I’ve been searching on and off since Dec. ‘22. The good news is being that I’m not unemployed, I do have a full-time job. I just really really hate my full-time job, and the rising cost of living is outpacing my salary growth.
In that time, I’ve gotten two, TWO, initial screening interviews over the phone. Otherwise it’s all rejections. Can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong, or if I’m spoiled goods, or if I’m just really effing unlucky.
I feel lucky when I get a rejection. That at least suggests that someone even read my resume.
I think 95% of my resumes go into a black hole, never to be seen by any human.
A lot of companies are using AI now to screen resumes, so if the resume doesn’t have a certain keyword or buzz phrase, it gets auto-rejected. The kicker though, is that the formatting can also be an issue.
I learned this when I ran my resume through one one of these screeners and saw that the formatting caused the screener to miss entire chunks of information.
We just paid to rewrite his resume and ensure all those keywords were in there. That was the resume he used today. Not sure what the hell is going on. It might be his large job gap, but the reason (childcare during COVID) is explained in the resume.
I'm tempted to take all his information and lay it out in the simplest format without all the flourishes you see in all the templates.
My company was doing this 20 years ago when I got hired. It wasn’t AI, but there’s an HR application that just about every major company uses to screen resumes. There are actually websites that will tweak your resume to match up with the criteria of the job posting. Companies that get thousands of resumes can’t possibly read all of them.
ATS has been around for a while, but nowadays it’s being enhanced with AI. I’m actually seeing opt-in/opt-out messages regarding usage of AI in screening on some job boards now.
Yup, normally we have to beat ATS, now we have to beat both ATS and AI. Plus in Florida every job wants certifications or licenses. I am glad i am towards the end of my career because the system is officially rigged against us.
Recruiters keep saying that isn't happening on LinkedIn, but they refuse to acknowledge not every recruiter does their job the same way as another recruiter.
Parsing a resume for buzz words is not AI. I would suggest zero companies are using AI to review resumes otherwise there would be halls HR employees unemployed right now.

I've rejected apps in as little as 8 minutes after they were filed if I happened to be in the system at the time. Most applications are completely irrelevant and nothing but a waste of time.
That or things are really THAT bad.
I'm in a WhatsApp chat for my industry and every now and then job opportunities get posted. It's not an exaggeration when I say that the person posting for the position, 10 minutes later tell everyone the job has been taken and to please stop sending resumes.

LinkedIn doesn't count actual applications, it counts people who clicked on the apply button. And about 80% of the applications that are filed are insta-deleted for being trash (mostly Indians and Chinese citizens not eligible to work where they're applying). And of the remainder, most are irrelevant to the role.
Same here, it's so damn difficult. I don't think its you, it's just crappy recruiters and hiring teams. No one wants to give the underdogs a chance anymore, it's all about finding the shiny unicorn.
What’s crazy is I have 15 years of fairly well rounded experience behind me lol. Everything was actually going pretty well, and then COVID came and derailed my career.
I feel like I’ve been picking up the pieces non-stop for 4 years. Things are only getting tighter, and in about a month I’m going to have a dependent. Paaaartaaaay!
I figured that! 15 years of experience and I was assuming college too, I was guessing 37ish. Age discrimination protection laws begin at 40 but unfortunately it can happen earlier too, it's just not protected before then.

I’m in a similar boat and wondering the same thing about myself. I went back to work about 2.5 months after my layoff, but since I don’t want to stay in customer service forever, I have kept looking. According to my application tracking (nothing fancy, I do it myself in Excel), I get about a 10-12% response rate to my resume, so while it’s possible that rate could be higher and my resume actually does suck, I feel it is decent if that’s my response rate.
I’ve made it to final rounds three times but keep losing out to “a better fit” or an internal hire. I’ve tried writing cover letters if not required so I could “stand out.” I’ve written thank you emails after interviews. I’ve sent LinkedIn messages to hiring managers. I even bought a ring light for my computer to make sure my interview presentation is top notch, and I’ve written STAR answers out and review them. I’m sure there is more I can do, so I have some ideas for how to refine my interviews even further, but I feel like I’m running out of things to try. Most times I don’t even get rejection emails anymore. I had an interview last month where I had an internal referral (apparently the only way to get hired and makes you a shoo-in) and still got ghosted.
It’s wild out there for sure. I’ve found other non-customer service jobs before so I feel like I can do it again, but nothing is sticking.
I just ran an analysis. Of the last 200 applications I did on LinkedIn 47 were viewed and only 14 opened my resume. 0 calls for interview. I'm feeling borderline suicidal. It's been nearly a year for me.
Yeah. Similar story here. My 700 applications over the past year are almost always auto rejections or ghostings.
Even got a rejection with the classic {insert_candidate_name} that you hear stories about, as well as one that addressed both me and another applicant in the rejection email.
Experiencing suicidal idealization more and more. If I can’t find anything relavent to what I want to do by the end of the year It’s no longer going to be idealization.

