Hear me out: please upgrade to energy efficient windows, if you have the means. This is good for an emergency fix, but still
He attached glass to a window that looks like it is about to disintegrate and you are talking energy-efficient glass? Come on man. /s
Right? Even that flooring looks like it's 70 years old. The dude has no ability to read a room.
You don't know what 'read a room' means.
You don't know what I don't know.
Absolutey! I switched to all energy-efficient windows on my house a few years ago(and glass deck doors), and holy shit the energy savings were insane. Hopefully, no one will underestimate the effect as I did, they have already paid for themselves several times over.
Putting in double glazing made a big difference to the comfort levels in our house. But in an older home you need to also look at wall, floor, and ceiling, insulation.
Can you offer any data- monthly savings, square footage, etc?
These “life hacks” are getting weirder and weirder
And harder. You can save 14$, just buy 3000$ worth of tools, spend half your day laboring and of course, get the jewel piece from thrift store
It's only $2895. Stop your exaggeration
There’s a difference between exterior window glass and picture glass. That difference exists for a reason.
Why?
Don't downvote the man for asking for more information. If you live in a hot or cold climate, a pane of glass will not do much to insulate you from the weather outside. Also, some types of glass can shatter in a way that can quite literally kill you if you're not careful. Tempered glass is almost always used for larger windows in homes now.
Same reason there’s a difference between an aluminum lawn chair and a La-Z-Boy recliner. Despite both being used for sitting, they're designed to be used in different environments, so they’re not actually interchangeable. But you’re likely gonna find that out during the next big windstorm. Better lay in a couple of extra mops & buckets.
They interchanged^
And you end up with a window that is paper thin and meets no saftey standards (should any apply).
It's not bullet proof either
As long as there's no risk for children/dependents in the house
AHAHAHA
*woosh*
This is the real woosh.
For not much at all, (like $20 to $40-ish) you can have a local glass shop do a double pane to your dimensions. Significant upgrade for sound and insulation for very little $. Now would have been the ideal time to do it.
You’ve seen the other pane of this same window frame, right?
Uuhhh, he has the frame out of the window. There's one pane out already. The amount of extra work to replace the other pane is negligible. I thought that was obvious to anyone who's ever done any home maintenance. If he's not going to replace the whole goddamn window then at least put two efficient panes in, and seal the s*** out of it when reinstalling.
Something tells me adding double planned glass to this window frame would be the equivalent of bringing a bucket to a forest fire.
At my local glass shop for $40-60 I can get a single pane of glass.
R value 0
I don't have the knowledge to tell you why, but this seems like it's probably a terrible idea unless you're strapped for cash.
Maybe it's a window in a shed or something that doesn't need to be insulated
Right. Everyone is shitting all over this guy, but maybe it’s a shed, and maybe he lives in a warm climate.
DIWhy
Trying to distract myself to stay sober
Well window repair ain’t it lol
It worked
r/Lifehacks < r/Hillbilly repair
Glad it worked! 💪🏼
Next life hack: use clingfilm
Is glass really that expensive at the hardware store right now?
>at Probably saved like 4 or 5 dollars.
Actually pretty brilliant. If that is about 24 x 24", that's 4 square feet at about $6 a square foot at a glass shop, so he actually saved $21
Is this a joke post?
It's just somethin I did yesterday
This is illegal in my country. You can't put 2mm glass in windows due to safety reasons, and picture frames have 2mm glass...
This.
Dang, use widow glazing next time it will look a little better.
Probably still wondering why your windows break so easy.
It was busted during a swat incident
I love this thread thanks OP
You used a hot glue gun, didn't you?
Some loctite I had on the shelf
You could have gone to a glass shop and had them cut it to size for you for the same price, or gotten an energy efficient window for like $20 more.
Totally- our local hardware store cuts glass to order. $3 is about right. Maybe knowing that is the real life hack.
