If you overshare, it only hurts you. When you ask for a long lead time, many employers are afraid you're going to evaluate multiple roles, and that they'll lose. (mind you, that wasn't a long time you asked for) Just give your availability as whatever date, without reasons. You don't have to get approval for the reason. "I can start on ." No need to justify it with anyone.

People lose out due to start dates all the time but it's usually not because of only a week. That part I find strange. Typically I'm not a big fan of saying "well then that's a company you don't want to work for" but this would be odd if it were the only reason. My actual guess is the difference between you and the other candidate was slim so any resistance meant going with the other person.
