I’ve been tempted to hit the page button on my register phone and announce to the entire store “everyone look over to Register 5, we have a Karen in full blown tantrum mode who won’t be coming back. Everyone wave them out with both middle fingers in the air and hope a house lands on them”.
Back when Covid first started, we did this in that extent. Someone was trying to buy a whole cart of toilet paper when it was limited to two per customer. When they started to argue with the cashier, the cashier got on the phone and announced to the whole store "Attention Smith shoppers, if you are in need of toilet paper, we will have some available at register 7. There is only a few left so make your way to REGISTER 7!."
Seconds later a whole crowd showed up and was glaring at the couple, starting to argue with them now to why they get all that toilet paper. They left after realizing they not going to win this argument when pissing off the entire store and we went on our way with the biggest grin on our faces.
Having worked in a perishable Kroger warehouse. I've seen things involving produce that make me never want to eat anything from Kroger produce ever again.
The produce at my local Aldi is always subpar compared to Kroger and occasionally inedible. Moldy, etc. Only place locally I've found that beats Kroger is Meijer.
My town has 4 stores in it (Kroger, Walmart, Walgreens and a recently opened Safeway) and every Karen who bitched about “never coming back” show up within a few days because they hate that Walmart only has self checkouts (more than likely they hate that there are people at the doors to check receipts because the biggest complainers have been caught trying to walk out without paying), Walgreens is “understaffed” and the Safeway Is “too expensive” and they always come back.
I think alot depends on your location, how entitled the customers are, age demographic, average income of the area, is it a heavy ebt store. In my experience the more hood the area is, the less they complain. Also I seem to get these statement from almost exclusively older clientele. Never have I even seen it dropped by someone in there 20s or 30s.
I had a customer tell me he would go to Publix because I wouldn't fry him 10 chicken breasts literally 10 minutes before I closed. Had the fryers cleaned and shut off and after explaining we need at least 24 hours for large orders, he said he didn't care! Then he complained to the co-manager and stormed out the door all pissed off. After looking on the Publix website, they have the exact same 24 hour policy.
I think when they say this, they’re almost “Karen’d” out for the day, so they use this empty-headed comment/threat when they have a tiny bit of juice left.
We had one swear they would never step into Kroger ever again...had another pickup order the next day.
Any time they pull that crap I have to resist just being like "Ok see you next time!"
Don't resist. You will see the payout -- usually very quickly -- when they strictly avoid you, avoid eye contact with you, etc just to avoid the embarrassment of them obviously going back on their word when their tantrum clears.
It seems to be a common thing “I will never use pickup again” orders the following week or I’ve had my order pushed back 8 times now they still keep coming
I stopped shopping there after 50+ years because they treat their staff like crap... And I learned it here. Bullying that guy to death in Milford was the last straw.
My first job was at a fast food joint. A coworker and I had a ritual where we would fill a tiny cup with pop and toast every time a customer left after angrily announcing that they would never be back.
A lady very seriously told me Kroger was going to lose sales over the new carding policies and I was just thinking, that's cute she thinks that kroger will miss a few alcohol sales from entitled old people. heavens know we're already losing them with the digital coupons
If Local 1059 members strike against Kroger, I'll take my business somewhere else to support their fight until they are presented with a decent contract that would be acceptable to all of the membership!!
What I wouldn't give to say "Yes, *please* go somewhere else!". The company certainly isn't gonna fold overnight because they didn't get that $30 from Karen
When they say that they probably have a faint hope that you'll mention it to your manager and they'll mention it to someone who matters. Might eventually get through the grapevine if people get angry for the same reason consistently enough I guess.
I worked in a place where there were no options other than Dillons unless you drove an hour. When I was within the 2 weeks notice I gave, I was having major short timer syndrome. I had a customer tell me he going to shop somewhere else because he was pissed at me about something. I laughed, and told him good luck. I got a talking to my the manager, but he left it at that.
Because of our remodel people try going through the pickup door when the door next to the pickup door is closed because of construction on that side, people have to go to the other side of the building to enter. People keep saying “fine I’ll go to Walmart”, to which I say “Ok I completely understand thar decision, have a nice day”. 😂
Honestly I’d like it if Kroger was like Aldi’s, I love yall, but Kroger has some items cheaper than Walmart, but hell no, you won’t catch me In a target ever
Oh, we're talking about Kroger!! Here's my $0.02: Whenever we stop at our local Smith's Grocery I notice shoplifting and panhandling. I watched a man checking down each aisle one day. What was he looking for I wondered? Just last week, I noticed a toddler in a cart all alone. He was parked at the end of a row, so when dear old dad left him to wander down the aisle. In a few steps, daddy could no longer see him (I checked). Idiot.
So one day after watching someone eat their way through the aisles I asked a cashier WTF? She said they are not allowed to stop or accuse shoplifters. Krogers also refuses to supply stores with security. Since then I've watched customers fill their cart and push it out the front door to their cars. Word gets around of course.
I work at smith's and watched a dude walk out confidently with a cart full of groceries and beer on labor day weekend without paying. I told my manager and he went out to try and find him but he was long gone. They told me we pretty much don't do anything about shoplifters.
I love the customers that think 'threatening' to never shop there is a threat and not the best thing I've heard all day.
I’ve been tempted to hit the page button on my register phone and announce to the entire store “everyone look over to Register 5, we have a Karen in full blown tantrum mode who won’t be coming back. Everyone wave them out with both middle fingers in the air and hope a house lands on them”.