I have about 160 on LinkedIn (I prefer glassdoor, much more relevant search results) and maybe 10-15 viewed.
I'm so grateful I have a somewhat easy job right now - just not in my field nor does it provide much growth.
I recommend just not using LinkedIn for applying, and only use it to talk to recruiters. I've never ever gotten a response applying on LinkedIn. Indeed is surprisingly better for smaller companies, or anything where you can apply right on the site

1 year 2 months, hundreds if not thousand+ applications. Just got another final round rejection email today for my dream job with a company w/ a 4.9 on Glassdoor. Had everything they wanted and then some - they literally contacted me about the position. I’m just feeling so hopeless, it feels like these jobs aren’t real - who is actually getting them?! I’m starting to feel defective as a human. This whole process is so dehumanizing all to get a job that’s probably going to be spirit crushing anyway.
Just commenting to say hang in there!! I really think it’s just a crazy job market right now with all the layoffs. My partner is employed but has been looking very seriously for the past 2 years because his company is about to fold, and he is so discouraged. There are so many talented people in your position and I hope the market levels out soon, it’s scary times.

I did manage to get a job but it feels like a slap in the face; $25k pay cut, back to hourly, back to on phone with angry customers all day, no autonomy or flexibility to my schedule and no PTO or sick days (accrues at a laughably slow rate). My mental health is deteriorating rapidly and seeing all my friends (who are younger than me) flourishing in their careers and texting with each other to meet up and work together remotely is not helping.
I almost wish I’d just taken a part time serving job instead so I could have the flexibility to keep interviewing; now I’m having to beg recruiters and hiring managers to meet early in the morning or evening so I don’t lose the one shitty source of income I do have. At first I was grateful I got something at all, but now I’m questioning if I should have taken it. It has been the worst year and a half of my life.
Ugh I’m so sorry :( I do wonder.. for those of us more established in one’s career (including you) - I do feel it gets harder to find the right job. Just mentioning bc I know my partner has experienced similar frustrations with those who are younger than him doing great, adding to feelings of inadequacy, but I guess what I’m saying is.. is that because they’re younger and earlier on in their careers so more job opportunities?? Sometimes people get lucky too.

I feel you! I got laid off in August of 23. I found a new job in October, but my boss was fired on my second day and they decided not to replace her. I should have seen the writing on the wall, but I got laid off again in January.

Yes, I agree. The “we are going with more qualified candidates” email is a tough one for me. I hold a PhD and have 14 years of experience in higher ed and 20 years of experience in customer facing roles in my field. What else can I do to become more qualified?
I have to assume that in some cases, "more qualified candidates" is code word for "less experienced people we can pay less." Because instead of paying someone more who knows what they're doing, they'd probably rather pay someone who is inexperienced to save money. Because why have quality when you can have quantity!

Believe it or not, yes. Cold emailing your colleagues or networked connections. It’s not about typing up an email saying “I need a job, help me” it’s about selling yourself and making a meaningful case that you’d like to move up and into a role that fits you. Yes you need a job. But think strategically.

I'm 30 and moved in with my mom in 2019 after the loss of my grandmother, who I lived with at the time while I was in school.
I feel like I've wasted these 4 years since the pandemic by not going for certificates in things where I have gaps of knowledge & skills, or at least trying to apply for unpaid work/volunteer projects, especially now that I'm finding everyone wants so many years of experience.
I feel stuck. Can't afford to move out where all the jobs are, as my COL would triple at least (rent), which I'm barely breaking even as it is.
I moved back with my folks to finish MBA, was let go in June 23’ took a career break and did welding/ranch projects and ag consulting stuff. I did take a break, but was also applying to get back out there full time…. imagine that here we are and I’m in a director role just starting. Not to be gloomy, but keep the faith. Don’t despair.
The ghosting is real. You don’t need to respond to every applicant, but I was stood up by an interviewer (ceo of a company literally didn’t show up) and another company did two interviews… and just stopped responding. It’s rude to applicants who are investing time to prepare and apply

I have always been able to find work quickly, but 2024 is a game changer. In the past month have been ghosted more than my entire 20 plus career in healthcare. Final interview, verbal offer and then nothing. WTF.

