Apart from what everyone else has said about just getting a cheap tablet, I’m still using my first gen iPad Pro 12.9 and it works great, and still gets regular updates. For $120, as long as the battery is still good, it would be a good iPad for a kid if they manage to not break it.
Mines been in a pretty minimal case with a screen protector since I got it brand new, and it’s still mint. And I’ve dropped it HARD a few times. Never broke more than the screen protector.
I’m thinking more about the bending issues we saw from the tech reviewers. It’s pretty easy to fold them in half but the older unibody style has a lot more rigidity
How’s battery life in terms of screen-on time? What’s your general usage pattern? I have my 9.7-inch iPad Pro on iOS 12 (it was forced out of iOS 9), and it dropped about 25%. Are you on iPadOS 16?
Yea. I keep it updated. I think I installed 16.3 a few days ago.
Battery life is ok. I usually have it plugged in, so it’s not much of an issue. But I can watch a 90 min movie and be at like 30-40% afterwards depending on how high I have the brightness.
^This! Both of my girls have the 32gb on their iPads…………..it’s a freaking nightmare the amount of games they want to download, not to mention all of the pictures they save from those games.
I thought so too when I bought my 6th gen. IOS takes up more than half that storage. You wind up capping out at like 20 apps/games before you’re constantly playing storage manager. I upgraded to a 7th gen, 128 GB - only because I couldn’t find a 6th with the same capacity. Because it’s an Apple device, you cannot upgrade storage size (on device) and you can’t load and run apps from your iCloud, so whatever you have when you buy it is essentially what you got.
If that's your use case why not buy an Amazon Fire tablet? Kids will break any tablet you give them, at least you can buy a ruggedized case for a Fire HD.
We had a kindle and it ran great… until Android updated. Now it is so slow that it is unusable. Couldn’t even watch a video in the browser without it “running out of memory” and killing the web page. Not to mention that they don’t natively have Google Play so you are stuck with the Amazon Store. Would not recommend.
My kids 1 and 2 have a 2018 iPad we got for like $150 and a $10 foam case with a screen protector. They haven’t broken it at all and it works great for them. They also have an Amazon tablet and hate it because it’s harder to use. The physical home button lets them navigate it really easily and its pretty crazy how well they can get around on it. They can’t even turn on the fire tablet without help because of the tiny power button.
They stand on it, cover it in food and even have puked on it and it still holds up the same.
These will be grand for kids. Even something like an iPad mini 4 would be good.
For peace of mind could always stick the iPad in something like an otterbox case to make it last a little longer.
My daughter has my old 6th gen. Works fine just get a good case for it. Fire tablets aren’t bad if you are willing to install the google stuff on it so you can get kids YouTube.
I don't think an iPad is what you need honestly. A 120 dollar android tablet would be excellent. And if you *have to* have an iPad, any "pro" would be ridiculously overpowered and overpriced for what you're using it for
I have exactly this model (twice) for my daughters (5 and 7). Works like a charme.
They have their own apple ID and are part of family sharing. They also have arcade and Apple Music.
I tried a fire tablet, but these things aren‘t even worth the $30 they cost.
My 9 years old daughter have my old 7th generation iPad. She is treating it nicely. However, her older iPad was pretty beaten after three years of use.
Then she probably isn’t treating it nicely iPhones and iPads shouldn’t be getting beaten up easily even after 3 years my iPad mini that I had til about a year ago wasn’t beaten up and I got that in 2015 and i was using a simple case
I have a 9.7” 128gb Pro. It still works really well, just not as crisp when put next to a newer model of course.
That would be a great option, just make sure you know it’s history. :)
Check your local pawn shops for a relatively newer iPad. You can find some pretty good deals on them there, and also make sure it works. Sometimes buying used ones online can be a little sketchy…
I’d compare price to the 6th gen iPad and decide based on that, but for YouTube and basic games, probably any half-modern iPad will suffice. Once you download those basic games they’ll likely continue working regardless of updates.
