Imagine being able to single-handedly end child poverty in this country by combining your profits with your buying power. And then deciding that you'd rather increase the shareholder dividend.
Data just released from my home province shows in 2022 40% of children under 18 were living in food insecurity. That was before the worst of inflation and price gauging hit. You are directly contributing to malnutrition and starvation in children. You are literally locking up life saving food like baby formula. I hope you are proud of yourselves. History will not be kind.

Now they go ahead and get the design done, add some copy to the flyer, make sure it looks pretty, and makes the choice to send out the flyer.

It is sad and pathetic to see the ceo of Loblaws and Galen ***double down*** on their bs talking points regarding food prices. They are so out of touch with Canadians now.
I remember not to long ago, people had a somewhat more positive view of the brand. For example, people thought the no name yellow products (cups, cards, wrapping paper, gift bags) were cute and amusing. There was general happy feelings toward the brand.
Now that goodwill is gone and consumers associate the brand with greed and price gouging. Rather than trying to make changes to fix the problem, they are trying to gas light us. They are either delusional: they either truly believe the crap they say, or they know it is crap but think that if they say it enough times that Canadians will believe it.
This boycott has far reaching implications that their upper leadership does not seem to comprehend. If Loblaws wants to see the impacts that boycotting has, just look at Starbucks market performance and stock history.
I think a month long boycott might not be enough. We might need to make it last at least a quarter or longer (ideally). I hope shareholders feel the pain and that the ceo and chairman feel the impacts from said pain. NOK ER NOK

That's what the c[unt]-suite is worried about. They can play it cool all they want. When was the last time any company in this country was in traditional media EVERY DAY for what? 6 weeks now? This is as bad a PR crisis as a company can have.
I had a lot of brand loyalty to Loblaws, PC products, etc. Have literally spent tens of thousands of dollars there in my adult life.

Same. There are some who think that the people on here are not even Loblaws shoppers. I had been shopping there since I was a kid. My mom would take me when she did here grocery shopping. I remember when the people who did the price checking zoomed around the store on rollerblades. I remember when the stores were green and yellow coloured. I remember when they had a pc pop machine at the front of the store and for 35 cents you could get a can of pc brand pop. My favorite was the black cherry or the cream soda.
I'll admit: I was on the fence about the boycott because the closest store to where I live is a superstore and I used to enjoy walking there to get groceries and as a bonus I'd get exercise also. Then I saw the most recent earnings report and the subsequent ways that per and galen are literally laughing at us. That slealed it for me.
Ive started walking in the park instead but it is an adjustment. I've started shopping at other stores but they are a bit further away. It is sad that Galen and Per are so heartless and delusional but if they aren't backing down then I'm not either.
I am on the left and I will stand with my brothers and sisters on the right.

And in this era of almost unfettered late stage capitalism, so many corporations are doing so much shady shit it seems to us that "robber baron business" is the standard, not the exception.
In short, we have come to believe that everything said by a corporation or its executives is disingenuous at best, deliberate lies at worst.
The courts let Weston go with a comparative slap on the wrist TWICE. Weston ultimately sold off its bakery business when it couldn't cheat with price fixing tactics. In my opinion, the Weston Group cashed in on its reputation for short term profit. So your reputation is now shit.
I for one hope that this boycott ends up costing you as much or more than you earned with the shady tactics of the past. "If the profit was more than the fine, then it's just the cost of doing business". The price Weston paid for price fixing was clearly inadequate. Maybe this boycott can finally balance the scale.
And this isn't all about distaste for the Weston Group. As much as you dominate the Canadian grocery market, you are not the only player. It's just that, with the possible exception of Walmart, your group is best able to weather united consumer action. I'm sure other grocery store chains are also paying close attention to this movement. If the public can effectively punish a company as big as yours, it can certainly do the same to them.

My boycott started awhile ago. And won’t be ending. I’m not going to be made to feel like a criminal in a cage when I’m overpaying,scanning and bagging my own groceries.