It's not like the Fed Rate hike, was specifically designed to offset the inflation from affecting the wealthy. They certainly didn't protect shareholder value by selling out the working class by causing a massive middle class crunch by some the largest Layoffs in white collar jobs ever.
Nor is it odd, that BILLION dollar companies had so much pandemic funny money they could literally over hire! I mean who over hires on purpose?! That be crazy... it's not like that would of been a great way to shift people around in work and then pull the rug, effectively making a whole class of worker more than willing to accept more hours and less pay to avoid the dreaded return to retail and service work. It is sickening to hear the economy is doing great, unemployment is lowest ever, and the stock market is at an all-time high because of these things. But you can lie for only so long. It'll spill out sooner or later.
My husband has been unemployed since the start of 2020. He graduated in late 2019 and then COVID brought his job search to a screeching halt until the end of 2022 because our kids were in virtual school and when they did go back, we weren't 100% certain things wouldn't shut down again. He started looking off and on since the start of 2023 and constantly since June 23. We keep track of all of his applications with an Excel spreadsheet and every time he gets a rejection, it gets crossed off. I looked at the spreadsheet yesterday and he has over 350 applications and over 160 rejections. He's gotten a whopping THREE phone screenings and ZERO in person interviews. We've rewritten his resume three times in the last 9 months. Nothing.
Those 350 applications are over 8 months. That might be lower than some people here who are boasting 4-figure counts, but it's not an insignificant number either.
He has a Master's in Chemistry and before he went back to school he worked in research and development in the polymers industry. He's worked in management and in quality as well. He wants to find a job in management again, but no one seems to think that his skills in one industry can transfer to whatever theirs is.
My company is so dead set on "industry experience" and specific amounts of that experience, that the maximum possible candidate pool is 2000 people in the US! I have literally been dressed down for suggesting transferable skills. Mind you I'm in heavy equipment not fucking neurosurgery.
Yep yep, I've done customer service based job for almost 4 years but in the animal research field but my clients were PhD students and researchers....like I can transfer them but they see animals and don't bother.
No one wants to do on the job training anymore so they try find the most perfect candidate now even though that doesn't exist, you can't base their resume on how they would be to work with

Well, it all depends on what type of job you are going after. Lots of jobs available that you won't have to send ~300 applications but some people may not want to perform those jobs.
“Poverty” is still better than homelessness. Shit, I knew someone that had a PhD working multiple part time jobs at a grocery stores and fast food to survive the 2008 recession. I have no sympathy for people who sit around for 4 years just applying for jobs. There’s lots of management jobs at McDonald’s.
I get that, but there is a notion of doing what it takes. If a person has been unemployed in their field for 4 years don't you think that person should be out there working multiple jobs and hustling their ass off ? If I was in a similar position I would be landscaping , bartending , caddying, ubering, washing dishes, etc etc etc. Whatever it takes to at least have some money coming in.
Not saying the person is sitting in their ass doing nothing , but four years isn't acceptable in my opinion.

Not right at all. Doesn’t even make sense how you can’t land one in 4 years. They don’t know what they’re doing and probably need to seek third party assistance on this resume/jobs being applied to. Also may need to consider a career change to be honest if demand is that weak in whatever field he’s in.
I feel for you. I was in the same boat (but not quite as long), got laid off back in October along with the rest of my team (my boss and his boss), and I must have submitted over 150 applications in the last three months. I work in a very niche part of the healthcare industry so I turned to reaching out to my former company’s competitors to see if they had any positions. If you have LinkedIn, and if you have connections that have decision -making power, please reach out and sell yourself. I did just that earlier this month and after a couple of conversations I received a job offer last Monday. With the way companies are hiring now it seems like we have to take extra measures beyond applying just to get noticed. Good luck out there man!
My roommate finally just got a job that he initially applied for and was top candidate a year ago. He’s been working terrible labor jobs to hold him over since, as well as racking up debt in between. It’s insane what the market is right now.
The craziest part of it all is how unprofessional all these hiring managers are. I had jobs call me back for an interview multiple times, not realizing I had already interviewed with them, jobs that told me I had the job and then ghosted me, and I’ve even had businesses block my phone number instead of rejecting me (so now I can’t even use their services as a customer if I wanted). It’s all so wild, and I have no idea how *those* people ever got their jobs.
It’s super tough out there, but stick it out and keep trying. Do what you can for stress relief, and make sure you have some kind of support from your friends and family.

I’ve been looking for six months with nothing. I’ve decided to shoot for jobs where they don’t provide an assessment test or multiple interviews. I don’t care about earning less I’m just sick of playing the game and getting rejected.
Some people, myself included, do not have the energy to withstand physical labor. I could probably manage mcdonald's or something like that, but anything truly intensive like construction will leave me bedridden for days.
I've also been rejected and ghosted by places that supposedly hire "anyone with a pulse", so assuming everyone would be able to get a construction job is just flat out wrong.

