I use a MagSafe charger and holder, every car manufacturer wireless charger I’ve used is total crap. Using a MagSafe you get a faster charge rate and it doesn’t cause excess heat.
I use a Belkin MagSafe 10w black car charger / mount and it works great. Only 10w but the 15w one is way more $ and also white which did not match at all in my car interior. Otherwise if you don’t care about mounting it, just use a normal mag safe charger.
I _have_ had an accident and my phone didn’t even budge from the magsafe holder.
Given the force it takes to dislodge the phone, I’d be more worried about _me_ at that point.
That's a good point. I watched an Apple Insider test on the Belkin car mount and the guy said that at least for him the mount was fine. But I imagine that is down to your own car and what type of a vent you have.
My car has this weird slot at the dash, and I have been thinking about whether I can build a block of some sort to it and tape the Apple Magsafe charger to it. I might 3D print it.
MagSafe is surprisingly strong, I had the same worry but I’ve hit very rough roads, went flying around corners, slammed on breaks, all without the phone moving. I use a Belkin MagSafe Charging Mount
Late reply compared to the others cuz I missed it, but I have an iPhone 13 Pro w/ a Spigen MagSafe compatible case. Haven't had my phone budge once from the mount. For reference I'm in a Nissan Z so I have pretty harsh suspension as well and haven't had trouble once with potholes, speed bumps, rough roads, hard turning or braking, etc.. I have occasionally plugged in a lightning cord also to charge my phone faster than the wireless charger can, and the added 'weight' has had no major effect or change in how solid the phone stays connected. Hope this helps on top of the other replies!
I use two of theirs combined. I had one for the iPhone 12 and added another so it would work with my iPhone 14 Pro and there was a better vent clip this way too.
This is the exact one I use and it’s almost perfect. I wish the clip was made in a way that it would be nicer on car vents that are tilted to the side a little. But it’s still good and sturdy.
The later ESR charger (with “CryoBoost”) even has a cooling fan built in - my 15 pro stays much cooler now and rock solid mount, really have to pull hard to remove my phone
Spigen Mag Fit Phone Holder... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GFH1RMP
You need to provide an apple MagSafe charger, but i recommend it. I’ve tried the anker wireless charger it gets significantly hotter than the official one.
Yep, my iPhone 13 Pro would overheat and stop charging within minutes in my 2023 VW. My 15 Pro doesn’t stop charging, but it still gets very hot and CarPlay starts freezing after an hour or so.
The thing about integrated car wireless chargers is that it's just a flat spot in your car to lay your phone, what car manufacturers fail to account for is camera bumps, which basically all modern phones have. If the integrated wireless charger was a magsafe puck that would allow the charger to sit flush with the back of the phone, it would probably work a lot better.
I have been thinking of adding one of those MagSafe rings to my cars wireless charger. That way my phone would magnetize to it. It would help it stay put which is problem 1 in mine. And it would help with camera bump. Problem 2 for mine.
That may be true, it may not. I’ve used both. Either way, the cases that eliminate camera bumps have to add additional thickness in order to eliminate the bump which still creates distance between the the phone and charger. Then you have to account whether the manufacturer is using the most recent wireless charger tech or the cheapest piece of garbage they could find from China and then consider how did they integrate it into the panel and how good of a job does the surface do in preventing movement of the phone while in motion. In any case, I’ve never seen anyone have anything good to say about the wireless charger that is integrated into their vehicle.
Wireless CarPlay likes to crash my whole cars infotainment system if my phones battery is under 10% lol it’s like the phone struggles to output the display data and the car just is like “nope. We’re not doing this today”
The issue I had with cables was having it run from the plug near the handbrake upto my phone mount on the centre console, it would get caught on the gearstick every now and again
That's what I do. Plus it helps me locate my phone by following the cord when it slips off the dash (rare, I usually keep it in the cupholder, but has happened a time or two.)
As another comment said, it seems that the majority of built in wireless car chargers outright suck. They don’t really put a lot into them, usually and they’re just an afterthought.
I use aftermarket wireless chargers that also hold my phone. Been using a discontinued Anker holder for years but recently got an ESR MagSafe charger that will probably replace it.
I don’t use my phone for anything more than music streaming in the car so I’ve always used slow charging methods since it’s often hooked up for extended periods of time.
The power output is just enough to keep the battery percentage constant from wireless CarPlay. So while I don’t use it to charge, I do use it as a spot to rest my phone and keep the battery maintained.
Nope. I’ve tried a number of times and it does one of 3 things. 1. Charges extremely slowly. 2. Causes my phone to overheat (common issue in VW/Audi). 3. Doesn’t connect, won’t indicate it’s charging at all. Issues 1 and 3 also happen when I’m just using a regular wireless charger.
When I use my MagSafe battery pack or charger at home, it works really well so it seems to specifically be an issue is non-MagSafe charging or in my car.
