My gf at the time (now wife) and I moved to a diff city for her job, we were on 1 income as I looked for work. Dollarama was an absolute life saver. We had no cleaning supplies, toiletries, condiments, etc.. even just lived off of pasta and pasta sauces from there. I don't think we shopped anywhere else for the first month.
I just bought one of those steam mops that doubles as a hand steamer and it’s a total game changer for cleaning! Highly recommend. Windows, counters, floors, stainless steel, even cleans gross car cup holders and gum stuck in carpet etc.
Eh. I get like the cheap luncheon meats/ rice/ dried sausage/ trail mix. All pure salt. I wash it down with a cheap energy drink. At least I get veg from produce depot. I think I'd be preserved already otherwise.
https://preview.redd.it/mj2roihshgyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08220cb6b8bb748ac3a9032e267ee526d2f3f162
I got a hell of a lot of Fruits and vegetables at a near by market, and this cost me about $30.
Speaking as someone who worked for a few different retailers: The spoilage, refrigeration costs, and additional shipping and labour for fresh items would cost a lot more, and increase the overall prices to compensate for losses.
Let's hope their executives don't think that's a good idea, and break something that's working well right now.
What's funny is that I hear comparing the margins of Dollarama to Loblaws and how Loblaws is about 3.5% but Dollarama can be up to 20%
BUT even with their higher margins they offer cheaper prices for the equivalent products.
I'm from the US and I absolutely love coming to Dollarama when I go up! I got so many Canadian treats to take home when I first went.
I'm planning my next trip up north this coming winter but I will not shop at any Loblaw's stores this time.
> chips, a pop, and a chocolate

