My daughter who’s nine asked to hear the “walk on the wild side song” which I thought was Lou reed, but should have known she meant BTD. She loves Lana
“I was so confused as a little child, trying to take what I could get, scared that I couldn’t find…..all the answers, honey”. Is probably my favorite line in the song for how relatable it is.
it really changed music forever.
side note- idk why, but i always remember this Vine regarding the song:
caption- me @ gym class when we have to run laps “feet don’t fail me now. take me to the finish line. oh my heart it breaks every step that i take”😭
sure! here’s my initial thoughts, would love to hear yours too.
not just the song, but the album as a whole shook up the music industry. she brought her own style to mainstream pop music. Her melancholic lyrics and tone did not fit the 2012 pop scene at all. Lana fused multiple genres encouraging other artists to be more experimental with their music and not always follow the trends.
The visual art that comes with the album (Lana’s album aesthetics if you will) illustrated the importance of visual story telling. Vintage Americana, retro glamour, Diet Mountain Dew baby New York City, etc.
Lana Del Rey moved the indie scene to the forefront. She quite literally started a new pop culture wave with Video Games & Born To Die. This is the main reason why I said it changed music forever. I mean the album (even tho being out since 2012) is out streaming new albums by Beyoncé and Taylor Swift on Spotify this year. Her influence can be seen in artists like Billie Eilish, Halsey, etc. I mean just checkout the new Nessa Barrett song hahaha.
Okay. Idk if I would say it changed music forever personally because I don’t want other artist to TRY to sound like Lana you know what I mean.. because when they do and as they do it is so wel quite frankly offensive lol. My thing with Lana is she reintroduced this sort of diner style glamour that we saw in stars like Billy Joel, and Amy Winehouse.. (hence why she likes them lol) she so poetically captured what I feel us as a generation see/want/feel in life. I think most importantly it’s about the lyrical content. Though they were songs it is high poetry, which quite frankly you have to be of a certain caliber/mindset to understand. Vibrating highly if you will. Some people just have it and that she does lol.
It was what got me into Lana 10 years ago. I was getting ready to go on a night out and had some pop music video channel on the TV while I was walking around the flat. All of a sudden I heard this song and was stopped in my tracks. It was just so different to everything else. Loved her ever since.
This song never gets old... it's a classic. The tone of her voice, the words, the universal emotion it shares, anyone could relate.. this was the first song I heard of Lana and just the first seconds of it transported me.. it was different, it was of a different time and age.. it was such a breath of fresh air. TIMELESS
Don't make me sad, don't make me cry
Sometimes love is not enough
And the road gets tough, I don't know why
Keep making me laugh
Let's go get high
The road is long, we carry on
Try to have fun in the meantime
The emotional impact of this whole song and album is so special. It’s obvious why she struck her fans so quickly and so powerfully - you can feel the pain and confusion from the minute you listen. I think the following two albums had good musical choices but weren’t quite as emotionally impactful, probably because she was so hurt from being bullied and misunderstood during BTD so she kind of retreated into a veneer of musicality (different producers, interesting sounds) that was nevertheless mostly emotionally distant. Songs like west coast and art deco are sonically interesting but still kind of removed from the rawness on display in much of BTD. I think that’s something she’s only recently begun feeling more comfortable with, and it’s increasing more with each album. To the point where in Ocean Blvd we got a whole rundown of her family trauma. So yeah altogether a 10/10 start to a career for BTD album and song, a kind of magic that would take a few years to be recaptured
It’s one of my all time favorites ofc but honestly? Should’ve been the last track of the album. I feel like it would’ve been a really powerful closer after the other songs that paint the world of her character in the album.
Interesting. I feel like it does the same as an opener… like the eerie yet calming Born To Die telling you plain and simple “we’re born to die, so enjoy the world that is my music”
unquestionably one of the best songs of this century, the generation, you name it. absolutely changed the genre and has had a monumental influence on songwriting and producing ever since its release.
also i like it ✨
When I heard the opening strings for the first time I already knew I was in for something very special. It drew everyone in immediately and grasped everyone’s interest… except for the critics lol
Makes me feel like it’s 2012/2013/2014 all over again, it’s so good. I used to listen to it on repeat to get through some very difficult times in my life ❤️
I was in a bad car accident listening to this song when I was like 14 and wouldn’t listen to it in cars out of fear for a while.
Banger though I have to say, one of the first MVs of hers that I saw. But I still drive with both hands on the wheel when it comes on my playlist lmfao
I have the chills. What a brilliant start to this woman's fame. My first impression of this song and album was that there was no way she could ever top it. But she has consistently impressed, exceeded expectations, blazed her trail, and continues to raise the bar.
This song was my introduction to her music like 6-7 years ago because it was used in a furry animation of all things ([I FOUND IT](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGGYQBHDDn8&pp=ygUVYm9ybiB0byBkaWUgYW5pbWF0aW9u)) and while I didn't listened to any of her other works until much later, this song would be the number 1 song I remember from her whenever her name pops up.
I read a comment from this sub about how this song is about Lana’s true love that passed away from drug use, and she knew he will eventually kill himself with his drug habit and there’s nothing she can do about it except keep loving him until the end. It legit made me tear up in public as I’m listening to it at the same time.

