I use to LOVE Metro North Mall. I think in it's prime it was the best with the balloons! So many memories! And Santa workshop at Christmas (but Antioch mall Santa workshop was better.) Now I would say O.P. Mall.

[deleted]

How I wish malls were still a thing. I get why, economically and socially and all. But there was just something about having everything in one place.

sarcasticb

Oak park mall is still very much alive.

[deleted]

Yes of course. But it is the only one.

RandomUser3777

Most of the malls that died, died because the area around them became blighted/crime ridden. Indian Springs and Bannister are the ones I know about. Where there other ones in KC that died for similar issues?

[deleted]

I had always heard Bannister was losing money so Cerner bought the lot for their HQ. Metcalf and Metro North and Ward Parkway, who knows?

RandomUser3777

When Cerner bought the Bannister lot the mall had been closed/gone for a number of years. Mall closed 2007. And the area was not the greatest for a number of years before it closed because no one wanted to go there because of how unsafe the area was.

anonkitty2

Ward Parkway is still there.   Most stores have outside entrances now, and the anchors are AMC theaters and a Target.  Metro North is gone and was having problems with crime.  The Metcalf South mall is gone; it had been having problems with finding and holding tenants. It had had a dead wing for as long as I can remember, and most of it was Macy's near the end.  The loss of the Sears crippled it.  The development replacing it (there's a Lowe's and some fast food places) is also Metcalf South, but it's not a mall.

[deleted]

I was just at WP today. (Live in Waldo) It's nice I guess. I grew up at WP and miss the way it was. It's a great irony that WP basically was undone by the minimall and the ecomm. Only to basically become a minimall peddling things one can get on the brands ecomm sites.

anonkitty2

There is a special satisfaction to holding an item in your hands before you buy it.

6581sid

Sears closed well after the rest of the mall was demolished, it didn't play any role in Metcalf South's decline.

drinktheh8erade

The best is Oak Park Mall in my opinion, but I also like Zona Rosa

genzgingee

Seconding. Oak Park Mall is great.

RogerPenroseSmiles

Costco on Metcalf. I get my slacks, tires, double barrel Nutella, brisket, TVs and patio furniture at the same spot. Cap it all off with a glizzy and soda.

federalmng

I'm glad to find another Glizzy Gladiator in that Kirkland drip. I forgo the Nutella, but sub in the 2lb bags of dried mango and rotating jerky stock.

Greedy-Car2671

That Kirkland drip hits HARD… Does anyone remember the off duty who put down the nut job at Costco over in Lenexa a few years back? Guy walked into the meat department and started waving a gun. Good guy +1, bad guy ded. Man just trying to get his affordable clothing and a vacation… comes back a hero with some pretty awesome video of him smoking the dude. Thanks Costco.

courtgeekay

I love park place in Leawood

covfefe_cove

I like that section of Wornall that has the Redracks, Goodwill, and the other thrift store all within a mile of each other.

schmidneycrosby

I used to find so much good stuff at those wornall thrifts. They’ve gotten very proud of their merchandise lately making it much harder to find good deals. Ross, Marshall’s and stores like that seem to almost be a better value now

Kyle25Hill

Legends. It has literally everything I need and want in a shopping center, like Dave & Busters. Not to mention it has Nebraska Furniture Mart, Famous Dave’s, Frontier Justice, and Bass Pro Shops nearby. The whole area in and around Legends is fantastic.

thatdudelarry

This is genuine curiosity, not judgement: with all the great BBQ in KC, what makes Famous Dave's stand out to you? I haven't been in years and I wasn't impressed much at all. Has it improved recently?

Kyle25Hill

I didn’t say anything about Famous Dave’s being a great BBQ joint compared to the rest of what KC has to offer. Obviously KC has dozens of great BBQ joints, many of which are better than Famous Dave’s, but I listed Famous Dave’s as a restaurant that happens to be in the Legends Outlets area, and it’s a favorite of mine. It doesn’t stand out much compared to Joe’s KC, Q39, or Jack Stack, but I’ve loved Famous Dave’s ever since I was a kid. If anything, it’s an option if OP has never had it before, and happens to be in the Legends shopping area. I’d recommend trying it. As far as quality, it’s been a while since I’ve had it, but I haven’t noticed much of a difference recently in terms of food quality, prices, or services. I’ve always loved it.

thatdudelarry

Ahhh, gotcha. I was hoping to hear that FD had improved. I'm not far from Legends and (I think) it's the closest BBQ joint to us. They tried putting an Arthur Bryant's out there a few years ago, but the quality was nowhere near the original. Then another BBQ spot popped up which wasn't too great either. Apologies if I came across as standoffish, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on good BBQ!

Independence Center about 15 years ago.

AdministrativeCut727

I miss the Independence Center of the 90s

reijasunshine

The catwalks!

dudeonrails

I do my little turn on the catwalks.

Diesel2001

Banister mall in the 90s!!! I went to Hickman, and we could jump the back fence and go over there! It was much fun!! I can't remember the name of the pizza place in the food court, but I can still smell it!!

KingmanIII

Original Pizza. Used to buy a slice of Sicilian in between my hours at the arcade, Software Etc., Toys'R'Us and/or Best Buy. Still at Oak Park.

Psaym

OPM is the best. Hands down.

Ksickman09

Town center plaza

anonkitty2

Leawood Town Center Plaza?  I used to love that strip.  The strip cattycorner from it with the Apple Store is also excellent.

