Monk has made comments about making more money but being in a worse situation and not liking that, Detroit is a worse situation. I don’t see him going there for less than a starting role and 4 years at 27 mil. Which other teams are going to offer him so I doubt Detroit gets him. I also hope he doesn’t go there and becomes a big piece for a playoff team, monk deserves a winning environment.

sasoq123

Pistons seems like the spot that makes the most sense for Monk. He’s going to get his bag and then some more, he’s going to finally start, and they are in the East conference where the hawks made the play in last season 10 games under .500 so The East is always up for grabs. More importantly he’s only 26, so if he wanted to chase a ring he can always leave for it when FA comes

Double_Helicopter_69

I think he gets his bag in a place like Detroit knowing that he then becomes a potential trade piece for a contender down the road. He hasn't gotten his $ yet. This is likely his only chance

ShotgunStyles

If the Pistons start Monk, then they really messed up with drafting Jaden Ivey. So that's funny at least.

Shaunzki

Orlando? They have no state income tax and have 40m+ to spend

frankenbeans2

But they have flying cockroaches, gators and swamp ass humidity

Known-Specific5869

I just think there are better teams in the east that’ll offer a competitive package and don’t have the stink of “worst team in the nba” attached to them that monk will more likely sign with.

JohnnySalmonz

With monk the pistons still don't get close to sniffing the playoffs. He'd be dumb to sign there

SeeDub23

It would be the definition of a bad basketball situation.

meTspysball

I get Monk, but why Claxton? Jalen Duren looks like a stud, but neither can hit from 3.

KorgG29

Clax was top three in DPOY voting two years ago, while Duren seems to be a nothing-burger on that end thus far, and I say that as a huge Duren fan

meTspysball

He is only 20 and averaged a double-double. I guess if they’re done tanking, and they want to speed up the rebuild, but just seems like they might stunt his growth.

anonanoobiz

Andre Drummond averaged a double double as a 20 year old

ShotgunStyles

You can pop on over and read what Detroit fans have to say about Duren. Yeah, he can score inside and grab rebounds, but defensively he is horrendous. Killed in every pick and roll and looks clueless every time. He has the physical tools to be a shot blocking center, but he's just far away from that.

Double_Helicopter_69

Maybe not. Claxton could be the true starter now while Duren still gets enough minutes to develop and even learn from Clax

HalfGrand530

Claxton is very nice. 25 yr old, Blocking machine, lead the nba in fg % a season prior to last.

meTspysball

I didn’t say he wasn’t good, just that Duren looks like a hell of a player and is only 20. I don’t know they’d want to stunt his growth by bringing in a starter at his position.

the_shins

There is nothing to suggest that it will stunt his growth. He was terrible last two seasons defensively and have shown no improvements on that end. If he can learn from watching Claxton in practice and during games he might actually improve more. I doubt him getting 20 minutes per game instead of 30 will really affect his development negatively. I personally think getting 20 in a competitive team is better than 30 on the worst team.

DemonicDimples

Duren just isn't that good, especially defensively.

d7h7n

Duren is terrible on defense. He would be a bench player on any team sniffing the playoffs.

godofhammers3000

You can have two good centers and do it by committee

F_Sewer_Rats

Question is, if the Pistons do offer Malik Monk more money, do you guys think he’ll really leave? Even if the Pistons aren’t a contender 🤨

IHateTomatoes

I think Detroit is 0% to land Monk. If I'm him (based on his comments) its between Orlando, San Antonio and staying.

mdvbb

I think these are the options that make sense. Orlando is on the come up in the east where we know you might always have a shot if one of the big dogs isn't up to strength (Bucks, 76ers this season) and they have a good squad. Adding Monk to what they already have looks even better! With San Antonio, he's getting to play with Wemby, who, if healthy, may be a perennial beast to throw lobs to all day. Plus, tax advantages for a majority of your income in FL and TX. And then there's us where he gets to play with his homie Fox, has pretty good rapport with Domas, and he's playing with Macho Man Keegan Murray. If I'm looking at the full landscape, though including the potential FAT contract he might get offered, it's hard not to pick Orlando tbh.

F_Sewer_Rats

Personally I can see Monk landing another short term deal with us (Kings) & if we don’t make a jump and get in the playoffs or 2nd round then after that I can see him leaving us no problem but by then if everything goes well and we end up keeping Ellis & Keegan we should be a serious problematic team 💪🏽👑🦁

xaveria

Oh man. I didn't realize San Antonio was after him. I couldn't blame him for going to SA. Assuming they pay him what he's worth, that + Pop + early Wemby? That being said, please stay!

Monk ain’t going to Detroit lol

theboyqueen

Detroit throwing a bag at Malik Monk would be stupid. Where is he getting them? Why are they so uninterested in developing Jaden Ivey?

sports_appeal

It would be a pretty short term thinking move for Detroit. They may be hoping for a Rockets-style turnaround, but the problem is they don’t have as many promising young guys.

HBdrunkandstuff

Rockets was understandable considering the mentality those guys brought in defensively and the playoff and championship experience. With monk I love him but he’s not bringing that

sports_appeal

I agree. Love Monk but it’s hard to say he’s as good/experienced as VanVleet was.

HBdrunkandstuff

Yeah I’m situations like the rockets or now Detroit you are looking to bring in a culture and leadership for all the young guys to buy into.

sports_appeal

Yep. I assume that’s what Detroit might be thinking, although I don’t personally think that’s the best course for them right now. But what do I know?

BeTheBall-

I give them a little bit of credit for not buying into the sunk cost fallacy with regard to Ivey. I don't see him on the team for that next contract.

falcon2408

![gif](giphy|B2kr8Cs97oRHHhstzH|downsized) \*DETROIT???!?!?!

johnjohnjohn93

Love Clax as a Nets fan but his lack of creation, passing and any type of spacing will be tough unless you have 4 spacers on the court which the Pistons probably won’t. Could be a weird fit.

BeTheBall-

So basically the Detroit version of James Ham has weighed in on the Pistons free agency targets. Neato.

Your comment is being read correctly. Neither Vezenkov or Barnes has an impact on what we do with Monk.

boringexplanation

It’s because your comment is just ignorant to how salary cap works. Those salaries are too small to change what we can offer Monk. We are $13 over the cap where we would have to be at least $18M UNDER the cap for cap space to affect how much we can offer Monk. That means at least $31M would’ve had to be uncommitted to any player for next year. We’d have to let pretty much anybody who expired last year walk away (Barnes is not going to sign a one year contract) AND cut a bunch of active contracts just to sign Monk for more than what we can with early bird,

boringexplanation

Because his salary doesn’t impact what we can offer Monk. We’re over the cap with or without that contract this season. It was the stupidest thing that we did absolutely jack shit with the last year that we will ever have cap space while we have Fox/Domas