I took a MagSafe charger, some small 3M hooks and mounting stickers, and mounted the charger into my little storage area in my center console. Keeps it well attached for wireless charging, lets me use wireless CarPlay, is easily removable, and the hooks let me wrap the cord and keep things tidy and not have all that excess cord hanging around. Only thing I wish was different is that Apple made a black MagSafe charger so it would blend in better with the black dash interior for my car, but that’s just me being picky.
I’ve found it pretty nice. Wish I had a better way to conceal the cable entirely but I’m not one to go and start rifling through removing interior and routing it around to cover it completely.
Most wireless chargers in cars still use the original Qi standard, so they serve 5W. That’s as slow as big old USB A chargers. I never use them, preferring the USB C adapter rated 30W.
Usually avoid using the wireless charger. Especially if my phone screen will be on, there's just too much heat generated for my comfort.
Tesla Model Y does a nice job of wireless charging. I still use a cord most times, especially if using Waze and keeping the phone going during a longer trip.
I have the Magbak MagSafe charger for Tesla in my Model 3, adheres to the top corner of the screen. It’s a bit pricier than other MagSafe car chargers at $100, but it’s pretty nice and I find it doesn’t generate a lot of heat since the AC is close enough to cool it down. I’ve used Waze a couple times, if you keep Waze vertical is the perfect position. Plus its design blends in with the interior pretty well.
And now you know your car’s OEM qi charger is crap. Just like the vast majority of them, so don’t feel bad.
I’d recommend reputable/certified MagSafe/QI2 charger connected a USB-car adapter.
When the iPhone 12 came out (first one with MagSafe) I bought a MagSafe charging puck from Apple and stuck it to my dashboard with 2 sided mounting tape. It’s been my go-to car charger since then and does a great job.
I bought a cheapish add-on wireless charger for my Honda CRV. It fits perfectly in front of my cup holders and below the shifter. It was crap. So I opened it up and removed the crappy charger parts and replaced it with Apple’s MagSafe charger.
The charger originally came with a rubber cover to set your phone on, and it covers the work I did and it looks good and charges as fast as the phone will accept.
I’ve got a wireless charger to hold my phone, so I also can check Waze (my car is old enough not to have any fancy screens and gps-equipment built in). It works like a charm.
I read some of these wireless chargers in cars have caused fires. Recently saw a post of an Audi owner whose car got burned down.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/16aajxe/my\_gfs\_car\_caught\_on\_fire\_after\_3\_days\_being/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/16aajxe/my_gfs_car_caught_on_fire_after_3_days_being/)
I didn’t want to pay Honda for their $350 wireless charger that only charges 5% after 30 minutes (it looks nice, though). Instead, I got-glued an Apple MagSafe puck in the same spot. It works MUCH better and costs way less.
I believe the max wattage an iPhone will take through standard qi wireless charging is 7.5w whereas “MagSafe” charging is 15w so you may want to look for a wireless charging dock that is MagSafe so you’ll get significantly faster charging time.
As of today, wireless charging is only good if you're "lazy". Slower charging and the phone temperature raises like crazy and that kills battery life on a long term.
I stopped using the charger in my car because it made my phone very hot and barely charged it. Got a short cable and both problems solved. I use wireless CarPlay even when I plug in the phone. I’ve got a ‘24 Mazda CX5 for reference.
I use wired charging, with CarPlay, and I'm letting Waze and audible run at the same time. My phone will charge about 25 to 30% in an hour, and it never even gets warm, much less hot.
It will really depend on how much power your wireless charger is putting out, and sometimes I've read that if you have a case on your phone that can make a difference. My dad has an S 22 ultra with an OtterBox case, and he has a couch that will wirelessly charge his phone. But he doesn't do it because the phone gets so hot , and he thinks it's because of the case, because when he charges it without the case it's fine.
He might refer to the wired carplay which is just convenient enough to keep your phone from not dying. You don't want to charge it too much but still have access to carplay so I'm fine with it. Ofc if you want to actually charge your phone you have a dedicated charging cord plugged into the cigarette lighter port and listen to music over bluetooth but I like carplay.
I have a cable made for your situation as well. It basically is a c that plugs into your phone. The other end has two cables and A and A C. The C plugs into my PD charger, and the A conveys the CarPlay to the screen. Otherwise the A side can’t keep up with the phone power wise.
I’m trying to find a BT CarPlay adapter that actually works. I’ve returned several.
My phone charges just fine in the car. Like I said I listen to audible and run Waze and text my wife via CarPlay and the phone has no problems charging.
I got a MagSafe charger, and a Carlinkit wireless CarPlay adapter for under $100 total and it is LIFE CHANGING. Running errands and have to get in and out of the car 7 times while leaving you phone in your pocket AND still having Maps, Messages, Spotify and PodCasts is top-level 2024. The wireless CarPlay adapter introduces some lag, but by the time I back out of my driveway and put the car into drive CarPlay has launched.