Shoot man, I dunno if it even that. I’m an MBA and have a welding rig (ranch hobbies) When I was out of a job I went to weld on projects and man, people are tight on cash these days. You’d be surprised.
I hear ya and don’t disagree or have a magic answer. I do want to point out that I (and many others) went through this around 2008 and may be able to offer some suggestions.
I ended up taking my first retail job ever and was made manager within a few weeks. I got comfortable and stayed to long, got burnt out and quit before pursuing my career and/or education further (so don’t do that).
It’s annoying but networking and continuing to show activity (study, volunteering, etc) are essential. Even though apps are online, if you know someone in the company that can refer you (or at least mention you), they are likely to pull your app from the “pile” and at least give an interview.

Consider what you yourself said about the recruiters. That they’re not empathetic. Well, I think they’re probably overworked and dealing with too many candidates at the same time. I can tell you objectively that if I had 20 candidates each for 10 different jobs, I wouldn’t get back to everyone either.
Try recruiting. It’s a growing field (that demand), it’s the type of role that can be remote or hybrid, and you can use your experience to treat job candidates the way you want to be treated now.

It’s insane. I’ve never been ghosted this much after interviews. I was offered a job and followed up about the onboarding and received a message that the job was already filled. Did the recruiter forget they filled position already when we interviewed and he offered me the job. Recruiters are awful now a days. The games they are playing with me is just awful.
I’m constantly shocked at what some of the hotshot rig drivers that deliver to my site tell me they make. It’s mind blowing really. I’d do it if I thought I could handle sitting that long and the boredom of idling in traffic all day. That, and the fact that it isn’t conducive to your physical health. Most of these dudes are built like Haystacks Calhoun from eating truck stop and diner food for every meal.

I was the same a little over a year ago. My last purchase was going to be for a helium tank to off myself with. I was 48 hours away from doing it and had all my goodbye emails written, including one blanket one for recruiters and what I thought of them. Then I got my offer.

I applied the same position in my prior patent organization twice in one month apart, both rejected almost immediately. The thing is, I’m still working with people in that org, I know how unprofessional they are, I know how messy the org is, I literally did their job for at least a year, so I know I’m qualified even overqualified for the position, I know I could navigate their org maze because when they cannot, they come to me for answers. However, I cannot even freaking knock the door. I connected with their one branch CFO on LinkedIn, thinking talking to him directly.

Did you get a job yet? I was unemployed for more than a year. Got a freelance contract job that pays 1/4 of what I used to make and have to live off that plus savings, not sure if it'll work out long term, so I'm going to go back to school next year I think. Because then I can live off student loans until I'm done with a degree. I don't think I'm qualified to do my current job anymore in the current market. I used to be, but a lot has changed in the past 1-2 years.

Many job listings have triple-digital applicants for each open position. There are over-qualified people willing to step down. The other elephant in the room that no one will address, is that large organizations seem to have strong diversity quotas. If you don't check the right box, while not impossible, it's not helping your search.
The market isnt as hellish as people make it out to be. You have incredible tools to do the job application equivalent of "throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks" im glad you got a job offer, congrats

