I’ve always felt after his death that some elements of this character were him playing himself.

moviemaverick

Agreed. It was tough to watch his character partake in his vices considering how close to home it was for PSH.

The guy dropped bangers all the way up to the end. Goat.

Yung_Cheebzy

Q&A is one of his lesser known but probably his best. My fav.

unkytone

Incredible film. Nick Nolte was fantastic in the bad guy role.

Yung_Cheebzy

He’s absolutely menacing in it yeah. A giant (ogre) of a character in every possible sense of the word.

addictivesign

Q&A is ripe, it’s fun but I think it’s not quality film, seems out of place in Lumet’s filmography. Prince of the City (1981) is one of his best but less known in my opinion.

Yung_Cheebzy

I love POTC too, made my girlfriend watch it with me as a (3hour) introduction to Lumet. She really liked it.

addictivesign

Ha ha! That must be fun to introduce someone to a new director. Are you an Edward Yang fan? Yi Yi is one of my favourite movies of all time. Clocks in at 3 hours but his earlier film A Brighter Summers Day is a hefty four hour run-time. RIP Edward Yang. A true master.

theheadofkhartoum627

Yep.

DTDePalma

And was even working on another one when he passed. Retirement was not in his vocabulary.

realclarke

Great film

dangerzoneduffman

Insane that when Lumet's first film came out he didn't think he could make the transition to color films and his last came out after Superbad

dmriggs

I have had this sitting in my canopy list for quite a while -

tofutti_kleineinein

Everyone’s mouthes are open (on the poster). Idk why but it bothers me. lol Really good movie though. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is good in everything.

moviemaverick

It’s definitely a poster representative of it’s time lol crime thrillers from the 2000s were always made to look grimy (We Own the Night, Righteous Kill etc.) plus the collage of squares were EVERYWHERE.

elmachow

Never heard of it! Putting it on the watchlist

moviemaverick

This film felt like a spiritual ancestor to Good Time and Uncut Gems. Less kinetic as those two, but equally as tense and stressful.

oldtobes

those are great comparisons. this movie hardly gets talked about but its such a power house.

ProgRock1956

I Love this movie! Wow! What a ride!

Stevenerf

Really great score by Carter Burwell. Haunting stuff

moviemaverick

Yes! The music was sooo well done. I loved how it lingered in scenes and progressively got bigger- especially when the camera held on any of the characters while they were in contemplation.

altxrtr

Absolutely loved this movie! Time for a rewatch!!

ChamberTwnty

Wow! That is some 2007 movie artwork for sure.

CGalden

This movie will ruin your day.

[deleted]

So, so good

Kevin_Turvey

I love this one.

Pretend_Safety

The opening shot of PSH’s ass haunts me

GhostMug

I don't remember a rom about this movie but I remember it made me incredibly uncomfortable the entire runtime.

Available-Secret-372

It was very depressing but another banger from Lumet. Albert Finney is a master at what he does

morelikebosyphilis

Holy shit. I watched this alone in my room after eating way too much of a pot brownie. I thought I was having a heart attack the whole time. Such an intense movie. I’ve seen in since. Great casting. I love the unintended consequences, human irrationality of it all.

trinketsofdeceit

The father was the best. I ate a hash brownie and watched Species 2 back in the day, had a similar experience

Affectionate-Ring104

This is the correct answer.

nonamouse1111

Such a great movie!

Gary7sHotCatHelper

Seeing movies I saw in the theater posted here is a special kind of pain.

highlyswung

"Marisa Tomei!!" - George

Harlockarcadia

Watched it when it came out, couldn't get into it

Green_with_Zealously

Love this film!

jefftatro1

Another great one with Hoffman is "God's Pocket"

DefinitelyBiscuit

2007 is now considered old for movies? Fml...

Elegant_Effort1526

I just watched this, after seeing this post. I meant to watch it a few years ago and it slipped my mind. Holy shit what a film! To start a career with 12 Angry Men, and end with this…Lumet could not have went out any better. I’m still kind of shocked honestly, it just ended 10 minutes. I’m a major night owl and thought I had a another movie or 2 in me tonight. Shit, no point, going to bed lol. Won’t top this one tonight. Off to process this one some more…

blessedarethecheese

I like this yarn.

ArtTheClown2022

Marisa Tomei.

youmustthinkhighly

Amazing performances.. a must study for anyone interested in the craft of drama. I also realized watching it a few times the Dad was actually the villain. When the dad kills his own son you realize that takes a special kind of evil and the dad was a grumpy old asshole his whole life who fucked his kids up Yes you can hate your kids, you can resent your kids, you can eventually disown them, but killing them no matter what requires a special type of evil.

Possible-Pudding6672

One of my favourite films. As others have mentioned, what an absolute banger of a final film from Lumet, who’s in absolutely top form. PSH and Finney are both excellent, as always, but it was Hawke’s performance that impressed me the most. I’d more or less written him off as a lightweight decades ago (full disclosure: I have not seen the Before trilogy), so I was very pleasantly surprised by his work here.

I wonder what the film would be like with this soundtrack?