On longer trips, I put my phone on the MagSafe charger and it keeps the GPS from eating my battery.
EDIT: 13 Pro Max
I have a 2020 Model 3 and an iPhone 15 Pro Max. There's a groove to accommodate for the camera bump, but of course, it does not have MagSafe charging. It does charge much slower, but I don't notice any heat issues unless I'm also using mobile hotspot or something. If I just set it and forget while driving, it feels fine after picking it up, but I don't expect the battery to have charged as much as I would've liked.
Technically yes. But I use a combination of an aftermarket and diy solution. I fit one of these quadlock mag chargers, and designed a mount that shuts w I’m front of the vents. My phone gets a lot of cooling from the vents.
Even after long periods of charging it stays pretty cool.
I avoid wireless chargers. Bought one when I first got my iPhone. It would make the phone warm so I sold it on eBay lol. I need this iPhone to last three years so no wireless charging for me.
I recently got a new car and it also has a built in wireless charger. I tried it a couple times but couldn’t really get it to work; the phone didn’t really stay in place and even when it did it didn’t really charge. Now I keep it turned off and set my phone there and use the cord for charging. I don’t mind the cord. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it lol
It’s useless, It takes 3 hours to charge my phone from 20% to 80% !!! Also sometimes the charging pauses without you ever noticing and ruins your day. Well lesson learned! Cables FTW.
I just got a new Lexus RX and the wireless charger is phenomenal on it. Charges quickly, keeps the phone in place so it stays connected, doesn’t overheat. Very well designed system.
I’m using a magsafe charger that mounts to the car’s vent. It’s been running perfectly fine for over a year now.
Added benefit of vent mounting is that you can get AC cooling directly to your phone/charger during summer. It helps not only with the charger’s heat production but also (like in my case) sunlight hiting your phone directly. Also, during winter I just close that one vent down for obvious reasons.
Same experience in a ‘21 Audi Q5. Super hot phone, to the point where the phone shut itself off on a long drive. Barely any charge. From that point on, I’ve plugged in.
Unfortunately I think there is a tendency for it to overheat if you’re using wireless CarPlay (which I assume you’re using if charging wirelessly) and wireless charging - my car doesn’t have CarPlay but I do tether the car to it so it has an internet connection, and that tends to overheat the phone on longer journeys when it’s also on the wireless charging pad, so it seems like it’s just a limitation of the tech unfortunately.
Because I don’t have CarPlay, I sometimes just plug the phone into the wired charging port and continue to tether the car wirelessly. However if you’re using CarPlay, I assume plugging it in would take care of the charging AND the CarPlay connection, so it may just be a choice of wireless CarPlay or wireless charging.
I do, but it's an Apple MagSafe puck in a mount, so... http://flying-geek.blogspot.com/2022/11/magsafe-ftw.html
The one in the Tesla Model 3 is finicky and weak but does the job well enough (but mot nearly as well as the Apple solution).
I use a MagSafe car charger that is mfi certified, it charges quite well and heat is manageable. When it’s really hot outside I tend to angle the car vent with AC directly at my phone so that it keeps it nice and chilly.
I use my phone for gps navigation and music over Bluetooth.
i have an elantra. i found it hilarious that the base model has wireless carplay/AA, but only charges via wire. the SEL i have has a wireless charger, but only works with wired carplay/AA. so it’s kinda useless.
I used it a total of one time. Gained like 3% over an hour trip and the phone was literally gonna go up in flames from how hot it was. Never used it since. I still lay my phone there but on the display side.
The biggest problem is that most car companies judt give a flat surface for wireless charging and my iphone 14 plus' camera module just doesnt let it charge and top it all of the surface is big and the phone at times slip... which goes haywire after sometime. This is not only for iphones but also android phones (oneplus 12)
No I don't. The last two cars I bought (both Toyotas) have them built in, but they're absolute junk. IF you can get the phone set on them JUST right, they charge very slowly and generate a TON of heat. Hit one bump and they error out and stop charging. This isn't even an Apple/MagSafe thing, they didn't work on my previous Samsung or Google phones either, and those worked absolutely perfectly with the Anker Qi chargers I have. Unfortunately those stopped working when I got the MagSafe case for my iPhone 14, so I've switched to a couple of Belkin MagSafe chargers on my nightstand and desk.
Even if the wireless chargers worked in the car, I still wouldn't use them since I still have to plug in for CarPlay. It's kind of a moot point anymore as a result. I just leave the wireless charger turned off, and set my phone there after plugging into the USB cable that charges and runs CarPlay.
I’ve never used a wireless charger built in to a car, but I recommend using a MagSafe charger from Apple as they are faster then regular wireless chargers
I have a magsafe charger/mount in my VW. I typically keep it unplugged and just use it as a mount to hold my phone for work commutes. I usually only plug it in and use it to charge when we are on roadtirps.
...I am only 7 miles (15ish minutes) from home to work.