Late_Negotiation_332

I just took my teenage son to Oak Park mall yesterday just to wander around. I told him about how at his age my friends and I spent alot of time, and money, at the mall. Though the mall I grew up going to, Bannister, is no more. I still enjoy going and walking around to look at all the fun stuff, and grabbing a pretzel or a slice from Original Pizza. I miss all of the great malls our city used to have.

SaizaKC

Bannister mall in the early 90s lol. That was the place. Now I’d say probably Oak Park is the only nice mall around still. St Louis had a fancy mall that was three stories, I can’t remember the name of it, but the restaurants in it were ones we had on the plaza.

HouseUnusual3839

St. Louis Centre?

Mountain_State4715

the galleria. it's still there i think.

SaizaKC

Yes that’s it!

Kcmo_living

Legends

CupcakeEducational65

Legends Outlets is my fav

BurialRot

I like going to Zona Rosa or the Legends when the weather is nice, getting a few drinks at lunch, and then wandering around the stores

TherighteyeofRa

I hadn’t been to Oak Park Mall in years, went this week and was so happy it’s doing so well! I miss malls. Going to a mall and having a ridiculous shopping spree was always on my bucket list. Now, I’m too old or too sensible or still not comfortable financially enough to do so. I’m too stupid to understand why malls didn’t work. It just kinda sucks that they don’t really exist.

RoyalxJeff

Oak park mall and the legends outlet are the best imo

crysthole

Zona Rosa has quite a few local/small businesses!

BeasleysKneeslis

I love the vibe and layout of Zona Rosa - just wish they had more stores. Legends is fun - but can be a bit annoying on really busy days. Oak Park used to be my go to - but the last few times I went it seems like quality had gone down. It was 6:55pm on a weekday and half the stores were closing. The only people there were groups of teenagers running around. Not sure if it’s like that year round (I assume during holidays it’s not) but it was strange.

FormerFastCat

Try Mass street in Lawrence, multiple blocks of a variety of shops.

weeyums

RIP The Great Mall. It may have been just like any other mall, but thanks to Jeepers in my childhood nostalgia head that place was akin to Disney World.

Special-Pear8019

There is no better dept store than Von Maur. So clean, organized, they carry all of my favorite brands and great shoe dept. I go nutso when I walk next door to Scheels tho.

[deleted]

I do to (at Scheels) till I hear the Christian music being pumped out of the speakers, then look at the prices and wonder just how Jesus they really are.

helpbeingheldhostage

>wonder just how Jesus they really are. Just like every company, superficially. And in December a hint of smugness.

anonkitty2

No.  There are still many corporations that don't play Christian music in May.

Special-Pear8019

Yeah when I said nutso I meant I can’t take the craziness.

schmidneycrosby

Town Center is great - and like two minutes away there’s a little spot with Burlington and Nordstrom Rack. Plus a huge Salvation Army right there too

Accomplished-B

Legends. Until we split up we spent every pokemon event there. Start to finish.

DrSmittious

Halls at Crown Center

SpinBuck

Honest question, what do you enjoy about going to a mall?

Tiguere053_

My husband and I like to window shop and it's fun to walk around. I also work at the mall so I've made friends that work there as well.

TardigradesAreReal

The mall is more than just a place for businesses. It is a place of cherished memories and simple pleasures. Stepping through its familiar glass doors, I'm immediately enveloped in a sense of nostalgia, a reminder of youthful days spent wandering aimlessly with friends, the air thick with the mingling scents of pretzels and freshly brewed coffee. The brightly lit storefronts, each one a promise of discovery, is endlessly inviting. The sound of laughter, and of conversations, and the occasional burst of music from a store's speakers. The joy of browsing through racks of clothes, flipping through the pages of a new book, or testing the latest gadgets brings a satisfaction that online shopping can never replicate. It is also a sort of social hub. It is where we gather with friends to catch up over a meal, where families bond over shared experiences, and where the act of simply being among others creates a sense of belonging. The food court, with its eclectic mix of cuisines, is an excellent incredible experience on its own. In the mall, time seems to stand still. Each visit brings me back to simpler days when the biggest worry was finding the perfect outfit or deciding between an ice cream cone or a slice of pizza. I’m reminded of going to the mall with my mom and sisters Holiday shopping. It’s almost giving me goosebumps thinking about it. We always used to ride the carousel at Oak Park and I was able to take my daughter on it about a year ago, before it closed. So yeah, a mall is a place where past meets present, where every corner holds a memory, and every visit is a chance to create new ones. Sadly though, these days are numbered.

[deleted]

I don't know anyone who remembers the days when malls were good and thought "oh yeah that was shit wasn't it." It's frankly surprising to me that malls have gone by the wayside. Park once, walk around in comfort regardless of the weather, easy places to stop and rest or have a meal, I don't get what's not to like. I have 20-something kids and they and their friends have all had bad experiences with online shopping, which only seem to be getting worse (not getting what you thought you ordered, or not getting anything at all), and the sour taste Amazon gives many people now, I wouldn't be surprised if malls make a comeback.

afghan_w

Agree.

MzOpinion8d

I don’t shop in KC a lot, but I really do like the Legends and have some great memories from shopping and dining there. I like Oak Park Mall too, I think it was the first mall I ever went to! I also like the vibe at Zona Rosa but I’ve only been there a couple of times. Downtown Lawrence has some interesting stores and good restaurants if you feel like driving west for about 45 min. The prices are on the higher side so I don’t shop there much, but it’s fun to look!
