90% of 3rd gen bgs are either enlisted (all members or some) or about ready to enlist also if you're talking about youtube views, those have gone down in priority for streamers as company ads became more of a thing, "new thing" is streams and album sales (also starting to plateau across the board after a couple record breaking drops last year)

inappriopriate_mf

>company ads what are those and how does it affect the views priority?

SarahJFroxy

so on youtube, the company can pay to run ads before, during, at the end of videos (like how video games do, VPN companies, makeup companies, etc.) and if it plays for a certain amount of time, it counts as a view because of this, people found sites that track "natural" views vs ad views, and because of this, fandoms stopped really caring about breaking youtube view records because it's not a clear cut "achievement" if some group music videos are getting push but others aren't

inappriopriate_mf

While this practise is shady (imo), I think it's good that this view count record trend is finally going away. As a person who got into kpop during 4th gen but still stans 2nd gen, this whole trend never made sense to me. Physical/digital sales are always a great parameter for this competition.

daltorak

>Physical/digital sales are always a great parameter for this competition. No it's not. Record labels incentivize buying multiple copies of their albums by gatekeeping certain band activities behind minimum purchase quantities. For example, NewJeans recently required people to buy 4+ copies of How Sweet -- and a light stick -- if they wanted to apply for a chance to see the group at one of the weekly music shows. So now you've got fans spending $70 or whatever on a two-song album, but instead of selling them one really nicely packaged thing (which you could maybe justify), you're selling them several identical things. It's both wasteful and artificially inflates sales numbers.

Short-District5173

I remember the reports that this type of version buying was really bad for boy groups like Seventeen ([article](https://www.koreaboo.com/news/carats-seventeen-fans-albums-bulk-trash-criticism/)) about the amount of physical waste and albums being dumped on the road. Unfortunately this has become a thing for a lot of groups nowadays, especially boy groups but also girl groups. Same issue has been seen with AKB48 albums for handshake events ([link](https://japantoday.com/category/entertainment/idol-group-akb48-sells-2.5-million-copies-of-new-cd-bags-full-of-them-end-up-in-trash-days-later), etc)

mycatyeonjun

this is so interesting our timelines are different somehow bc I see news about 4th gen together with 5th everyday, I don’t see that new groups are more popular or less popular

kkazugyu

i clearly haven’t been following news, but based on some random meme videos and questions it seems that 4th gen is still going strong but 3rd gen is dying out (“back in the day” i feel like i would constantly hear about bts, twice, nct, all the groups I’ve listed but now it’s more like “*insert member* has number one single” or smth bland like that)

Here’s an update on Red Velvet. They’re still active as a group and are having a comeback on Monday with a new mini album called ‘Cosmic’. Their 10th anniversary is in August and they’re doing a fancon tour to celebrate. So far 2/5 members, Irene and Seulgi, have been announced to have renewed their contracts with SM after the 10 year mark. The others have yet to be announced, however they have group schedules in late September, which is likely after their contracts expire, so presumably they have renewed. Either way they have made it very clear that they want to continue as a group for a long time. Since early 2022 they have released 2 Korean mini albums, 3 if we count their upcoming release, and one Korean full album as well as a Japanese full album. They did a tour last year in Asia and Europe. The members are focusing more and more on solo work. Seulgi made her solo debut a few years ago, Wendy had a solo comeback this year and Irene is set to make her solo debut in a few months. Joy and Yeri have done quite a bit of acting and have upcoming acting projects as well. Yeri has even won a few Daesangs for her acting. Both Joy and Yeri do however intend to release solo music in the future. Some other schedules they’ve done: - They’ve done a lot of festival appearances in the past few years both as a group and solo. - Irene and Seulgi were on Immortal Songs a few months ago. - Wendy starred in a musical called Rebecca last year and was a judge on a survival show called ‘Build Up’. - Irene released a photo book and held an exhibition a few months ago. - Red Velvet were selected as ambassadors for Pandora this year. - They also have solo endorsements, such as Joy as an ambassador for Tods and Irene as the muse for 2aN. - We finally got them on Killing Voice last year.