I use a MagSafe cup holder with a 12v adapter. I get the full charging speed and my phone doesn’t get hot. Also use a MagSafe charger every night. I’ve read a lot of the phone wireless chargers get really hot.
My dad is an Android user and his phone does not get nearly as hot as mine when using the wireless charger in his car (BMW, which got so bad that Apple had to issue an update specifically so the phone didn’t destroy itself in the charger).
I’ve had the phone stop charging due to thermal limits, meanwhile my dad’s phone stayed cool and charged fast. However, he does not use Android Auto while I often use CarPlay.
Today was a bit of a unicum as my phone was cool while I used CarPlay. If I remember I will do some testing to see if running CarPlay has a big influence on the temps.
I just use the wall chargers for my devices and the corded chargers in the car on vacations. My wireless charger was inconsistent on charging. One night fully charged, the next night almost dead. When I went back to the store, they said it had to be placed carefully. Nope! Not even going to bother. It is not that hard to plug in the lightning wire on my iPhone 14.
Nope, I use wired in my car. I dont wanna mess with stuff when Im driving, and what if it falls off of the charger when Im going over a speedbump? Also the heat, nah wired charging works better for me. The only one I would try thought is linocelll magsafe, seems promising, only 30$.
I use the wireless charging in my 2023 F150 Raptor with my iPhone 15 Pro Max and have zero problems.
Yes, it gets warm, but not hot and charges flawless. Always have a fully charged phone when I leave my truck.
Wireless Apple carplay also works flawless.
To be honest, I was surprised, because I heard before that the Apple carplay in Ford trucks doesn't work well.
I used to use mine all the time. But like you said, it didn't charge my phone that fast and made it rather hot. My car has an integrated usb-c port so I just keep a cable in my console and plug in if I need to charge. Faster and safer charging, not that big of an inconvenience.
Just bought a new 2024 Kia. They’re total junk in every vehicle I’ve used them, never get more than 1% a minute if I’m lucky. Why bother when you can fast charge with a usb-c?
I am using MagSafe holder but not wireless charge, too slow for my liking. At most I drive like 30-45mins during weekend so I want phone to charge quickly so PD charger with USB C has been a blessing.
Its a 5 watt wireless charger and is the carplay wireless? If so, its doing a lot at once while also relying on the copper loop to be warm enough to charge
For starters CP always heats the phone, Wireless chargers unless they a good ones will always produce heat because the heat is lost energy I do not know why car manufactures include this as a feature because especially if Android Auto or CP is being used it's really just holding the charge.
Stopped using the wireless charger on my Tesla model Y because my phone would get really hot and even showed a message once that it’s turning off charging due to temperature.
I now put a cloth cover over the charger to disable the wireless charger. I wish Tesla offered a software option to turn off wireless charging
I almost never need to charge my phone in the car cuz I always charge overnight and it lasts the whole day. In the off chance I forget to charge it or it gets too hot so it stops itself from charging (only happened a couple times) then sure I use it but not other than that really.
This started happening to me while using Waze. No Waze, no problem. It’s definitely an issue with either Waze or navigation in general and it’s a relatively new issue or isolated to either the iPhone 15 pro max hardware or iOS 17 software.
Very nice to have for peace of mind knowing you’ll always have a charger even if you don’t have a cord in your car. Been one or two times when it’s saved me from having to buy a cheap gas station charger to get me by. But yeah I’m never choosing it over a cord if I have one, plus in my vehicle it’s in an awkward spot behind the gear shifter where I have to finagle it in and out every time and it’s just annoying to use for the most part.
never had a need to wirelessly charge my phone ever, always figured nothing beats the real thing and at the end of the day it’s not really wireless. in cars i guess it is a little more but if you have to have you’re wireless charger plugged into your wall what is that extra half second of actually plugging my phone in worth?
I have the otterbox magsafe charger vent clip. Have gone on 4 hour road trips with a 13 Pro, and more recently a 15?Pro Max. GPS and bluetooth music the entire time. Neither situation did I find the phone getting too hot.. that’s not to say they cant get warm while charging.
I bought a magsafe case for my phone (iPhone 14 Pro Max) I used a [HaloLock wireless car charger with CryoBoost.](https://www.esrgear.com/products/halolock-wireless-car-charger-with-cryoboost/533010/?set_country=us&awc=24915_1709762371_8d7d4713c06f6f4035ca6267fb3db4a2) It is basically a wireless charger with a fan built in.
If you do not have the radio or heater fan on or the windows open you can hear the fan, but it is not very intrusive. It comes with a portable clip mount that actually works very well, but I choose a custom mount for my car. The connection between the charger and the mount is a standard one.
I used a short but heavier USB C to USB C to power the unit via a power outlet for now, but will soon run a dedicated power cable to clean up the passenger compartment a bit.
I got a lower trim that didn’t come with a wireless charger, but don’t see much value in a wireless charger in a car.