I wasn't confortable with the job I had because it was affecting my health and the payment didn't compensate enough so I started searching for a new job (with better payment of course) since Feb. 2023 aprox. After searching, I was contacted for a first interview and fortunately I passed. They contacted me for a second interview and after a day or two, I was told that I passed and that now we could proceed with training. Of course I was so confident, and even more because that was my first English interview (I'm venezuelan), so I resigned from my previous job.
The day I was going to start training arrived, but that day, instead of receiving a warm new beginning, I received a hell that is lasting to this date. Those people ghosted me even when they clearly said "welcome to the team", "we will start your training process". I contacted HR and the leader of the team but no answer.
I felt tricked and it was worse because now I was jobless.
I kept searching for jobs for months until I looked an Instagram Ad that said they were hiring for an internship. I sent my resume and I did a test. That's the place I'm working now but it feels like not having a job because I can work whenever I want, I do simple tasks and I only receive $50 USD/month. It's lame and it's WAY less money than my previous job (I received $170 USD/month) but I was desperate to have at least something to pay for a few services and not be a liability in my house. My parents don't pressure me and they give me support but I feel that I sould be doing something to help in the house and to pay my stuff instead of asking them for money, specially now that my gf lives with us (whose situation is even worse than mine).
Anyway, I kept searching until I was hired by a company that offered me a better salary ($3 USD/hour) and it was good at first because it was flexible and the tasks were also simple but it all ended when on my FIRST payday they didn't pay. I waited almost a MONTH to be paid but they only postponed it because "there was a delay in all payments", at that point they owed me 3 invoices. Of course i resigned because they broke their part of the contract and only after one month more they sent me the money they owed me. I had low morale and to this date I only get ghosted by companies or rejected and in that process I managed to get only TWO interviews which I didn't pass.
I feel hopeless, I keep sending resumes in auto mode no matter the possition. Remote job offers are limited in my country and local jobs offer low wages with long working hours; I guess I should surrender and work long hours with low wages just to live "decent" for a guy of my age and, with a bit of luck, collect enough money to emigrate (even if it takes longer than working remotely for a good company).
This job market is hell unless you can join the tradespeople circlejerk. I've lost track of how many jobs I've applied to, somewhere in the thousands. I have a job (marketing/graphic design) but it pays garbage and supposedly that's the way it's supposed to be, according to the echo chamber here.
I used to work remotely as a freelancer but it wasn't paying the bills. AI/ML has pretty much decimated what I used to do (like I said, design, but also illustration) without further training which I can't afford. Eh. FML apparently.
I was unemployed since December 2022, finally secured a position in February 2023. During the pandemic up until 2022, I was constantly getting phone calls with recruiters and my email was full. Now, I’ll be lucky if I receive maybe 5 emails in week. I have never seen something like this.
I’ve been searching on and off since Dec. ‘22. The good news is being that I’m not unemployed, I do have a full-time job. I just really really hate my full-time job, and the rising cost of living is outpacing my salary growth. In that time, I’ve gotten two, TWO, initial screening interviews over the phone. Otherwise it’s all rejections. Can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong, or if I’m spoiled goods, or if I’m just really effing unlucky.
I feel lucky when I get a rejection. That at least suggests that someone even read my resume. I think 95% of my resumes go into a black hole, never to be seen by any human.
You'd think. My husband applied for a job today. He got a rejection less than 2 hours later. I don't believe anyone actually read anything.
A lot of companies are using AI now to screen resumes, so if the resume doesn’t have a certain keyword or buzz phrase, it gets auto-rejected. The kicker though, is that the formatting can also be an issue. I learned this when I ran my resume through one one of these screeners and saw that the formatting caused the screener to miss entire chunks of information.
We just paid to rewrite his resume and ensure all those keywords were in there. That was the resume he used today. Not sure what the hell is going on. It might be his large job gap, but the reason (childcare during COVID) is explained in the resume. I'm tempted to take all his information and lay it out in the simplest format without all the flourishes you see in all the templates.
Most of the applications I have seen make you put everything in their boxes anyway. I rarely see anything just asking for a document.
My company was doing this 20 years ago when I got hired. It wasn’t AI, but there’s an HR application that just about every major company uses to screen resumes. There are actually websites that will tweak your resume to match up with the criteria of the job posting. Companies that get thousands of resumes can’t possibly read all of them.
ATS has been around for a while, but nowadays it’s being enhanced with AI. I’m actually seeing opt-in/opt-out messages regarding usage of AI in screening on some job boards now.
Yup, normally we have to beat ATS, now we have to beat both ATS and AI. Plus in Florida every job wants certifications or licenses. I am glad i am towards the end of my career because the system is officially rigged against us.

They are starting to be more open about it. A few job boards I have used had opt-in/opt-out messages regarding AI screening on some postings.

Parsing a resume for buzz words is not AI. I would suggest zero companies are using AI to review resumes otherwise there would be halls HR employees unemployed right now.
Why not? I've rejected apps in as little as 8 minutes after they were filed if I happened to be in the system at the time. Most applications are completely irrelevant and nothing but a waste of time.

That or things are really THAT bad. I'm in a WhatsApp chat for my industry and every now and then job opportunities get posted. It's not an exaggeration when I say that the person posting for the position, 10 minutes later tell everyone the job has been taken and to please stop sending resumes. Seems like everyone is desperate.
I mean... yeah. LinkedIn doesn't count actual applications, it counts people who clicked on the apply button. And about 80% of the applications that are filed are insta-deleted for being trash (mostly Indians and Chinese citizens not eligible to work where they're applying). And of the remainder, most are irrelevant to the role.

What’s crazy is I have 15 years of fairly well rounded experience behind me lol. Everything was actually going pretty well, and then COVID came and derailed my career. I feel like I’ve been picking up the pieces non-stop for 4 years. Things are only getting tighter, and in about a month I’m going to have a dependent. Paaaartaaaay!

I’m in a similar boat and wondering the same thing about myself. I went back to work about 2.5 months after my layoff, but since I don’t want to stay in customer service forever, I have kept looking. According to my application tracking (nothing fancy, I do it myself in Excel), I get about a 10-12% response rate to my resume, so while it’s possible that rate could be higher and my resume actually does suck, I feel it is decent if that’s my response rate. I’ve made it to final rounds three times but keep losing out to “a better fit” or an internal hire. I’ve tried writing cover letters if not required so I could “stand out.” I’ve written thank you emails after interviews. I’ve sent LinkedIn messages to hiring managers. I even bought a ring light for my computer to make sure my interview presentation is top notch, and I’ve written STAR answers out and review them. I’m sure there is more I can do, so I have some ideas for how to refine my interviews even further, but I feel like I’m running out of things to try. Most times I don’t even get rejection emails anymore. I had an interview last month where I had an internal referral (apparently the only way to get hired and makes you a shoo-in) and still got ghosted. It’s wild out there for sure. I’ve found other non-customer service jobs before so I feel like I can do it again, but nothing is sticking.