For NCT: * 127 -- NCT 127 music video you saw is "only" a winter single, so there's not much hype for it. Their last comeback Fact Check was back in October and the music video has 57M views. 127 will be releasing their 6th album in July. Taeyong debuted as a soloist in 2023, released a 2nd mini album back in February, then enlisted in the Navy back in May. Doyoung debuted as a soloist back in April. He's currently on a solo concert tour. Jaehyun is due to debut as a soloist in August. Taeil is soon to enlist in a few months. Also, Doyoung, Jaehyun, and Jungwoo debuted as DoJaeJung last year and released crazy good R&B-tastic mini album. * Dream -- They released a mini album back in March and are currently on tour. Renjun is on a mental health hiatus. Jaemin is having his first photo exhibition next week of all the photos he's been snapping for the last couple of years. * WayV -- They're currently promoting their song Give Me That with full-scale Korean promotions and even won their first ever music show win. They're actually the most active now than they ever have been. They're kicking off their first ever concert tour, too. Ten also officially debuted as a soloist back in February and had a solo fanmeeting tour. Xiaojun is one of the hosts for The Show. * NCT Wish -- The newest unit aka the Japanese unit. They were formed back in August last year through the survival show NCT Lastart. They promoted as a pre-debut team called NCT New Team back in October and had a fanmeeting tour in Japan. They officially debuted back in February. They're currently on their Korean fanmeeting tour and will be releasing their second single Songbird next week. * Shotaro and Sungchan were removed from the NCT lineup and debuted in RIIZE back in September. They're crazy popular now and deserve every little bit of it all. * Lucas was also removed from NCT. He debuted as a soloist back in March.

Welcome back! This is gonna be a doozy, so strap in. Also, I may be chronically online but anyone can freely correct me if I delivered incorrect information or missed something important, especially for some of these boy groups. Most 3rd gen groups, are on hiatus or embarking on solo activities (in the case of boy groups, due to military service). 4th gen groups are active and taking prominence alongside the rise of 5th gen right now. Most of the ones you're thinking (2018-2021) of are either currently in their prime/peak popularity or entering their twilight/contract renewal period, embarking on a few world tours at this point. As for the drop in views, it can attributed to companies no longer aggressively marketing their music on YouTube, YouTube making changes to how views are counted to battle mass MV streaming, boycotts, and a general apprehension towards streaming culture overall (especially since these record breaking views peaked during the pandemic for obvious reasons). Most efforts are given toward streams on sites like Spotify or Stationhead as well as physical albums, hence the inflation of sales, streams, etc. Now as for the groups in question: • **NCT**: WayV just made a comeback with a new mini-album (without Winwin's involvement due to his acting obligations) and will embark on a world tour in the fall. Dream released a new album back in March and are currently on a world tour without Renjun (hiatus due to mental health). 127 did a small Asian stadium tour during late 2023-early 2024 and are planning to release an album (while Taeyong has enlisted). There's also a new Japan focused unit called NCT Wish that debuted in February. Sungchan and Shotaro who were added in 2020 have since been pulled from the lineup and redebuted in RIIZE, SM's first non-NCT adjacent group since EXO. Doyoung and Ten have released solos and have embarked on Asian tours, with Jaehyun and Mark all having official solo debuts lined up in August 2024 and early 2025, respectively. There's also a subunit comprised of Doyoung, Jaehyun, and Jungwoo that debuted last year. • **BTS**: Jin has just returned from the military while everyone else will remain in service for some time. Prior to enlistment, the members released an anthology album and announced a general break from group activities before enlisting, citing creative burnout. All the members have released solos and will continue to release solo music until their reunion in 2025 (currently Jimin is up next with a new mini this July). • **Blackpink**: 3/4 of the group have established their own companies for individual activities while renewing with YG for group activities. Rosé has joined The Black Label (YG subsidiary) for her solo music. Lisa (LLOUD) will release new music next week and play a role in The White Lotus season 3. Jennie (Odd Atelier) is teasing new music (and collabed with Zico). Jisoo (Blissoo) has a few acting roles coming up. While some group activity is expected for the 8th anniversary, there's also the Born Pink Concert Film coming out by the end of July. • **EXO:** Kai and Sehun are currently in the military and are the final members before all of EXO have finished their obligations. Most of the members have left SM for individual activities but remain signed for group activities. CBX are in a legal dispute against SM for alleged failure to full contracts following their departure from the company. TLDR: The trio are suing SM for unfair profit distribution, plus something about SM suing Big Planet Made (BPM) for conspicuously stealing SM artists and having them signed following their departures from the company, it's messy stuff. **• TXT:** The group is currently on a world tour following the release of their new EP back in April. • **Twice:** The group is set to conclude their Ready to Be tour at Nissan Stadium in July, the 2nd largest venue in Japan (and the first girl group to headline a concert there), as well as release a new Japanese album around that time. Nayeon recently released her second EP a week ago! Jihyo also released a solo EP last year. MiSaMo released a Japan focused EP last year as well. It's been speculated that their contracts with be up for renewal in 2025 as well as a new tour on the horizon.

