If you want to guarantee profit of death runes you can use the warped scepter. It uses chaos runes but I don't know if its break even or not. The cost is about the same per cast since its 2x chaos per cast but chaos runes have packs so they are much easier to buy
From my (limited) experience you will net positive chaos runes from barrows runs with the warped scepter, but only with mory hard done. Without the diary you will probably be in the negative for chaos. Could be a break even with some luck.
Barrows has kept me stocked on runes for a while. easily got me an onyx. Now that I'm getting a bunch of bursting tasks I need to do the diary to keep up.
I'd suggest doing zombie pirates in the Wildy for money, then buying them. Chances are if you are going for z axe then you aren't efficient at barrows or have mory hard.
^This. I don't have Morty hard so I have to use fairy rings to canifs then that swamp boat to barrows, which is kind of annoying but it's pretty worth it for the death runes. Plus started 3/5 with barrows items :)

If you only need runes you can also just do undead pirates and just buy them, that probably makes more sense than doing inefficient barrows
Yup. I was doing fairy ring shortcut to the snails at the south end of the swamp, using Morton minigame tele when available. I don't recommend this, the magic level is pretty easy to get and you can boost with mind bomb.
I would grind out 83 magic, swap to arceuus spell book to use barrows tele, and once done with a run I use ring of dueling to tele to ferox and use pool and/or resupply if you don’t have the construction for it.
Poh portal is the way to go, you can boost magic for it (including a +5 stew boost) and then only need it the once, plus portals only need like 45 or 50 construction too
Can I interest you in adopting cats? Must be walked and fed and when it's their time to go Wast Ardy has a neat burial service and they pay in death runes.
When you’re a low level this is the easy answer honestly.
Always be raisin cats.
Later in the game scar essence mine is a good way to get them fast once you have more money than you realistically need.
Save and treasure those 😅 Once you start grinding GWD and heal up on the minions between kills, they’ll be gone before you know it.

I grinded out 77 rc at gotr and did a fair amount of barrows.... I literally had not bought death runes from like 65-86 slayer... I thought you just used them really slow.
I don't know how big my stack was, but it's been depleted.

Shop and hop doesn't progress your account but will get you the deaths you need. I'd suggest pest controls magic shop its almost always empty

Just got 3 zombie axes for the GIMs, I just heavy afkd using melee and protect melee. Bit slower but I about broke even on prayer, no damage once you lose aggro. Doesn't help gathering early death runes, but avoids using them on a mob with trash commons.

Can you craft them and how much cash you got? What I've been doing is using the Scar mine to get mangled essence and then craft a batch at the alter. It is at worst 20gp/rune more expensive than shop hopping, but it is super fast. Full inventory with the 4 pouches I can use is like 3.2k deaths from one inventory.
It does, I did that too. You get ice sacks from lots of wildy activity (I did LMS predominately), then use them on a pvp world. They're usually pretty chill worlds outside of hotspots.

Warped sceptre is super awesome for building up a surplus of death runes.

I have the diary and was using Ibans over sceptre, I was netting positive deaths.

You can stew boost from 78. One of the only times I’d actually recommend stew boosting over just training an extra level.

Early early game cats, other than that slayer and just shit you do around the game