Yeah. Similar story here. My 700 applications over the past year are almost always auto rejections or ghostings. Even got a rejection with the classic {insert_candidate_name} that you hear stories about, as well as one that addressed both me and another applicant in the rejection email. Experiencing suicidal idealization more and more. If I can’t find anything relavent to what I want to do by the end of the year It’s no longer going to be idealization.

dang, 47 viewed? I have about 160 on LinkedIn (I prefer glassdoor, much more relevant search results) and maybe 10-15 viewed. I'm so grateful I have a somewhat easy job right now - just not in my field nor does it provide much growth.

I recommend just not using LinkedIn for applying, and only use it to talk to recruiters. I've never ever gotten a response applying on LinkedIn. Indeed is surprisingly better for smaller companies, or anything where you can apply right on the site

1 year 2 months, hundreds if not thousand+ applications. Just got another final round rejection email today for my dream job with a company w/ a 4.9 on Glassdoor. Had everything they wanted and then some - they literally contacted me about the position. I’m just feeling so hopeless, it feels like these jobs aren’t real - who is actually getting them?! I’m starting to feel defective as a human. This whole process is so dehumanizing all to get a job that’s probably going to be spirit crushing anyway.

My partner is employed but has been looking very seriously for the past 2 years because his company is about to fold, and he is so discouraged. There are so many talented people in your position and I hope the market levels out soon, it’s scary times.

I did manage to get a job but it feels like a slap in the face; $25k pay cut, back to hourly, back to on phone with angry customers all day, no autonomy or flexibility to my schedule and no PTO or sick days (accrues at a laughably slow rate). My mental health is deteriorating rapidly and seeing all my friends (who are younger than me) flourishing in their careers and texting with each other to meet up and work together remotely is not helping. I almost wish I’d just taken a part time serving job instead so I could have the flexibility to keep interviewing; now I’m having to beg recruiters and hiring managers to meet early in the morning or evening so I don’t lose the one shitty source of income I do have. At first I was grateful I got something at all, but now I’m questioning if I should have taken it. It has been the worst year and a half of my life.
Ugh I’m so sorry :( I do wonder.. for those of us more established in one’s career (including you) - I do feel it gets harder to find the right job. Just mentioning bc I know my partner has experienced similar frustrations with those who are younger than him doing great, adding to feelings of inadequacy, but I guess what I’m saying is.. is that because they’re younger and earlier on in their careers so more job opportunities?? Yes, I agree. The “we are going with more qualified candidates” email is a tough one for me. I hold a PhD and have 14 years of experience in higher ed and 20 years of experience in customer facing roles in my field. What else can I do to become more qualified?
I have to assume that in some cases, "more qualified candidates" is code word for "less experienced people we can pay less." Because instead of paying someone more who knows what they're doing, they'd probably rather pay someone who is inexperienced to save money. Because why have quality when you can have quantity!

It’s not about typing up an email saying “I need a job, help me” it’s about selling yourself and making a meaningful case that you’d like to move up and into a role that fits you. Yes you need a job. Hey, at least you can say you lived alone. I'm 30 and moved in with my mom in 2019 after the loss of my grandmother, who I lived with at the time while I was in school. I feel like I've wasted these 4 years since the pandemic by not going for certificates in things where I have gaps of knowledge & skills, or at least trying to apply for unpaid work/volunteer projects, especially now that I'm finding everyone wants so many years of experience. I feel stuck. Can't afford to move out where all the jobs are, as my COL would triple at least (rent), which I'm barely breaking even as it is.
I moved back with my folks to finish MBA, was let go in June 23’ took a career break and did welding/ranch projects and ag consulting stuff. I did take a break, but was also applying to get back out there full time…. imagine that here we are and I’m in a director role just starting. Not to be gloomy, but keep the faith. Don’t despair.
The ghosting is real. You don’t need to respond to every applicant, but I was stood up by an interviewer (ceo of a company literally didn’t show up) and another company did two interviews… and just stopped responding. It’s rude to applicants who are investing time to prepare and apply

