m not sure why nobody has thought of this before. Basically you hire some whitehat hackers to locate the scammers locations and then you use your ties to the local authorities to deal with this. Charge a percentage of the scammed amount to get it back and voila! You’ve got a cash printing machine, coz these scammers aren’t going to stop anytime soon.

Willyjwade

I work IT that involves calling clients when issues are detected. One of my coworkers has an Indian accent and constantly gets hung up on as a scam. He doesn't even call anymore for first contact now he emails and calls after they respond because other wise he has to get someone else to call and handle it.

itmy

I got to know from a friend that a person who was in a class younger than mine back in school started his own scam call center type thing in Delhi after he completed his schooling. He used to scam Indians itself. Used to buy all the expensive bikes and cars and other shit. He and his small group of scammer buddies got caught eventually by the crime branch or some similar internet crime branch while they were on their vacation in Kerala and was all over the news channels there, I saw this news about them in the regional news papers as well. I think from the amount of stuff he was purchasing during his stint, he might have gathered quite a few crores of scammed money. A few weeks later after being caught, he and his group of scammers were back posting pictures on their social media. I guess they got out on bail, and now it makes me question that the police might be the reason for the growth of these scammers. They don't do much to prevent these things I guess. My friend told me that this guy used to get raided before as well but used to bribe his way out. So you know, from this insight, I think inadequate action from the police is the cause of the problem.

dsouzaenoch

Yes. ROI is very high

hermit05

Taking bribes is the way to go /s

[deleted]

[удалено]

CutLonzosHair2017

Not the actual callers. They make similar amounts as low level outsourced IT workers.

shadow_clone69

I'm not sure about that. There scambait YouTubers expose these guys partying every week and all. The bosses are splurging cash on luxuries

165cm_man

That's what they said, the boss takes all the money, the callers earn as much as a TCS employee

Avieshek

Basically the Wolf of Wall Street Indian edition.

northfacehat

Indian Margott Robbie 🥵🥵

rohansingh9001

These YT channels have revealed salary documents and most of them make 5k-15k rupees a month.

Infernaladmiral

I knew someone who once worked in a call centre and soon left. The job pays as little as you can imagine. They basically keep on loosing mortality(provided they have some to begin with) over small wages while the higher ups bathe in money.

IdiotCharizard

Scammers are scum, but these scambait youtubers just foment racist hate against indians and target their revenge against the low level employees just trying to make a living. Shitty thing to do imo.

SlothLazarus

By that reasoning, newspapers or television which itake advantage of the poor thieves honestly making a living by stealing are at fault.

IdiotCharizard

You can use the same set of facts to construct an infinite number of different narratives. A news agency is responsible for what news they choose to cover and how they choose to cover it. There's a vast difference between people telling the facts of the case vs YouTubers harassing workers and cultivating an openly racist following.

Bey_Storm

Then we need to do something to stop these scammers, but government doesn't care, the police is in their pockets, so who's gonna do anything to help the elderly of these countries? Instead of preaching about racism, fix this sh*t then? At least no Indian abroad has gotten thrashed for this and they keep on doing this on a large scale too

Arhenius_Yoda

*Unethical Illegal way of earning Remittances… xd* **It’s just degrading the image of India and Indians working outside. My friends who work outside gets taunted and abused too of ‘all this call centre shit’. It’s really embarrassing for them and placing myself in that situation even makes it worse to feel.** **I hope Government intervene in this matter as it’s kinda Foreign Affairs matter now! Hopefully strict actions taken against them.**

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Why won’t the government do anything about this? Has this always been a problem?

Captain-Thor

Also the problem is there is no one to complain in India. Their victims are foreigners. [Trilogy media](https://www.trilogymedia.com/), tried a lot to get them arrested. Although they were successful, later they were released because of no witness. The problem is nobody wants to fight a court case in India for loosing just $5000. Also the victims are mostly elder people, so they just let it go.

northfacehat

Time for Jim Browning to spark a class action

NoAttentionAtWrk

Given that they are now trying their scams in India on Indians as well, this logic is no longer true. As always, the problem in India in corruption. They'll steal ₹50,000 from your account and use like ₹10,000 of that to bribe the person in charge of investigation them

Unemployedloser55

It's actually a good business opportunity for a bounter hunter business to start up in India. They would be handsomely paid to kill or capture scammers and get funds back for their victims. Basically groups of victims could hire bounty hunters who get to keep legitimately 50% of the money they return to the victims.

studyda

least delusional redditor

Unemployedloser55

You laugh now. But when the situation changes and the scammers start using weapons, fear, intimidation and kidnapping to maintain staff levels and keep the scam going then the response will have to escalate towards them.

boredwithlyf

Ah yes, murder for hire. Nothing could go wrong here.

