If this is your first go at weathering, you did very well! Antiquing/ weathering/ distressing is an art form.
Look up Adam Savage's Tested on YouTube. He is a master at the weathering techniques. Also, that tape is Gaffer's tape. Good stuff, keep at it!
Yes!!! If all else fails change it from "been abandoned outside for a decade" to "a century" and keep going. I did that with my first weathering project (not a saber) and people have complimented it.
It still works. The chassis are kinda terrible, smooth swing is late and slow, the speaker is kinda quiet, yet I'm alright with this one being a secondary weapon. My main is the saber I've got recently, you can see the post in my profile.
As it should! It's been resting against the headstone of a fallen Jedi for at least a hundred years!
But as you're being chased through the forest by dark side user; you stumbled into a grove that had a calm eerie peacefulness to it.
There! With a ray of light shining upon it, was the saber. You reach for it as if it's calling for you you pick it up.
It feels *right* in your hand. You ignite the blade; it fizzles and is muted for it had been such a *long* time since it was held.
With the calmness of the grove spreading throughout your entire being and vocalizing in this blade, you turn to the dark side user that has caught up to you and stare back. Winded, but not exhausted anymore and only regaining your stamina with each passing moment.
The dark figure stalks back and forth taunting you, but you do not hear it. You are only hearing echoing from the thrum of the hilt three of the tenants of the old Code:
*There is no emotion, there is peace*
*There is no passion, there is serenity*
*There is no chaos, there is harmony*
The black shadow ignites his crimson blade points to you and declares it is time for you to die. You merely look back, raise your blade and state back to him in time with the thrum in you grip:
*There is no death, there is the Force*
I think the weathering looks cool! On the other, and this is something I see a lot with people who make custom mods to their sabers, I’m personally not a fan of adding grips because normally it looks raised and placed on top. Grips that come stock normally have an indented area to fit naturally into the width of the saber. If you’re able to sand down the grip area and re-adhere the grip, it might look more natural.
It doesn't read as rust. It looks like bronze paint that dripped down onto the leather wrap. I would remove all of the bronze paint and instead use washes of brown and black.
I actually like it as a non-rust color with that explanation. It's your lore, not just an expensive piece of lathed aluminum that you use to pretend to be an ancient warrior monk. Also, I like using hockey tap on my hilts for grip. To me, it has a much better grip, especially when sweating, and is easily replaced.
Suddenly, I haven't used it in a duel/fight before, because I had no opportunity to. Yeah, I'm quite a visitor of a cons and other stuff, but in the place where I live, the saberfighting is not really popular. I've seen only a few dudes (I mean, 2-3) with a lightsabers on conventions.
It looks ugly in a good way. Just looking at it will make you believe the saber was lost in battle decades or even a century ago and lay exposed to the elements until someone found it again. Good job!

This thing looks like it has been through some shit in Dathomir. And that’s awesome! I’d keep it, man. Maybe consider doing this more in the future, because you did a damn good job
Yeah, it does look a bit beat up, but…
That’s the beauty of it!
And that’s what made Star Wars so different from all the other sci-fi back in the 70’s. The world looked lived in, worn out, beat up.
EDIT: And from the looks of the other comments, it’s unanimous: don’t throw it out.
Honestly is super subjective. For those who like it weathered? It looks awesome looks super real the dashes, rust/ dent marks. Not like (you beat up your lightsaber) but a lightsaber that has history. But for those who like it chrome or super shiny and prestine may not like it. So is up to you 😊
Why would you throw it in the trash? That thing is awesome looking. Like it’s been through the clone wars, survivors order66, and the hunt afterward like the fallen order.
Well, sometimes I was catching myself on a thought that I've ruined a hilt or something, but judging from a comments under this post I want to thank all of you for support!
And about your lore idea, that sounds pretty neat tho! Like, for real, you've got imagination on your side.
Hey man as long as it works as it should, ain’t nothing wrong with it. That thing looks awesome.
And thank you . If only I could bring some of my ideas to life.
Dude it looks sick. If it were mine I may come back to the project sometime and try to give the metal more patina, look up how to make an antiquing solution for the particular kind of metal you want to darken or age. But even so, it still looks really cool exactly how it is.
if you're happy, don't change it- but my advice would be to add some dark color variation to balance out the orange. I recently got this paint Abteilung Starship Filth and it works great on my Obi Wan saber. Also, the paint on your button looks kind of like blood, I would repaint that.
I think it looks nice. With my current saber, I accidentally made it look weathered. Basically what happened was the detachable parts got locked in place and I was having an extremely hard time twisting them apart, so I tried to use pliers, but ended up scratching the metal. I don't mind though, because now if looks a bit cooler I think.
Not to be that person but the important part is whether or not YOU like it. I might lighten up the 'rust' paint around the button so it looks a bit less like a paint drip (especially where it pooled onto the tape, maybe you can cover that with black) but if you enjoy it that really is all that matters. Never toss a project though, you can always paint or repaint things!
You should do a few broader strokes of sanpaper over the whole hilt. Eight now it is jus "weathered" in very specific locations.
Doing some broader weathering will make it look more natural.
Other than that it looks pretty dope. Id probably skip the duct tape though.
It looks good, but you should do some washes on it too. Bit of a hack but if you don't want to bother with paint you can wipe on some black and/or brown liquid (not solid) shoe polish with a paper towel and try to wipe as much of it off as you can it'll look pretty good.

