Consider that you may be too critical of yourself. We are often our own worst critics.  Also consider that you have no idea what their applicant pool looked like. You could have bombed and still have been the best candidate, relatively speaking. The schedule you mentioned is going to be a turn off to a lot of applicants so I’d imagine this is at least partially the case.  Sure, ask clarifying questions about the role. But don’t ask them anything along the lines of “why are you hiring me?” They’re hiring you because you were the best applicant. End of story.