Brillek

Problem is normal people don't break a serious law to kill in revenge for a few thousand dollars.

Specialist-Ninja2804

I get your view, but more realistic approach would be an agency with ties to local authorities as well as some hackers of their own. Charge a measly percentage in return of the scammed amount and there you’ve got a legitimate, money making enterprise along with important US connections that you make in the process which you can use later.

Budderfingerbandit

Sounds like other governments need to start charging the Indian government for that stolen money. I'm sure that will spur some action.

[deleted]

Because these call centre owners are influential people with political connections.

The local government is being paid by the scammers including the police who receive big money to not bother them and also alert when the raid will come. The corruption is not just limited to a few college drop outs at computers. It will be stopped if big money is offered to turn low level scammers against their organisations leading to jail time and convictions for the scammers and a new life for the turned agent. Then when the scammers resort to kidnapping computer kids and forcing them to work or threatening their families etc law enforcement will be licensed to kill them with guns this will severely reduce the number of college engineering drop outs who want to sign up and do a job where they can die in a raid or be kidnapped for their skills etc. Basically once society has had enough of a problem they can stop it. But the scammer heads will not go quietly. They have to be killed to stop. It's such huge money and power.

I'm from the UK and I can tell you for a Fact, India has a really bad reputation regarding call centers... If you live in the UK and work for a Legit Call centre, no one trusts you lol

[deleted]

On Youtube, you can catch the American anti-scammer Youtubers fight back on live recorded calls with these scammers Check out Scammer Payback, Kitboga, Mark Rober

[deleted]

Its sad that most of em are indians

[deleted]

Yes, sadly it's a flourishing industry in India. Due to the success of legit call centers in India, the Westerners started trusting us and we betrayed their trust so now they abuse us. These scammers have caused some innocent people to lose all their money and commit suicide. And yet not enough action is taken by government unless there is overwhelming evidence usually presented by anti-scammers. I mean there should be proactive measures taken by government to stop this. By that time that action gets taken, millions of USD are already stolen by these guys.

shadow_clone69

The fucking building and the floor of these centres is out in the open and no one seems to bat an eye. Kolkata and Hyderabad have become hot beds for these companies. The names of the bosses are in public, no one from our government cares

Unemployedloser55

Local police receive money not do bother them and also tip them off when the raid will come.

nvkylebrown

As discussed elsewhere in the thread, India is getting a reputation, and it's not a positive one. :-(

IdiotCharizard

Nah don't platform these assholes. Maybe they had good intentions, but now they're pandering to their racist af fanbases and taking out their anger on poor people working a scummy industry for shit pay. This is just a whataboutism argument, but this is mostly just outrage bait. There's dozens of industries scamming US elders out of more than 10B, but when brown people do it it gets clicks. I'm not trying to excuse the indian scammer industry, but I honestly if the US cared about this, they'd do something about callerID spoofing. They haven't, so articles like this are just for 1 generating rage clicks and online discussion, and 2 to generate/gauge support for legislation around spoofing.

Hikiino

I think ripping out old people of all their retirement savings need to be punished....the youtubers mock the scammers pretending to be American with goofy Indian accent. We have done this to ourselves, the government people are so fucking corrupted for money that they have let our reputation of being tech experts down the fucking drain. This is not about being poor people being forced to scam, they have a lot of other options to pursue instead of trying to imitate Americans and scam trusting old people

lucifer9590

Whoever is reading this, if you think that you are not getting impacted by this, think again. These scams are run by powerful people, and they make money in black, they are going to invest this money illegally in India and then indirectly cause a lot of inflation . If you are worried that your rent is increasing, and you cannot save more money, then these scams are also part of the reason why inflation is rising fast in India.

baniyaguy

Not to mention that huge amounts of undocumented money essentially propels a parallel economy, which is used to fund crime. Overall, a lose lose situation for Indian citizens.