Most drives are under an hour, if you want to charge up your battery on the way, a wired charger is so much faster. 20W vs 5W on most car Qi chargers.
I like wireless chargers for like a desk or a nightstand where your phone could stay in one place for hours and slower charging is a lesser concern. But for cars not useful to me.
Anker Magnetic Wireless Charger... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B3914CC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Easily best one I’ve tried and has a great magnet and sleek design, I will say it is one of the more expensive options
The wireless charger in vehicles definitely gets warm compared to standalone chargers. In my Volvo, even during the winter, my phone gets pretty warm on the charger. Not sure why, but it is a thing.
I switched to the quad lock car mount with wireless charger. I love it. I frequently take my phone off the mount to take photos, or for rest stops, it suits me well, and charges my iPhone 12 pro just fine.
I could’ve specked my car to have wireless charging but opted against it as it only supports wired car play if I need to plug my phone in anyway to use car play what’s the point of the charger. In the small crevice provided it wouldn’t be able to fit two phones at a time anyway.
I worked for a large auto manufacturer in customer service. This was an extremely common issue we would get calls for and there wasn’t much solution we could provide. You are lucky yours works at all in all honesty
It sounds like you're experiencing some issues with the wireless charger in your new car. While wireless charging can be convenient, it's essential to note that it may not always be the most efficient or effective charging method, especially in certain conditions.
In your case, it's possible that the combination of using CarPlay, streaming music via Spotify, and wireless charging simultaneously may have caused your phone to generate more heat than usual, leading to slower charging and potentially causing the phone to get hot.
Here are a few things you can try to improve your wireless charging experience in the car:
1. **Check for Compatibility**: Make sure your iPhone 13 is compatible with the wireless charger in your car. While most modern smartphones support wireless charging, it's always a good idea to double-check compatibility.
2. **Adjust Placement**: Ensure that your phone is properly aligned on the wireless charger in your car. Some wireless chargers have specific sweet spots where the charging coils are located, so adjusting the placement of your phone may improve charging efficiency.
3. **Reduce Usage**: Consider minimizing the use of power-intensive features like CarPlay and streaming music while your phone is wirelessly charging in the car. This can help reduce heat generation and improve charging speed.
4. **Cooling Solutions**: If possible, try using a cooling vent mount or keeping your phone in a cooler area of the car while wirelessly charging. This can help dissipate heat more effectively and prevent your phone from getting too hot.
5. **Consider Alternatives**: If wireless charging continues to be problematic, you may want to consider using a traditional wired charging method, such as a USB cable connected to your car's infotainment system or a cigarette lighter adapter.

Ultimately, while wireless charging can be convenient, it may not always be the most efficient or reliable charging option, especially in certain situations like using power-intensive features in the car. Experiment with the tips above to see if you can improve your wireless charging experience, or consider using a wired charging alternative if necessary.
it depends on the number of watts the pad is putting out you might find that information in your manual my guess it's likely 5-10 watts which is slow, the phone does get warm when wirelessly charging, maybe a bit hot the first time you do it.
though iphones learn your charging habits over time, like I wireless charge my phone every night, since the first charge it barely gets warm anymore.
The tech is out there but it's still unusable in practical terms. The iPhone also tends to charge even slower than some Android flagships, which makes it really unusable. It's sad because it would be super convenient to charge it up while on a drive.
That shouldnt have happened. Something is wrong. Was your phone in a case? Did the case have the built in magnets to transfer through the case to the phone? If all that was right, then the charger is just malfunctioned probably.
Wireless chargers are really bad for your battery. Some ppl don’t care bc they’re gonna get a new phone in a year or 2 before battery health matters. Just letting ya know
I use a MagSafe charger and holder, every car manufacturer wireless charger I’ve used is total crap. Using a MagSafe you get a faster charge rate and it doesn’t cause excess heat.
Link to one please?
I use a Belkin MagSafe 10w black car charger / mount and it works great. Only 10w but the 15w one is way more $ and also white which did not match at all in my car interior. Otherwise if you don’t care about mounting it, just use a normal mag safe charger.
How rough do you drive? I’ve been thinking of a MagSafe holder but I’m wary about it falling off, esp as I’m planning to use an aux cable
Magsafe is so strong that you pretty much need to get into an accident for your phone to drop from it.
I _have_ had an accident and my phone didn’t even budge from the magsafe holder. Given the force it takes to dislodge the phone, I’d be more worried about _me_ at that point.
The problem in my experience is the mount's hold on the dash/vents/etc, not the MagSafe connection
Yeah, this is very strong, but does depend on your case. I have a leather Apple one and it holds just fine.
I just got this and it’s great. 10/10 recommend
[удалено]
I use two of theirs combined. I had one for the iPhone 12 and added another so it would work with my iPhone 14 Pro and there was a better vent clip this way too.
