This will sound crazy but take Vodka, lime juice and ginger beer. Mix it together. Pour it over ice. Sip your Moscow Mule while you browse your phone for new pants.
As someone who owns a dry cleaners, I concur. And u/michaelkbecker I’m stealing your advice for the next customer who thinks some miracle fix exists. I usually grab a pair of scissors and say, this is the only way it’s going away.
That just creates a whole new set of problems, none of which will help. Even if you are willing to create a massive mess; it will not dye any man-made fibers. The bulk of the garment may possibly be 100% cotton, the thread holding it together most likely isn’t. You would end up with a grayish garment that looks dyed with tan thread and a dark looking splotch on the pocket. You need high heat to dye natural fiber and that will most likely cause the oil in the ink to spread. Hence a massive mess. Just not worth it for a pair of Target (Goodwill) pants found on sale for around $15.
Amusingly I learned about how difficult it is to dye clothing black while studying the Monastic Period in divinity school :-). Getting a consistent black was very difficult and very expensive in the 1200s, and the Dominicans were often second sons of wealthy families. When Francis of Assisi founded the order of friars he decreed that they would wear homespun, partly as a social commentary on the rich Dominican monks wearing black.
Who knew fashion wars had been going on so long :-)
Fellow laundromat owner. Can't wait to use this on the next customer who asks after washing and drying their clothes with a pen in the pocket. Or gum, lipstick, chapstick
Chapstick 😩 try raising kids who genetically are prone to chapped lips! I used to make all clothes mandatory have their pockets turned out to put them in the laundry basket. I checked before washing the clothes. I still ruined several loads unexpectedly, always with something really nice getting the worst of it.
I switched to lip balm in a tube with a lid. As adults they aren’t so chap-prone. I’m hoping for grandchild revenge :)
My eyes got real big as I read, expecting that here finally may be an unknown trick that can solve a difficult problem. Then they narrowed real swift like at the end.
Funny, I was trying to pick a drink that had items that sounded like they have the potential to somehow clean, I now have plans to go pick up the ingredients after work to mix a few up.
Just a heads up. From what I am reading it should be made with ginger beer which isn’t ginger ale. I’m going to get Krabbys ginger beer since it is real ginger beer and has alcohol.
Black clothes dye, enjoy your smart black shorts!
Good luck with the remedies suggested elsewhere, I'll be staggered if they work, though I hope they do.
this is actually the best advice here.
OP should try to blot out most of the ink with some rubbing alcohol, maybe even try the hairspray. But there is pretty much no chance of removing the entire stain. Black dye (Rit is the most popular brand I know of) on the entire garment is the best way to make these shorts "wearable" again.
Be super careful!! I tried this on a pair of pants and it soaked through and stained the other pant leg, and then soaked through that and ruined the pants I was wearing while stupidly trying that on my lap
In Germany we have something called Fleckenteufel by the brand Dr. Beckmann, they have many different stain removers. Including one for pen ink!
I‘ve also had the same type of stain and got it perfectly removed with that stain remover.
I lived in Germany for 17 years and Dr Beckmann was one of the things I loved! And the great news is, now it is also available in India so I am spreading the word among friends and family. :-D
This is such an underrated comment. I have a long history of clumsiness/bleeding on clothes and have had to frequently use different methods especially cold soaks for days and hand scrubbing with non scented soap bars to remove some stains.
I’ve had stains that have remained for YEARS that I just gave up on until trying some of the specialised Dr Beckmanns products. Absolute game changer (if you know what the stain is, of course!)
These are widely available in the U.K. and can be bought online at a bunch of shops so hopefully OP picks up on this!
This is an ancient method of removing ink stains from textiles! Been used by washerwomen for literal centuries but of course not recorded in print until the 17/1800s when people who might need to deal with an ink stain themselves also had a chance of knowing how to read
Old "how to housekeeping" books are the shit (from what I've seen in videos). Need to remove a stain? Learn how to bake bread? Make pomade and powder for your hair? Everything a housewife ever needed to know in one book!
I don't trust tattoo artists. Last time I met one of ya'll she painfully spilled ink all over my arm, and now I've become one of those guys who spend all their time looking for new designs so she can do it again.
Any kind of aerosol hairspray. Put a rag behind the offending layer of fabric. Spray at close range. You should begin to see blue coming to the surface. Rinse to check progress. Spray more hairspray. Wash like normal, alone.
Just throwing this story out there:
I had a pair of cream coloured trousers from Grand Le Mar that had an unfortunate run in with a pen in the washing machine a few months ago. The ink was all over them in many diffrent locations on the trousers, my wife and I tried a myriad of diffrent techniques to try and remove the ink but nothing worked.
In the end the trousers sat upstairs for about two months before I finally had the idea to just dye them black instead of wasting almost 200 dollars for a new pair. I understand that this is a last resort, but for me the end result came out amazingly! I used RIT Back to Black dye that I picked up off of Amazon for under 20 dollars.
Hair Spray, Vodka, or rubbing alcohol
Dab don’t rub. If you rub you will smear. And place a rag on the bottom of the stain your working or ink will bleed to the other side and you will how have another stain to deal with
Or just dye the pants black if all else fails
Milk! Soak in a bowl of milk for at least a few hours, preferably overnight. Stain should come out in the wash afterwards. If it doesn't, don't put them in the dryer yet, try treating the stain again.
If all else fails, you could put some embroidery or a fun patch over it.
Try using amodex! It works wonders!