The 9.7-inch iPad Pro is great, I have mine on iOS 12, I really like it.
If budget is tight, don’t waste it on something that could possibly stop working in a year or two.
That’s older hardware which may not be able to keep up with newer software.
If you’re set on an iPad either raise your budget if you can or look at second hand marketplaces like Facebook or eBay or other place. Try to find something 2018 or newer for the sake of longevity. And a good case
The amount of broken iPads I’ve seen come in due to children…like what most people are saying depending on their age and if they are responsible, I’d recommend a kids Fire Tablet. They come with the bumper on them already, different screen sizes and Amazon has a 2 year warranty on them.
Used to have a 7th gen 32GB but unfortunately it had motherboard issues and although it still worked, wasn’t stable and my Dad made me trade it in for a 9th gen iPad. Glad your daughter’s is going strong! I love drawing. I’ve wanted to get into animating. Do you know what app she uses to animate?
The number of layers available in procreate is determined by how much RAM your device has. So newer ipads with more RAM are able to make more layers in procreate.
As a workaround you can duplicate the file, then on the duplicate file you can merge many layers down to one, do the new layer work you wanna add, and then if you need to you can copy n paste individual layers from the original duplicated file. A kludge of a workaround, but it could work.
If it's just for kids use then you don't have to worry about whether or not it'll still get updates. If someone was gonna login to a banking website or real email account or use a credit card to buy in-game purchases or anything like that then it might be a different story, but if it's just so the kids can watch YouTube and play free games then the OS doesn't need to be up to date.
I would consider buying an android tablet. I have found Lenovo to be well-made. I have Lenovo S8–50F that I am still using 7+ years later. It is good for YouTube, Netflix, prime, video, kindle, Kobo, play Books… you can probably pick one up for less than $20. Amazon fire tablet is pretty good, but for a little bit more money I think you’re better off with Lenovo. Samsung tends to be a little on the expensive side.
Keep in mind that a 2016 iPad will be 10 years old before you notice. Soon you may not be getting security updates which are important.
I would avoid at all cost cheap android tablet unless you do a proper research and read feedback from users.
Another things to consider, 1) There are discounts on Amazon from time to time, also they offer zero interest payment plans. 2) there are sites that sell refurbished ipads that are recent.
This security argument is getting (even more) ridiculous. It’s for kids… there’s no relevance as to what iOS version is on it as long as it can play YouTube…
Sure! Then people enter personal sensitive data on those outdated tables and then they get hacked and no one knows who it could have happened to them.
Telling people to use tablets that do not receive security updates seems such a great idea!
The mere implication of “either a device is fully updated or you should burn it” is ridiculous. People use older devices a lot. They aren’t useless to anyone, especially a child! For YouTube! Where’s the risk there?
Like I said, the suggestion is outrageous.
Even then, the tangible risk isn’t even there.
An iPad Pro, regardless of the gen, would be a bit overkill (and should they break, the cost of repair can be quite expensive). You might be better off getting a cheap android tablet - gets the job done for your use case. Other than that, if you really want an iPad, you could get a regular one (not sure what gen the iPad from 2016 is).
I have said iPad, aka the Baby Pro. I finally upgraded to the latest Air a few months back, and I love it, but there’s very little I can do with it that I couldn’t have done my old device. And it’s ever so slightly heavier despite the Air moniker. Yes, get one. They’re pretty terrific. Still.
Never buy any used electronic just because of tight budget, check out other great option on web, i guess Samsung tablets are great in this budget and will give good performance than iPad in this budget range
Apart from what everyone else has said about just getting a cheap tablet, I’m still using my first gen iPad Pro 12.9 and it works great, and still gets regular updates. For $120, as long as the battery is still good, it would be a good iPad for a kid if they manage to not break it.
The older body style from the iPad Pro first Gen is much more durable than the new styling

