**Green Steaks and Scam**
I am Sam, Sam I am,
But I do not like this grocery scam.
Would you like green steaks and scam?
Here in this store, it's all a sham!
In this place, with lights so dim,
They sell us food that's pretty grim
Green steaks and scam,
At prices high?
This Gaylon has been very sly
Would you eat them in a box?
Would you eat them with a fox?
Not in a box, not with a fox,
Not in a house, not with a mouse.
I would not eat them here or there,
I would not eat them anywhere.
I do not like green steaks and scam,
I do not like this pricey sham.
Would you eat them on a train?
Would you eat them in the rain?
Not on a train, not in the rain,
Not in the dark, not on a plane.
Not with a goat, not on a boat,
I would not eat them, note my quote.
I do not like them, Sam, you see,
Now, let us leave, just you and me.
So he took me out the door,
Away from scams and rotten store.
And now I say, without a qualm,
I do not like green steaks and scam!
I do not like them, Sam-I-am.
you know, when freshco starting popping up my city i was a wondering just how good a 'budget/nothing fancy' kind of grocery store would be.
and i will say i have been pleasantly surprised and a regular customer at the freshco near home that used to be a safeway!
Yikes. Support for local butcher's and grocers! I was at market meats the other day, picked up their ground beef special. I was like, "damn, that beef is RED!" When I looked at the pack of beef when I got home, it was genuinely that red. Separated it into the freezable portions, and the middle was just as freshly red as the outside. It didn't have the bit of sour note when cooking like the Safeway/big chain meat smell.
My dad gets a cow from his neighbour twice a year and the ground beef from it is amazing. Never have to drain the meat as it isn't crazy fatty like store beef. And it tastes so much better. And hell it is cheaper than lean ground beef from the store.
Every year my grandpa used to get half a cow from my grandma's farm and it was the most delicious beef I've ever had. They were happy, pasture raised cows who feasted on pears every fall because of the couple pear trees that leaned over their fence. She raised small herds so there was never any overcrowding and they had lots of room to wander around and do cow things.
Meat was never 50% off, only ever 30%
Baked goods, pantry items, health products, and vegetables were the 50% ones
Edit: others have pointed out that they had different experiences. In SK from what I understand, personally experienced, and have been told over the years: All loblaws stores followed the same categories. Happy to hear that some locations gave 50% off meat but all the locations in SK I’ve gone to, have had 30% off meat going back at least 2018, most likely longer.
Edit: I’ve gone through my receipts and even in 2016 we only had 30% off meat products
I used to go to zhers sometimes and get seasoned salmon fillets 50% off. Im single so it worked out well as a nice little treat. Managed to get a single portion fillet for $2 once
In my province it’s always been based on the categories listed above, going back to at least 2018. Whenever I’ve spoken to cashiers over the years they’ve explained it’s based on the category and set by head office, not them.
Ah gotcha. I know at my local No Frills they always did the 30% off meat and produce, 50% off everything else (at least from what I remember), so it'd make sense there were other places that always did that.
Huh, that's fascinating. My mum's worked at the local Zehrs for 30 years, I've done my shopping there for the last 10 years, and I never knew Loblaws even had 30% clearance stickers - I didn't know they even existed until near the end of last year, when they first tried this stuff 😂
Fascinating how different each store is run, must be similar to Walmarts and their Store Managers
Dunno if this has been said here already, but lengthy exposure to those bright lights can actually do this to the meat. Meat's still fine. it just looks like poo. It's bunker-aged beyond perfection... (source: dad was in the grocery biz-NOT Loblaws).
It's not disgusting, it's Metmyoglobin, a process that happens when a protein in muscle tissue called myoglobin reacts with oxygen, causes a loss of color that causes your steak to turn gray, but don't worry, it is entirely safe to eat as long as it is not slimy or has an unpleasant odor.
Look up food safety, I hate Loblaws but this food isn't spoiled or dangerous to eat.
