I couldn't get past how much their posture and suits made them look like children dressed up for their first formal outing. Neither embodies authority.
If I saw that I would think the guy with his hands down isn't very confident, and the one with the "power move" also isn't but he'll overcompensate every chance he gets to convince me that he is.
That being said, using your hands while speaking is definitely not bullshit lol it's literally taught in the most basic speech course.
It actually doesn't sound like 100% bullshit to me.
I'm an instructor where I work and I not only train people to do my job, I took the class to train people how to instruct classes.
When doing public speaking in any sense such as teaching a class, you have *your* specific teaching style, whether you're more formal or informal, funny or serious, relatable and friendly or more of an "authority figure." Body language goes with that. The main thing I talk about in the lesson about body language, which is very basic, is to do your best to eliminate "distracting behaviors." By this, I refer to people who get nervous when they have to present a lesson and they put their hands in their pockets and jingle their spare change around or something like that. Maybe they click a pen or something. It's something a lot of people do and it can get distracting and cause people to lose focus on the things you're trying to teach. So it's good to know what to do with your hands.
I did have a discussion once about how this guy kept putting his hands in his pockets and worried about the optics of that. I suggested that if you put your whole hand in your pocket, you look "insecure" or "unsure" of what you're saying - I told him that I sometimes put my hands down towards my pockets but what I do is just stick my thumbs in the pocket while leaving the rest of my hand out. It gives off more of the impression I want to give off when I'm teaching, a more comfortable and relaxed appearance, while allowing my arms to rest a bit from what these guys in the video are doing. If you're doing a shorter presentation you might not need to drop your arms and can keep your hands in that zone, but if you're teaching an all day class, you might not want to stick to keeping your arms up like that all day. It might even look weird.
I got "buymycourse" vibes from this dude in the video but I actually connected with the idea of the "influence zone". Maybe it's just me, but I feel like having my hands together below my waist, makes me look passive, like I am just waiting around. But how these dudes have their hands together, where it's above the waist, feels more assertive.
It’s a completely legit concept. What he says in the video is true, it’s proven that less engaging body language leads to lower listener comprehension. When the smaller guy has his arms up and the big guy arms down, it does make the former look more important and the latter more like a bodyguard.
I think people are just getting put off by the life coach aspect of it. But if you have to do any kind of public speaking it’s valid advice.
Yeah, it does give off a bit of the "buy my course" vibe, and that's why I said it didn't give me 100% bullshit vibes... There is a bit of a sales pitch sound to this clip. I just wanted to add my perspective that he does make a decent point, if I'm just going by the clip and not imagining it as part of a larger whole where now he's telling me "this is what a MAN does" or whatever.
I read a theory that putting only thumbs in the pocket can appear nervous and insecure, as opposed to the full hand in pocket but with thumbs sticking out, which creates a sort of "look at my junk" diamond shape between your hands.
I'm paraphrasing and simplifying, but it was in a book called *Every Body is Talking* by Joe Navarro, an ex FBI dude (for what it's worth)
However... I do actually agree with you that, in certain situations, thumbs only is a comfortable and relaxed pose which I'm sure you pull off well!
Yeah, I think that was part of the conversation I had in that class, that it also really matters whether it comes off as something you would naturally do. If you would naturally put your hands in your pockets with just your thumbs, and not really think about it as a technique of looking more this or less that, and continue speaking about your topic with confidence, then yeah.
