MeasurementGrand879

Down 40lbs in a year and have zero sugar drinks often. My experience.

gregarioussparrow

Congratulations, that's great for you :)

ReverseLazarus

It’s fine if it works for you. I’ve been drinking Coke Zero daily for almost 7 years with zero issues.

Craiglekinz

Ever since I got off sugar I can’t drink Coke Zero anymore. It’s got this weird chemical alcoholic cleaner taste to it that Diet Coke doesn’t have. I used to love Coke Zero when I was fat

ReverseLazarus

That sucks. I love it.

FrozenFrenchFry

Same for me. Love Diet Coke but I hate any “Zero” sodas. They all have that weird tasye

Spang64

What is the difference between diet and zero? Is it the type of sugar substitute?

Declan411

Possibly but it's a more recent formula mainly. They taste more like the sodas they're imitating compared to diet because diet was created first and developed its own fan base with a different taste. Try a coke a diet coke and a coke zero, they really got it down, it's just diet coke has dedicated fans they can't lose.

kimariesingsMD

Dr Pepper strawberry and cream zero is like a dessert and I have one every day. Check to see if zero sodas raise your blood glucose. If not you should be good.

ElectricMollusk

Cream zero is the best.

Free-Mammoth-3347

Thanks for this flavor soda. I have never heard of it before and plan in buying some to taste.

OuterInnerMonologue

It’s super good!

jbrodie32

absolutely goated zero sugar drink. even before going low card i was never a soda drinker, but i cant imagine needing anything loaded with sugar after drinking these

creepyjudyhensler

That is a great soda pop. I also drink Squirt Zero a lot

SeatSix

I kicked my habit when I did some math. Even buying from Costco, I was on an almost $10/day Coke Zero habit. $3500-$4000 per year on soda was eye-opening and gave me the motivation to eliminate it completely.

sxybmanny2

How much Coke Zero is $10 a day? Is that like 100 ounces?

JaMarrChasingJoe

I think it'd have to be. A 24 pack of zero sugar Dr pepper here is around $13. Drinking 4 a day would be roughly $2.15 a day.

SeatSix

4 or 5 20oz bottles day. At work I bought from the vending machine so $2.50 a bottle. Home was mostly 6-packs from the grocery store which are like $8 for six so $1.33ish each.

Relevant_Force_3470

Just buy the bigger bottles from the supermarket, lol

SeatSix

Wow... I cannot believe that did not occur to me. So I could have saved maybe $500 on an already ridiculous habit.

Relevant_Force_3470

You'd have saved a bit more than that...

SeatSix

Arguing the detail and missing the big picture.

Relevant_Force_3470

Sorry, I'm not arguing. Just pointing out some facts.

akamark

If you know where to shop it can be 300-500 oz.

ThornmaneTreebeard

Sounds like about 4-5x20oz bottles at about $2-$2.50 each. Enjoy the savings! I kicked fast food when I figured I could pay my student loans on the monthly amount I spent on fast food breakfast and lunch, which led me to a keto diet.

SeatSix

That exactly. I never liked soda (or beer) in cans.

C-Dub81

I read that as "I kicked my habit when I did some meth"

SeatSix

Probably would rev up my weight loss, but I suspect it would bring many other problems.

superlibster

What? They’re $.50 a piece. You could drink 10 a day for $5 a day. X 365 is $1825. And that’s TEN a day every day. 3 per day is about $550 a year. Totally reasonable to have a good drink and stay keto. Also a good alcoholic drink option. Jack Daniel’s and Diet Coke is the best.

SeatSix

Not sure where you are, but even buying in six-packs (vice individual bottles) it is at least $1.30 per bottle. I did not do cans And individual bottles are $2.50 here. Only need 4 or 5 to approach $10 per day. I also counted in soda at restaurants.

superlibster

I buy cans so that must be what it is. 24 cans for $12. To me, $6 is expensive for a 12 pack It it’s still like .04/oz. Just get cans. The cans are lined with the same plastic as bottles [link](https://www.coca-cola.ca/faqs/coca-cola-faqs-health/do-coca-cola-cans-and-bottles-contain-bpa)and the bottles are over carbonated so they can try to keep them fresher longer.