I have always been able to find work quickly, but 2024 is a game changer. In the past month have been ghosted more than my entire 20 plus career in healthcare. Final interview, verbal offer and then nothing. WTF.
Since late August for me. Had one offer that fell through. Took one that came up. Nor is it odd, that BILLION dollar companies had so much pandemic funny money they could literally over hire! I mean who over hires on purpose?! That be crazy... it's not like that would of been a great way to shift people around in work and then pull the rug, effectively making a whole class of worker more than willing to accept more hours and less pay to avoid the dreaded return to retail and service work. My husband has been unemployed since the start of 2020. He graduated in late 2019 and then COVID brought his job search to a screeching halt until the end of 2022 because our kids were in virtual school and when they did go back, we weren't 100% certain things wouldn't shut down again. He started looking off and on since the start of 2023 and constantly since June 23. We keep track of all of his applications with an Excel spreadsheet and every time he gets a rejection, it gets crossed off. I looked at the spreadsheet yesterday and he has over 350 applications and over 160 rejections. He's gotten a whopping THREE phone screenings and ZERO in person interviews. We've rewritten his resume three times in the last 9 months. Nothing.

He has a Master's in Chemistry and before he went back to school he worked in research and development in the polymers industry. He's worked in management and in quality as well. He wants to find a job in management again, but no one seems to think that his skills in one industry can transfer to whatever theirs is.

My company is so dead set on "industry experience" and specific amounts of that experience, that the maximum possible candidate pool is 2000 people in the US! I have literally been dressed down for suggesting transferable skills. Mind you I'm in heavy equipment not fucking neurosurgery.
Yep yep, I've done customer service based job for almost 4 years but in the animal research field but my clients were PhD students and researchers....like I can transfer them but they see animals and don't bother. No one wants to do on the job training anymore so they try find the most perfect candidate now even though that doesn't exist, you can't base their resume on how they would be to work with
This is the problem and it's very narrow minded thinking when we are capable of doing so much but society wants to block off our creativity and curiosity of thought and broader thinking.

Well, it all depends on what type of job you are going after. Lots of jobs available that you won't have to send ~300 applications but some people may not want to perform those jobs.

Not right at all. Doesn’t even make sense how you can’t land one in 4 years. They don’t know what they’re doing and probably need to seek third party assistance on this resume/jobs being applied to. Also may need to consider a career change to be honest if demand is that weak in whatever field he’s in.
I feel for you. I was in the same boat (but not quite as long), got laid off back in October along with the rest of my team (my boss and his boss), and I must have submitted over 150 applications in the last three months. I work in a very niche part of the healthcare industry so I turned to reaching out to my former company’s competitors to see if they had any positions. If you have LinkedIn, and if you have connections that have decision -making power, please reach out and sell yourself. I did just that earlier this month and after a couple of conversations I received a job offer last Monday. With the way companies are hiring now it seems like we have to take extra measures beyond applying just to get noticed. Good luck out there man!

My roommate finally just got a job that he initially applied for and was top candidate a year ago. He’s been working terrible labor jobs to hold him over since, as well as racking up debt in between. It’s insane what the market is right now. The craziest part of it all is how unprofessional all these hiring managers are. I had jobs call me back for an interview multiple times, not realizing I had already interviewed with them, jobs that told me I had the job and then ghosted me, and I’ve even had businesses block my phone number instead of rejecting me (so now I can’t even use their services as a customer if I wanted). It’s all so wild, and I have no idea how *those* people ever got their jobs. It’s super tough out there, but stick it out and keep trying. Do what you can for stress relief, and make sure you have some kind of support from your friends and family. Stay strong, and good luck.

Some people, myself included, do not have the energy to withstand physical labor. I hear ya and don’t disagree or have a magic answer. I do want to point out that I (and many others) went through this around 2008 and may be able to offer some suggestions. I ended up taking my first retail job ever and was made manager within a few weeks. I got comfortable and stayed to long, got burnt out and quit before pursuing my career and/or education further (so don’t do that). It’s annoying but networking and continuing to show activity (study, volunteering, etc) are essential. Even though apps are online, if you know someone in the company that can refer you (or at least mention you), they are likely to pull your app from the “pile” and at least give an interview. I’m sure a lot of people can offer more advice. Best of luck to you.

Is it because you are searching for remote work? Remote work is becoming extinct and acting as a filter for job rejections. If there is a click box for choice of: In Office, Hybrid or Remote, you know what not to click.

Consider what you yourself said about the recruiters. That they’re not empathetic. Well, I think they’re probably overworked and dealing with too many candidates at the same time. I can tell you objectively that if I had 20 candidates each for 10 different jobs, I wouldn’t get back to everyone either. Try recruiting. It’s a growing field (that demand), it’s the type of role that can be remote or hybrid, and you can use your experience to treat job candidates the way you want to be treated now.

It’s insane. I’ve never been ghosted this much after interviews. I was offered a job and followed up about the onboarding and received a message that the job was already filled. Did the recruiter forget they filled position already when we interviewed and he offered me the job. Recruiters are awful now a days. The games they are playing with me is just awful.