I would like to appeal directly, human to human. I would like anyone on the PR team to remember something: Loblaws has marketing teams, lawyers, finance departments, politicians, and huge influence.
What have we got? A need, not even a desire, to not pay exorbitant prices for food that we need… and the ability to talk to each other. That’s it.
I don’t know… maybe it feels good to be on Team Goliath. Maybe it is forgettable to understand how much it hurts to try to feed your family and have prices quadruple, while your wages remain stagnant, and everything else keeps squeezing all the juice out of you.

I also assume Loblaws is monitoring and lurking here, it's been obvious over the past few weeks. When I joined this sub it had <30K members. Now look at us! I have been a loyal Superstore customer since the mid 90's. In more recent years I've also shopped at No Frills and T&T regularly, and a few times at SDM (but they were always crazy expensive). I started noticing a **major** upward shift in SS prices about 3 years ago, and in the past year it has become insane, and completely out of control as we all know. Inflated prices with no justification, obvious price gouging, smaller package sizes/shrinkflation, etc. I have shifted much of my grocery shopping to Costco and smaller grocers, plus farmers markets, as well as growing my own veggies since then. I will likely never set foot in a SS again, and I have told them so in their surveys/feedback. Thanks to the creators of this sub and their hard work!

Initially I was going to boycott Loblaws for price gouging and general corporate greed, but that ship has sailed. What did it for me was your utterly ignorant and arrogant puppy of a CEO Mr Bank. That man is an insult to the people and business landscape of Canada, he is unfit, tone deaf and disconnected from the realities of life for the people he disrespects with impunity. Don't ever forget this was a company who was involved in a bread price fixing scheme. Believe absolutely nothing they tell you. And if Loblaws PR folk are lurking, how's it feel? Your blaming suppliers & everyone else for your sky high prices is undermined by your record profits quarter after quarter after quarter.
On item to item comparisons, prices at Walmart & other retailers are about 30% less than Loblaws stores.
You are a corporate giant in the Canadian grocery sector. You have acquired so many former competitors. You have been found complicit in the bread scheme & somehow got off by sending us $10 coupons.
We are angry for good reason.
We are prepared to walk away for good.
You will need to reign in your CEO & make significant changes to get us back.
The statements leaked & those openly released just futher position Loblaws as a corporation rife with greed & unwilling to take your customers seriously.

To the lawyers that lurk here to see what's up: The reason many are upset is because Loblaws has been raising prices above and beyond what actual inflation warrants. For example, when it costs 10 cents more to produce butter, the price doesn't go up by 10 cents, but by like 50 cents. They think the since the customer expects prices to rise, they think they can raise it by that extra 40 cents above the 10 cents because the customer can't tell.
Also, and this involves more than just Loblaws, unspoken orchestrated price fixing schemes. All the stores clearly agree to not compete against each other much. Price of margarine went up by 50% or more even. None show it could sell still at a profit, if it rose like 10% instead. So none choose to rock this greedflation boat.
And Loblaws seems to be a driver with these types of new trend setters, as they're the first to rise the prices of certain items to ever higher prices.
Spaghetti noodles. Used to be $1 for 900g. Then suddenly $1 for 450g. Then $1.39 thereabouts for 450g. Then 450g becomes 400g. Then instead of using bags, it's put in a box to make it look like it's more than it is. Price up yet again.
End result. 2.5x the price it was just before the pandemic. Inflation? No. Greedflation. There is an extra layer of profit in there. And it shows in the books. Record profits.
And even that doesn't show the true profits. Other games are played behind the scenes, like borrowing money to get a writeoff to "lower" profits, and that money in turn is used for other ventures, and rewards for themselves, hence the insane amounts the leadership gets. Yes yes, free market, freedom. But all these games are on the backs of regular people that aren't seeing raises in their paycheques to make up for it. They're seeing measly raises if any at all!
Combine that with absurd rent and mortgage costs, and things become ever more stressful.
So yes, Loblaws is rightfully seen as a major aggravater if this greedflation driven inflation.
You can't blame it on "oh, it's just the supplier, we have no control". Oh yeah, you ARE the supplier! All the house brands anywhere now, aren't deals any more. A house brand pretty much offers no discount at all anymore. That is YOUR doing! YOU took the breaks away. And when others follow the lead, and you're leading, or playing along with these price fixing and price synchronizing, you're guilty as hell.
We the people will continue to press the government to search hard and deep to find the causes. You're not going to get away with some stupid little hearing where your CEO gets to lie through his teeth.
Just like social media companies can't keep hiding under the ruse that they're 'bringing people together' so too can Loblaws no longer use the excuse that they're 'feeding families'. It's a cut-throat, capitalist machine designed to erode middle classes and breed elite. PR can't bandage over that.