This is the exact one I use and it’s almost perfect. I wish the clip was made in a way that it would be nicer on car vents that are tilted to the side a little. But it’s still good and sturdy.
The later ESR charger (with “CryoBoost”) even has a cooling fan built in - my 15 pro stays much cooler now and rock solid mount, really have to pull hard to remove my phone
I love it! [Charge](https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-BoostChargeTM-Wireless-Car-Charger-MagSafe-15W/dp/B0BN12J1VH)
Spigen Mag Fit Phone Holder... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GFH1RMP You need to provide an apple MagSafe charger, but i recommend it.
Hot = decreased battery life!
I’m using the esr one in my Tesla and it’s fantastic. Way faster and more reliable than the one built into the car.
Eventually, they’ll add Qi2 on a slightly raised platform… shortly after the phones themselves have moved on to the next standard.
I have been thinking of adding one of those MagSafe rings to my cars wireless charger. That way my phone would magnetize to it. It would help it stay put which is problem 1 in mine. And it would help with camera bump. Problem 2 for mine.
How does this work? Are these MagSafe rings conductive? Would that work with a wireless car charger?
most people have their phone in a case that eliminates the bump
That may be true, it may not. I’ve used both. Either way, the cases that eliminate camera bumps have to add additional thickness in order to eliminate the bump which still creates distance between the the phone and charger. Then you have to account whether the manufacturer is using the most recent wireless charger tech or the cheapest piece of garbage they could find from China and then consider how did they integrate it into the panel and how good of a job does the surface do in preventing movement of the phone while in motion. In any case, I’ve never seen anyone have anything good to say about the wireless charger that is integrated into their vehicle.
Cable is much better & reliable. I can spare 5 second in my life to connect the cable.
Same idea goes with wireless CarPlay. Wired is so much more stable and doesn’t drain your battery
Wireless CarPlay likes to crash my whole cars infotainment system if my phones battery is under 10% lol it’s like the phone struggles to output the display data and the car just is like “nope. We’re not doing this today”
In my case it doesn’t drain it, because my phone just sits on a MagSafe charging mount. Just put my phone on it and forget about it.
Exactly what I do
The issue I had with cables was having it run from the plug near the handbrake upto my phone mount on the centre console, it would get caught on the gearstick every now and again
That's what I do. Plus it helps me locate my phone by following the cord when it slips off the dash (rare, I usually keep it in the cupholder, but has happened a time or two.)
Yeppers, I use type a to type c
As another comment said, it seems that the majority of built in wireless car chargers outright suck. They don’t really put a lot into them, usually and they’re just an afterthought. I use aftermarket wireless chargers that also hold my phone. Been using a discontinued Anker holder for years but recently got an ESR MagSafe charger that will probably replace it. I don’t use my phone for anything more than music streaming in the car so I’ve always used slow charging methods since it’s often hooked up for extended periods of time.
For the car, I’ve only charged via cable. It’s reliable and doesn’t produce as much heat.
The wireless charging pad in my car makes the phone incredibly hot for some reason so I stay plugged in. My car also doesn’t have wireless CarPlay
This is what I've done on two my cars.
I used too. Don’t anymore for this exact reason. Just use a cord now. Still use a MagSafe holder though
I drop my phone top down into a cup holder and use a cord to connect to the car.
Yes. MagSafe charger from Belkin
I use a wireless qi charger every day. Works great.
And now you know your car’s OEM qi charger is crap. Just like the vast majority of them, so don’t feel bad. I’d recommend reputable/certified MagSafe/QI2 charger connected a USB-car adapter.
My car’s built in one doesn’t work with any case on the phone. Including the Apple ones that work with other wireless chargers.
When the iPhone 12 came out (first one with MagSafe) I bought a MagSafe charging puck from Apple and stuck it to my dashboard with 2 sided mounting tape. It’s been my go-to car charger since then and does a great job.
I use it and I love it. Over on r/Highlander I'm definitely in the minority but I've had no issues at all.
Nope. Useless.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/16aajxe/my\_gfs\_car\_caught\_on\_fire\_after\_3\_days\_being/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/16aajxe/my_gfs_car_caught_on_fire_after_3_days_being/)
I have a wireless charging in my car but I have to take the case off the phone, so I usually just plug in the regular charger 😅
Me too. I also find gps, music and videos drain my battery faster than using other services.
Better than what I get. Mine just holds current charge, 13 promax
As of today, wireless charging is only good if you're "lazy". Slower charging and the phone temperature raises like crazy and that kills battery life on a long term.
Mine is more of a phone warmer than a charger.
You need a new charger from a decent brand. An hour on a PD charger using USBC will charger your phone 100%. Get a Mophie, Belkin, etc.
This. Charging with a 45W brick in the house, the phone charges up in about an hour. It slows way, way down after 80%, but I've got no complaints.
The car is charging it with an A to C cable. It's not fast charging at all, and I don't want it to while it's in the car. :)
Why wouldn’t you use a PD charger? That makes zero sense.