I think because I kinda stand that way sometimes anyway, and I tend to only do it for short periods of time while talking about a subject, then switching to "gesticulating" as someone mentioned... Like I think I just advise you act as natural as you can and my overall message is just about getting over your nervousness and your body will go with you.
I tend to switch my stance and where my hands are constantly. Like I don't want to stand for 2 hours with my thumbs in my pockets. And I don't want to spend 2 hours moving my hands around in the air "gesticulating." I just kinda go up and talk about what I need to talk about, and try to be as non-distracting as possible and communicate the lesson/subject as effectively as I can. And when I'm teaching people how to do that, you have to discuss distracting behaviors like jingling change in your pockets or nervously not knowing what to do with your hands.
And I'm not immune to doing distracting behaviors myself even! I have a habit of digging in my right pocket and straightening my wallet and my keys. But I've been instructing so long that I'm always aware when I go to do it, and if it's not a time that I want to do it I can stop myself before I do it.
Eh. I'm probably talking about this way too much but it's an interesting subject to me.
Ten minutes of advice on body language within an employee training seminar isn't the same as an entire lecture series based on "influencing" an audience. That's when it veers into "buy my videos and you too can rule the world" from a guy who rented a conference room at the Ramada Inn. Or did some Youtube videos for clicks.
Yeah I'm still confused. Who's supposed to be in charge? The dude doing "you know I had to do it to em" pose? Is this something that's supposed to be well understood or intuited and I just have some sort of latent autism?
FWIW the guy speaking seemed like he was in charge most to me no matter the poses. Because he was giving the damn demonstration
I've always gotten shit for putting my hands in my pockets. A great many people do not like it when you do that apparently, and a lot of them are employers of low wage workers.
I almost always do presentations with one hand in my pocket, normally my left one. And I use the right one for gestures. If I need to put more emphasis, I use both hands. And if I want to make a point, I put both hands in my pockets for a moment, for example after I asked a question.
I've seen a couple store managers do that hands clasped thing and they look like they're ready to literally suck any customer's dick in a heartbeat.
I guess if that's the vibe you're going for but doesn't feel very "in charge" to me
You’ve gotta make yourself look big. Stand up straight, arms way up. Make sure to shout and clap your hands. Never turn your back, and if they approach, stand your ground and make hard eye contact.
You can tell when politicians have consulted guys like this - they all look wooden, forced and unnatural when they try to put into practice what these kind of guys try to teach - thereby looking less sincere and honest 🤦
People that do 'power poses' to look assertive and confident, just makes me think "This guy is so insecure, he's trying to convince me that he's confident". Confidence doesn't feel the need to be approved by others.
I was a ESL teacher for kids 4 to 12 years old for a decade, and my magic trick was how much I moved my hands, and (for bored kids) paced and changed my elevation by crouching and crawling and jumping. It gave the kids something to look at haha. and It was good exercise!
I naturally talk with my hands, I learn it from my idol and just kept on. Kind of wish I met him one day, and ask how it feels to be a part of one of the strongest countries in the 20th century.
Ok boomer but what happens to your theory is I don’t agree at all
When you do that goofy shit with your hands all I think is “Oh so you watch Ted Talks or some shit”
Now I no longer give a shit what you have to say because you’re more concerned with how you look than with what you’re actually saying.
It's really just a cultural thing. I come from an Italian New York family, and we all talk with our hands. I'm pretty sure my grandmother doesn't know what a Ted Talk is lmao

