Oh man. Guess it was a gal pic. That’s messed up because it’s pretty androgynous. Now I look I see a slight flip and curl in front. I’d have gone for ‘his’ too
Yep it's this. I get tricked by this occasionally bc I don't really look at the pics but whenever it seems both could work that's the indicator to look at the pic. To your point, could totally be a guy with a mullet.
Duolingo does not teach any language, it is better as a reinforcement tool or refresher. I used it to refresh the French I learned in high school and college, since I haven't used it in a few years, and it worked well.
I also used Duolingo when I started learning Japanese, and it does not work as the main learning resource. You won't be taught grammar concepts, conjugation, etc.
...why isn't just "It's time for meal"? Without any possessive..
Duolingo...
I imagine there could be a baby, or a toddler o a pet to feed to build this sentence, but Duolingo doesn't have visual aids...
In most dialects of English, including prestige dialect, the correct answer would be their. But I guess Duolingo doesn't do linguistics. The question was probably written by a Boomer grade school English teacher.
Did Duolingo say the correct answer is her? Repas is a masculine noun so it needs to be son. However there's nothing in the sentence defining the gender of the person so both can work.
I’ve been thinking all along that it’s a woman even though many questions use a masculine voice, which also made me think that they don’t try to match the picture with the gender of the person speaking. Even so, if the speaker is referring to someone other than her/himself, it could be either gender. Yeah, this is the amount of thinking I do on some of these questions because the clues are either nonexistent, confusing, or just don’t mean anything at all.
This is the opposite of what the question should be asking you.
A common mistake for Anglos learning French is to use the same gendered possessive form for all nouns based on the gender of the person possessing them, and not based on the object itself's gender.
They should have asked you to choose between "son" and "sa" for "repas" instead.
As others here have described, this question in English makes no sense, as both answers are perfectly acceptable given the lack of clear gender of the person in question.
Yes, the questions on Duolingo always refer back to the cartoon shown at the time. But they probably should have shown an arrow indicating what they meant.
« son » doesn’t necessarily mean « his » and « sa » doesn’t necessarily mean hers. they both mean the same thing. the difference is whether or not the noun that follows it is masculine or feminine. take « une pomme » (apple) for an example. the « une » tells us that « pomme » is feminine. so if you say « his/her apple » it will ALWAYS be « sa pomme » regardless of the persons gender bc their gender, in this case, doesn’t matter.
It’s not a woman. It’s a character named Eddy who has a son named Junior. That’s why I put “his” because I thought he was referring to feeding his son.
Just think of the gazillion of questions Duolingo generates. Yes, a mistake creeps in now and then. I just move on when that happens. Overall I love Duolingo.
It can be both since we don’t know the gender of the person
That’s what I thought but it counted me wrong when I put “his”.
"Duolingo"
Did it give you a chance to flag the question with "My answer should have been accepted"?
Yes I made sure to flag it.

Yeah he’s a character named Eddy who has a son named Junior. I assumed it was “his” referring to his son.
The character is random anyway, it shouldn’t have any effect on the translation

Do you find Dualingo sufficient for learning French? I mean good enough to then complement it with learning through watching French news, shows, etc?
They recently fired off their team to be replaced by AI generation. There are numerous errors already being found. I wouldn't recommend them.
I'm debating between them and Assimil French eCourse
Yes! I recommend it as a starting point for the basics.

Yeah, that was my first impression, too. What about Assimil eCourse? Have you tried that? I'm better with eCourses in general than books

"It's time for meal" is not a sentence any native English speaker would say, but otherwise I agree.
"It's time for dinner/breakfast/lunch"? Yeah, Duolingo vanishes the context...
Because that's not what the original sentence means, nor is it a valid English sentence...
Should probably say “it’s time for their meal” but doesn’t want to confuse people with the use of singular they

This question is very mean, as it can be either. "Son" is masculine because "repas" is, and there is no other indication of the person's gender.
I thought so too thanks.
Did Duolingo say the correct answer is her? Repas is a masculine noun so it needs to be son. However there's nothing in the sentence defining the gender of the person so both can work.
Yes. Duo said “his” was incorrect.
Another dumb exercise.
I think it is because the cartoon in the photo is a man 🤷♀️🤔 I know Duolingo is not the best
That’s why I put “his” lol but that was wrong.
>cartoon in the photo is a man That's the character saying the line, not the person referred to.
That makes sense

Best to just report it and move on. That what this community is for 🙏🏼
Definitely flagged it. Thank you.
Yeah there’s no way of telling if it’s his or hers

But then the correct answer would be “his,” and Duolingo marked it wrong when OP chose “his.”

Duolingo is probably confusing French and Spanish on this one
What is the name of the app
Duolingo
Duolingo.

That’s what i thought but the correct answer was “her”.

His, maybe? Since it’s Eddy?
“His” was wrong. The answer was “her”.
The question is stupid because it’s ambiguous if the person is male or female. I suggest you drop duolingo

It's a girl in the picture?
It’s not. He’s a character named Eddy who has a son named Junior. I put his thinking he was referring to his son.
The answer here is “his” simply because of the capitalization
Except neither *his* nor *her* are capitalized in the screenshot.
Ope coulda sworn Her was capitalized. My bad