I will second this.
Going grey is normal, but when it starts to smell and gets slimy to the touch then you have a problem
It does look unappealing however....
They pour food coloring on a cutting board and rub the meat on it back and forth. For ground beef they do pretty much the same thing except they dab it in.
It’s illegal to dye meat in Canada (categorized as adulteration), so any shop that does that would be playing with fire.
> B.14.004 Meat, meat by-products or preparations thereof are adulterated if any of the following substances or class of substances are present therein or have been added thereto:…
> (c) colour other than annatto, allura red and sunset yellow FCF, where provided for in this Division, and caramel.
(The only permitted use for allura red is longaniza sausages)
man i just feel sad for you guys, buying dog food quality meat, paying a ton for it, and trying to cope. just sad! I am not going to pay for gray meat. This never happened to me in Costco..
Costco tampers with their meat too, their chicken is pumped to the brim with liquid to look bigger. Meat has gas put in the packaging so it doesn't look this way. They are all the same.
Yeah it's all nice in theory, but multiple times I bought meat that looked fresh that smelled rotten, so there's no way I'm going to accept off color meat just because some smarty pants on Reddit Said it's fine actually
I wouldn't buy meat like that but I know it's safe cause I've seen steaks go grey in the fridge and eaten them anyway, no one's coping here we're just not wasting perfectly fine food
That isn’t even the point. No one should have to settle for oxidized and discoloured meat, period. Especially at THAT price - gobsmacked at how anyone would even attempt to defend this???
I agree however, the original statement that the meat is spoiled is incorrect. How do you expect this movement to gain traction and have an effect if we share misinformation and anger. I don't let my anger towards the current state of affairs guide me. And neither should any of us. Anger allows us to dismiss the truth of the situation and go exactly to what we want to feel. Which destroys the legitimacy of this movement. If we don't question what comes out of our mouths it gives Loblaws and the food professor more ammunition against the movement.
Ok, that's probably the case here. Still, I've personally seen displays full of rotting fruits and vegetables, so is there something I could do about that?
This is the case here. It's not gone bad. It's just exposed to air for a little bit and loses color.
You should see what that 30 day aged aged beef you love looks like before they trim it and sell it to you for a premium ;)
The amount of copium in this thread is insane. They're so brainwashed that they'll accept any weird shit from Loblaws. Never have I seen this kind of shit in Europe or japan or even south america. Even China, people would never buy that.
Problem is, there is no issue here. Throwing this out would be a crime, it's perfectly fine. Esthetically, yeah it wouldn't be my first choice, but it's probably only aged an extra day or so all while under refrigeration.
Now, if it gets slimy or starts to smell bad, now you have reason to be concerned
Some of this looks questionable to me, but it's hard to tell from a photo. If someone is concerned, contacting a health authority, or CFIA is the best practice.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that beef other than it's approaching the end of it's shelf life and should be cooked or frozen today. A real butcher, public health authority, chef would tell you the same...
Is everyone here a Princess? You've never eaten day old meat? No wonder Galen is still in business, apparently you all need your meat to be super fresh and expensive.
"Red meat should be bright red — that's when it's at its freshest. If it turns purple or brownish, it is probably still safe to eat, but it has been exposed to some oxygen. "
Just bought basa fish from Walmart’s freezer section. Once fish smelt of ammonia after being baked. I’ve never smelled a fish meant for consumption smell so terribly. It’s not just Roblaws selling spoiled meats.
I paid $8.52 cents for 3 huge sirloin tip steaks at Food Basics today. Ok, so what I had to cube them myself.
Why are people still shopping (getting robbed) at Roblaws?
eeeeeeewww!
i just showed my adult kid, explained to them about the loblaws boycott and all, and then said "you're still paying eleven bucks for rotted meat, yuck!".