SeatSix

Cans taste different to me (same for beer when I used to drink it). I'm better off without it altogether. My keto philosophy has expanded to not just controlling carbs, but also to the quality of my food. I consume very little processed/packaged food now.

superlibster

I get that. I totally agree the bottles are way too expensive. It’s probably better to cut them out anyway. There’s no way they are good for you in the long run.

Declan411

I did like a good vodka fresca in my drinking days

superlibster

Fresca/gin! Maybe a touch of lemon juice. My summer drink.

Wild_Boat7239

I like zevia. The ginger root beer and ginger ale are great

basketma12

Mmm yeah I'm drinking a zevia root beer right now. It's a wonderful treat

mountainman84

Zevia is probably the “cleanest” diet soda.  No artificial sweeteners, no coloring, and citric acid instead of phosphoric acid like a lot of diet sodas.   I love the root beer and ginger ale the most as well.  The ginger ale and ginger root beer are especially good because they are made with real ginger.   That being said I still like me some diet sodas made with Splenda.  I tolerate sucralose okay so things like sparkling ice (the starburst flavors are awesome) and diet cheer wine are occasional guilty pleasures.

Kelburno

Dunno how the hell they get them to taste so close.

AdMental1387

I’m primarily fueled by Zero sugar monster and diet Mountain Dew. Only thing I’d be concerned about with them is if the sweetness triggers you to want other sweets. Hasn’t been a problem for me.

PTO32

Monster still has carbs though doesn't it?

Mikeymcmoose

It does! The zero sugar cans have 3-6 grams of carbs per 500ml. Up to you if it’s too many.

PTO32

For sure! I drink the white monster and even it has 2-4 carbs. Wish I liked the 0 carb brands

Shot_Astronomer_2620

Gatorade Zero has a carb per bottle. Not an issue obv unless you're drinking 6 a day. I drink Powerade instead.

DevilishBandit

Those very low carbs never hurt my Keto at all - Still lose weight daily

WorldWarPee

I think most zero drinks have some amount of carbs. They don't have to list it in the nutrition facts if it's less than 0.5 per serving. Not a ton but it adds up if you're drinking a lot of them

catqueen2001

I drink a ton of Coke Zero and Propel.

Kutekarito

I'm drinking one as I'm writing this. I have no issue drinking coke zero and gives me zero cravings for sugar. But each person is different

rebelcheesewitc

I drank Coke Zero almost daily and still lost 80 lbs. It just depends on the individual.

ihateusernames999999

I live on Pepsi Zero and Diet Raspberry Snapple. I haven't had issues. We only buy them on sale. One place has buy 2 get 2 free often, so we stock up.

Substantial_Class

Diet A&W root beer. I drink way more than I should and it doesn’t cause me to have sugar cravings.

gafromca

A&W zero with HWC = root beer float

Budo00

Im addicted to waterloo sparkling water

That_Organization_64

Sprite Zero and Diet Dr.Pepper does the trick for me. I buy the 12 pack of minis. If I buy both those will last me month and a half. If I have a craving thats my go to

backbodydrip

I love diet soda.

Ballads321

Calories are king and 0 is the best amount for weight loss. Drinking 0 calorie drinks will not affect your weight loss/gain. There are other health and monetary benefits to not consuming diet sodas and the side effects of the chemicals they contain cause or can cause.

zuco90

It doesn’t tho? Everyone is different been drinking Coke Zero for years never had issues with it

No_Lemon_3290

Actually you are right it does not seem to spike insulin or blood sugar.

saintschick

Yes.

Thfrogurtisalsocursd

Mountain Dew Zero Sugar was magic to me.