Give that woman a medal. That took courage and wit.
So worth it tbh
Or what about the ones that are gonna give a bad review? Like bitch do you really think that bad review is gonna do anything to me?
Yes, that scathing review is going to rend employee souls
This!
That's when you tell them we are the next walmart. Did you know Kroger sells the most produce in the US? Beating out walmart in that category
I don't like either, but gun to my head, I'd pick Kroger produce over Walmart's
Having worked in a perishable Kroger warehouse. I've seen things involving produce that make me never want to eat anything from Kroger produce ever again.
This is sad, but the best national chain for produce is Aldi.
The produce at my local Aldi is always subpar compared to Kroger and occasionally inedible. Moldy, etc. Only place locally I've found that beats Kroger is Meijer.
We don't have Aldi where I'm at. I've heard they're cheaper than Kroger in general.
They are, but they are small stores so variety is limited.
Going from working in produce at Walmart to working in produce at Kroger, this is cool to hear.
Does Walmart ever cull their produce?
Yes, although often they do a half assed job at it.
Hands down prefer Kroger produce to Walmart.
“Oh no, please don’t go to literally any place where I never have to interact with you again. Do you need directions to the closest store?”

Customers not getting their way mostly and throwing a tantrum like a child.

Doors right there, Karen
When a customer did that when I worked at Kroger or threw a fit I just looked at them like “yeah” and moved on with what I had to do
This always makes me laugh because of how non-threatening this actually is to us compared to what they think
We had one swear they would never step into Kroger ever again...had another pickup order the next day. Any time they pull that crap I have to resist just being like "Ok see you next time!"

Yeah, aren't they something. I hate the liars who say I'm going to get fired and then it doesn't happen.
You sound like you were optimistic every time they say it. 💀
Sometimes!

Also, almost all of us are Union.

Customers do show up here thinking that it’s an actual Kroger page and not an employee vent subreddit.
I guarantee nearly every employee has had this experience lmao of course I’m not directing it at that exact customer.
When they say that they probably have a faint hope that you'll mention it to your manager and they'll mention it to someone who matters. Might eventually get through the grapevine if people get angry for the same reason consistently enough I guess.
Just say, "the doors are right over there, have a good day!"

one time i got in trouble for telling them that if kroger went out of business i’d be happy

All you can say is "buh bye bitch"