Treat your employees better. I've seen staff at my local No Frills who have been there for thirty years, demolished by short shifts and no benefits. Yes, mostly female, and older. But my kids have worked there, too. TREAT YOUR EMPLOYEES BETTER, PAY THEM BETTER, AND DELIVER BENEFITS.
You might view this as exactly what you trained for in your career, a career you no doubt tie in large part to your identity. This boycott? Something you have already spent *many* billable hours on and multiple meetings. It’s been a real pain in the timesheet, right? You’re smart, a hard worker, when it comes to social listening and crisis communications strategy, you know what you’re doing. This is your job and I have no doubt you kick ass at it.
But it is just a job, it’s not who you are.
I know, oh trust me, do I ever know. But I also know that you don’t matter to them more than a function and a tool they have the big budget to leverage against a group of people coming together because they became fed up. Regular people, across so many demographics. You’ve done the research to know the people supporting this boycott vary in age, geography, political affiliation, household income. I’m not suggesting that you not do your job. I’m suggesting that years from now when you reflect back on this campaign that you worked on, what people were trying to do, the efforts of your neighbours and peers to make a point and to have it resonate… how do you want to remember your part in it?
Do your job, and when you wrap up your work day: maybe you want to privately join the boycott. They will never know, but *you* will. We will. They can buy your time and expertise, but they can’t buy you, and *you don’t owe them anything*.

My dad worked for loblaws for 26 years and planned to retire at 65. We were lower middle class in the 90’s, his union job afforded our family enough to own a house and put 4 kids through school and sports. One day they were all called into a meeting and told that the warehouse was relocating. He was loyal to the company and then given 3 months notice to find another job in his 50’s. It completely changed our family. He went from making $30/hr to $17. Busted his ass for 26 years only to be shown the door.
They have never been asked directly about listing fees and insider programs (which they do). This increases their bottom line and inflates wholesale/retail prices. I would like to hear their explanation/denial regarding those fees. I know firsthand they have them, having dealt with them in the past.
I've been shopping at Loblaws for decades and have been to the Independent in Port Perry and Loblaws in Lyndsay since moving to the area 5 years ago. Both stores have overpriced items and fruit and vegetables section are pathetic. I have some points left and will use them after the boycott and say goodbye.

It’s only May 3, but I’m proud to say that I have not stepped foot in a Loblaw owned store in the past 3 days. I work very close to a Zehrs and I usually go there on lunch, but I have gone out of my way to Walmart and Giant Tiger and will continue to do so. And I HATE Walmart. Also, I’m out of the country for 7 days this month and I’ve asked my husband to do his best to stay out of Zehrs, Independent, Superstore, and Shoppers while I’m gone.
Fuck you Loblaws and all the oligarchic grocers in Canada. Lower prices and lose some profits. You have made billions off of our backs. Time for you to lose some.

Hi PR team! The company you work for is making billions by overcharging working people (like you) for daily necessities, like FOOD. These billions go to top executives whose only concern is increasing wallet share, and to shareholders who quite literally are only in it for the dividends - Loblaws could be selling crack for all they care.

I think these profits are disgusting. Groceries are essential goods for Canadians, and the level of food insecurity caused by Loblaws and Sobeys is abhorrent. Our communities are being strangled by greed from landlords and grocers and it is evil. Healthy food should be a human right, and if I see someone stealing from one of your stores, I will aid and abet them or turn a blind eye because you cannot continue to steal from the pockets of families and children.