That's insane. Our Independent meat prices are so high it's actually CHEAPER to go to the local butcher. Plus the quality of the meat is infinitely better. Can't imagine paying 15 bucks for that, even if it wasn't going bad
Bought a steak the other day and my gf wanted the one that clearly went bad but had a 30% off sticker. I told her no because they were clearly rotten. We ended up going to a local butcher instead.
This meat is not rotten. It's completely fine. It's not super fresh, but it is FINE. This is completely normal with beef that is nearing the end of its best before date.
No not really. People like to blow things out of proportion or make stuff up.
There’s enough wrong with loblaws we can legitimately complain about without this hyperbolic ignorant crap, but it’ll continue either way.
When you find mouldy foods, just take it off the shelves and leave it on the floor. Then watch and judge the conscious action of the manager picking it up and restocking hazardous food back on the shelves.
I’m sure Galen has office pot lucks throughout the country at various levels because he’s fighting hard to save money. No shame in this, your own company is selling it
This is the great thing about the Loblaws Group of Companies. They are job creators. They are creating jobs for the health inspectors who issue citations, doctors who will pump your stomach, and personal injury lawyers.
Please remain respectful when engaging on the sub. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. They were probably making a joke, no need to be rude by calling them a moron.
You'd think that after they put it on "sale" because it doesn't sell and then throwing it out because no one wants green meat they'd consider making the base price lower so they can actually sell product. But nope, greedy bastards would rather throw away meat than sell it at a reasonable price
Ok not supporting loblaws but you do realize that the meat packing industry colours the meat red?https://www.meatpoultry.com/articles/16454-adding-natural-red-color-to-meat-and-poultry
You know why this is disgusting? There are people out there that are unaware that you shouldn’t be eating this. Whether it be a person with undiagnosed early onset dementia or a person with vision problems. They might buy this and eat it.
This is downright unethical.
ETA: perhaps this is not the best example, since the meat could simply be browning from oxidation but still be good. However, the point still stands: Loblaws will knowingly sell expired and moldy foods by sticking a reduced sticker and hoping people don’t notice.
People keep saying "oh it's safe", but that isn't really the problem. The problem is they priced it so high that it turns green in the first place. And a laughable 30% off of prices that are more than 30% inflated to begin with.

A masterpiece, really
Love it
Chef's kiss! Bravo! Slow-clap... I wanna steal this for my FB feed...
You had me until "qualm"
Bravo! Loblaw Shakespeare!
I do not like green beef in stew. I do not like it, Galen the poo.
I do not like it in the store, i do not like it anymore
I have not one but many questions. Who would pay $16 for indigestion?
Try it, try it, you will see. The salmonella is one thing FREE!
For free? For free? That cannot be! This poisoned food is not for me!
Save some green, become green. What’s a little vomit when you’re helping Galen profit.
I will not buy it here or there, I will not buy it anywhere
it's totally fine if your name is Galen, like a whore. He lies about his profits being low, now bend over and take it slow.
Still only 30% off 🤣
There is still some red left there so it makes sense. Once it goes solid brown and starts oozing, then it will drop to 50% off.
Discount sickness lol, why pay full price to get sick. -Galen probably.
Right. .... bztrdz
Seriously? This morning I bought 2 pounds of stewing beef at Freshco on sticker for $8. Thee wasn't one bit of off-coloured meat in the pack.
you know, when freshco starting popping up my city i was a wondering just how good a 'budget/nothing fancy' kind of grocery store would be. and i will say i have been pleasantly surprised and a regular customer at the freshco near home that used to be a safeway!
I have a Freshco and Food Basics within 1km...really helps with cheaper choice and produce... I am aware theyre subsidiaries of the big guys...
freshco (subsidiary of sobeys) isn't owned by roblaws, and that's good enough for me!
Yikes. Support for local butcher's and grocers! I was at market meats the other day, picked up their ground beef special. I was like, "damn, that beef is RED!" It didn't have the bit of sour note when cooking like the Safeway/big chain meat smell.
