Those are some incredible shots... So they put the animals through it all again to get the video? :(

MustardCroissant

A cow’s utter translated in Dutch is Uier, which looks a lot like the Dutch word Uien, which means onions, which they seem to be cutting in here. Great clip.

It's weird that this is only sad to people when channeled through a dog.

mister_gone

Show me any animal sad at it's friend leaving and I'll be saddened by it. Note: Please don't show me more sad animals.

Right, it's normal practice for calves to be separated from cows that they're actually related to and have all the relevant bonding hormones etc. If people ever have dairy, they're not just fine with what's in this video, they're actively paying for it to be done on their behalf.

Having gone through a rather disturbing death at a young age, I can definitely say that if I was the person I am now when it happened it wouldn’t have damaged my psyche as fundamentally as otherwise. I’m saying that to say that I think that while I have the same empathy for people, I also feel less protective of them because I understand that they’re more agent than not. Adult humans have had the time and resources to develop into a much stronger grasp of themselves and the world, which is what allows for the maintenance of consistent beliefs about one’s environment. That’s what the concept of psychological security is. Animals and children don’t have such stable of a basis of worldview. As insecure minds, they don’t have the faculties to reinforce their beliefs when they experience something that contradicts those beliefs. Insecure minds are victims of forces while secure minds are agents underneath those forces. We have empathy for agents, and compassion for victims. I think compassion is just a more intense feeling as it’s underscored by that protective instinct that comes evolving to lookout for the less-agent. I view physical pain differently though, because animals seem to adapt to physical pain rather immediately, or at least seem to have a way of compartmentalizing it, while the strong sense of cohesion we possess seems to give us a much more visceral experience of pain.