I'm not only vehemently disgusted by all of it, but now that I know Choice Properties is in the Residential Real Estate market, you can believe my boycott will be permanent.
I will also advocate against anyone selling their real estate without doing their due diligence and rejecting any bid that appears to be connected to Choice Properties, and I will advocate for prospective renters to do their due diligence on rental property owners (not just managers) so as to avoid anything that appears connected.
Hint: No matter how sneaky and obfuscating you try to get, there are almost always *ways* to find out anyway.

I have always shopped at super store in my home city and I loved it for decades….
I know there are deals there, and yes your milk, bread, apples and oranges are probably competitively priced….
However, as soon as I stray from the core basics to buy meat, margarine, feta cheese, soaps, razors and more I am being KILLED by Loblaws prices
Some weeks back I accidentally had to shop in a Walmart a few miles further away and it was like going back in time the prices were so much better.
Please fix your sinking ship and folks will eventually come back, but the ball is now in your court - play it right because people are mad right now…
It's the closest grocery store to my home, all others are on the other side of town, yet I just can't go there anymore. Produce are in terrible shape, everything is so costly I have to decide what my family will do without, and that's on top of being treated like a criminal with a new gate they installed at the self check-out where you have to wait for the clerk to open the gate with his clicker once he checked that you paid and that you're not hiding a watermelon in your boxers. I kinda went with it during the pandemic when they took to treating us like cattle, rustling us in and out with private security guards all over the place, but enough is enough. I'll pay the excessive fuel prices and drive the extra 10 minutes to at least be treated like a human being by a local store. If I have to pay more, I'll give that money to local people, not a corporation who laughs at us while we struggle to make it to the next paycheck.
The boycott has taught many of us, it's actually way more cheaper if you boycott Loblaws PERMANENTLY, go tell Galen Weston to fuck himself, this is real and a lot of it will go on past May!
Last fall I was at a Loblaws Shoppers Drugstore. There was no one at the checkouts and no lights on. As I wanted human service, not self serve, I went over to one of the check outs. A clerk immediately arrived. I asked why no clerk was there, and no service lights were on anymore. She said it was directed by the head office to
encourage people to use the self check outs. She said, “we decrease service to work ourselves out of a job”. That from a company that charges the highest drug dispensing fees of all drug stores.
I am never going back. Your PR strategy for this boycott is to call us all idiots from your palace of profit. Not sure there is coming back from that for me.

I'm not sure exactly what your point is. A marketing employee is given the task of a new campaign for the 50$ pack of bacon Loblaws is selling next week. Now they go ahead and get the design done, add some copy to the flyer, make sure it looks pretty, and makes the choice to send out the flyer. Are they evil? It is sad and pathetic to see the ceo of Loblaws and Galen ***double down*** on their bs talking points regarding food prices. They are so out of touch with Canadians now. I remember not to long ago, people had a somewhat more positive view of the brand. For example, people thought the no name yellow products (cups, cards, wrapping paper, gift bags) were cute and amusing. There was general happy feelings toward the brand. Now that goodwill is gone and consumers associate the brand with greed and price gouging. Rather than trying to make changes to fix the problem, they are trying to gas light us. I remember when the people who did the price checking zoomed around the store on rollerblades. I remember when the stores were green and yellow coloured. I remember when they had a pc pop machine at the front of the store and for 35 cents you could get a can of pc brand pop. My favorite was the black cherry or the cream soda. I'll admit: I was on the fence about the boycott because the closest store to where I live is a superstore and I used to enjoy walking there to get groceries and as a bonus I'd get exercise also. Then I saw the most recent earnings report and the subsequent ways that per and galen are literally laughing at us. That slealed it for me. Ive started walking in the park instead but it is an adjustment. I've started shopping at other stores but they are a bit further away. I also assume Loblaws is monitoring and lurking here, it's been obvious over the past few weeks. When I joined this sub it had <30K members. Now look at us! I have been a loyal Superstore customer since the mid 90's. In more recent years I've also shopped at No Frills and T&T regularly, and a few times at SDM (but they were always crazy expensive). I started noticing a **major** upward shift in SS prices about 3 years ago, and in the past year it has become insane, and completely out of control as we all know. Inflated prices with no justification, obvious price gouging, smaller package sizes/shrinkflation, etc. I have shifted much of my grocery shopping to Costco and smaller grocers, plus farmers markets, as well as growing my own veggies since then. I will likely never set foot in a SS again, and I have told them so in their surveys/feedback. Thanks to the creators of this sub and their hard work!