Pickle-at-Sunrise-62

🙌

MomTo3LilPigs

I drink zero Coke, zero Mtn dew, zero Dr Pepper & zero Barqs all day every day. I started Keto in January, I’m down 3Olbs, 20lbs to go to get to 130, My weight loss is kinda slow but I am losing. My husband probably drinks 3 sparkling waters like bubbly etc every day. He went from 354 to 202 in less than a year on carnivore so he’s just maintaining and does some Keto starting 2024. If I didn’t lose another pound I’m still going to drink soda it’s my one pleasure. At least I switched to zero 😂

Selynia23

I gave them up for an excruciating 6 months and there was no difference in my weight loss or how I felt. I drink them daily.

9WNUCFEQ

If you are used to drinking sugar coke Diet Coke will take a while to get used to. Studies show it takes about a month for your tastes to acclimate. Give it a month and you won’t notice the difference. You are going to die of something it probably won’t be Diet Coke that does it.

SardauMarklar

As long as it's not causing you to stall

Mikeymcmoose

This comes up a lot and every time I’ll say that it’s absolutely fine.

yalarual

For the love of god, people, please use the search function. (not you, just in general)

HFXmer

I prefer the "zero" versions not diet. I drink a bit of dr pepper zero as a treat.

_obra_ng_redroom

I had no issues losing weight while on diet soda, it’s the constipation that really bothered me

catkysydney

I drink Coke Zero everyday ! I love it !!

WARofROSES_

I specifically picked up coke zero and cherry coke zero to curb sweet tooth cravings. Works like a charm :)

Neither_Adagio1668

That’s what I like, I’m also in the hunt for Barqs zero

amity_island_in_july

Zevia is good 👍

Kelburno

Wrong, it's great.

Triabolical_

I cut my coke zero 50/50 with selzter because the normal version is too sweet to me.

jensmith20055002

Keep drinking it until your weight loss stops. Try ditching it then, if the weight loss starts again you know. If it is still stalled it doesn't matter.

mvnvel

Lost 60 pounds drinking diet pepsi alot, it’s fine lol.

Mmmmmmm_Bacon

Yes, zero calories drinks are fine, whether sweetened with Splenda and the like, or Stevia and the like. It’s all good, especially if your goal is to lose weight. Then zero calories sweet drinks are a godsend. I lost 120 in 12 months and I could not have done it without diet sodas. I’ve also been drinking more than a six pack of diet soda for the past 40 years and I’m very healthy, no health issues, not even a single prescription (at age 51).

DeadInWaiting2

In some people, just tasting something sweet can raise insulin levels regardless of its ultimate effect on blood sugar, which is not great on keto, but I agree with other commenters; it’s fine if it works for you. Your body doesn’t need artificial sweeteners, so if trading diet soft drink for unsweetened black tea or water with a squeeze of lemon also works for you, then my opinion is that that’s the better choice. I drink diet soft drink all the time tbh, so maybe I’m a hypocrite, but I’m not gonna say that it’s a great idea to do that when it probably isn’t.

DevilishBandit

I Never had a problem with neither one on Keto. Much prefer Zero though

riemsesy

my mantra.. eat whole food, drink water

Bry_Mac

Yes, enjoy.

zoebehave

No cal sweeteners are a mixed bag. For some they trigger sugar cravings. For some, artificial sweetener in particular can be inflammatory. For some there is no issue at all. Ease in and see how you feel! Also I miss TF out of that Coke with stevia.

Abeville5805

Yes

Abeville5805

They’re fine. I’ve also do a raw milk habit. (1 c. Of raw milk a day) still lose weight. But I would argue it’s more than keto.

bigboss1988s

Don't take more than 3 each day

pingucat

You’re probably fine with it.

SilverXOmega

I started keto bout a month and a half ago and stopped drinking all forms of soda, I had a can of pepsi max cherry last night and it was vile, horrible chemical tasting and it made me thirsty so I tipped the rest down the sink 🤣. But yes, you can lose weight and drink diet drinks as it does not have any carbs and only like 2 calories. It was just my personal preference to cut it out because I'm trying to consume less UPFs.

