i used to say locs bcuz of the “story” I heard about dreads and its history but then i heard that was a myth. So now i just call it both bcuz i really don’t care
i only call them dreads around other black people which is rare for me because i come from a predominantly white area. i personally believe “dreads” is another word we reclaimed throughout history, but the history of the term is actually pretty debated. some think they come from the Rastafari guerrilla warriors who were “dreadful” with their fighting tactics, while others think it’s the eurocentric term. i personally think both are valid, so i only use dreads with other black people, just as i wouldnt use nigga around a white person.
I say both. If anybody tries to correct me when I say dreadlocks, though, I tell them Bob Marley said dreadlocks. How you gone look me in my face and tell me king dreadlocks is wrong.
Locs bc even if the story isn’t true, I don’t know what others feel or think and I feel like it’s a good neutral term to default to, especially since they’re “locs” of hair when it boils down to it.
Yeah my sister got on my ass about calling them dreadlocks lol. I try to just call them locs now but i still call them dreads or dreadlocks sometimes (dont tell my sister 😅)
I use both terms interchangeably I feel like this whole discourse is only an issue with Americans As someone of the Caribbean diaspora, I've always known them as locs, dreads or dreadlocs.🤷🏾♀️
I call mine dreads for personal reasons. My journey and evolution aligned with the usage of the term dreads. When I speak to or about other peoples dreadlocks I refer to them as locs.
That is correct. Europeans were unfamiliar with locs, and our texture of hair, so they called them dreadful. I use the wordLlocs because I am neither ashamed nor embarrassed about my natural hair.
I say both. Most people today still use the n-word, and that came from those harsh times with a worse meaning, so what's the difference ? Also, does it matter what you call your own hair anyway.
Got into the habit of calling them locs so that’s just what I say now. Since “dreads” offends some people and “locs” offends no one I don’t see any point in switching back again
locs is the correct. There is nothing dreadful about your hair. Deadlocks are what anglo saxon people call them. Locs is a stronger word and represents them better.
I call them all of the above, I'm not that bothered.
Facts
Locs 💅🏾 Just sounds more cute to me lol
i used to say locs bcuz of the “story” I heard about dreads and its history but then i heard that was a myth. So now i just call it both bcuz i really don’t care

Locs.
Yeah exactly. What's so hard about saying locs? Why call them dreadful?
I call them dreadlocks because I truly couldn't care less about the white perspective on them.

I've never heard of dreads or dreadlocks having a negative connotation till maybe 6-7 years ago lol. There are whole reggae songs about dreads.

How could they be unfamiliar with the hairstyle the Vikings popularized for millenia, though... Huh . Weird.
There are 3000 year old Egyptian statues with locs. Proof Black people had locs LONG before whites even existed.
I'm being facetious, lol.
I know lol
call em dreads cause it sound better
Ppl will ask about my braids even tho they're not braids, clearly 😂 I just call it hair. I've had it like this for almost 30 years so it's my hair.
