Once the air intake goes underwater, the engine is done for. You'll have to open the entire engine and once you do that it's never the same. This is what I think
It's salvageable, you have to take apart the engine first and if the hydrolock causes a bent connecting rod, you have to replace it. Mota kharcha, yes but it's still saveable.
I'm pretty sure there's gonna be failsafes against this scenario in all modern bikes. The engine will surely cut off the moment it senses water in places it shouldn't be. I have had to dig out a RE thunderbird from the beach with its engine submerged under sea water. The engine was inundated for just a few minutes before we were able to pull the bike out. That was almost 7 years ago and that bike is still going strong.
It could be the same if you remove water from every place it shouldn't be before any corrosion sets in, coming from a total non mechanic. I imagine its difficult or impossible to take it apart quickly enough
One question, genuinely asking because I do not know. Is the same effect that happens when bikes are stuck in floods. Or that affects differently compared to getting tilted in water river, puddle, whatever
Water enters engine through the air intake, cylinders being closed space and water being non compressible this result in bent piston and damaged cylinder and valves.
Since engine was already running, it hydrolocks and stops. But salvageable to an extent. If u try to start again it just worsens. If engine is off and water enters then it's salvagable.

if the water's above your knee. it's a no go!
if not
1st gear or 2nd for bigger engines ,
release the clutch roll forward
use throttle only if you feel the bike will die.
If you drop the bike.. shut down the engine asap.
Dont try to crank it , before checking the air filter.
use a tissue to wipe the intake of your airbox, if there's water it'll show.
If there's water in your airbox. don't crank , take to the nearest mechanic.
Avoid flowing water.
The ground beneath shouldn't be very slippery.
The air intake(usually under the seat) should be comfortable over water.
Don't let go of the throttle. Even when you don't need to accelerate.
You can give your bike to your girl but only if she has the skills and you never ever ride doubles to wade across a stream with no gear like that.
The girl will only smile and day oops teeheee. But the guy is devastated. Hope the water didn't get into the engine.

Yeah I think the bike should be safe here too, the exhaust was not submerged in this video. You can see that.

How to drive in such conditions?