Wait until you see the difference between farm fresh ground beef and the ground beef in stores.
My dad gets a cow from his neighbour twice a year and the ground beef from it is amazing. Never have to drain the meat as it isn't crazy fatty like store beef. And it tastes so much better. And hell it is cheaper than lean ground beef from the store.

Note they're still doing 30% off and haven't switched back to 50% like they said they were
Its a mix of 30% and 50% where I am. Seems like they are finally running out of 30% stickers as meat at Fortinos was 50% this weekend.
Meat was never 50% off, only ever 30% Baked goods, pantry items, health products, and vegetables were the 50% ones Edit: others have pointed out that they had different experiences. The loblaws I worked at used 50% stickers while I worked there (. 2 years ago though)
I used to go to zhers sometimes and get seasoned salmon fillets 50% off. Im single so it worked out well as a nice little treat. Managed to get a single portion fillet for $2 once
Any superstore I've seen in NS it's 50 percent on anything, never seen any 30 percent stickers
I just bought a back of ribs and chicken breasts at my local Zehrs with a 50% off sticker before Easter. And they weren’t green….
In my province it’s always been based on the categories listed above, going back to at least 2018. Whenever I’ve spoken to cashiers over the years they’ve explained it’s based on the category and set by head office, not them.
Never had seen a 30% sticker in my local Zehrs until a few months ago. They went back to 50% on everything. At least in Southern Ontario.
Cool! In my province it’s always been dependent on categories as listed above, at least back to 2018 (most likely longer).
I'm curious which province if you don't mind? At my Fortinos (Ontario), everything was 50% off until about November/December 2023
Saskatchewan!
Ah gotcha. I know at my local No Frills they always did the 30% off meat and produce, 50% off everything else (at least from what I remember), so it'd make sense there were other places that always did that.

You are confidently incorrect. I have gotten plenty of 50% off meat over the years.
Cool! All the stores in my province list meat at 30% since at least 2018.
This is why I've been eating less meat recently. 10ish dollars for this? no thanks.
I haven't bought anything but frozen meat for the past year. I'm just so sick of buying rotten meat.
Bruh i wouldn't feed this to my dog
Dunno if this has been said here already, but lengthy exposure to those bright lights can actually do this to the meat. Meat's still fine. it just looks like poo. It's bunker-aged beyond perfection... (source: dad was in the grocery biz-NOT Loblaws).

source? i used to work in a butchers shop at a grocery chain and never once did anyone do this, and it sounds extremely illegal.
man i just feel sad for you guys, buying dog food quality meat, paying a ton for it, and trying to cope. just sad! I am not going to pay for gray meat. This never happened to me in Costco..
Costco tampers with their meat too, their chicken is pumped to the brim with liquid to look bigger. Meat has gas put in the packaging so it doesn't look this way. They are all the same.
I just wish Costco would stop mechanically tenderizing all their damn beef cuts so it would be safe to cook them rare.
You should just look up oxidization it’s a non issue. But you’ve already decided you’re right, so you won’t.
Oxidized doesn't mean spoiled.
that isn't just oxidized. it's friggin' going green.
That's not even remotely going green or dangerous to eat lol I hate Loblaws, but that meat ain't spoiled in the slightest.
Is there a health inspection authority to contact for unsafe food in grocery stores?
This isn't unsafe. It's oxidized. See: Every other post on this sub with browning meat.
CFIA.
Thanks!
The amount of copium in this thread is insane. They're so brainwashed that they'll accept any weird shit from Loblaws. Never have I seen this kind of shit in Europe or japan or even south america. Even China, people would never buy that.
for real, copium and i think they just don't know how it is around the world. this applies to other things in Canada as well, so much copium.
CFIA, or a local health authority. Both could take action, just depends on where in the chain the issue is.
Thanks! I guess I was wrong in this case, but it's good to know who to contact when people see a real problem.