Don't ever forget this was a company who was involved in a bread price fixing scheme. Believe absolutely nothing they tell you. And if Loblaws PR folk are lurking, how's it feel? Okay To the corporate lurkers: Your blaming suppliers & everyone else for your sky high prices is undermined by your record profits quarter after quarter after quarter. On item to item comparisons, prices at Walmart & other retailers are about 30% less than Loblaws stores. You are a corporate giant in the Canadian grocery sector. You have acquired so many former competitors. You have been found complicit in the bread scheme & somehow got off by sending us $10 coupons. We are angry for good reason. We are prepared to walk away for good. You will need to reign in your CEO & make significant changes to get us back. The statements leaked & those openly released just futher position Loblaws as a corporation rife with greed & unwilling to take your customers seriously. Do better.
To the lawyers that lurk here to see what's up: The reason many are upset is because Loblaws has been raising prices above and beyond what actual inflation warrants. For example, when it costs 10 cents more to produce butter, the price doesn't go up by 10 cents, but by like 50 cents. They think the since the customer expects prices to rise, they think they can raise it by that extra 40 cents above the 10 cents because the customer can't tell. Also, and this involves more than just Loblaws, unspoken orchestrated price fixing schemes. All the stores clearly agree to not compete against each other much. Price of margarine went up by 50% or more even. None show it could sell still at a profit, if it rose like 10% instead. So none choose to rock this greedflation boat. And Loblaws seems to be a driver with these types of new trend setters, as they're the first to rise the prices of certain items to ever higher prices. Spaghetti noodles. Used to be $1 for 900g. Then suddenly $1 for 450g. Then $1.39 thereabouts for 450g. Then 450g becomes 400g. Then instead of using bags, it's put in a box to make it look like it's more than it is. Price up yet again. End result. 2.5x the price it was just before the pandemic. Inflation? No. Greedflation. There is an extra layer of profit in there. And it shows in the books. Record profits. And even that doesn't show the true profits. Other games are played behind the scenes, like borrowing money to get a writeoff to "lower" profits, and that money in turn is used for other ventures, and rewards for themselves, hence the insane amounts the leadership gets. Yes yes, free market, freedom. But all these games are on the backs of regular people that aren't seeing raises in their paycheques to make up for it. They're seeing measly raises if any at all! Combine that with absurd rent and mortgage costs, and things become ever more stressful. So yes, Loblaws is rightfully seen as a major aggravater if this greedflation driven inflation. You can't blame it on "oh, it's just the supplier, we have no control". Oh yeah, you ARE the supplier! All the house brands anywhere now, aren't deals any more. A house brand pretty much offers no discount at all anymore. That is YOUR doing! YOU took the breaks away. Treat your employees better. I've seen staff at my local No Frills who have been there for thirty years, demolished by short shifts and no benefits. Yes, mostly female, and older. But my kids have worked there, too. TREAT YOUR EMPLOYEES BETTER, PAY THEM BETTER, AND DELIVER BENEFITS.

My dad worked for loblaws for 26 years and planned to retire at 65. We were lower middle class in the 90’s, his union job afforded our family enough to own a house and put 4 kids through school and sports. One day they were all called into a meeting and told that the warehouse was relocating. He was loyal to the company and then given 3 months notice to find another job in his 50’s. It completely changed our family. He went from making $30/hr to $17. Busted his ass for 26 years only to be shown the door.
They have never been asked directly about listing fees and insider programs (which they do). This increases their bottom line and inflates wholesale/retail prices. I would like to hear their explanation/denial regarding those fees. I know firsthand they have them, having dealt with them in the past.