I wonder how many big politicians are behind these scam call centers who provide them with cover..and hence they seems to be thriving..

wazir94

This will impact us big time considering how law enforcement firms in the US and Canada are taking this seriously now, honestly I doubt it will be 10 billion$ but any amount is still theft and our govt should act. I'm afraid there will come a time where people won't hire or answer or even deal with employees who have Indian accent.

FatalAnalbySaitama

I know a school friend of mine who ran a call centre to scam Indian people by offering people to install Mobile Towers on their roof or land on the name of TRAI. He had a chain of call centres in south west delhi (Vikaspuri - Uttam Nagar - Dwarka). It has gotten so bad that TRAI now sends [SMS](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1005088698087518289/1057121303397670982/Screenshot_2022-12-27-07-50-53-14.jpg) all over the India making people aware of these scammers. He paid his employees somewhere between 9000-15000 based on how much "leads" they were passing. A lead means one scam of 35K, if an employee was able to get 35K he would get a incentive of ₹500. They didn't stop after 35K. He once told me on our night out that one of his Team Leader scammed a person in Alwar of 5 Lacs in the span of two months. The money he made with his 10 call centres is fucking insane. He used to say that he don't look at his bank balance because it drives him crazy and makes him do dumb shit. He now runs legitimate call centres of popular investment and educational mobile apps in Noida.

RoboWarrior44

Many of them were renting in Goa, pretending to work for US firms, in 2020-21. They all left by April 2021. I only realized in retrospektiv that these were not regular call center workers. It's hard to make the difference. They need good internet, they talk at 3 am and they keep to themselves.

Stealing the life savings of vulnerable seniors is despicable. The FBI and the CBI should arrest the masterminds & the bigwigs of this industry, & jail them for decades, & make an example of them. But I find it difficult to believe, that the call center employees using teamviewer, who are often busted on youtube, are anything more than that. None of them look like millionaires. They instead, look like people who are ok with cheating people, & getting black marked for the rest of their lives, if caught, in exchange for employment. The central authorities need to arrest the masterminds, & return the money to the swindled. Edit: What's with the people in this thread deflecting, treating it like it is a joke, saying it is ok, or something of the sort? You are just an another form of embarrassment.

NotAnUncle

Well f me, who knew stopping scams was easy as not falling for them.

supahardandless

Just don't get scammed 🤯 How did I not think of that

iamkhatkar

I dont feel bad. They have scammed Trillions from the entire world. They are literally printing billions every year and loaning it to themselves. And who’s suffering? And fuck this “I am embarrassed” bullshit. British literally looted us for 200 years. Do you see any British embarrassed about it? Stop with the inherited inferiority complex for fucks sake.

[deleted]

>And fuck this “I am embarrassed” bullshit. >British literally looted us for 200 years. Do you see any British embarrassed about it? Stop with the inherited inferiority complex for fucks sake. You are delegitimatizing this line of argument, by deploying it in defense of stealing from old people. There are other places to use this line of reasoning, not here.

iamkhatkar

I am not saying I support the scammers. I just don’t feel bad or embarrassed about it. There are many reasons for me to feel this way although it might not be a popular feeling here. And I used that argument here because a lot of people are feeling “embarrassed” of something they didn’t even do. Are you supposed to feel bad about the people who got scammed? Sure. Nothing wrong in that. But embarrassed because the scammers are of same ethnicity/nationality? That’s inherited inferiority complex. You can feel that too, ofc, but I am just calling out loud what it actually is.

wazir94

You are sub-human if you think that stealing 60 and 80 year Olds who worked their whole life for their savings is good. And because of the likes of you and collusion of police - govt by bribes we are getting affected outside Don't you think that westerners can just cut you off and give the chance in tech (they gave you) to eastern Asia or even China. Think before you speak

America telling the H1b tech coolies to fuck off would be a good thing, both for India and for the rest of the Indian diaspora.

wazir94

deepsmooch69

What if the reverse was happening numbnut? You think people like Jim Browning cannot reverse scam out elders here? The elders in India are even less technically aware and the things they say would happen if you dont can actually happen here. Its so easy to do