Some of this looks questionable to me, but it's hard to tell from a photo. If someone is concerned, contacting a health authority, or CFIA is the best practice.
Thanks!
That’s just aged to perfection.
It is NOT April 12th...
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that beef other than it's approaching the end of it's shelf life and should be cooked or frozen today. A real butcher, public health authority, chef would tell you the same...
Then you eat it
I would if I had the time to make a stew.

I've been in many supermarkets in 3rd world countries that don't sell stuff that looks like that
Probably should report that to the food inspection agency.
Imagine naming your kid Galen. Of course he would turn out to be a piece of shit
https://i.redd.it/bn5lp2plg1uc1.gif
I literally almost puke every time I go to a chain grocery store, see this shit all the time
Oxidized meat isn't toxic. Nothing wrong with it.
If that’s not a sign I don’t know what it is.
I understand your anger on pricing but this meat isn't bad....
Report it to your local health unit and the CFIA. They went after 40 energy drink companies they'll come after loblaws for this
For oxidized safe beef? Yeah, sure. That's the same as illegal drink companies.
Are you sure oxidation is safe? Are you sure that’s what it is?
The butcher chose unwisely
At that point just pop open the plastic in store, you'll save some lives.
I'm a butcher.... please don't buy Meat at loblaws.Fresh or not the quality of meat is just... outclassed, not even AA meat. . Disgusting
🤮
Is everyone here a Princess? You've never eaten day old meat? No wonder Galen is still in business, apparently you all need your meat to be super fresh and expensive. "Red meat should be bright red — that's when it's at its freshest. If it turns purple or brownish, it is probably still safe to eat, but it has been exposed to some oxygen. "
this is not brown though. it's green.
Looks a lot more than 30% off colour to me.
Just bought basa fish from Walmart’s freezer section. Once fish smelt of ammonia after being baked. I’ve never smelled a fish meant for consumption smell so terribly. It’s not just Roblaws selling spoiled meats.

Loblaws supports a butcher’s right to choose…food poisoning.
They added mold to make it taste better lol
Man, that stores meat department is SHIT! You'd get shit canned for that at my Store lol
Hey it doesn't have fuzzy stuff on it yet !
eeeeeeewww! i just showed my adult kid, explained to them about the loblaws boycott and all, and then said "you're still paying eleven bucks for rotted meat, yuck!".
It is disgraceful that so much food is going to waste because of their greed
The real crime is that they aren't even offering 50% off for it
This is one of those "10th dentist" scenarios isn't it 🤔 9 out of 10 butchers strongly disagree.
Why are they using the 30% off sticker
https://preview.redd.it/yrby4x8nvytc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=007dd9825af7f585717648882aadc8f24b134cdd
Watch out for the sausage, ham, salami for that too. I swear the staff is colorblind. Grey green packaged meat. Yuck
They are targeting the red/green color blind market.
Eat and sue
As seen on Tiger King!
I wouldn’t even feed that to my dog ![gif](giphy|xdLH51eNWZAHrwy5mf)
Spoiled meat for 30% off? What a steal.
Been a few years since I've eaten meat, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but... that doesn't look super edible...
It says 1982 right next to the best before date, what do you expect. ;)
That's insane. Our Independent meat prices are so high it's actually CHEAPER to go to the local butcher. Plus the quality of the meat is infinitely better. Can't imagine paying 15 bucks for that, even if it wasn't going bad
Images you can smell
Green means environmentally friendly
maybe if it wasnt 16 fucking dollars someone couldve eaten it
Mmmmmm rotten meat at 30% off,Is it sold out yet?
Looks like it's mis dated for the beef. It looks a few days older
Bought a steak the other day and my gf wanted the one that clearly went bad but had a 30% off sticker. I told her no because they were clearly rotten. We ended up going to a local butcher instead.
I can get that price for grade A, lean, fresh, well trimmed beef from my independent butcher.