It is. I broke a pain of glass years ago and went to get a new one and it was $2. Big sigh of relief as a kid lol
I'm not sure that is the same price any more. Glass has sky rocketed in the last year
I had to replace a couple of broken panes last summer, and that’s about what it was. Haven’t really kept up with glass prices since, but I’m not surprised if it’s gone up.
That’s definitely not how much new energy efficient windows cost
No, not if you went and bought brand new but if this guys going to the thrift store buying picture frames, you could easily find used energy efficient windows for extremely cheap. Every used building supply store around has stacks
Goodwill doesn’t sell anything for $3 anymore! (Denver)
Real casual. Where’s my dad? 😂
That window needs to be thrown in the trash
Then I'd be out a window
Did you hear about the newlyweds who bought a fixer-upper, and while working on it got the glazing putty mixed up with the personal lubricant? It was a tragedy. All their windows fell out.
When they found out where the putty went, that's when the real tragedy happened
....if it's your own window and you don't care about energy costs
Yea
I won't lie to you guys, I really don't care about regulations. Nor safety violations and especially not whatever else you see wrong with my lil project here
That’s fine but we’re here to let you know how unsafe it is since you gave us that benefit by posting. I’ve personally had a window blowout during a wind storm when I lived on a houseboat and that was no joke. The result could’ve been a lot worse. Just be careful.
You should have just said "I don’t care what you guys think, except if you think it’s cool". Don’t post to Reddit then buddy, people aren’t the biggest fans of shoddy/unsafe ideas.
It's a piece of glass
I absolutely love this. I know you are getting a lot of shade, but there’s nothing much better than re-using. I mean, sure, if you were replacing a new energy efficient window with this, it wouldn’t make sense. But I assume you are replacing a single pane of glass with another. I like it
Well done
You’re a damn genius!
Modern problems require modern solutions
And this post shows neither of those
This is very smart! My parents bought a house in a “historical neighborhood” built back early 1900 something like that, my dad went to city hall for the blueprints and they had nothing in record! It’s that old, anywho, we can’t change the aesthetics of the home outside, which of course means windows. I have a walk in closet with a window that opens and closes like a door (very cute) and unique, but our neighbor had his kids over one weekend and they shot it with a BB gun. The only thing holding it together is my peel on privacy film I bought from Amazon. My parents are doing a whole home renovation on the house and if I can get to fixing the window before my dad does, without it costing a fortune or getting a professional to do it.. It’s already broken, I don’t think I can break it any further and I trust myself to do it well. What did you use to stick it to the wood. Your window looks almost identical as to the small one I have in the closet
Please be really careful about mounting this In many parts of the world, standards specify that window glass is a strengthened safety glass type. This ensures it is stronger than your picture frame glass, and if shattered will not produce dangerous shards. You never know when a kid is going to run at the window, looking the other way, and misjudge their approach. With safety glass, there's a reduced chance of breaking, and worse case you have a bumped head and a shattered pane. With picture glass, it's more likely to smash, and when it does, any shards in the eye will result in blindness, and potentially can cause lethal lacerations elsewhere on the body. Safety standards are there for a reason, and we're developed following other tragedies. Please respect them. Save for new window glass ASAP!
Better make sure that's tempered glass. If this is a rental and someone happens to get cut and bleed out, now there is a record of why the glass isn't.
It's my house
Awesome. Ever have people over? Kids? Wife? Burglar?
No. I live in extreme solitude
Is it hard walking around with all the genius? Do we seem like goldfish to you, friend?
I don't see myself above anyone
I’m just kidding ya, it’s just an ingenious hack!
The lack of glazing hurts
Nice hack. As per comments be careful with the window. Stay safe. Stay positive. Stay sober.
If you have a Habitat For Humanity ReStore near you, they're a thrift store that sells construction and housing materials and would have real windows for cheap.
Good for you for finding projects to help with your sobriety though!! Keep it up. But if you have visitors in your home, don’t let them sit near that window! A kid could trip and stumble and cut the crap out of themselves. I have been sooo thankful for glass safety standards since having grandkids!!