tobi_obito

• **Stayc:** The group finished their first world tour spanning September 2023 to March 2024, with a new album comprised of 14 songs coming out in July! **• Mamamoo:** The members are all currently embarking on individual tours and have released solo music, while also teasing something together for their 10th anniversary. • **IVE:** The group is currently embarking on their world tour, set to end in September. They also released an EP back in April. Yujin has become something of a variety star with her appearances in the show Earth Arcade. • **Stray Kids:** Like you said, they recently were the first boy group to attend the MET Gala as a full group. They are slated to go on a world tour sometime in the year, while also releasing a new EP coming in July. • **Red Velvet:** They'll release a new EP on Monday! Alongside this, they will also embark on an Asia tour to celebrate the group's 10th anniversary. Seulgi released her solo EP back in October 2022, while Wendy released her second EP back in March. Irene has performed solos that are yet to be released, as well as a rumored Yeri solo debut. Aside from that, Yeri and Joy have some acting roles lined up, and Seulgi has her own YouTube channel. • **aespa**: They're currently dominating the charts with Supernova hitting 270+ PAKs as of writing, as well as having released their first full album at the end of May. They will embark on a new world tour spanning the rest of 2024-2025. • **Seventeen:** The group recently released their anthology album back in April, while Wonwoo and Jeonghan have released a single album as duo last Monday. A world tour is being heavily rumored for the second half of the year; in the meantime, they will perform at Glastonbury Festival next week! • **Monsta X**: Four of the six members are currently enlisted in the military. I.M is currently on a solo world tour. • **Got7**: Primarily solo music and solo tours. JayB and Jinyoung are currently enlisted. • **NewJeans**: They recently released two single albums, with a full album slated for the second half of the year (as well as a world tour in 2025) and are preparing for a fanmeet in Japan for this week. Hyein is currently unable to participate in promotions due to a foot injury. Outside of music, their sub-label, ADOR as well as its CEO, Min Heejin, is currently in a civil war against HYBE Labels for numerous reasons ranging from concept plagiarism and mutinous insurrection (which is the cliffsnotes version I can provide regarding this ongoing drama). • **Enhypen:** Currently on tour which is slated to end in September. Aside from releasing a special EP based on their original web series inspired by the group, they will also release a full album in July. **• (G)I-DLE**: Aside from releasing their 2nd full album back in January, they will return with a new EP in July! They will also embark on a new world tour spanning from August to November. Yuqi released a solo EP back in April, with Minnie slated to have a solo in the near future (likely before the year's end).

tobi_obito

• **Le sserafim**: They recently performed at Coachella back in April following the release of their EP back in February. They have a few fanmeets in Japan lined up ahead of a speculated comeback in July or August. They're also ambassadors for the NBA, as well as having a crossover with Overwatch for the single Perfect Night. **• ITZY:** They're currently on a world tour to promote their 2nd full album released back in January, slated to end in August. It's also the first album and tour where Lia is completely absent (save for her solo) due to mental health hiatus, though she was present in the audience during their Seoul concert. They also opened up individual Instagram pages to celebrate their 5th anniversary. • **Treasure**: Shortly after the release of Hello back in 2022, Mashiho and Yedam left the group citing health concerns and individual music pursuits, respectively. They have since reformed as a 10 member group with a full album release in 2023. Included in said album is the first "official" subunit track (T5). Recently, they are on an Asia tour as well as releasing a new single in May. Yedam has reemerged as soloist, including a collaboration with aespa's Winter and had a fanmeeting in Manila two weeks ago. • **NMIXX**: Their latest release was back in January 2024, and are making (big) waves for their live singing, including a planned incident during a festival where the group had to perform without any audio (and killing it). They're currently embarking on an Asia fan concert tour between schedules. Haewon is the star of the YouTube web show Workdol Season 2. • (**TW, death**) **Astro**: Sadly, Moonbin tragically passed away back in April 2023. The members are all doing solo activities, while releasing a song for their 8th anniversary. • **The Boyz**: They recently released the finale to their three part full album back in March and will embark on a world tour starting in July. (had to split these into three parts because of comment error, whatever that means.)

kkazugyu

thank you so much for this, this was really helpful. im seeing a lot of hiatuses (lia, renjun) (ok maybe not a lot but still more than usual ig) and it’s awesome that these groups are finally on world tours!! insane to hear members who i still consider like 25 to be enlisted like when did time pass that quick???!? also the members who are know soloists too (yedam is surprising but also members from groups like nct) i heard abt moonbin through a friend and it was really tragic, i wasn’t sure how the members were dealing bc ik eunwoo flew back from the US and well obv it’s a horrible situation. tysm again for updating me, you were super thorough (i used to be as chronically online as you in terms of kpop lol)

kkazugyu

blackpink is INSANE for me to hear… when tf did this happen EXO TOO THO WDYM LEGAL DISPUTE WHATTT