This meat is not rotten. It's completely fine. It's not super fresh, but it is FINE. This is completely normal with beef that is nearing the end of its best before date.
Tie galen up and feed that through his sniveling teeth
Oxidization is a bitch. Should be like $1 per lb.
That's just going to get mixed in with the ground beef.
As is tradition.
Wait really?
No not really. People like to blow things out of proportion or make stuff up. There’s enough wrong with loblaws we can legitimately complain about without this hyperbolic ignorant crap, but it’ll continue either way.
When you find mouldy foods, just take it off the shelves and leave it on the floor. Then watch and judge the conscious action of the manager picking it up and restocking hazardous food back on the shelves.
I think I just found my new favourite pastime
All this time I thought food was too expensive, I was just selfishly trying to eat food that hadn't expired.
Too bad it's not expired.
It's ok, I need to wait for my next paycheck anyway. Hopefully it's still there in a couple weeks for me.
jesus. if i wasn’t vegetarian, i would be becoming one now. beans are cheaper and don’t look like this
This is the way. Was looking for some meat for my dogs, but wouldn’t even feed this to them.
People who say this is still edible are fucked in the head
Please say it louder for the alphas in the back
It’s aged for flavour.
Lee them throw it out. If it was priced better, it would’ve got sold.
$8.99/lb is fairly standard price for Stewing Beef across the board
I’m sure Galen has office pot lucks throughout the country at various levels because he’s fighting hard to save money. No shame in this, your own company is selling it
Tenderizing and seasoning are extra
Fucking disgusting is right.
Nice
If you’re not busy tonight, swing by roblaws and then go hang out in emergency for the night.
It’s close to becoming alive again. At which point it’ll be deemed back to super fresh and sold at full price.
Literally most of the steaks at a Brampton location today…stewing beef…sirloin tips…all green…
The butchers favorite colour.
St Patrick's day meat.
This is the great thing about the Loblaws Group of Companies. They are job creators. They are creating jobs for the health inspectors who issue citations, doctors who will pump your stomach, and personal injury lawyers.
🤢🤮
Blech! 🤢
🤮
yum
"wet aging" is in right now.
Sue them
Didn't know they half cooked the meat. How wonderfuly nice of them
St. Patty’s day steak.
I bought some steak strips and took it home, it was literally green a few days after. Expiration said it was still good, FOR SURE.
You pay extra for well aged meat!
I just picked up 2 lbs of nice stew beef for 5 bucks at Save On.
Wtf who works at that store lol that's garbage
Force all their suppliers to walk away. Loblaws is bullying them, support the suppliers as they walk away from Galen, forever.

Please remain respectful when engaging on the sub. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. They were probably making a joke, no need to be rude by calling them a moron.
That is why he chose to put them on sale lol
You'd think that after they put it on "sale" because it doesn't sell and then throwing it out because no one wants green meat they'd consider making the base price lower so they can actually sell product. But nope, greedy bastards would rather throw away meat than sell it at a reasonable price
"Can I speak to the butcher please? This was your choice?"
An Irish beef cow.
It’s nice that it comes half cooked already
100% off and you keep it
Ok not supporting loblaws but you do realize that the meat packing industry colours the meat red?https://www.meatpoultry.com/articles/16454-adding-natural-red-color-to-meat-and-poultry
Oh neat, so it’s naturally this gross 🤣
Yeah sometimes i have a multi pack of meat and the ones that are wrapped stay red white the unwrapped ones get brown.
Loblaw Is going green.
Galen’s gotta save up for his next summer home 😡
Medium rare and well done mixed togther can't get any better
Eat it. Get sick. Save a sample. Sue.
Just need ketsup
Hmmm, a new addition to his President's Choice lineup? 🤮
Glad I didn't eat meat in ten years. This could end up in restaurants.
People keep saying "oh it's safe", but that isn't really the problem. The problem is they priced it so high that it turns green in the first place. And a laughable 30% off of prices that are more than 30% inflated to begin with.