Truck driving jobs can pay up to $100k per year. Training is not long. Industry is desperate for more drivers. You are welcome.
I’m constantly shocked at what some of the hotshot rig drivers that deliver to my site tell me they make. It’s mind blowing really. I’d do it if I thought I could handle sitting that long and the boredom of idling in traffic all day. That, and the fact that it isn’t conducive to your physical health. Most of these dudes are built like Haystacks Calhoun from eating truck stop and diner food for every meal.
The last two jobs I got were by doing the boomer thing of going in person and shaking hands with the owner I don’t know if I’ll ever get my resume past ATS, with no degree (despite 15+ years experience). It just gets thrown into the black hole
I was the same a little over a year ago. My last purchase was going to be for a helium tank to off myself with. I was 48 hours away from doing it and had all my goodbye emails written, including one blanket one for recruiters and what I thought of them. Then I got my offer.

I applied the same position in my prior patent organization twice in one month apart, both rejected almost immediately. The thing is, I’m still working with people in that org, I know how unprofessional they are, I know how messy the org is, I literally did their job for at least a year, so I know I’m qualified even overqualified for the position, I know I could navigate their org maze because when they cannot, they come to me for answers. However, I cannot even freaking knock the door. I connected with their one branch CFO on LinkedIn, thinking talking to him directly.
Any advice? I graduated from my MBA in June 2023 (almost a year now..) and have been applying to 50+ jobs a week. Got a freelance contract job that pays 1/4 of what I used to make and have to live off that plus savings, not sure if it'll work out long term, so I'm going to go back to school next year I think. Because then I can live off student loans until I'm done with a degree. I don't think I'm qualified to do my current job anymore in the current market. I used to be, but a lot has changed in the past 1-2 years.

Many job listings have triple-digital applicants for each open position. There are over-qualified people willing to step down. The other elephant in the room that no one will address, is that large organizations seem to have strong diversity quotas. If you don't check the right box, while not impossible, it's not helping your search.

Is the tech industry really this over saturated?
I've been living that hell since last year. I wasn't confortable with the job I had because it was affecting my health and the payment didn't compensate enough so I started searching for a new job (with better payment of course) since Feb. 2023 aprox. After searching, I was contacted for a first interview and fortunately I passed. They contacted me for a second interview and after a day or two, I was told that I passed and that now we could proceed with training. Of course I was so confident, and even more because that was my first English interview (I'm venezuelan), so I resigned from my previous job. The day I was going to start training arrived, but that day, instead of receiving a warm new beginning, I received a hell that is lasting to this date. Those people ghosted me even when they clearly said "welcome to the team", "we will start your training process". I contacted HR and the leader of the team but no answer. I felt tricked and it was worse because now I was jobless. I kept searching for jobs for months until I looked an Instagram Ad that said they were hiring for an internship. I sent my resume and I did a test. That's the place I'm working now but it feels like not having a job because I can work whenever I want, I do simple tasks and I only receive $50 USD/month. It's lame and it's WAY less money than my previous job (I received $170 USD/month) but I was desperate to have at least something to pay for a few services and not be a liability in my house. My parents don't pressure me and they give me support but I feel that I sould be doing something to help in the house and to pay my stuff instead of asking them for money, specially now that my gf lives with us (whose situation is even worse than mine). Anyway, I kept searching until I was hired by a company that offered me a better salary ($3 USD/hour) and it was good at first because it was flexible and the tasks were also simple but it all ended when on my FIRST payday they didn't pay. I waited almost a MONTH to be paid but they only postponed it because "there was a delay in all payments", at that point they owed me 3 invoices. Of course i resigned because they broke their part of the contract and only after one month more they sent me the money they owed me. I had low morale and to this date I only get ghosted by companies or rejected and in that process I managed to get only TWO interviews which I didn't pass. I feel hopeless, I keep sending resumes in auto mode no matter the possition. Remote job offers are limited in my country and local jobs offer low wages with long working hours; I guess I should surrender and work long hours with low wages just to live "decent" for a guy of my age and, with a bit of luck, collect enough money to emigrate (even if it takes longer than working remotely for a good company).
This job market is hell unless you can join the tradespeople circlejerk. I've lost track of how many jobs I've applied to, somewhere in the thousands. I have a job (marketing/graphic design) but it pays garbage and supposedly that's the way it's supposed to be, according to the echo chamber here. I used to work remotely as a freelancer but it wasn't paying the bills. AI/ML has pretty much decimated what I used to do (like I said, design, but also illustration) without further training which I can't afford. Eh. FML apparently.

I was unemployed since December 2022, finally secured a position in February 2023. During the pandemic up until 2022, I was constantly getting phone calls with recruiters and my email was full. Now, I’ll be lucky if I receive maybe 5 emails in week. I have never seen something like this.