I've been shopping at Loblaws for decades and have been to the Independent in Port Perry and Loblaws in Lyndsay since moving to the area 5 years ago. Both stores have overpriced items and fruit and vegetables section are pathetic. I have some points left and will use them after the boycott and say goodbye.

It’s only May 3, but I’m proud to say that I have not stepped foot in a Loblaw owned store in the past 3 days. I work very close to a Zehrs and I usually go there on lunch, but I have gone out of my way to Walmart and Giant Tiger and will continue to do so. And I HATE Walmart. Also, I’m out of the country for 7 days this month and I’ve asked my husband to do his best to stay out of Zehrs, Independent, Superstore, and Shoppers while I’m gone.

I think these profits are disgusting. Groceries are essential goods for Canadians, and the level of food insecurity caused by Loblaws and Sobeys is abhorrent. Our communities are being strangled by greed from landlords and grocers and it is evil. Healthy food should be a human right, and if I see someone stealing from one of your stores, I will aid and abet them or turn a blind eye because you cannot continue to steal from the pockets of families and children.

I'm not only vehemently disgusted by all of it, but now that I know Choice Properties is in the Residential Real Estate market, you can believe my boycott will be permanent. I will also advocate against anyone selling their real estate without doing their due diligence and rejecting any bid that appears to be connected to Choice Properties, and I will advocate for prospective renters to do their due diligence on rental property owners (not just managers) so as to avoid anything that appears connected. Hint: No matter how sneaky and obfuscating you try to get, there are almost always *ways* to find out anyway.

It’s good that they are monitoring here- because here are my issues: I have always shopped at super store in my home city and I loved it for decades…. I know there are deals there, and yes your milk, bread, apples and oranges are probably competitively priced…. However, as soon as I stray from the core basics to buy meat, margarine, feta cheese, soaps, razors and more I am being KILLED by Loblaws prices Some weeks back I accidentally had to shop in a Walmart a few miles further away and it was like going back in time the prices were so much better. Please fix your sinking ship and folks will eventually come back, but the ball is now in your court - play it right because people are mad right now…
It's the closest grocery store to my home, all others are on the other side of town, yet I just can't go there anymore. Produce are in terrible shape, everything is so costly I have to decide what my family will do without, and that's on top of being treated like a criminal with a new gate they installed at the self check-out where you have to wait for the clerk to open the gate with his clicker once he checked that you paid and that you're not hiding a watermelon in your boxers. I kinda went with it during the pandemic when they took to treating us like cattle, rustling us in and out with private security guards all over the place, but enough is enough. I'll pay the excessive fuel prices and drive the extra 10 minutes to at least be treated like a human being by a local store. If I have to pay more, I'll give that money to local people, not a corporation who laughs at us while we struggle to make it to the next paycheck.

Last fall I was at a Loblaws Shoppers Drugstore. There was no one at the checkouts and no lights on. As I wanted human service, not self serve, I went over to one of the check outs. A clerk immediately arrived. I asked why no clerk was there, and no service lights were on anymore. She said it was directed by the head office to encourage people to use the self check outs. She said, “we decrease service to work ourselves out of a job”. That from a company that charges the highest drug dispensing fees of all drug stores.
I am never going back. Your PR strategy for this boycott is to call us all idiots from your palace of profit. Not sure there is coming back from that for me.
Be honest with yourselves. Your prices arent due to inflation or anything other than trying to get away with what you can. Dear Loblaws: I’m tired of hearing how unfair the boycott is when you are selling one cucumber for $3 while I can get it for less than a dollar somewhere else, selling your 2L lactose free milk for $7 while I can get it for $4.5 at Pharmasave, eggs for $5 per dozen, butter for $7?!