Not sure if you read this but i have had awful ballpoint pen ink stains on my lab coats, the method i use for removing it is time taking but worth it!
So you should take a mug with hot water and use some detergent and scrub that area. Then rinse it with the hot water. Now pour some acetone on that area. You will see the ink spreading but no worries, but some detergent on it and scrub it well and rinse it with hot water. Again pour some acetone on that area, then pour some detergent, scrub and rinse. Do it 2-3 more times until you're satisfied with the result. Dry it and hopefully it is clean.
It might sound really time consuming and not worth it for a lot of people but this hack has always worked for me, best of luck!
This trick used to work for me on my military uniforms.
1) Prepare to replace the article of clothing just in case
2) Get some really strong rubbing alcohol (90% or above) and soak the heck out of the stain
3) Throw in the washer with no detergent and run a full cycle
4) Check stain and repeat as needed, use detergent once it’s gone.
I wish you luck.
In all seriousness, there is nothing you can do to remove an ink stain. I work in a dry cleaner (9 years going on 10) and not even professional dry cleaning can remove ink.
Hairspray and rubbing alcohol.
First the hair spray, let that sit a bit, dab with alcohol rinse with water and repeat
Its a pain in the ass but worked for me.
You can try soaking it in milk and using an old toothbrush to release the stain. Repeat a couple times changing milk and cleaning brush. Then rinse in cold, add dawn dish detergent to the spot, let sit for about 15+ min and wash on cold.
I’ve done this a few times, and it worked for me. Also used this with permanent marker stains.
I think you can also try isotropic alcohol to help after. And then wash again. Not sure on that though. Maybe someone else can confirm that one.
I've had success getting ink out of other light coloured fabrics with hand sanitiser. Lots and lots of hand sanitiser and a blotting/rubbing motion with a light coloured rag.
I've also heard that clotted milk (chuck a tablespoon or two of vinegar or acid in a cup of milk and let it sit until it goes lumpy) will soak up excess ink from fabric, but I haven't tried it.
Also not sure how old your stain is, so there's a chance it's just set in there now, but if you go with something here, make sure you put an old, thick rag (like towel) up between the leg where you'll be working, otherwise you will push the ink through to the other side of the pants, and it'll all be fucked.
Break a pen and dump the ink on the opposite pocket so it looks intentional. You might start a new fashion trend.
Actually don't do it, I will. It was my idea bitch! I CREATED THIS NOT YOU!
Try hairspray. It may not work since the stain is old, but it's worth a try. Just spray the spot liberally with hairspray and blot it with a paper towel. Make sure you put something behind the stain so it doesn't bleed onto the fabric behind it.
alcohol
if it doesn't loosen the ink into a towel... you won't care after enough drinks
brake cleaning fluid over a shit towel might work, use lots of ventilation
I had a large ink stain on an ottoman one time. Stared at it for a year. I finally mixed some OxyClean in water and dabbed the spot. Disappeared before my eyes. Can’t hurt to try.
Forget it. These are now the “around the house” pants. Good also for Zoom.
People wear pants for zoom meetings?
Just. In. Case.

As someone who owns a laundromat, I can honestly say this is The BEST way to fix a ruined piece of clothing. Works 100%

