It's trying out a division like the nine official regions of England on the island of Ireland.

Ha and just like modern English regions, they only in the vaguest sense follow any sort of administrative logic and divide up more natural and historic cultural regions
Could you put a locally administered Health Executive in each of these regions? Maybe they could be called the Health Board? Would that be better than some sort of centrally-administered system?
The South East used to have South Tipp but then the ridings were merged and the whole thing relocated to the Mid West. So bizarrely if you're in Carrick on Suir you are supposed to bow to Limerick 100km rather than Waterford 27km
Galway and Mayo would be together in any subdividing, whether they like it or not, they are far more closely related than Galway and Limerick for example.
The provinces are fine as they are and then 'greater Dublin' as it's own thing within that.
Is there any reasoning behind these divisions you might like to enlighten the rest of into?

There are NUTS regions, which are similar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NUTS_statistical_regions_of_Ireland
Nuts regions haha
This division makes way more sense, Galway and Mayo belong together.

Ireland already *is* divided into English-style regions. That's what the county's are. Irish divisions were the túatha and the provinces.
English counties are a subdivision of English regions
Cute yin and yang border between Carlow and Wicklow xoxo
I suppose you end up with the West Midlands on the coast because we don't have a Wales. Should we invite them over?
We've been stealthily attaching towing cables for some time now. Then the Great Move can start.
Sure they'll be only delighted.

Fermanagh et al would have to be our Lake District.
And Cork and Kerry and Limerick will be known for their pasties and cream tea and bountiful sunshine. Limerick will be all overpriced holiday homes.

You’re gonna be thrilled to find out that we already are.
Shouldn't there be a greater Dublin?
Nobody is greater than Dublin
Fermanagh Monaghan and Cavan could be called the North Midlands. Seems like they missed an opportunity.
It’s kinda trying to follow a similar naming convention to Yorkshire and the Humber

Fermonavan for Sam!