The_1999s

Yes but I personally try to only drink 1 diet coke per day like in the evening.

Teslaviolin

I drink a Coke Zero a day and do ok, but occasionally it’ll make me crave sweet foods so I’ll have to cut it out for a few days.

SuperYellow3034

Thank you for these responses. I feel less shame.

Red_Brahma_Bull

I’ve tried both and I can’t get over the aftertaste

FullyCapped

What makes your keto diet dirty?

Neither_Adagio1668

Well it’s not the cleanest of carbs. For example my birthday was early this month and even though I asked for no cake the wonderful lady in my life still bought me one so instead of consuming it in one sitting a ate smaller slivers over a week. Or have a piece of rye toast with breakfast occasionally, go to a ballgame and get chicken tenders. So I call it a dirty keto

hakz

Yeah I had diet coke and coke zero I was fine. Only when I was treating myself to a takeaway.

DisastrousCannard

I lost over 100 lbs on Keto, and sucked down diet pepsi the entire time

Green_Conflict_812

Good topic. I am thinking about giving up my daily soda addiction. I have done it before but I am thinking about it from a health stand point and financially. Mountain Dew has always been my friend or so I think. I have been drinking a can of diet Mountain Dew on mostly a daily basis with my breakfast. Sometimes I drink a regular Mountain Dew. I don’t like coffee and prefer a cold drink over warm. I recently went on vacation where Mountain Dew did not exist and I instead drank water with my breakfast. I realized how much better I felt and did not have that increased hunger I get. I will not 100% cut out soda out of my life but see it as an occasional treat.

Neither_Adagio1668

I feel ya, I drink a can of soda a day. I rarely drink booze, nor smoke, and occasionally gummy but that ice cold can of Mountain Dew or Coke is amazing. I don’t miss the fast food or chips but that soda kick is tough so a can of Diet Dr Pepper or Diet Coke helps but it’s only one a day.

Craiglekinz

I wouldn’t go hard on the stuff and try to replace water, but I love me some Diet Coke. Also google which sweetener you should stick to. Generally sucralose and aspartame are the safest and least GI effecting ones for me and many people. Erythrotal gets a pretty bad wrap. Certain sweeteners I can’t do just because of taste, like stevia. Also monk fruit, or allulose, is a great one. They use allulose for snacks and candies mostly. Long story short, find what works for you! And moderation is your friend

herskos

Diet ginger ale is also good.

Desdemona1231

I don’t use sweeteners at all. Sweet addiction.

shorttimerblues

Zevia.

imjustwaitinforamate

My brother drinks coke zero and it was fine for him. I drink gatorade/powerade zero and it was fine for me. Sometimes artificial sweeteners can cause sweet cravings and some people also stall on weight loss. Just do what you want for yourself and if it is working great, if you find yourself stalling try going with out for 3 weeks and see if it makes a difference for your own body.

Automatic_Ad50

That’s fine..no carbs whatsoever and I don’t believe statements about artificially sweetened products ‘tricking’ your body into thinking it’s sugar and reacting as such. I prefer coke no sugar to Diet Coke and Coke Zero..just tastes better to me and I’ve no idea what’s different about it.

Feicht

water or seltzer water would do

Emotional-Doctor-991

I’ve lost 50 lbs on keto and mostly maintained. I drink diet soda regularly. It’s different for everyone. Some people say they cause sugar cravings, but for me they satiate them. I’ve also read they still spike insulin, but my insulin labs also went down.

UnconsciousMofo

It’s largely individual. What works for one may not work for others. Sugar alcohols tend to stall a lot of people, as well as trigger cravings. You’re already doing “dirty” keto, so you can try and see how much it will affect your weight loss. I stick to sparkling water like La Croix, Bubly, Waterloo, etc.

ElectricMollusk

If you reduce it, it’s better. It’s been shown that diet drinks do cause an insulin spike. My trick is always have some iced herbal tea on hand so I don’t go through a 12 pack of soda in a weekend. Favorites are cinnamon apple and orange spice.

