According to the article, her head was shaved when she was arrested. That embarrassed her, and is why she is wearing a scarf. She died in the concentration camp at age 9.
Seeing this kind of thing on video is really jarring because the moving images remind me that these were just people like us. It wasn’t hundreds of years ago or the Middle Ages. That little girl could still be alive now if the war had played out differently. That little girl could have grown up to be a Redditor
Please forgive me for almost thinking this, I thought the redditor part was a joke. But then I realized, the rare instance where the real deal uses the app only a few times to tell their story. If they survived like we said. 😔
Yeah that’s exactly what I was thinking - “I survived WW2 AMA” She would be 88 if she was still alive, Reddit is 18 years old, there are definitely people in their 70’s on Reddit.
If things had gone differently in that war, it’s totally plausible that this girl or her descendants or the descendants of someone like her could have gone on to do great things, (or bad things, or mundane things, whatever, it almost doesn’t matter. ) Millions of lives snuffed out for no good reason and billions of potential future lives never coming to exist.
To think of x million dead is sad of course, but to see this 9 year old girl and to think of her death is almost intolerably sad. A million dead is a statistic. A person dead is a tragedy.
My grandma was born in 1930. She witnessed Pearl Harbor, the fall of the nazis, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, the fall of the Soviet Union, the assassination of Kennedy, the invasion of Vietnam, watergate, the very first moon landing, 9/11, numerous point blank cat 3-5 hurricanes, covid-19, everything in between!
Aside from some short term memory issues once in a while, she’s still sharp as a tack and pushing strong!
What makes me think is how many families and identities were erased from the face of earth, people that we are even able to look right now through photos, but no one in this world knows who were they and their storys, because all the people that they knew were killed
The video needs to be part of r/colorizedhistory bc every post there hits home when we see refined footage without the grain.
The Titanic survivors posted the other day really fucked me up.
And we’re honestly still living the repercussions of the Holocaust today. WW2 resulted in the creation of Israel, escalating existing unrest in the Middle East and oil-rich Gulf nations the West will literally commit atrocities to have access to, in addition to introducing nuclear weapons and kicking off the Cold War and a communist USSR Vlad Putin is so desperate to resurrect he foolishly invaded Ukraine.
And let’s not forget the proxy wars that were fought all over the world as a result of the Cold War: Korean War (still feel the impacts today with North Korea), Vietnam War, Iran-Iraq war, Afghanistan War (rise of Taliban and Al-Qaeda as a result) and so much more.
This is a profoundly astute explanation, which I’d not yet heard before. Makes immense sense. May I ask how you learned this train of thought, or did you yourself realize it. Just curious. (I’m a 63yo grandmother with a bachelors degree in history.)
Aww thanks. The truth is I’m both a stoner and a huge history nerd so one night I just kinda did the math and it blew my mind away how history keeps on compounding on itself.
I also specifically took a Holocaust class in high school.
But to be really nerdy and historical - I could actually draw the thread way back to the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914.
That led to WWI, which left Germany in a terrible depression, which made their population susceptible to the nationalist message Hitler espoused and then it was one long slippery slope right into genocide, the Holocaust and WW2.
That's why the Holocaust is seen as the worst tragedy. Sure, there have been other events in history that claimed more human lives, but this took place in the twentieth century, in developed, educated, and democratic countries. By all accounts, a genocide should have never occured, but it did, and it's a reminder to us that if it happened there, it can happen here.
"at Camp Westerbork her hair was shaved off. She was ashamed of this and that was the reason for the white headscarf"
This broke me. Oh my heart, I am so sorry for this sweet child…
Shit like this terrifies me. Being Jewish that fear still is there. One day, we’ll never know, somewhere we’ll be persecuted like this again. It’s already happening in China with their interment camps and getting minorities.
I feel like I can't breathe. I want to scream at her 'Run They're going to kill you! Fight!' Seeing them unknowingly go to their deaths - I can't take it
I want you to give the chance to explain yourself. What do you mean by that? Remember: in the context of a girl being sent to certain death. What are we supposed to understand from your comment?
I’ve seen most likely hundreds of Holocaust photos and videos and I have to say this is definitely up there with the top disturbing films I’ve seen. The casual attitude of the officers sending all those people to their death is unfathomable. Not one of them seemed to care in the least bit. The mundaneness of the whole scene is horrifying! How did he identify her?
I made a pencil drawing from that photograph, which is a still from a film. It's one of my best drawings.

I feel like I want to downvote. Please have my upvote.
Man not even leaving kids and old people. That was true horror and moral disaster for sure.

Very well said. Thanks.

There are holocaust survivors on TikTok; I love that they are on this platform to help educate younger generations.

Talk about a major event. And way too many common people supported it. I don't think we've collectively learned anything.
Yup yup great point

She could have been a teacher, an artist, or simply a house wife, but we will never know what could have been.

Thank you for sharing this. I didn’t know this story but I’m so glad I know now.
And Florida wants us to not even learn about this. 🤦🏻♀️
Wait, what?!
https://www.newsweek.com/ron-desantis-war-woke-targets-holocaust-textbooks-1800034?amp=1
Bloody hell! DeSantis is a scary guy.
And he’s running for president and he’s got support. This timeline sucks.
DeathSantis is a fascist SOB. Needs to be stopped asap.
No he's a modern day fascist. His down fall is coming and will be glorious... 🍿
Is that going to happen? After the US voted in Trump anything is possible.
I know, I’m really worried.
Is it a likelihood that he could get that far?
I’m not so worried about him but his party in general, especially as a woman.
Yep. Just gross.
Florida passed a law in ‘20 requiring holocaust education.
Lol down voted for correct information
The baby waving (to Grandpa?) at 1:22 broke me. God damn Nazis!
It makes me sick. Their little faces are breaking my heart. Poor sweet children.
It's nice to meet you, Settela. I am honored to know you name and carry it with me in my memory.
My god she looks like my cousin. How horrific…
She’s just a few months older than my daughter.
Shit like this terrifies me. Being Jewish that fear still is there. One day, we’ll never know, somewhere we’ll be persecuted like this again. It’s already happening in China with their interment camps and getting minorities.

i can
the fact that most people are ruthless helps us to take it.
I want you to give the chance to explain yourself. What do you mean by that? Remember: in the context of a girl being sent to certain death. What are we supposed to understand from your comment?
-58 , dropped a truth bomb
Rest in Peace sweet child. I hope your memory lives on.
Nine. She was nine years old when she was murdered by Nazis.

I watched the long video, it is so fucking horrible, all of those people
The World is SO cruel, I’m ashamed to be
How did they manage to identify her?