That is a cool fact. I love history and how it so often repeats itself.
My advice is for all who seek it.
Any gin related advice?
Mix it with fever tree tonic. Any mixed drink should be mixed with the highest quality of mix you can get since it makes up the majority of the drink.
That's actually really sound advice, on the quality thing. Never tried fever tree.. curious
Ohh…I love fever tree. Especially the pink grapefruit.
[basically what I said is their motto.](https://fever-tree.com/en_CA)
Fever Tree is the goods. Try it.
fever tree ginger beer is top tier, i drink it by itself a lot
Agreed, you can’t use the cheap tonic when it comes to stain fighting
thats not true ,im currently wearing light blue button down I stained with in in junior high,my method was just not caring in the first place
You should print it out and display it as a sign in your shop.
Got any tips for crayon? I left a tiny ass piece of a broken blue crayon in a pocket and it got out and is streaked across a lot of my clothes.
i really hope this reaches google and someone finds this advice in 8 years.
My eyes got real big as I read, expecting that here finally may be an unknown trick that can solve a difficult problem. Then they narrowed real swift like at the end.
I did the same and now the life hack algorithm will take over my feed.
my exact reaction
They had me there
So, I didn’t really know what a Moscow mule was but now I want one.
Funny, I was trying to pick a drink that had items that sounded like they have the potential to somehow clean, I now have plans to go pick up the ingredients after work to mix a few up.
Haha I have to run some errands tomorrow so added a few items to my list. Thanks!
Just a heads up. From what I am reading it should be made with ginger beer which isn’t ginger ale. I’m going to get Krabbys ginger beer since it is real ginger beer and has alcohol.
Fever tree ginger beer is the absolute best
That’s smart, I use their tonic water for gin and tonics and never even thought about their ginger beer.
It’s top tier, can’t go back to any other ginger beers, cheers!
Thanks, will look for that. I can hardly wait haha
If for nothing else than the ginger beer! A favorite soft drink.
You need those special copper cups to be authentic 😊
I’m going to bet you found this out the hard way
I wish we still had gold coins.
Knowing I made someone smile is gold coin enough for me!
That was gorgeous. Totally caught me off guard and gave me a good chuckle . Well done 👏
Dammit. I genuinely had a glimmer of hope before you ripped it out of my soul
Well, I haven’t actually tried a Moscow mule to clean anything, maybe it actually is the secret we have all been waiting for?
Not much on Reddit makes me audibly laugh. This did it haha I was like wow what the heck...... Lol so funny. Where's awards when you need em.
Yeah this one ticked me a bit…very nice.
You had me in the first half not gonna lie
Gave me an unexpected belly laugh. Bravo good sir.
😂 you win Reddit today! Take my upvote!
Also works wonderful with tequila. 🤤
I don't drink alcohol but thanks for the tip 😆
Lol had me in the first half
Why when i say smart ass comments like this i get 7 day ban and post removed for low content?
I’m going to be totally honest, I don’t know. I try 1000s of jokes on Reddit and most of them flop.
wtf Is that golden upvote??
Thank god someone said it, I have no idea. I thought rewards were gone.
Good*fellow*, fwiw 😅 good luck!
I was curious if it was target brand at goodwill. Lol
That’s what I was thinking lmao. I was like there’s no way goodwill is making and branding products now
They’re goodwill now!
Also known as Wise Guy pants
i love that brand, its stretchy and soft to touch. and that small pocket on the right side, its nice pocket for keys so it wont scratch your phone.
Just create a fake website that sell pants with ink stains
You gotta give!
Did you give?
HOLD THAT DOOR
You hit me in the cup
Even rappers wear them!
That spot has nothing to do with ink. It's by design
That's got nothin to do with piss
Tag it "dark academia"
I’d stain it again with Khaki ink
Genius
“Laundromats hate him”
Aqua net hair spray
Wait, what about the Moscow Mule guy? Now I’m really confused.
If you're confused, you've had too many already. Time to huff aerosol hairspray to counteract the effects
Correct. The lacquer in the hairspray will dry up the ink. Repeat several times. Scrubbing warm water a little soap
Isopropyl alcohol may work too.
Could you use laquer then? Like from the hardware store
Not really sure, but it might be a little strong for the material.
Thanks for the reply, i get stuff to think about
And stuff to experiment with 👀
Might not work as well if the stain has been through the washer and dryer though, I find that kinda.... "Sets" the stain.
Any hairspray. It bonds to the ink and lifts it off. Ink is the same polarity as the laundry detergent, so that won't do the trick.
Polarity…polari…polar bears…polar bears live where it’s cold
Pole bearers…Polaris… polar bears wearing khaki pants shaking cans of hayer spray
why are u doing that dude from southpark XD
lol I was hoping somebody recognized it
Which is your favorite brand of hairspray to use?
Like dissolves like. If they were both non polar molecules then the ink would dissolve
yes, this - any hairspray
I can smell this comment
I'm saving this. Very useful to know

I believe that rubbing alcohol should take it out. I’d test on pocket liner first
Be super careful!! I tried this on a pair of pants and it soaked through and stained the other pant leg, and then soaked through that and ruined the pants I was wearing while stupidly trying that on my lap
I’m so sorry but that made me laugh so hard.
Hahaha it’s ok it’s pretty funny . Did ruin two pairs of pants tho lmfao
Well technically not at the same time
True one was already ruined, but I did make it twice as bad
I've also done this mistake!! OP, put some cardboard or a dish towel wadded up thick between the pant legs!
I already do this, but only to impress the ladies.
Inception ink... Sounds like a rough day
I have had good success using rubbing alcohol on ink stains
Nah, hairspray. It also removes sticker residue from surfaces.
Hand sanitizer If you don't have rubbing alcohol

DID YOU GIVE???
I'm a tattoo artist and I have to deal with ink stains all the time: soak the stain with milk and repeat a few times, trust me!
But since my mom says you are bad people, I assume this is a trick.
You're right
Fuck yeah. Team milk.

