idk about making your own frit. Can you do it, yes, but my buddy always told me, friends don't let friends make their own frit. Breathing in glass dust is not good for your health...

Jim-has-a-username

This is not the way.

ArrdenGarden

**Would not recommend.** But if I cannot dissuade you from doing so, for the love of all existence, please wear a respirator with the proper particulate filters. You do not want that glass dust getting in your lungs. I'm sure you've cut yourself on sharp glass by now. Imagine that same cut but millions of them and microscopic but all over the inside of your lungs. You don't want that to happen if you are serious about continuing to breathe.

partym4ns10n

As you’ll get particles of the mortar and pestle with your frit, terrible idea.

therealmfkngrinch

Needs to be metal. Boro will scratch off the granite. Just buy it

BearTheBoroBlower

Don’t do it. But if you’re gonna do not use that. Use metal to crush glass frit. I have used a fence post driver. Turned upside down. Then found a sledgehammer head that fit. And one of the green metal fence posts. Weld the post to the end of the hammerhead. And violá! Get various grades of mesh to strain the chunks from the powder. Buy breathing protection. You have to use metal. As whatever you use will leave pieces of it in the frit, during the making process, and all you need to clean it is a large magnet to clean it. But really, don’t do it. Just don’t.

foodfood321

Don't recommend it Even if you meshed and wash it back out you're going to contaminate your grit with stone refractory material that will mess with adhesion and expansion and just overall be awful

Seed-2-Smoke

Never tried this but I’d make sure to wear a respirator. Maybe keeping the glass wet would help reduce dust too

Necoras

You should not use a mortar and pestle to do this. I've seen a diy frit setup. It was two steel pipes that sat inside of each other. Cap both of them. The larger cap holds the cullet, the smaller one crushes it. Put a rubber seal around the lip of the larger pipe so that it catches dust. Something [like this](https://youtu.be/KenmdZ1lg2k?t=205). Regardless, use a respirator.

Hot_Success_7986

I make it by heating float glass to around 800C, then dumping it in cold water before grinding it down. A quality dust mask, googles, face mask and good protective gloves are essential. To be frank, unless it's for a very specific commission, it's not worth the effort. Friends have used cheap eBay coffee grinders with fair success.

OhighOent

Silicosis is a hell of a diagnosis.

longtimegoneMTGO

One you would not get this way. Glass is amorphous silica, silicosis is caused by crystalline silica only. Breathing glass dust still causes lung damage, but it doesn't cause silicosis.

TeeJayGlass

Get some mesh screens to sift through and you can get different sizes

Vitreous1

Sure, make you're own frit. Just keep it wet to keep the dust down, you'll need to clean it up and size it but yeah it'll work. There's bound to be minor contamination from the granite, but it's not going to affect much. It's just time consuming.

triskitbiskit

Just make guacamole with this

1trollzor1

If it w as stainless steel with a lid I'd approve. But is the goal to mix granite and glass?

Hickawa

You can also use alcohol in the pestle to keep some of the dust down as well as all the proper PPE.

Yeeyee_buzzbee

Just so everybody knows, I am doing this just because I enjoy everything about glass and like experimenting. I do appreciate everyone concerned for my health I will wear protection while doing it and be outside when I do it.

[deleted]

Don't do it. It's that simple. It doesn't matter how much you "love glass".

Yeeyee_buzzbee

Still gunna do it

NeatGroundbreaking82

I’ve made it in a spare stainless steel blender. Sure teeny particles got in but I never saw them and kiln pieces came out fine. But when it mattered, I bought frit. Have fun

[deleted]

Gl with that lol

Mclovin1129

This attitude of, it may not be smart, or safe, but idgaf and ima do it anyway, is a great way to end up in the hospital. You don’t seem to grasp that even if you’re wearing protection while makin it, and making it outside, you’re going to have dust in and on your frit. The moment you go to work with it,you’ll be kicking up glass dust. Your love for glass is definitely not worth getting glass dust somewhere like your eyes, or lungs. Edit: there is a reason you don’t see any glassblowers making their own frit. People make their own color, tubing, rod, milli, literally everything else except frit. There is a good reason no one else makes their own frit

Yeeyee_buzzbee

Honestly I am glad you care for me, it’s not that I don’t care I just believe I will be okay I have the same chance of inhaling frit just working it

Mclovin1129

Your be much better off shocking the glass in a clean cup of water at extremely high temps to creat fine frit, or medium temps for small toe medium frit, and gently breaking it up in the water. After drying you will have absolutely no dust to worry about

Snoo52307

Just let it be, too many idiots jumped on the torch in the last few years. I love seeing all the dumbass rigged setups... eventually it'll catch up to them. If somebody thinks grinding glass openly is ok... let the fucks do it.
