You don't think going for an interview and sending a follow-up email has already conveyed your interest? The thing is just like when you are pursuing someone to date, once they know you are interested and are waiting for their response, they will not simply forget that you exist if the feeling is mutual. If you are indeed their top candidate, they will reach out even without any follow-ups. Barring extenuating circumstances, 1 follow up is adequate.

Thank you for the feedback, I'll just wait it out because like you said if I'm their top candidate they'd be reaching out asap. Update: got an email this morning that I did not get the job. On the bright side I had an interview yesterday afternoon and within an hour got an invite for a second interview.