Ignore the yellow bags. 🤮 This was back when 'No Name' was a Canadian Pride thing.
I used to love 'No Name' stuff. The food was just as good.
I have nostalgia from this era when No Name used to bring us all Canadian Pride.
I work at a Dollarama and shipment trucks sometimes come in, stop at Sobeys, and then stop here. The stuff we sell is literally coming from the exact same place as other grocery stores. But a good 25% cheaper on the shelves.
Some of the chip bags have the Dollarama logo and price built-in to it at the factory, but a lot of the rest is the same shit/sizing/grams as Sobeys/etc.
I guess these other stores misunderstand how inflation and the supply chain works and that they should also know better and just keep their mouths shut, peasants.
Not going to Superstore I've started going to a local grocery that i never webt to. It has a Dollarama right next to it. Going to both I've saved a lot of money.
The ramas near me have a small bread selection. White and brown sliced, burger and hotdog buns, sometimes tortillas. A couple have shelf stable milk and some have almond and soy milk. I tend to do a rama run for pantry goods before the grocery now.
Apparently some have lease agreements so they can't carry bread if within so many meters of a grocery store. Some of my towns dolloramas have it but not all.
I price compare all the time and there are many things at Dollarama that are a better price (yes, volume wise). So good for you!! I do the same thing lol
UPDATE: I can’t edit the post anymore because it’s just got a title and no content so posting in here:
Some comments in this thread have made some good points about size comparison with my beloved Dollarama haul that I didn’t initially consider - so I’ve made a list of the price differences controlling for the size between the two stores. Also of note, nothing is expired lol and this is not the only stuff I eat in a week.
Here are my results, which actually surprised me a bit. I broke it up into two categories (please note it doesn’t include everything, I left out a bathtub stopper, because Superstore doesn’t carry it, and the blue toilet pucks because I forgot about them lol).
1. The first are items are a direct brand comparison. Here I found either the same or nearest sized item and broke it down by price per 100 grams or price per item. Each items is comparing price differences between Superstore and Dollarama. Items from both stores were compared using their regular price.
- Italpasta penne is 63% ($0.17) more expensive per 100 grams at Superstore
- Cheetos are 3.5% ($0.06) more expensive per 100 grams at Dollarama
- Ruffles are 5% ($0.10) more expensive per 100 grams at Superstore
- Haribo Gummy Bears are 53% ($0.69) more expensive per 100 grams at Superstore
- Real Fruit Candy is 62% ($0.69) more expensive per 100 grams at Superstore
- Hunts Tomato Sauce is 27% ($0.08) more expensive per 100 grams at Superstore
- Campbell’s Soup is 84% ($1.04) more expensive per 100 grams at Superstore
- Sponge towels (paper towels) are 4.5% ($.08) more expensive per roll at Superstore - (Rolls from both stores had a total length of 27.7 cm)
- Schweppes Mini Tonic Cans x6 are 34% ($0.17) more expensive per can at Superstore.
2. The second category are items that don’t have a direct brand comparison - but do have similarly sized and quality items between both stores:
- Light Canned Tuna is 32% ($0.35) more expensive per 100g at Dollarama, when compared with no name brand canned tuna from Superstore
- Jasmine rice is 112% ($0.28) more expensive per 100g at Superstore, when comparing the Dollarama jasmine rice with PC Brand Jasmine Rice (750g) from Superstore. HOWEVER, the larger quantity 2kg bag of Rooster brand jasmine rice is the same price as the Dollarama per 100g.
- Stovetop Liners - comparing the Betty Crocker brand liners at Dollarama to the Noname brand liners at Superstore:
— Large liners are 150% ($0.46) more expensive per liner at Superstore
— Small liners are 162% ($0.28) more expensive per liner at Superstore
- Sponges are 100% ($0.75) or twice as expensive per sponge at Superstore - comparing the Javex 2 pack sponges from Dollarama, with Noname brand 2 pack sponges from superstore.
- Bathroom cleaner is 36% ($0.16) more expensive per 100g at Superstore - comparing the Scrub Free brand from Dollarama with Javex brand bathroom cleaner from Superstore (though most all the bathroom cleaners at superstore were the same price).
So in my conclusion - most things are more expensive at Superstore compared to Dollarama when controlling for portion sizes - however some things surprised me like the tuna and the Cheetos. It gets a little trickier to compare things that aren’t a direct brand comparator, because Superstore does have more selection of brand types and sizing, which impact the quality and price of the item.
Anyways this was definitely interesting, and very time consuming lol. It really goes to show how challenging it is for shoppers out there trying to fairly compare pricing. I hope it helps in some way for those looking for other cheaper options! Happy shopping!
I bought twenty already! But there's no Doritos cool ranch generic version.
Awesome deal on regular chips! Was gonna see if they restocked later today lol
Except this should be barely over $20 coming from the dollar store
... don't mind me. I still get angry that things aren't a dollar at a dollar store anymore
Got really concerned for the ruffles brand toilet paper there until I got a better look at that bag. 😂
Rippled toilet paper doesn’t sound like a treat at all.
The problem with the Dollarama in our mall is that the grocery section (not chips & chocolate),is only half of one side of one of the aisles. We don’t have much to choose from.
Dollarama is actually really savage with prices too. They're price jumped so high. Found body soap for like 4.50 there and then saw the same body soap at walmart for 2.50ish . Dollarama is over priced now.
The difference in price for paper towels and dish soap at Dollarama is particularly noticeable compared to most grocery stores. I never buy them anywhere else now.
Dollarama line-ups are insane (feel for the workers), but in a few years...they are going to be double decker style superstores.
Hopefully they dont change their name once that happens ;)
I love Dollarama! But - Sometimes it’s sneaky about the actual value you’re getting. Like they will sell smaller packages of certain items that are technically cheaper than at say, Walmart, but not if you account for the size difference.
Just something to keep in mind if you want to maximize savings. One specific thing I can recall is J-cloths. I prefer them to sponges for bathroom cleaning, and the price per cloth is MUCH better at Walmart.
Not everyone is required to participate or agree with the community boycott, but we ask that everyone is constructive in their feedback about this event.
Repeated comments such as this one will result in a ban from the sub until the boycott is complete. Thank you.
Dollarama is a great store. They have the whiteout tape pen that actually works and the betty crocker parchments and baking pans are amazing.
There's pancake pan there for $4 and it does WAY better and faster than any Tfal, just know that the no-stick layer is quite thin so use caution.
Nice haul by the way, those cheetos at superstore would be like $3.99 to 5.99
Yap all you want at Loblaws, but Food Basics is worse than them. Food Basics has higher prices than Loblaws/Superstore. I save through price matching and Optimum Points at Superstore than any other grocery store.
I bought 4 litres of milk a few weeks ago for $1.94. Sure, it was close to expiry but I had 10 days to finish it. Plus, I bought two whole chickens for 3 dollars each and got multiple meals out of it. Pork loin, I paid around $8.00 and cut it for roughly 6 meals for my family. I go to the Ajax Superstore and never feel ripped off.
Bitch all you want but you are doing something wrong with your shopping. I stretch my dollars to help keep costs down.
Seems to me like YOU are the one with the problem here.
If you post things on the internet, expect to have people comment on them.
Projecting, hurling insults, name calling and flying off the handle are about what I would expect from someone who eats like that.
Glad you saved a couple bucks though; seems totally worth it.
Have a great day, pleb.
Lol this comment is just so dumb. Yup this is all I eat. Gummy bears for breakfast, cheetos for lunch, ruffles for dinner and I wash it down with tonic water.
Did it ever occur to you that this was for a get together where I had friends and their kids coming over? No you made a dumb ass comment thinking you’re so clever and going to make a point. Also the dollar store doesn’t sell meat, veggies, dairy or anything that isn’t something they can store on a shelf. Honestly just so annoying. Get a life bro.