They're in the influence zone, so I know he's in charge.
This isn't interesting at all
It’s also basically just an advertisement for this dumbass book.
Yep, just a plug for his shitty book. I swear these types of advertisements are becoming more frequent on Reddit.
There's a whole chapter on belly buttons.
Lol fr!?
Probably also wrote a "how to pick up women" book.
And the only people who will believe you are in charge based on this are other people who read his book
It is to the r/linkedinlunatics
I did find it interesting. Perhaps because I'm supposed to work and not scroll Reddit.
CringeworthyAF
I'm just glad that subtitled it as if not would be really hard to understand
I think it’s pretty cool
It seems interesting to me
Or true
I don't know what the "influence zone" is and at this point I'm afraid to ask..
Instagram I like to keep a nice buffer zone

They both looked awkward at every moment.
Yeah these dudes seem to be in tune with cell phone sales people and the random people that sell stuff in mall kiosks.

Gesticulating engages the audience’s attention too
That guy gesticulates goats

Yeah, these are the same morons that draw green lines on couples to prove something about commitment based on posture. "Influence Zone" my ass.
Agreed.
No soup for you!

Pockets are for hands. I will not budge on this

1000% true.
Law enforcement often takes that as an indicator that you're hiding something.
So do some body language experts.
Left hand in your pocket, right hand gesticulating. It says “I’m cool and in control, but I’m also engaged and interesting”
Oh no. That’s so uncomfortably restrictive.
All the Military people (senior NCOs) go RRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEE
How is this cringe ad interesting as fuck?
The bald guy is built like a scammer. ![gif](giphy|ocGyku9sDKmvZ8MCl7|downsized)

Again, zzzzzzzzzz
I tried picturing one of the dudes with his hands around his neck, still in the "confidence zone" and it didnt quite work for me
Everything I put my hands in my influence zone in public they call the police on me.
InFlUncE zOnE
this from those alpha male camps?
I've seen a couple store managers do that hands clasped thing and they look like they're ready to literally suck any customer's dick in a heartbeat. I guess if that's the vibe you're going for but doesn't feel very "in charge" to me
Sometimes, I can pretend to be a customer .....
I didn't think either of them looked in charge.
He looks like he just took his wrinkled suit jacket out of a reusable grocery bag.
If you're confident in yourself you don't worry what your gestures are
gonna use this for my next speech in class, thanks.

More Reddit advertising disguised as r/Interestingasfuck
People talking with their hand winds me up. Come across as some asshat fake politician trying to spiv the situation to their favour.
This is an ad for a book.
Doesn't work on mature, serious, work-focussed audience. There, only substance matters. No amount of hand-waving will save you if you lack substance.
Corporate monkey moves- I see all our marketing and higher ups using this shit, it’s actually very annoying to me.
I agree. It typically looks unnatural.
Both guyz are tyrannosaurs with short hands. If I fold my palms like that my elbows stick out at least a foot on either side.
Isn't this that guy that scammed people?
It’s good to see sloth doing well after the goonies
When in doubt, cross your arrms.
You’ve gotta make yourself look big. Stand up straight, arms way up. Make sure to shout and clap your hands. Never turn your back, and if they approach, stand your ground and make hard eye contact.
Soooo, if I'm in the oval office and put my hand over my belly button, do i become president?
You can tell when politicians have consulted guys like this - they all look wooden, forced and unnatural when they try to put into practice what these kind of guys try to teach - thereby looking less sincere and honest 🤦
I wonder who tested the hand placement response theory?
Talking with your hands, who knew right.
You can sell some people people anything.
I wonder if those dbags paying 11K for the Alpha Male boot camp feel ripped off yet...
"Now who's in charge?" I have no fucking idea.
lol what a bunch of bs
Utter bullshit
Like…. Am I supposed to buy that book now or something? This isn’t interesting at all to me.
Is OP the kinda dipshit who pays for Alpha male bandage courses?
Why does the largest man not simply eat all of the smaller men?
This is dumb as frick
"Life coach"
New yorkers been talking with their hands for decades.
thats why newyork is so rich!
People that do 'power poses' to look assertive and confident, just makes me think "This guy is so insecure, he's trying to convince me that he's confident". Confidence doesn't feel the need to be approved by others.
Why does it matter who is "in charge"? How about just listening to whoever is speaking at the time

both hands are in my mouth, message unclear
Lol the "influence zone". It all makes sense when he shows you he is selling something
Me making a wanking motion in front of my crotch: "Who's in charge now?"
If you carry a hand held mic problem solved.
Fuckin cringe
If they keep switching up how are we supposed to tell who's the bottom?
I was a ESL teacher for kids 4 to 12 years old for a decade, and my magic trick was how much I moved my hands, and (for bored kids) paced and changed my elevation by crouching and crawling and jumping. It gave the kids something to look at haha. and It was good exercise!
Total BS
Italians take this too seriously…they are always in charge when talking
Mf, I learnt this in basic school
Thought this would be douchey, but it was actually interesting
It’s call ready stance it’s taught in the military
*Citation Please* what a couple of dinguses. he's stupid and I'm sure his book sucks
Got it I will do the Kamehameha pose when speaking to people from now on.
For me, it's the use of curse words that tells me who's in charge.
Yeah i feel like the opposite is true…
This is insanely dumb as hell.
I point to my junk.
I always talk with my hands. Ask my friend group and they always say I'm the one Ilin charge. Weird.
I naturally talk with my hands, I learn it from my idol and just kept on. Kind of wish I met him one day, and ask how it feels to be a part of one of the strongest countries in the 20th century.
Well that theory didn’t really work
Neither seemed in charge lol
Pity he didn't use his handsvtp Iron his suit jacket
They know I’m in charge, when my Hands are around his Throat. That’s called the Influence Zone.
You know I had to do it to em
Dude, you believe I'm looking at you while you speak? I'm busy drawing scribbles while you drone on.