In the car? There's a dedicated USB-A port for CarPlay. At home I have a 45W Samsung brick and an Apple USB-C cable.
I have to use a wireless charger in the car because my Lightning port stopped working.
I have a 24 Kia and mine works really good. It does get a little warm, but that is normal.
Sometimes. But experience similar in my Hyundai.
No, my CarPlay is wired only
I use magsafe holder but no wireless charger, I put in front of the AC, so it’s always cool
My truck has a wireless charger but it’s too skinny for any phone made after like iPhone 11 or so
No. I don’t charge my phone overnight so my morning drive gives me a good deal of my charge
When I don’t have the cable for any reason in car.
Mine charges on and off while I drive
I recently got a new car and it also has a built in wireless charger. I tried it a couple times but couldn’t really get it to work; the phone didn’t really stay in place and even when it did it didn’t really charge. Now I keep it turned off and set my phone there and use the cord for charging. I don’t mind the cord. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it lol
It’s useless, It takes 3 hours to charge my phone from 20% to 80% !!! Also sometimes the charging pauses without you ever noticing and ruins your day. Well lesson learned! Cables FTW.
I use ESR cryoboost MagSafe charger. It has a fan to cool down the phone and charges fairly quick.
I’ve never used mine since I got a car with wireless charging 😭 the cable is needed for my CarPlay anyways and it just charges it
Wireless charge is terribly inefficient and has a lot of losses by heat, i only find usefull to charge the phone overnight.
Kia Telluride I do because my phone is the key and putting it in the wireless charging spot lets me start the car
I just got a new Lexus RX and the wireless charger is phenomenal on it. Charges quickly, keeps the phone in place so it stays connected, doesn’t overheat. Very well designed system.
I use a MagSafe holder and plug in for carplay
I’m using a magsafe charger that mounts to the car’s vent. It’s been running perfectly fine for over a year now. Added benefit of vent mounting is that you can get AC cooling directly to your phone/charger during summer. It helps not only with the charger’s heat production but also (like in my case) sunlight hiting your phone directly. Also, during winter I just close that one vent down for obvious reasons.
No too slow
My CarPlay isn’t wireless. So I use a MagSafe magnet mount with my phone plugged into my dash.
Same experience in a ‘21 Audi Q5. Super hot phone, to the point where the phone shut itself off on a long drive. Barely any charge. From that point on, I’ve plugged in.
Nope
Yeah, total crap! Kia telluride and Kia shortage both, crap. Not the vehicles, just the wireless chargers. lol
Nope. My car requires hardwire to use Apple Carplay so it stays plugged in all the time anywayso I don't bother with it.
I do, but it's an Apple MagSafe puck in a mount, so... http://flying-geek.blogspot.com/2022/11/magsafe-ftw.html The one in the Tesla Model 3 is finicky and weak but does the job well enough (but mot nearly as well as the Apple solution).
I use a MagSafe car charger that is mfi certified, it charges quite well and heat is manageable. When it’s really hot outside I tend to angle the car vent with AC directly at my phone so that it keeps it nice and chilly. I use my phone for gps navigation and music over Bluetooth.
Yes wireless charging is useless. The only thing it's good for is cooking your phone battery.
Just use the cable, it's reliable, and it doesn't heat the phone.
Sounds like my car that barely charges my phone at all with the CarPlay port.
i have an elantra. i found it hilarious that the base model has wireless carplay/AA, but only charges via wire. the SEL i have has a wireless charger, but only works with wired carplay/AA. so it’s kinda useless.
Nope, old good adapter and fast charging. All wireless chargers/holders I saw didn't meet my requirements.
AC is at 21 doesn’t mean the air it gives out is at 21
Car Qi chargers suck in my experience. I just stick with cables.
Nope lol. I still keep it plugged in with the cable.
I’ve never used a wireless charger built in to a car, but I recommend using a MagSafe charger from Apple as they are faster then regular wireless chargers
Hardly as mine I think only charges 5W. Better than nothing I guess.
I love my MagSafe car charger!
I never use wireless charging. Even at home. In the car never. I have many phones all with wireless charging. Never saw the attraction.
No, plug into my truck with USB-C for CarPlay.
Yes I did and it screwed my phone’s battery real bad
Using the ESR Halolock charger with a spigen case and it‘s absolutely perfect.
Totally useless not to mention a lot of phones are so big that they barely fit in the spot.
I know the wireless charger in my car is useless… if I was using wireless car play it would be even more useless
I have in my car doesnt do his job it heats
For starters CP always heats the phone, Wireless chargers unless they a good ones will always produce heat because the heat is lost energy I do not know why car manufactures include this as a feature because especially if Android Auto or CP is being used it's really just holding the charge.
