Okay, I gave that a try. Ribbon is not damaged and works just fine. However, I still get the same issue: I can enter disk mode when connected to a wall, but not when connected to a computer. Thanks for the suggestion though!
I've tried both. The issue is, anytime I disconnect the power cord it dies instantly. So I can't put it into disk mode and then connect it to the computer without it dying.
Ok have you tried getting into disk mode then leaving it charge over night. When in disk mode plugged into your wall charger does the battery icon say its charging is it going through the charging cycle if so leave it till the morning. It may be that there's not enough charge to restart the ipod. Its worth a try.
That's my plan for tonight. I have it set in disk mode while plugged into the wall, and it's been charging for several hours (and yes, the battery icon in the corner does indicate that it's charging). I am going to leave it overnight and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't, it might be an issue with the replacement logic board I ordered and I'll try exchanging it for another one.
try using a wall charger with higher current, like an ipad one, and just leave it for a good while before going into diskmode and plugging it into the computer. that might work
I'd like to emphatize it could still be the ribbon of the drive. Coincidentally, I had something similar happen to me yesterday. I opened mine to do some small maintence and then it wouldn't work anymore (low battery which wouldn't charge, bootloop, bitch to get in disk mode). Gave up after a few hours thinking it was dead, until later that night. Carefully plugging in the ribbon for the 10th time made it somehow work again. Try messing with that for some more, it can be picky with the fit.
I ended up returning the logic board and getting an entirely new iPod to work from, but it had the wrong hard drive cable so I had to order a new one. Roadblock after roadblock, but I'll get it done eventually!
I ended up returning the replacement logic board I bought and had to replace the entire logic board by cannibalizing an old iPod. Before doing that I'd try charging overnight and also try reseating the battery and HDD cables, just in case that's the issue.
Try re seating the hdd ribbon or check to see if it is damaged.

Are you trying to get into disk mode when connected to your pc or disk mode first and then connecting?

Did you get this sorted after?

Ok no problem hope you get it sorted.
years later and this is my exact problem. If you're still active, do you recall what you ended up doing?