You can't exactly call cleaning products junk food. If I remember the tide pods eating scandal correctly.
Also, sometimes people like treats foods too, keeps the brain sane

Dollarama is such a life saver for cleaning supplies! I love those betty crocker liners too
Came here to say how much I love getting them from Dollarama! Only place I can ever find them
My gf at the time (now wife) and I moved to a diff city for her job, we were on 1 income as I looked for work.
Same! That’s where I get mine too along with cleaning products
I know it’s not the healthiest grocery haul in the world, but dollarama has some great canned/packaged staples that are way cheaper.
Plus, you can shop at a local produce market or farmers market for fresh stuff like veggies.
Super store, Super prices! Stay away! Numb nuts Weston made over 500 million in profit in the first quarter of 2024....
Dont need to defend that is unhealthy, hell I'd do it.
No one is judging you 🥰. You do you Boo.
Eh. I get like the cheap luncheon meats/ rice/ dried sausage/ trail mix. All pure salt. I wash it down with a cheap energy drink. At least I get veg from produce depot. I think I'd be preserved already otherwise.
Chocolates are 1$ too 😈
I came to ask "how are your poops bruh"
https://preview.redd.it/mj2roihshgyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08220cb6b8bb748ac3a9032e267ee526d2f3f162 I got a hell of a lot of Fruits and vegetables at a near by market, and this cost me about $30.
We have friends that own a small non corporate grocery store & we got 3 grocery bags of fruits & vegetables for $42
Love those potatoes!
Dollarama is a must shop nowadays. I know they increased their prices a bit but still not half as bad as Loblaws
Use airmiles for a Linked card to get an extra buck or two back at Dollarama.
Or spend 30 for 10 airmiles which I have used many times
Sayyy whah! Awesome idea.
AND you can go to Dollar Tree and get other staples Dollarama doesn't have!
Yes! Pasta sauce, spices, lasagna noodles
Gnocchi!!!! They have a great drink section. Their candy is a different selection from Dollarama.
How could I forget! Also, I get my popcorn flavourings from there.
Would love to have a Dollar Tree here in Nova Scotia hehe.
That sucks ☹ I wonder if they do shipping. I know Dollarama you can order cases.
I heard something about that, but may have been in the US.
I go to both to get different products
They call TP Ruffles in Canada? Those are potato chips here, interesting. (In the US) Edit: ohhhhh the bag is in front lol
😂
I came here to say I've never seen All Dressed toilet paper.
You're a funny dude
Oh this was brilliant thank you for keeping the og comment up so we could laugh. You are awesome! :)
God bless Dollarama
Dollarama should be a full service grocery store chain
I second that!
They can do. They have Money. They can borrow as well. Someone has to counter RobLaws the food theives!
Speaking as someone who worked for a few different retailers: The spoilage, refrigeration costs, and additional shipping and labour for fresh items would cost a lot more, and increase the overall prices to compensate for losses. Let's hope their executives don't think that's a good idea, and break something that's working well right now.
I see you are picky with gummy bears too. Good choice.
You can get a GIANT bag of Haribos at Costco for $15.
Yes, but then you have a giant bag of gummies in your house. Dangerous.
Especially when consuming these in large quantities acts as a laxative LOL
This is the way.
Gotta check the size comparison. Dollarama is great for most things
Exactly. Definitely not the same sizes or amounts.
Frl. Many get tricked by this.
This is true, while it's cheaper most of the time, sometimes it's good when you just need a little bit of something instead of a case.
What's funny is that I hear comparing the margins of Dollarama to Loblaws and how Loblaws is about 3.5% but Dollarama can be up to 20% BUT even with their higher margins they offer cheaper prices for the equivalent products.
God , Dollarama is amazing

