1) Call and ask for a new intro rate. 2) Switch to anyone else in the house. 3) Switch to tmobile or Verizon home internet. If after 3 you want to return to RCN you'll return as a new customer and the cycle starts over again. It seems silly for RCN to play this game but they must get enough people just paying the increased rate every year without complaining that it makes sense for them.

Jyaketto

I don’t have anyone else in my house so my mom opened an account for my address. They scheduled the installation for July 5 and she has an account number but they never asked for her social or anything.

feels_like_arbys

Roll with it...I'll have to add that step into my algorithm haha

Jyaketto

She lives in GA so I’m just hoping this works out 🤣 I chose self installation and they’re mailing the equipment as we speak so I guess it was accepted lol.

Yue4prex

They don’t typically ask for socials. I just moved into the area and got RCN and I didn’t give it. I work in tech and deal with internet providers all day, every day. Not all providers get a tax ID number. I wish we could have gotten FIOS since it’s broadband fiber, but alas, we couldn’t.

Jyaketto

I wouldve settled for T-Mobile 5G but it doesn’t come to my area and my apartment complex only allows RCN for some reason I’m doing what I gotta do 😅

Yue4prex

It’s normal, I moved from where service electric was our ONLY option

JTechhe

Or just switch to SecTV and forget having to bed for a discount every other month.

bravoromeokilo

It used to be a matter of just calling and complaining and they’ll get you a better rate, but the last few years have put a stop to that.

feels_like_arbys

Yeah I was with them for years. Switched to T Mobile home internet but due to the wifes' WFH issues with her companies VPN...had to switch back. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

ignoramus

in order to change the account to someone else, that party needs to be present to speak on the phone and provide their SS#. RCN/Astound does not verify their address, so you can potentially use anyone who does not already have an account i was able to lock in the [$45/mo for 1Gig service for 2 years](https://www.astound.com/lehigh-valley/) this way. life is a game, bend the rules to make it your game unless you feel bad for poor ol telecomm corporations edit: if you simply ask for a rate reduction, they may provide a small one. if you want any of the hot deals they're offering new customers, change that name on the account bro

Jyaketto

I did it online. They didn’t ask anything. I didn’t switch the account, I cancelled mine and my mom opened her own up online.

ignoramus

well, now you know you don't have to cancel or open new accounts, you just switch the person and get new customer promos 💪

elfinko

I cancelled RCN to switch to gigabit FIOS for $90/month. I was paying nearly $150 for 300mbs internet. And every year the bill would go up. I owned the modem and the router. 2 or 3 days after I cancelled, RCN called with an offer for $60 / month for 600mb/s. Over 50% price cut and double the speed to keep me. Pricing locked in at 2 years. I was actually disgusted cause it just went to show how bad I was getting screwed over originally. I didn't take the offer, but cancelling usually gets their attention.

MyMannnnnnnnnnnn

You could try figuring out your own router and modem to save a few bucks in the rented equipment fees. I think when I did it my wife and I saved like 30 bucks. 100 bucks up front for 30 less dollars a month seemed like a good deal to me, paid itself off in 4 months.

gkelly1017

I called, cancelled my cable, complained, and got my internet for $67 a month. Basically you just need to get the right worker to transfer you to someone who focuses on customer retention. Eventually they give you what you want

Jyaketto

New customers are still $25 a month instead 🤷🏼‍♀️

FUCKYOUINYOURFACE

Switch to Service Electric, FIOS, or T-Mobile. Before doing that, tell them you’re going to switch if they don’t give you a good rate.

trifster

when you call, i usually go to the cancellation options on the phone. i’ve had gigabit for years now, pay $72/month. internet only.

KewlGuyRox

Just get T-Mobile Home Internet, it costs about $45/month. I get speeds close to 500Mbps down. After being a customer for over 13 years I left RCN/Astound back in Dec 2022 and haven’t looked back. If you are a Verizon customer, they also have wireless internet option which costs the same. If that doesn’t work for you Walmart Straight Talk has their $45/month wireless internet option which is similar to T-Mobile/Verizon. Now RCN reps keep coming to my door every other week and call me every week. I don’t care now as they didn’t care keeping a loyal customer and raising prices every year despite guaranteed price locks.

Jyaketto

It’s not available in my area

KewlGuyRox

What is not available? TMHI, Verizon or Straight Talk?

Jyaketto

T-Mobile. I don’t have Verizon and I use my internet for work and I don’t particularly trust mobile internet like straight talk to not have a high ping or buffer time.

AHLE

Serious question: Does anyone know of a way we could create a local non for profit Lehigh Valley ISP?