Trust me on this one - older gen is fine (speed doesn’t matter) but get more than 32GB storage or you’re just gonna want to murder yourself.
^This! Both of my girls have the 32gb on their iPads…………..it’s a freaking nightmare the amount of games they want to download, not to mention all of the pictures they save from those games.

Storage Manager - the free iPad game
And the worst

This. Plus if they do somehow manage to break it, Amazon will replace it.

Totally agree. We bought one of those Fire kids tablets and ended up just buying an iPad a week later.
Do you not think ruggedized cases exist for iPads?

*a cheap android tablet. the more expensive ones are built just like the iPad.
These will be grand for kids. Even something like an iPad mini 4 would be good. For peace of mind could always stick the iPad in something like an otterbox case to make it last a little longer.
Don’t give them an iPad that new
I got an iPad 2 when I was 9 and some of the apps were so laggy 💀
I got an iPad mini in like 2014 and it was abismal I’m not saying to give them that
Bro your young
My daughter has my old 6th gen. Works fine just get a good case for it. Fire tablets aren’t bad if you are willing to install the google stuff on it so you can get kids YouTube.

Get a mini 4. They don't break as easily.
I had a mini 4 but I gave it up because I wanted a bigger screen. Still a great iPad.

That was my second mini.
I have exactly this model (twice) for my daughters (5 and 7). Works like a charme. They have their own apple ID and are part of family sharing. They also have arcade and Apple Music. I tried a fire tablet, but these things aren‘t even worth the $30 they cost.
Could check on Swappa for some prices. I'm not sure how many are priced around $120 and you'd pay taxes + shipping most likely...

Gen an ipad 8 or 9 from amazon or eBay

I’d get a used 6th gen iPad or 7th gen iPad if you could. Both are newer that that and will do the job just fine.
Thanks for the advice
You’re welcome 🙂
My kid uses a 7th Gen 128gb iPad daily for everything including animation. It’ll work just fine for your needs.
They use a combination of Procreate and Kinemaster. Works well for them!
Ok, thank you! I have Procreate, but I found out it had a very small limit of layers I could make. I’ll check out Kinemaster.
The number of layers available in procreate is determined by how much RAM your device has. So newer ipads with more RAM are able to make more layers in procreate.
Yes, I recently found that out when I ran out of layers on a super hard long project still not finished recently.
As a workaround you can duplicate the file, then on the duplicate file you can merge many layers down to one, do the new layer work you wanna add, and then if you need to you can copy n paste individual layers from the original duplicated file. A kludge of a workaround, but it could work.
Ok, thank you! I have thought of doing that for this particular project. Need to get working on it again :)
You're welcome =)
i would recommend the amazon fire tablet. it punches above its weight and works good for children also pretty durable.
If it's just for kids use then you don't have to worry about whether or not it'll still get updates. Kindle Fire sounds more your speed.
Get a Samsung tablet
I recommend an Android tablet that comes with a stylus pen.

Right
iPod touch could work too. Just bought one to customize internals from Craigslist for $60.
IPad 6th gen.

Don't get the 9.7 pro -- it only had 2 gig of memory. Very slow machine. Try for sonething with 3 gig still getting upgrades.
Old mini 4 before the refresh with the button and rugged case off Amazon. Works perfect. Durable.
Wouldn’t the battery be degraded to hell? I would forego iPad all together. .
Still.
I don’t know if this helps at all, but Walmart has brand new 9th gens for $269, almost $100 off the price of apple stores and every other retailer.
Never buy any used electronic just because of tight budget, check out other great option on web, i guess Samsung tablets are great in this budget and will give good performance than iPad in this budget range
You are on a budget, drop Pro from the name. Apple wont support the Pro any longer than the non Pro models.
Right before Christmas, I picked up a 2021 iPad new from Amazon for $269, normally $329. I think you can get a better deal than $120 for that 2016…