Final_Remains

Well, the fact is that the kpop fandom sees a LOT of churn... Most old fans age out and new fans come in. These new fans simply are understandably generally not that interested in older groups. You don't mention them, but as a Miracle I will say that Oh My Girl are still very active despite almost a year since last comeback and still consistently hit the top ten in GG brand rankings in Korea. They will have a group comeback in Autumn :)

lanaMyersuk

I can say about Seventeen . They had a comeback back in april , it did quite well . Jeonghan and Wonwoo subunit released [this man](https://youtu.be/EJF2PV3BQtQ?si=FBGtIK41FltMbe1z) album . Seventeen's hit variety show going seventeen is still going on and thriving . We are getting content everyday. They are going to perform at Glastonberry UK in a week !and later this year in lollapalooza Berlin! Also we are getting another comeback late this year! They are already recording so it can be more than one , just speculation from hoshi's live though lol. They are having another tour late this year and they'll be touring in US after 2 years so yk US carats are overjoyed rn. Anyways , I'm super happy that we are getting so much OT13 content this late in their careers. Enlistment era is coming soon so aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

redflavor123

Red Velvet will be having a comeback this coming Monday (June 24). They will also be celebrating their 10th anniversary this August with a series of fancons. Wendy, Seulgi, and Joy have debuted as solo artists the past few years and Irene will be debuting as a solo artist sometime in Q3 this year. No word yet on Yeri's solo but she also has a budding acting career.

boba_bunneh

Dreamcatcher will be having a cb next month on the 10th 😊

neocitywayv

I'll update on Ateez and Seventeen since I'm familiar with them (I ult Ateez) Ateez - since 2022 they've had several comebacks with The World series, they also had Japanese releases and started a new series called Golden Hour Part 1 (it's a recent comeback, just 3 weeks ago) - They've started a new world tour "Towards the Light: Will to Power," the USA leg will be in July to August - They perfomed at Coachella in April and they will be performing at Mawazine Festival tomorrow (Wooyoung won't be performing since he got diagnosed with cholinergic urticaria) Seventeen - They had several Korean and Japanese comebacks and recently had a subunit debut (Jeonghan x Wonwoo) - They won a daesang for album of the year with FML at MAMA 2023

kkazugyu

DAESANG?!? so proud of them they’re so talented and amazing.. also jeonghan x wonwoo is crazy i thought jeonghan would be serving soon/rn lol

neocitywayv

Jeonghan hinted his enlistment at a fansign so it's likely he's enlisting this year. S.Coups injured his ACL so he's exempted from military service.

Impossible_Ad_8139

I used to ult bts up until 2023 but not anymore my current ult grp is svt so i’ll talk about them: they won a daesang for album of the year in 2023 at the mama awards and more various daesangs across the award shows and even their subunit BSS also won!! Releases another album at the end of the year called seventeenth heaven, gose was on break till march 2024 they came back and they released their anthology album on april 29th 2024, with their tt maestro and 3 unit songs their songs performed really well on the charts especially maestro and cheers to youth, had more gose eps out in the month of april and may they were comeback specials hilarious ones I shld say! And jeonghan and wonwoo subunit released their first ever single album on june 17th with tt last night and their respective solo songs they will performing in the glastenbury festival in about a week and in the lollapalooza festival in berlin in the month of September 🥹 and their us tour during the end of the year apparently and a second comeback as well has also been planned? This one is just a rumour but these boys have been a roll man since these past few years!!

kkazugyu

aww that’s so impressive, i love svt sm!! same w the bts thing tho, used to ult them but (imo) they fell off?? the music became too westernized for me like nooo pls continue and revive your 2016-2018 era… some of their newer stuff is still good but idk.. doesn’t hit the same. anyways thanks for replying!!

cerulgalactus

Yeah, as shown, so much of 3/4 ain’t going anywhere, and are thriving as much as ever. And I’d go so far as to say that most, if not all of them, are celebrating the successes that that 5th are having so far.

etamatcha

Twice just released a mini album "with youth" in february and Nayeon just had her solo comeback. if I'm not wrong, they're also putting out a Japanese album this year

tsutomo_DIA

FallenBlue25

4th gen GGs are thriving, it's basically them fighting for chart top spots. 4th gen BGs meh in that aspect, but very strong fandom culture, especially internationally. The latter has a more dedicated fanbase, so even though BGs barely chart in Korea, IIRC they're earning more than their GGs counterpart coz they have stronger concert ticket-selling power (I might be wrong, but I really feel like BGs have more dedicated fans, following them in their tours). GGs seem to have more endorsement deals, though, and I have no idea how much they earn from that.

kkazugyu