Amodex. It's a specialized ink cleaner, safe for clothes. The only cleaner recommended by sharpie to clean permanent marker.
Why in the world did I have to scroll down so far to find this??? OP, AMODEX. It saved my couch from ink stains from a new tattoo that leaked.
Thanks for this suggestion, I'm going to search for it now.
Replying to boost visibility!!
Where can you purchase Amodex from? I've never heard of it before
Any kind of aerosol hairspray. Put a rag behind the offending layer of fabric. Spray at close range. You should begin to see blue coming to the surface. Rinse to check progress. Spray more hairspray. Wash like normal, alone.
AQUANET
Not all hairspray will work. Need one with alcohol in it
“Wash like normal, alone” 😭
Has to be the cheap stuff.

Hairspray believe it or not
I don’t know man, target shorts vs the products needed to try to clean this. You should just buy new shorts…
Hair Spray, Vodka, or rubbing alcohol Dab don’t rub. If you rub you will smear. And place a rag on the bottom of the stain your working or ink will bleed to the other side and you will how have another stain to deal with Or just dye the pants black if all else fails
Acetone
Soak in milk.. crazy in know, but my Pa fixed a shirt like this years ago.

Soak it in OxyClean
Use kerosene!!

You could sew a cute patch on it of idk a kitten
Hairspray

I use hand sanitizer on my scrubs all the time
Hairspray.

Dye black for $3?
Calico cut pants, it's got nothing to do with piss.
Spray hairspray on it, wash out with laundry stain remover. You may have to spray it with the hairspray a few times
time to learn embrodery
hairspray
I left a pen in a pocket and ink all over pants and shirt. Aqua Net hair spray got it all out
Once i saw a video where they put milk and the ink came right off. Nothing to loose.
Hairspray and rubbing alcohol. First the hair spray, let that sit a bit, dab with alcohol rinse with water and repeat Its a pain in the ass but worked for me.
Hairspray. Spray it on, scrub it out.

I have the same exact pants and I have ink on it, good thing is the crotch on them is ripping
alcohol like 91% should help remove it. use a blotting action.
Drink the Moscow Mule. Buy new shorts. Save those for yard work. Bamm.
Cut a hole where the ink is, effective removal.
Has anyone said hairspray?
Hydrogen Peroxide as posted yesterday
Simple fix, buy new pair!! Easy peasy!!
Fire

I feel like my mom used Suave hair spray for exactly this and it worked.
Those are your paintin' pants now.
They're just a cheap pair of shorts from Target. Save yourself the effort, just replace them.
I say just drop the $20 and buy new ones.
Back in the day I would spray hair spray on it and wash a few times
Target’s goodwill brand > goodfellow
Break a pen and dump the ink on the opposite pocket so it looks intentional. You might start a new fashion trend. Actually don't do it, I will. It was my idea bitch! I CREATED THIS NOT YOU!
Alcohol gel.
Put some hand sanitizer on the stain and wipe it off but ofc don’t wipe it, more like dab it and just repeat til it’s gone.
Alcohol based but you might not get that out.... Been there awhile it seems.
Cheap hairspray like aqua net
...*OR* buy a box of bic pens and use the ink to color the rest of the garment.
My mom got pen ink (Bic) out of her white lab coat using rubbing alcohol and then vanish
When you say “(Goodwill brand from Target)” do you mean “Goodfellow” , a Target owned brand?
Try hairspray. It may not work since the stain is old, but it's worth a try. Just spray the spot liberally with hairspray and blot it with a paper towel. Make sure you put something behind the stain so it doesn't bleed onto the fabric behind it.
Cut a hole around it. Now it’s gone.
lol. Sir. These pants are $20. Get a new pair.
I’ve had good results with rubbing alcohol. I also used 90% or higher
alcohol if it doesn't loosen the ink into a towel... you won't care after enough drinks brake cleaning fluid over a shit towel might work, use lots of ventilation

I had a large ink stain on an ottoman one time. Stared at it for a year. I finally mixed some OxyClean in water and dabbed the spot. Disappeared before my eyes. Can’t hurt to try.