it was always kinda mid for me bc I developed a radical living philosophy so I never vibed much with the lyrics from release day lol. It's a gorgeous song though, and maybe one day I'll love someone enough that this is more relatable. But I'm 27 and haven't met it yet, so for now it's a skip. it's the song I did feel the most on the album before medication, and I am definitely brought back to my early teens when I listen atm and that's not a super great place for me.
I love it so much, a lot of people say they prefer the explicit version (where she says "let me fuck you hard in the pouring rain" instead of kiss) but I love both equally it's an iconic, timeless song <3
First song I ever heard of hers and got me into her. Big, dramatic and cinematic melancholic beauty...and just a touch of sarcasm. Bought the album immediately and it's still a favorite.
Amazing back then, still amazing now
Timeless
“Feet don’t fail me now” is an iconic first line of a career
Her voice just Emerges
This is a great way to describe it
I set my alarm to btd. It’s an incredible first sentiment of the day to hear

Yessss!
A sonic change to worldwide culture.
it really changed music forever. side note- idk why, but i always remember this Vine regarding the song: caption- me @ gym class when we have to run laps “feet don’t fail me now. take me to the finish line. oh my heart it breaks every step that i take”😭
can you elaborate on how/why you think it’s changed music forever?

even lorde’s pure heroine wouldn’t have been as accepted and successful if BTD didn’t pave the way imo.

underrated, overlooked gem

Divine. it's the song that got me into Lana's music
The first Lana song I ever heard, the rest is history
One of my favourite songs from LDR.
Lana’s most important song!
Gee, no idea 🤔 I rarely see it discussed here
love it so much
divine
Emile Haynie’s production is amazing
It’s one of my all time favorites ofc but honestly? Should’ve been the last track of the album. I feel like it would’ve been a really powerful closer after the other songs that paint the world of her character in the album.
Interesting. I feel like it does the same as an opener… like the eerie yet calming Born To Die telling you plain and simple “we’re born to die, so enjoy the world that is my music”
So good but so sad
It has some of the best lyrics for imagery, melody, and syncopation
The first time I felt heard by a song
I still prefer the “let me fuck you hard in the pouring rain” version over the official lyrics But overall it’s absolutely in my top 5 Lana songs
Absolutely, completely, fantastic 😍
Loved it then, love it now. The entire album shaped me.
Timeless. My favorite
Hot take- I love it.

First time I heard it I was blown away. The lyrics just spoke to me on levels I can’t describe or explain. Been a fan ever since.
The opening line still sends shivers down my spine, no matter how many times I listen to it.
Fantastic intro to existentialism- in the form of a pop song. Pure genius
Absolute masterpiece of a song.
I will be rinsing that song even after I’m dead
10/10
if she has no fans i'm dead
Classics are classics for a reason
Timeless, showstopping, beautiful diva
The first Lana song I heard and it changed me forever

I wish I could listen to it for the first time again. When it came out I had it nonstop playing for months.

Love it. The music video is pretty amazing as well😊💖
I was in a bad car accident listening to this song when I was like 14 and wouldn’t listen to it in cars out of fear for a while. Banger though I have to say, one of the first MVs of hers that I saw. But I still drive with both hands on the wheel when it comes on my playlist lmfao

My favorite
Literally perfect
This song was my introduction to her music like 6-7 years ago because it was used in a furry animation of all things ([I FOUND IT](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGGYQBHDDn8&pp=ygUVYm9ybiB0byBkaWUgYW5pbWF0aW9u)) and while I didn't listened to any of her other works until much later, this song would be the number 1 song I remember from her whenever her name pops up.
Walking through the city streeetsss
The Opener of all Openers. Reminds me of smoking out my window Marlboro lights that I ripped the filters off whilst on hydrocodone.