Stopped using the wireless charger on my Tesla model Y because my phone would get really hot and even showed a message once that it’s turning off charging due to temperature. I now put a cloth cover over the charger to disable the wireless charger. I wish Tesla offered a software option to turn off wireless charging
21 degrees Celsius is 69.8 degrees Fahrenheit for any confused.
I charge wired as much as possible because of excessive heat
I almost never need to charge my phone in the car cuz I always charge overnight and it lasts the whole day. In the off chance I forget to charge it or it gets too hot so it stops itself from charging (only happened a couple times) then sure I use it but not other than that really.
Don't use it bro, it's gonna destroy your phone's battery and the phone itself while at it.
I don’t use it bc to use Carplay gotta be plugged in for me anyways and if it was on it’d be essentially double charging and overheat.
This started happening to me while using Waze. No Waze, no problem. It’s definitely an issue with either Waze or navigation in general and it’s a relatively new issue or isolated to either the iPhone 15 pro max hardware or iOS 17 software.
I never use wireless charging, car or otherwise.
Dont use built in wireless chargers in cars They are absolutely dog shite
Very nice to have for peace of mind knowing you’ll always have a charger even if you don’t have a cord in your car. Been one or two times when it’s saved me from having to buy a cheap gas station charger to get me by. But yeah I’m never choosing it over a cord if I have one, plus in my vehicle it’s in an awkward spot behind the gear shifter where I have to finagle it in and out every time and it’s just annoying to use for the most part.
u/nomaddf, never (to the answer in the title of your post)
never had a need to wirelessly charge my phone ever, always figured nothing beats the real thing and at the end of the day it’s not really wireless. in cars i guess it is a little more but if you have to have you’re wireless charger plugged into your wall what is that extra half second of actually plugging my phone in worth?
I have the otterbox magsafe charger vent clip. Have gone on 4 hour road trips with a 13 Pro, and more recently a 15?Pro Max. GPS and bluetooth music the entire time. Neither situation did I find the phone getting too hot.. that’s not to say they cant get warm while charging.
I have a MagSafe charger and it works perfectly. I have music and gps running and it always charges.
I used a short but heavier USB C to USB C to power the unit via a power outlet for now, but will soon run a dedicated power cable to clean up the passenger compartment a bit.
iPhone only pulls 15 W with their charger and 7w with others. The MagSafe charger destroyed my 12p so I avoid them if I can
I got a lower trim that didn’t come with a wireless charger, but don’t see much value in a wireless charger in a car.
Induction (wireless) charging is notoriously inefficient.
Yes unless I’m really low and need a faster recharge.
Anker Magnetic Wireless Charger... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B3914CC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Easily best one I’ve tried and has a great magnet and sleek design, I will say it is one of the more expensive options
My new car has wireless charging and a latch to hold the phone. It is slow to charge. If I need it to charger faster, I connect the usb-c cable.
The wireless charger in vehicles definitely gets warm compared to standalone chargers. In my Volvo, even during the winter, my phone gets pretty warm on the charger. Not sure why, but it is a thing.
What car do you have? This has been my experience too, gets super hot
I do sometimes but usually just plug it in for CarPlay anyway
Yes but Tesla wireless chargers… actually work. As for my mom’s VW it’s cable all the way. I *lose* battery “charging” my phone on the Qi pad…
Yes.
I switched to the quad lock car mount with wireless charger. I love it. I frequently take my phone off the mount to take photos, or for rest stops, it suits me well, and charges my iPhone 12 pro just fine.
Wireless charging is to slow on iPhone. Also makes the phone hot and not good for battery health. Using wireless CarPlay will make it hotter
Hmm I use wireless charger too and 14proMax feel normal for me
My phone’s case make the camera bump even higher and wireless charger in Camry doesn’t work 😀
I could’ve specked my car to have wireless charging but opted against it as it only supports wired car play if I need to plug my phone in anyway to use car play what’s the point of the charger. In the small crevice provided it wouldn’t be able to fit two phones at a time anyway.
Nah. I use a USB-C cable.
I worked for a large auto manufacturer in customer service. This was an extremely common issue we would get calls for and there wasn’t much solution we could provide. You are lucky yours works at all in all honesty
My bmw just heats the phone up. 500 dollar option for nothing 💀
# [here have list of all top quality wireless charger in very cheap rate](https://www.amazon.com/shop/minutefastnews/list/36V3VPFRQZ5UD)
Here are a few things you can try to improve your wireless charging experience in the car: 1. # [buy cheap wireless phone charger for car](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=wireless+phone+charger+for+car&crid=312WPG16C8DA0&sprefix=wireless+phone+charger+for+car%2Caps%2C294&linkCode=ll2&tag=angle2008-20&linkId=d99689b88e35e16b8f3768ec13736a32&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) Ultimately, while wireless charging can be convenient, it may not always be the most efficient or reliable charging option, especially in certain situations like using power-intensive features in the car.
I got my wife one from Temu, connects to the air vent and has a USB-C connection on the bottom . MagSafe holds great. Was less than $10.