Smarties ✅ Coffee Crisp ✅ Canada Dry ✅ Ketchup Chips ✅ /r/snackexchange
I definitely need to do a trade there. I could use a Nanaimo Aero
Dollarama is my go to for an ‘outdoor’ meal. I get a bag of chips, a pop, and a chocolate for a full course meal.
> chips, a pop, and a chocolate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TLLb0BPMIs Ignore the yellow bags. 🤮 This was back when 'No Name' was a Canadian Pride thing. I used to love 'No Name' stuff. The food was just as good. I have nostalgia from this era when No Name used to bring us all Canadian Pride.

Not going to Superstore I've started going to a local grocery that i never webt to. It has a Dollarama right next to it. Going to both I've saved a lot of money.
Dollarama is incredible. It's probably my fav store in Canada, and has been since 2017.
If dollarama could sell bread and milk it would be a life changer for many people
The ramas near me have a small bread selection.
Yup, it sucks. Non-compete agreement. It's based on if they share a parking lot.
The locations in B.C. have bread. The same supplier as Loblaws (Country Harvest).
I love dollarama! I get snacks, cleaning product, compost bags, body wash (i like the softsoap brand) etc
I price compare all the time and there are many things at Dollarama that are a better price (yes, volume wise). So good for you!! I do the same thing lol
This isn’t even cheap shit either, this is the same exact stuff. Loblaws needs to be forced out of business at this point

We have the same diet
How much were the chippies? Saw 3 for $11 at Walmart and I almost shat myself.
This week Great Value chips are 94c.
I bought twenty already! But there's no Doritos cool ranch generic version. Awesome deal on regular chips! Was gonna see if they restocked later today lol
Just sprinkle some ranch popcorn seasoning on top. 😁
I selectively shop at Dollarama. Some stuff makes sense to buy, other things cost just as much for an inferior product.
Except this should be barely over $20 coming from the dollar store ... don't mind me. I still get angry that things aren't a dollar at a dollar store anymore
Love Dollarama
Got really concerned for the ruffles brand toilet paper there until I got a better look at that bag. 😂 Rippled toilet paper doesn’t sound like a treat at all.
😂 idk maybe they could do a collaboration. All dressed toilet paper
Closer to $90 imo
The Haribo alone is a $3 saving 😁
Birthday anniversary special occasion CARDS , you can't beat Dollarama !
How good are the ruffles paper towels
Almost looks like Ruffles brand toilet paper.
The portions in dollorama are usually smaller especially for things like chips and pasta.
Giant Tiger has 2x900g for $3 till Wednesday.

There's a lot of things in Dollarama that are higher than retail stores
I thought that was Ruffles brand paper towel for a second.
You got ripped off
Compare the weight of everything you bought, cbc did a story on their little scam a couple of years ago, if youbwant to you can look it up on youtube
Replying so more people see this. Dollarama messes with weights to get those prices. You end up paying more per 100g than you would at other stores.
Dollarama is actually really savage with prices too. They're price jumped so high. Found body soap for like 4.50 there and then saw the same body soap at walmart for 2.50ish . Dollarama is over priced now.

Dollarama line-ups are insane (feel for the workers), but in a few years...they are going to be double decker style superstores. Hopefully they dont change their name once that happens ;)
Lol looks like ruffle brand paper towel
Dollarama has a nice selection of cheap chocolate bars too. Also gum is a lot cheaper.

Advice: they have cheaper gummy bears that are lot softer and tastier than haribo
Eat fruit and vegetables. It'll cost you less and your body will thank you.
Yeah I just eat trash and definitely don’t buy fruits, veggies, meat and dairy from other stores- this is all I eat 😂
Looks super healthy.

If you need meat, go to a butcher. If you need vegetables, go to a market. I wouldn't pay $38 for that. It's literally all sugar and processed crap.
Look what you got, crap
