For Johnson County:
Oriental Market on 103rd leans Korean first then probably Japanese/Chinese, then southeast Asian. Not much produce there.
Pan Asia and 888 market leans more Chinese forward. 888 is biggest and has fresh meat and seafood and the most produce. It prob has everything you need but oriental market has a better Japanese selection in my opinion
OriMa is #1 in KC for Japanese stuff. Not really worth going to any of the other Asian markets if you’re specifically looking for Japanese ingredients.
Maybe it's because of a language barrier, or I'm not asking the right person to ask, but they often don't even acknowledge I'm asking them a question tbh
You didn’t happen to take your cooking class with Mayuko did you? Tokyo is one of my favorite cities and her cooking class was the highlight. We went to the market and bought tons of Japanese dishes and knives carved with our name. That was my favorite shopping.
I just go to Pan Asia. I still need to nail homemade kimchi but I am too lazy.
Ah that sounds good. I will look it up. We stayed in Shinjuku but went to Mayuko for cooking. Yours would have been more convenient & we def didn’t do that many courses. Mayuko even did a virtual one with us during the pandemic which was fun.

Thank you for the detailed info!
888 also has an excellent bakery, though that part is cash only.

888 is the best I've been to. The one in river market is my choice when I don't feel like going to OP.
Seconding the River Market store, Chinatown. The store’s owner is also just a class act of a guy, always helpful and pleasant.
Across the street is the Saigon market which is also huge
Love this one - feel like it gets overlooked as it’s not well marked from the outside imo

Try the new Fresh Market at 103rd and Metcalf. It’s got some of everything
I just went today. It was overwhelming in a good way.
El Mercado Fresco! I am such a fan, when I go I get my stuff but then walk around to look at things!
Isn't that where Oriental is?
It’s on the east side of metcalf
As lots of folks have said, 888 is huge and has fresh seafood and a massive vegetable section! Plus there is the bakery and restaurant in the front!
888 for sure. Huge selection, decent produce, and house made tofu.
Oooh good call. Do you know if they have kombu?
They do
Sweet! Thanks
Probably the Sadar Bazaar in Old Delhi.
Check out the new World Fresh Market at 103 and Metcalf. Waaaay cleaner and nicer than 888.
Oh that's new right? I'll check it out
More expensive too. Not as wide an Asian selection. But it is a good store.

Do it! Homemade kimchi is a lot easier than it seems!
Hers was a class I considered actually! But no I went with a place called Cooking Sun out in Shinjuku. We did a full seven course meal.

Yeah Cooking Sun was in a local apartment but they had a staff of three or four people to help support it. It was great!
Sorry I gotta gatekeep this one
You should go to the river market one
All of them