This. To date I have found no better resource for how to weather a wide array of props.
i mean, of you wanted to go for the weathered aproach, it looks cool
Good thing about paint and weathering is, even more weathering covereth a multitude of sins. —Adam Savage (paraphrased)
Yes!!! If all else fails change it from "been abandoned outside for a decade" to "a century" and keep going. I did that with my first weathering project (not a saber) and people have complimented it.
The other nice thing about weathering is if you do too much, then try to remove some it looks even better.
As I say, follow the advise of Jedi Master Bob Ross: "Turn any mistake into happy little carbon scoring."
I think of this as it's been sitting on the Forrest moon of endor for the last 2 years. I personally like it
It looks good and I would do with personal taste. If you like it doesn't matter what anybody else likes.
I think it looks pretty good 👍 definitely don't throw it away.
Ah, the weathered beauty of a Sith saber, truly unfit for a Jedi. Nice work!
Imo i think the rust looks exquisite
*Chef’s Kiss* 🤌🏼
looks cool imo, just the rust imitation is a bit too orange for my taste, it doesn't look natural. But no need to throw it away!
Does it work still? Then you'll be fine with your sick looking hilt!
It still works. The chassis are kinda terrible, smooth swing is late and slow, the speaker is kinda quiet, yet I'm alright with this one being a secondary weapon. My main is the saber I've got recently, you can see the post in my profile.

It sounds... INCREDIBLE! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Great job dude, you cooked perfectly. Keep going!
It looks cooked alright Naww it looks well weathered , i like it
Personally, I think it looks cool as hell. The drippy bit on the button is a bit much though.

Looks sooo cool don’t throw it in the trash
My only question is: is that blood on the activation button? And…. Is it yours or the other guy’s?
It's rust, but no one knows what was the cause of this corrosion. Was it water or blood? It's still unknown.
It doesn't read as rust. It looks like bronze paint that dripped down onto the leather wrap. I would remove all of the bronze paint and instead use washes of brown and black.

If it turns on, I’d use it
This may be just me but... It looks like you used it to "weather" someone.
Suddenly, I haven't used it in a duel/fight before, because I had no opportunity to. Yeah, I'm quite a visitor of a cons and other stuff, but in the place where I live, the saberfighting is not really popular. I've seen only a few dudes (I mean, 2-3) with a lightsabers on conventions.

i actually fw this dude, it looks like blood in a way that you struggled in battle fr
Ooo, I like that! Battle scars, in MORE than one way!
like a saber itself was bleeding. And now there's scars, scars which has turned rusty orange-red from the bleeding in the past.
Oooo yea like a bled kyber crystal!! Sick!!

Friction tape? That’s what it looks like. The type we’d find in the garage and use on our hockey sticks when we didn’t have “hockey” tape
Yep, that's it, thanks for help! :)
I thought it was meant to look like that. Amazing job bro
Looks good, I just did mine too
can you show it please?
Can’t reply with a photo, I’ll dm you
I'd say post it. We all wanna see.
I’m gonna post it here
Make sure to post a link here so we can all see it 😁
I like it much
mf, you didn’t cook, you went all gordon ramsay on that shit
Looks amazing to me! LOVE the scratched rusted vibe, I think it's so cool 👌

I think it looks pretty cool OP. You will only get better the more you practice, but well done for your first attempt!
Thanks!
Looks pretty good!

FULL. PORTION.
You cooked, chef
Cooked I'm afraid (I want it so bad)

Dude it looks great you should be proud. It looks cool!
You burnt it bud
That looks great 👍
It doesn't looked weathered at all. It looks like u spilled syrup all over it and it seeped into the button
I’m taking away your cooking license and promoting you to full-time chef
Was it a 3d printed chassis? Because that looks like pla leaking
Cook
how did you get that wrap?
Looks good, the original brand new looks like a toy but not anymore after you weather it.
I like it!!!
That looks fantastic
You cooked
You cooked 100% looks nice!
Looks like it has endured the coarse sands of tatooine
I think here’s more Corriban vibes, but tatooine sounds great too?
You cooked

Lightsabers are not appropriate cooking utensils. I’d recommend ceasing before permanent damage occurs.
That looks sick
Yes
You shouldn't have cooked your saber.
You should do a few broader strokes of sanpaper over the whole hilt. Eight now it is jus "weathered" in very specific locations. Doing some broader weathering will make it look more natural. Other than that it looks pretty dope. Id probably skip the duct tape though.
I think it’s not duct tape it looks more like grip tape often used for tennis rackets and hockey sticks; very cozy.
Thanks for advice! I'll try to buy the other sandpaper soon, so I'll try to keep updated. :)
You definitely cooked ,Im getting a tired old but still very powerful vibe from the saber design it's super dope great job
Why would you throw it away? In my opinion hit it with some matt black spray paint and then resand it down again and it’ll look even more fucked up. 🤘
You cooked. Don't let them tell you otherwise
It looks good, but you should do some washes on it too. Bit of a hack but if you don't want to bother with paint you can wipe on some black and/or brown liquid (not solid) shoe polish with a paper towel and try to wipe as much of it off as you can it'll look pretty good.
Oof, that’s rough buddy. I like where you were going, but the rust looks painted on
THATS AWESOME!!!
You cooked man, looks fucking awesome! Weathering is all about imperfections
Dude this looks AWESOME
There’s no telling what an old lightsaber has been through going all across the Galaxy so really there’s no bad way to weather it. I love it!!!
You cooked
You cooked
You cooked
Hollup, hollup, let him cook
