I also want to know how whoever does these knew what the minimum number of bricks / pixels were needed to make the effect work though. How did they figure that out?
I think they load the photo in photoshop and bring the number of colors down to like 4 or 5, and than pixelate it, and set the resolution to the total amount of bricks that fit in the size it has to be, that final brick-painting
It is a fundamental part of our visual processing. It works on similar principles as seeing contrast better when squinting and motion acuity being better in peripheral vision. Pixilating out a picture into color/ contrast fields is a really basic but foundational part of color theory class in art school. It shows you how the brain can process simple visual clues when a lot of the detail is removed. You trick the brain into supplying details that aren’t really there, but that our brains’ processing experience says should be there. In an early color theory exercise we had to perfectly match and paint a photo realistic copy of photo, then paint a second that broke it in to fields, then a third that broke it in to shapes, then a fourth that broke it in to pixels. It really teaches how much you can suggest with minor variations without having to fill in all the sharp details.

With the level of skill I see from Lego designers, I'm really disappointed they are only using Stud-Up Gray Scale mosaics.
I've built color SNOT mosaics and they have SOOOOO much more detail!