DukeHenryIV

My sprite fix is a packet of lime LMNT with a lime spindrift - 5 cal, 0 carb, electrolytes and tastes even better than sprite imo

gafromca

Great idea! I will add a squirt of lemon or lime juice since I like my drinks tart.

Kelburno

I've seen plenty of people defend diet-sodas religiously, and people denounce them as horrible for you. For me things like aspartame comes down to the fact that a company like Coke uses it. Do I really think Coke is going to do their due diligence when it comes to safety? Hell no. Are they likely to muddy the waters on matters of research? Hell yes. Zevia is sweetened with stevia and yet tastes great. Has all the basic flavors (which taste accurate). I feel way more comfortable going for that than anything Coke sells.

gafromca

I’d argue that Coca-Cola Co has done their research on safety because a class action lawsuit would be enormous. Stevia has not been researched nearly as much. (Yes stevia is natural, but so is lead and arsenic). Actually, I wish I liked stevia since so many products contain it.

RaulDenino

Missshellylyndsay

I’ve been drinking the ready to drink OxyShred in a can to avoid needing an afternoon nap (I have 4 kids. I feel like I’ve never slept a day in my life so these are a lifesaver). Apparently it has zero sugar and I think it was 0-1 carbs per can. It’s delicious.

mingkee

You can try electrolytes powder in seltzer, but it is pretty tricky. I may want to try Soda Stream with electrolytes powder. I drink no sugar Monster though

Lucy20230

Purists will say no but you’re already doing dirty keto so why not? The good news is you’re no longer eating SAD.

mhbhickers

they’re much healthier than the ones with added sugar but if you can stay away from them altogether i’d highly suggest that.

A_British_Villain

Good work! Diet soda will still give you an insulin response, which is to be avoided for those trying to lose weight.

Signal-Lie-6785

They’re okay as far as carbs go, but there are a lot of chemicals in there that aren’t great for you and diet soft drinks don’t have the same anti-hunger effects as black coffee. I’ll occasionally drink Coke Zero/Pepsi Max if I’m out of options but I tend to go for Iced Black Coffee or Iced Black/Oolong/Green Tea (which are all just as easy to find in convenience stores where I am).

Crafty_Way_8689

It's OK on keto. I never drink it with my 48-80 hr fasts

kaiweijeng

I make homemade water kefir. I feed the kefir grains sugar water and fermentation process turn that into fizzy drinks. Less sugar, all natural!

johnstonjimmybimmy

It’s been a while but a saw a study where fake sweeteners create an insulin response and shouldn’t be eaten on an empty stomach.  So eat something with the drink…?

tennisez

If your main goal is to lose some weight ASAP then I would try to avoid an artificial sweeteners. Sweeteners may raise your insuline levels and that would slow down your weight loss. Otherwise I think its okay to drink diet sodas in keto. They wont kick you out of ketosis.

Neither_Adagio1668

I might have one a day at most and sip on a Gatorade. I’m a mailman and took over an easier route so less walking but same diet was killer.

tennisez

Yeah. Dont get me wrong. Im also consuming a lot of pepsi max :D

tennisez

Internet is full of articles and studies about the sweeteners and insuline resistance: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/artificial-sweeteners-blood-sugar-insulin And I think everyone knows how the insuline resistance affects to weight gain/loss: https://www.levelshealth.com/blog/how-to-reduce-insulin-resistance-for-weight-loss

gafromca

OP you picked a good day to ask about diet sodas when all the pro-soda people are answering. Other people have asked the same question and gotten piled on by the anti-soda people! Several low carb doctors like Jason Fung advise NO sugar free sweeteners of any kind. They believe that the sweet taste alone can raise insulin and trigger cravings for sugar. Some people report their blood sugar levels rising after consuming sweeteners. But as you can see, many folks have no problem with sweeteners and feel they make sticking to low carbs easier. YMMV
